Secondly, and more importantly, I have also been told to avoid these, but I do think they have value in helping you understand what it feels like to be standing in the correct position. Instead of relying on them to keep you in place, just try and actively pull your shoulders back while wearing one so that it doesn't feel like it is doing anything. Also I never bought a commercial one, I used a judo belt. I guess you could probably use a regular belt as long as it doesn't have a big buckle.

A couple of quick tips from a professional leather worker.
Consider using an edge beveling knife to cut those 90 degree corners off the straps and burnish with some tokenole and a wood slicker. Corder Leather has a great video on edge finishing that I highly recommend. This is going to keep any sharp edges from dining into sensitive areas like the arm pit.
Using resoline is great, but consider using some more tokenole and a glass burnisher on the back. This will seal the suede side.
Tokenole is made from plant resin and wax. When you rub it briskly with a hardwood slicker or a glass burnisher, it generates heat, allowing the wax to melt into the leather and seal it. When done properly, you can actually get the suede side almost as smooth as the skin side.
This is also going to strengthen the leather as it compacts the fibers and keeps them flexable, without weighing them down with acrylic (which resoline is made from).
    Hope this helps. 💚

For the cheap folks out there, a wood dowel works fine to burnish the edge and the back. Water and wear will do the same job the legit products do, It just takes more time. I like beeswax and coconut oil with a bit of olive oil and a few drops of teatree oil mixed in to soften it and keep off mold. Hair conditioner works in a pinch.
As far as fit goes, I could be wrong, but it's screaming at me that the top piece needs to be a little longer, the bottom a little shorter, and then the joint could be angled and stitched instead of riveted for a much flatter passage under the arm. Personally, I would have chosen a thin vegetable tanned leather for some structure. After a bit of wear it will stretch to the perfect contour.

    • @Starvoice762
      @Starvoice762 26 дней назад +9

@questionmark576 I generally advise against coconut and olive oil in leatherwork.
Water works well as a burnishing agent because it basically just acts as lubrication in burnishing with a dowel, which draws the natural oils in the leather to the surface.
However, it doesn't work on Chrome Tanned (the more fabricy couch and bag leather), since the fibers don't compress in the same way that they do in Vegetable tan leather (The kind Bernadette was using.)
Plant based oils like olive and coconut go rancid after a while and can cause bacteria and mold to grow in your leather.
You'll most often see saddle makers use those because they're inexpensive (in comparison to other oils like Neatsfoot, made from the horns and hooves of the cow which doesnt spoil at the same rate), and the oils in saddlery get washed out and replaced with fresh oil frequently enough that it doesn't have time to go rancid.
When you burnish with toenole, that you are burnishing with is the wax, not the oils in the leather.
As it stands, adding different oils to leather is there to keep it pliable, not really to seal it. It's a complicated thing to explain. :)

    • @YaaLFH
      @YaaLFH Месяц назад +178

      @@vivienkoles1880 That's a very common misconception.
Bra straps are not meant to carry the weight of breasts. The main purpose of straps is to help shape and lift the breasts while holding them in one place. In a well designed and well fitted modern bra, most of the weight is supported by the bra band - that's why it should fit snugly and why "sports bras" that you can pull over your head are useless.
Unfortunately most women wear bras with much too wide band and much too small cups, which prevents the bra band from doing its job, digging grooves in arms, causing bad posture and damaging the bra.
FYI: I currently wear size 32J (yes, bra alphabet doesn't end at "DDD" and you shouldn't increase band size just because there are no larger cups) and have a strapless bra that supports, shapes and lifts my breasts just fine without the help of straps.

Your pecs get used to the hunched over posture, so they shorten, and if you try to just hulk out and overpower that, you end up with a sore back. They support your body in a way that gives you good posture, but by supporting you in this way they discourage the use of your muscles to achieve the same posture, and thus weakening your muscles, resulting in even worse posture once you take the thing off.
Basically, please only wear them if your specialist recommends them, because they will do more harm than good.

@@corruptedteka So, it does sort of depend on your individual body, but hypermobility apparently does result in some common posture misalignments. There's a great app called The Zebra Club that I'd highly recommend as a place to start. It's created by a physical therapist who specializes in hypermobility. It's a *little * pricey (I think like $100 for a year of membership?), but that's orders of magnitude cheaper than a year of physical therapy if it's not covered by your insurance.
I can come back in a bit and list out a few of the exercises I do for upper body posture. But depending on how hypermobile you are and how it affects you, it might be good to do exercises all over your body.

Please do keep in mind that it might cause some muscles to become weaker, causing more posture issues instead of less. If the harness supports the posture, your muscles don't have to so they don't do enough work for you to keep that posture without harness.

Yeah, I've also been told that "nudging" towards proper posture is fine, but that it shouldn't actually provide any real support since our bodies really hate wasting energy, so lesser-used muscles will degrade.
For me, doing exercise stuff like Pilates and Yoga, instead, has really helped pull my shoulders back, though it does require consistent daily effort to maintain, which isn't something for everybody.

Agreed. One thing that would help a lot is to do back exercises. A large majority people's entire back is woefully weak compared to what it should be for having healthy posture and preventing back and neck pain. Pull ups, bent over t-bar rows, Romanian deadlifts, weighted hip thrusts, and reverse flys are good places to start.

Flexibility and strength are the way to go and not just a passive structure to hold your shoulders back. And from experience I can tell you that I’ve had patients who bought that thing and still had a bad poster because the shoulders and upper back are not the only thing that are responsible for good posture. It’s the whole body. Starting from the feet and up to the head. So please consider what I’m saying and maybe see a specialist to talk about it 😊 greetings from Germany

A brace like this pulls your shoulder back and limits their movement, taking over the role of your back muscles. Disused muscles weaken over time, which means that after wearing it for a while you are less able to function without it because your muscles are in even worse condition than they were.

Focus on posture in garment making is wonderful and often gets overlooked, but a big part of modern posture issues is the setup of our spaces. Those who use laptops often have to hunch over to use them a lot. A stand to raise the laptop screen while using an external keyboard and mouse, or using the laptop as is with an external monitor will do a lot of the posture work for you. Simply having your eyes rest on your tasks at an appropriate level can relieve a lot of the tension. Pair that with good garment making and you're winning.

    Important information:
This only helps your posture while you are wearing it.
It can actually harm your posture in the long run, because your muscles no longer have to do the work and therefore may become weaker and can no longer keep your body straight without the support of the harness.
It can be useful in the moment, while you are sitting in front of your computer or sewing machine, but please make sure you don't wear it all day and remember to do exercises to strengthen those muscles.

The Problem with this is, that these harness or otherwise known as posture guides are actually bad for your posture. I'm pretty sure Dr Mike made a comment on this type of harness for your back. It actually does more harm than good, and degrades your back muscles, cuz the support is doing the work for them, they no longer need to be as strong, inadvertently making you incredibly reliant on the support. But then again it might be beneficial for you with your Scoliosis. Probs a good idea to talk to your doctor about it if they can provide some insight.

    SAFETY WARNING!!!
I’m sorry for the capital letters, but I really hope this reaction reaches Bernadette.
    Dear Bernadette,
I just watched your video about the shoulder harness to improve your posture, and I want to warn you about something. I’m absolutely not a troll, but a genuinely worried person who cares about you.
This harness is potentially damaging for your nerves, especially those in the armpit area but also those coming from the brachius plexus (at the front of the shoulder/chest).
First of all: nerves can get damaged by pressure applied over a longer amount of time. The higher the pressure, the quicker the damage usually is done. Since this model of a figure 8 harness is made to apply pressure to the shoulders to pull them back, and meant to be worn for a longer amount of time, those two factors are there.
Second, the pressure of the harness is applied to the armpit, where the axillary nerve surfaces, and on the front of the chest at the brachius plexus, which is a bundle of five nerves (radial, median, ulnar, axillary and musculocutaneous nerve). Especially the brachius plexus is the spot that is concerning to me, since the first three nerves mentioned are necessary for your hand movement and fine motor skills.
I’ve had an injury to both my radial nerve and my ulnar nerve, and that impacted my ability to hand sew for a long amount of time (in the worst case it took over 6 months to be able to sew on a button again).
So please please please, be very careful with this harness. If you start to feel tingling in a part of your hand, that’s a sign of a nerve being damaged (every nerve has it’s own area that’s being affected when compressed for an extended amount of time). Also sensations like a cold or hot feeling, “weird” pain, loss of strength or a “shooting” sensation can be indications that your nerve(s) are being compressed.
I’m really sorry if I sound condescending or like I want to talk you down, that’s absolutely not my intent. As I said, I care about you and your health, and having had a nerve injury myself, I know how devastating it can be.
Please take care of yourself, I sincerely hope nothing of the above will happen to you.
    Kind regards,
    Laura (NL)

I know you mean well, but Bernadette has scoliosis and spent much of her life wearing a massive medical spinal brace. One of the reasons that she enjoys corsets and stays so much, apart from the connection to the time period, is that they provided support for her spine with significantly less of the problems that such a stiff plastic brace caused. This “harness” is more a reminder to sit up straight than an actual support device.

@@theGhostWolfe Thanks for your reaction. I'm aware of Bernadettes scoliosis and her love for corsets, and that she has done a lot of research in this field.
However, a corset and/or scoliosis brace is sitting lower than the armpit and not putting any stress there, and it's also not going over the brachius plexus, and that is for very good reasons (not only nerve compression, but also blood circulation problems and muscles/bones that are close to the surface). The harness she has made now will probably put pressure in those spots, and that is what I'm worried about. As I said: compression + time can result in nerve damage. It may not be a problem when you keep on sitting up so straight that there is no pressure whatsoever, but this harness is meant to give you a reminder to sit up straight, which means that you will feel the pressure of the straps. That's the whole point of it. A pair of stays has a deeper armsceye and the position of the straps is different compared to this harness, that's why a pair of stays won't cause you the same problem if it's well made for your body.
I'm just worried about her safety where it comes to nerve compression. I've got my injuries in a similar situation and that's why I take the time to react to this. It's no fun to not be able to move your hand for weeks on end, being unable to do the simplest things like lifting your teacup or tying your own shoelaces, let alone handsewing.
I'm not saying she should go back to a rigid, stiff brace. I wouldn't really know a configuration for a harness like this that's both lightweight, safe and effective. I just know that what she has made now is probably risky for the reasons I mentioned above. I wish I could offer a different solution, but unfortunately, I can't.

@ working in a team: For 10 years I worked an employee representative. I can report that no matter for which job, and on which level, the ability to work in teams was always THE number one job requirement! Improving on that is always the best thing anybody can do! Incidentally, love the teapot mike!

In Japan they use an 8 shape piece of fabric to hold back the sleeves of kimono when doing work, like housework. I wonder if this way of holding the sleeves was chosen because it also gives support. It's called a "tasuki".
