The Other Wrap Top // Just Add A Peplum

  • It seemed there was quite a bit of interest in the minty green iridescent top I was wearing recently in the stretch skirts video (paired with the black faux leather skirt), so I wanted to show how it was made. This is a simple modification, an add-on to my regular wrap back top, you simply add a peplum! Of any shape and design you like, it's easy to draft them from the A-line skirt pattern!
The silver holo fabric (of doom, yes) I used: www.moodfabrics.com/metallic-...
The metallic linen I mention: www.robertkaufman.com/fabrics...
Music and Sound Effects from Epidemic Sound.

I feel like this kind of manual activity, traditionally assigned to women, allowed us to gather together around something (sewing, embroidering, even cooking) and share our confidences. Bianca's sewing room is our sewing room and it feels safe enough to share our sadness, our happiness, our problems, and our secrets. Is kind of an intimate connection that I have seen in IRL sewing rooms and courses. I'm very glad you feel the same ♥♥♥♥

For sewing on metallic fabrics I highly recommend using a Schmetz microtex needle. They are super sharp and pierce the metallic filaments without causing the filament to shift. I always use a new microtex needle for a project and then reuse the used needle for just regular sewing on the assumption that the needle tip could be dull, but it's still sharp enough for regular sewing.

Deepest Condolences, Bianca. Yes, we do wish to know of these sad events, because you are our friend. After all, I am sure we all have "patterning tables of doom", simply due to the mistakes and fue-pa's which haunt us, from time to time. ;) I love love, love those wrap blouses in all fabrics, however, the blouses you made are Outstanding. Eye poppers for sure. :) I once made a door curtain (yes, it was strips of fabric all the way across and down to the floor) and matching window curtains for my granddaughters' room. Never again. I don't know what fabric it was, all that mattered was the glitters, sheerness, and colors. My machine needle gummed up. The fraying was driving me insane. So I researched and discovered to keep a small bottle of oil by the sewing machine to stop the gumming. (Maybe, that sewing event, was what caused my hair to gain more whiteness.) Lol. Keep doing YOU.
Has anyone ever used Fray Stop? It reminds me of super glue.

  • @Hiker_who_Sews

The tops are beautiful! The honesty about the fabric's difficult nature is appreciated.
We always had tinsel on our trees in the 50s and 60s. By the 70s Christmas trees were so thick from how they were cropped/pruned, that there wasn't enough room between the layers of branches to allow tinsel to hang. Now days, I legally harvest a natural tree that would look great with tinsel, but in order for our tree to be chipped and turned into compost, every bit of tinsel must first be removed. Headache!

Sympathy for the tricky fabric. My last sewing project was the most obnoxious brocade from Joann. It frayed horribly, slipped around so much that straight cut lines were nearly impossible, pulled out at all stitch lines, and was generally miserable to sew with. I left a one star review online with a lot of technical details of what was awful and how I made it work anyway. I even got apology coupons from Joann after my review was approved. The only upside is that the fabric is utterly gorgeous, and it does have beautiful drape and movement when made up into a regency open robe with a short train.

  • @sandiemable
    @sandiemable 2 года назад +2

Gorgeous...the fabric would have me tearing my hair out. LOL! When I was a kid, tinsel was the metallic garland hung around the tree. Ice cycles were made from real aluminum foil that we would drape on the branches one at a time, and it was beautiful. These days they are made from some sort of plastic and do not, in my opinion, hang the same.
    Enjoy the Memorial Day weekend,
    xoxo's Sandie

    • @elisabethmontegna5412
      @elisabethmontegna5412 2 года назад

I agree that a thicker foil tinsel is much nicer to use on a tree than the plastic icicles you usually see in the US. I bought tinsel/icicles at a German Christmas market and it’s definitely some type of heavier metallic foil that hangs in a really lovely way and stays put in the branches. The plastic staticky kind really can’t compare.

And… I got two new machines! So cheap I couldn’t pass the, up. One a singer 99 and the other an in table kenmore 1937. Omg I l❤ them so much. Can you maybe do a video at some point on sewing machine maintenance of your 99k?

Hi, I seem to remember that you had a linen blend fabric in this metallic finish. It's a bit of a game for me to play spot the fabric from Mood. I haven't shopped around there for a while now so I guess there will be fabrics I haven't seen coming up. I don't buy the fabric btw, I just look at them. I did recognize the very textured shiny fabric of the tops you have been wearing the last couple of weeks. I've enjoyed seeing how they came out as they just showed them some time back in history. I know it wasn't yesterday that I saw them at Mood so that is back in history for me. Yours, Ann

The sparkle ✨! I love how it came out in the end!
I've considered working with tencel...but if it's like this rayon chirimen that I'm using to make a 1920s dress I'm gonna have a hard time. I think the wrap top w/peplum is really cute. I might have to try my hand at sewing this too ✨

Thank you Michelle! Alas Tencel rayon is fine, tinsel (like the kind thrown on christmas trees for sparkle) in a fabric is annoying www.google.com/search?q=christmas+tinsel Same word different stuff luckily!

Oh my gosh 😮! I didn’t even realise haha. Like the Christmas tree tinsel?? That sounds horrendous to work with-It’s super sparkly though…(I do like sparkle ) and I think it came out beautifully 💕

I wonder if you used strips of a light weight fusible interfacing on the tinsel fabric to stabilise the seams you could get away with clipping your curves and not topstitching?

Sorry to hear about your kitty, it's okay to be sad , no judgment here.
Yes you can still get tinsle but it is much harder to find.

This is one of your most extraordinary patterns! I truly adore this piece. Have you ever seen Agnes Moorhead’s classic film, The Bat? I think you would adore her costumes and the esthetic of the film a great deal.

When I was child in the 70's we did have tinsel on our Christmas tree. Yes, it's very fun to just kind of toss it onto the tree branches, but it is a horrible mess to try to clean up. And yes, very bad for cats. Let me tell you, hairballs with tinsel are not nearly as pretty as one would think.
My heart does go out to you that your other family cat crossed the rainbow bridge to join her littermate. Hopefully your parents will find a deserving and wonderful new furbaby to not replace the others, but to save more furry lives. 💜❤

As always a treat to watch. Your videos are how I steel myself for work. Do you have a link for the skirt you wore at the end? I’m fascinated by that flounced hem.

Thank you! It is this skirt here www.mytheresa.com/en-us/norma-kamali-holographic-jersey-midi-skirt-1815426.html created from flared gores ✨

@@TheClosetHistorian yes that is the one. It looks like the gores fall in on them selves. On the video it looked like it was pleated and I could not figure it out. Thanks so much 💜

Hmmm.... I'm thinking about this with the peplum on that orange 1890s bodice I think you drew from for the mandrogora gown

Just my own preferred method,( because I am lucky enough to have a new serger,) I would have gone around the seams when bag lining and serged them all together. I have had some disasters with beautiful but ravel prone fabrics in my past.

I’m in love it’s y,our channel, I find myself ardently watching every thing you make and learning so much. I must admit, I’m an Edwardian gal but I do also love the 30s to the 50s. How eclectic. I can’t help but be fascinated by your shears, can you tell me what brand they are and I can maybe track them down in the UK.
    thanks for being you!

Thank you Bobbi! If you mean my giant pattern scissors, Macculloch and Wallis have similar-ish ones www.macculloch-wallis.co.uk/p/82634/hobby-craft/mw/wilkinson-pattern-cutting-shears-20cm but try searching "pattern cutting shears" and Amazon UK may have some too!

Can confirm, tinsel gets everywhere and is a bad idea with cats.

No tinsel on our trees either, though I have almost always had a cat. I didn’t have a cat for one year due to being freshly married and living in a no pet apartment, we got a cat as soon as we moved and she’s moved with us for the last 14 years.
Lovely top and that fabric is beautiful but looks like an absolute nightmare.

I have seen a vintage pattern online Simplicity 8127, I love the design but not sure how to draft the skirt pockets, I can't seem to get the draft right, any chance you might do a video for this, no worries if not, I can just do a normal pocket ❤
