This Man Built a WWII Fighter Plane by Hand

- It’s one thing to build a model airplane as a kid, but to recreate an entire World War II fighter plane (that flies!) piece by piece? That’s some real DIY magic. When Martin Phillips, an English tool shop owner, received a single rivet from a WWII Spitfire as a 40th birthday gift, it changed his life. His challenge: to rebuild the iconic aircraft from the one piece. Amazingly, he did it. It took him 14 years and a million pounds, but Phillips scoured the world for spare Spitfire parts, machined ones that no longer existed and even found an old wing rusting behind a pub. The Spitfire is the ultimate symbol of Britain’s war effort, and Martin has been keeping the legend alive since his plane’s maiden voyage in 2013.

Next: How one man recreate WWII
The north korea fat man is working on it.
charlie zanches The US fat man is working at it even harder, I think
And all it takes, is the will, of a single man.
Get me ferdinand's number.... i gotta talk to him... yeah....... talk...........
Trump, Putin, Xi, Erdogan and Mohammad Bin Salman all seem to be trying . .
He built is own plane and doesn't even fly it... i really hope this man gets a pilots licence, he spent 14 years building a plane he deserves to fly it
My guy
yes but i would want to be 100% qualified because i wouldn’t want to crash my life’s work
He may not be physically capable of doing it. Everything is mechanical, pulling on the yoke literally pulls the flaps, it isn’t wired, and the force you put in is equal to the force put out.
He really does
Yeah
Holy shit, I cry writing a paragraph for an essay, how do you build a damn plane for 14 years???
Meronia Jabou give a man time, will and resource and he will be able to do anything.
erald deadrix wise words my friend
Also doing something you like or think is cool or fun you can do it as long as you still have that feeling unlike essays
Essays are the worst
Older generation are tougher, and persistent. Qualities you and I could cultivate.
A generation brought up without video games, no continues no resets. Men and woman who got a knitted sweater for Christmas and a coloured eg for Easter. Who'd be building their own toys as children to later build their own homes as grown ups. Imagine a world where you cant buy stuff off the rack and need to learn to take care of yourself...
He should have nicknamed it the phoenix since all those destroyed spitfires were brought into one and reborn again into the RR232
Beautiful words of choice
Well RR232 was an original fuselage Martin managed to buy, but the other parts were just parts leftover from other Spits (kind of like donor surgery) and were used to rebuild RR232.
More fitting than you realise because the Phoenix was adopted by the City of Exeter (whose name and crest are on the plane) after the Blitz as a symbol of the cities reconstruction.
I approve.
agreed
Wow, I hope one day he'll eventually get to fly it. He definitely deserves it.
"what ? you need a Spitfire wing ? mmm I think I might have one behind my garden shed I'll have a look later and let you know."........ ,,,, brilliant can you imagine having that in your garden !
zghvbn1 It's the one found in the lost property office! Where? Railway station? Airport? "I've come about the Spitfire wing?.""It's over there, by the arc of the covenant and under the holy grail!"
NIce
jijijijijijijijijijijijij
The question is what was it doing there and where is the rest of it
zghvbn1 IMAGINE IF ONE JUST RANDOMLY CRASHED INTO YOUR CAR I WOULDN'T BE MAD I'D BE HAPPY!
Dambuster YUP!
Lucky bastard, got himself a fully detailed 1:1 scale airfix model of a spitfire with working parts too!
if you're from the UK did you ever see James May make a 1:1 airfix spitfire on TV?
Toby Wenman I remember that! It was a part of May's Toy Stories series some years ago.
Toby Wenman i know that May is a model aircraft fan but i never knew he would be that dedicated, that's impressive.
He did a whole tv series making stuff like a full size lego house, mechano bridge, scallextric track around an actual race course and a hornby train line the length of an actual train line
Toby Wenman I'll check it out, thanks!
2:10 "I'm a Spitfire pilot." What an entry in your resumé.
I can't believe no modern company produces a spitfire replica. Arguably the most recognizable and beloved aircraft in history, and every Vet says they are a dream to fly. I am sure modern factory tech could cut down on the price/time required to produce one, but even if it was a small shop churning out a handful a year. I think most pilots would probably sell their soul to fly/own a Spit.
Cinnamanster A There are companies that reproduce kits for many vintage aircraft and fighters. I think the Supermarine company sells a spitfire kit, there's a few different Mustang providers (google thunder mustang) as well as various open cockpit biplanes.
Thanks for the Thunder Mustang! Now I know how much do I have to save to afford one
Mk12dexxa6 Too much unfortunately! No problem mate.
If you're into fighter inspired designs, like myself, then take a look at the super efficient TL Ultralight Stream. A little more affordable, cheap to run and beautiful. Can't beat the real thing though!
Adam Taylor Wow thanks a lot! Sure thing I'll check it out
Companies have tried but to be brutally honest there just isn't the sustainable market for them to deal with the regulatory issues and tool up to do it. WW2 vintage warbirds are insanely expensive to run even as a new build and AVGAS is only getting harder to buy and more expensive. A jet like an Aero L-29 is cheaper to buy, fuel and run than a Spitfire and it has better performance!
As someone mentions below there are companies that take wrecked airframes and build basically a new aircraft then transfer the identity. For the small number of people who can afford to run a warbird this is a preferable solution as it stands for what is a very niche market.
Even companies that build cheaper to run and build scale replicas have tended to struggle, there is a long list of failed companies trying to sell P-51 or Spitfire scale replicas. Regulatory authorisation is a killer for small companies trying to build scale fighter replicas and as others in the Kit-built industry will tell you one accident can kill your startup through litigation. Burt Rutan got out of that business for exactly that reason!
Those Pilots that can afford to run one will prefer an original or pay for one to be rebuilt.
He's more than earned the right to be proud. This is the first I'd heard of this and it is just beyond belief. Well done, Mr. Martin Phillips!
That's an awesome piece of history. WWII is fascinating
I'm a history geek and I completely agree!
Deus Vult!!!!
For those lucky enough not having to experience it! I feel so sorry for the generations having to experience both world wars in one single live! Even witnessing the modern wars from afar are enough to crush my belief in the human good... 😭
nougatbitz there's only a handful of people left who experienced both world wars
Erock Stoenescu ل
2:26 Holy shit, that start up. What a beautiful bird.
Joseph Pushkash fantastic isn't it, I love the sound of the merlin although the sound of both the Bristol Centaurus and the Rolls Royce Griphon are just as impressive
Joseph Pushkash personally prefer the griffon spitfires
Skippy BestDog a
i've never climaxed so hard in my life when i heard it
@@BatteredWalrus
R. R. GRIFFON.!!!
Why do companies always call fighter planes fighter jets? It should be painfully obvious what the difference is.
They should have put a warning in front of the video. "YOU MAY ADMIRE WHEN READY"...
Boooo =)
What a beautiful machine. The Spitfire and the Me109 are my favourite planes from that era. There's something very aesthetically pleasing about them.
Herp McDerp How about the Bf 109 - F4 trop, its a beauty in itself with its 2 extra 15mm cannons
Used to make model airplanes as a kid with my dad - including this one. Can't imagine the work put into this beast.
Did his friends know his personality, that in being given such an odd gift he would take it to this extent? They must have, or else why did they do it? I think it's amazing.
This is yet another story that deserves a full length documentary!
He didn't build a Spitfire, he bought a fuselage, wings and most of the parts. Had the whole lot rebuilt by professional aircraft restorer John Hart. This was cheque book restoration, and good luck to him and all who do so. It takes a lot of cheques and professionals to restore an aircraft that was lucky to survive 50 hrs of flying in the 1940's.
What a legend! Martin is the epitome of the spitfire spirit. Through all odds, succeed.
I love how some of the stock footage showed a F6F and for a split second, an avenger.
i don't nearly have this much patience i would proly got to about a wing an called it a day
KiNGstarNoah Boo, with your spelling I'm sure you wouldn't even build any part of that plane... To be honest, I would not either so who am I to judge?
KiNGstarNoah when you think about it, getting a wing and calling it a day, u would have completed it in a year
It is ''you're'' not ''your'', Don't try to talk about someones spelling when you have not checked yours Smartass, this is RUclips i don't check my spelling here this is not a job application its just a site
KiNGstarNoah to be fair he's right, it's your, not you're lol. You're wrong.
KiNGstarNoah Hey Einstein, it's actually 'your', not 'you're'.
I truly think that there is a market for a company to build replicas of these aircraft. So many people want them so why not build more. It be a great way for future generations to see how machinery has developed live as opposed to being locked up in a museum.
yeah i agree, but legal stuff will hinder it down
Aakash Shukla
There is a kitset replica Spitfire available. Look up Bob DeFord on RUclips. He built one in the late 90s and flew it for the first time in 2003.
Aakash Shukla There are companys that do replicas. But they aren't the real deal sadly, more like Cessnas that look like Spits
There are. My grandad built a replica about a decade ago. The kit came from a company out of Australia.
When the cost for 3D printing quality steel parts comes down...
It' infinitely easier to build a Spit by hand than by foot.
Well, you have a good point

Do you even english? Germans speak better than that
Mr. Sordo what’s wufftlaffta?
😂😂😂
Damn Rolls-Royce, you wanted to make everything! From Spitfire engines to bloody heaven's own automobiles.
they still make engines, not good sounding as a merlin tho. merlin just purrs. its just music.
Let's look up the snoringtractor's favourite engine maker in the list of current corporations.
Looking...Packard, Packard, Packard. Where are you...
Hm...search comes up with "Not found".
How ironic (I'll skip the three exclamation marks.)
++ MarsFKA ++ Hooray for boringwilburtractorfinnegan who, unlike oh dear packard, is still dirtying up the place like dogshit on one's best shoes.
The ultimate cut and shunt.
Humour apart, such a lovely aircraft. And so nice to see them flying in Britain's skies today.
I'm not much of a history geek but Spitfires are one of the things that really get me going
96% speed of sound?! Hahaha I would expect a spitfire pilot to know maximum speed of his aircraft :D
Martin Balon
www.bbc.com/future/story/20160505-the-spitfires-that-nearly-broke-the-sound-barrier
In his defense, they're not *supposed* to go 96% the speed of sound.
In fact they bloody well don't like it.
Martin Balon they nearly did though.....
The fastest recorded speed a spitfire ever went was .92 Mach
Propeller was wrecked and the Wings warped backwards. It landed safely though
The only thing I dislike about this video is it's too short! What an amazing achievement this gentleman has accomplished!
What can be more beautiful than a spitfire flying over the English country side... a lovely site to behold...
Out off all the famous fighters of WWII I would say the Spitfire is one of the most beautiful to look at.
I hope he'll get to fly it one day. All that effort put into it definitely needs to be rewarded
Bravo! Thank you for keeping this plane alive.
One of the greatest moments of my life was watching this plane fly. Nice vid❤
I love that most of the stock footage isn't of spitfires
"Here is a rivet go make a plane with it"
Saw two spitfires fly over The Needles in the Isle of Wight last week, country wouldn't be the same without em
I build a 1/72 Spitfire by Tamiya .. I cried everytime i look at it, the long hours it take, the paint, the sanding, the etc.. Absolutely Amazing !
This channel is so underrated!!!
You guys deserve way more than 1 million subscribers!
I WOULD LOVE to even just sit in such a plane.
What a badass pilot
Always loved ww2 aircraft, God bless, loved to have your skill.
Tears of joy I can't think of anything better
That's determination. Mad respect
Such a gorgeous and magnificent plane. Thanks for maintaining British heritage with this iconic beauty
Just incredible! So much respect for the work he put into that.

My favourite plane ✈ of all time is the spitfire
Hats off to this gentleman....What a great endeavor to take on such a massive project so that we can all enjoy seeing that wonderful plane flying again....Thank you!
That's what you call dedication and perseverance.
The older I get the least amazing things surprise me! What dedication, what ingenuity! Truly a Aspiring individual man!
Absolutely amazing!
This man deserves more public recognition,it is not every day that we can meet or know about someone that build or recreate a plane like the Spitfire. Sir I take my hat 🎩 off, and Kudos for you.
She looks absolutely amazing. What a job.
Nice, filmed this at the Torbay Airshow, now it is the most popular vid on my channel. Sounds amazing and will always hold a place in my heart
Well done Martin, im glad you finally got it finished and am pleased that i had a very small part in helping you build your dream. I have followed the progress and after i met you all those years ago i never doubted that you would do it.
Tony the Taxidriver with the white cab.
Thank you sir! For your profound efforts. Simply beautiful!
Well done good sir! An awesome piece of history revived and preserved. Good on you 👍
Now there's a DIY project to be proud of. Beautiful plane!
My hat's off to you for your dedication to completing the task. Your aircraft is a beautiful sight. May you enjoy flying her soon, and long may she fly in safety.
Wow, Martin Phillips, our collective hat is off to you and your amazing, wonderful recreation. What a thrill when if first flew, I'm sure! I too have a 'tool shop" and sell used machine tools, like the ones you no doubt used to recreate your wonderful assembly of historic aeronautical workpieces. We are humbled by your accomplishments !
2:27 I want that fidget spinner
BRAVO! This is PASSION!
Very well done Martin. You have one of the world's most beautiful and iconic planes which comes with one of the world's most haunting soundtracks. The envy of many but highly deserved.
And wow amazing. The Spitfire is my favorite aircraft.
Wow! That's serious dedication! I thought I was obsessed by Spitfires, but that really takes the biscuit. Well, the whole packet, and a nice cup of tea too!
Wow!!!! Absolute dedication.
This is great. I'm a spitfire fan too. Lovely work done there
What a man. Realizing your dreams.
as a kid first model I got as a gift was Spitfire model, its carved my heart since then, thank you for the great video ❤
Mann this guy is amazing!!!!
Absolutely awesome. Well done
Great guy, superb story! What an aircraft!
Fantastic job Martin.
So nice to see someone wanting to build this beautiful plane.
the most beautiful aircraft ever Made reborn from a ribet . that is a wonderful project . this is a strong will and comitment. Of course some idiotics comments mention Money as If it were the unreacheable Frontier . I see this proyect as a good example of the man's Nature...always pushing the limits beyond the unthicable. My respect to you Mr Philips.
cheers
ABSOLUTEL AND TOTALLY AWESOME!!!
It's so beautiful, I'm actually crying
I'm a simple man. I see Spitfire, I click. I see "built [...] by hand", I like. I see "City of Exeter", I favourite. :)
i looove the spitfire 😍😍
Now THAT is what I call commitment!
Truly amazing
Well done to you Martin.👏 An amazing story, of an Epic Achievement. I hope you get to fly her.🤞
your plane is really a beauty, for me the sweetest mark spitfire you hit to build.
What a beautiful work of art
This is the coolest thing I’ve ever seen
truly amazing
It must be absolutely gut wrenching that you can't even sit along for a flight in it never mind fly it ........after 14 years producing this masterpiece!
I am absolutely fascinated by this.
I love that engine sound
Music to my ears.
i love this movie , amazing job thanks guys
Love the spitfire even more after watching Dunkrik!
That's just beautiful
Big thumbs up. .gorgeous plane..
Marvelous!
The background of RR232 before Martin started working on it is amazing. Shipped to the Far East, fought hard, crashed, stripped, decades in the jungle, found, pieced together, shipped here, there, and finally rebuilt and returned to the air. Amazing is the only word.
Im lucky to see the lancaster bomber the spitfire and the hurricane each year at the Bournemouth air show just to see and hear all 3 fly over gives me goosebumps. Its crazy to think people took to the skys in these planes to fight a terrible war.Very brave men i have much respect.😊
Well done to you, Sir. What an immensely proud achievement....and it all started from a rivet your mates gave to you? Thank you for resurrecting this magnificent machine.
Brilliant!
Damn, I want to do the same thing, but with a Ta-152
A thing of beauty is a joy for ever
Love it . Thanks for sharing video
