My uncle, brother of my grand mum, use to be the Lead of Romanian MIG15 Squadron, and he holds the absolute altitude record with this apparatus. He's also the only one, as my knowledge, to restart the engine in the air. Due to the radial turbo compressor, the engine needs a very long freefell before the pressure to allow a new startup. He died back in the mid 90's and he's name it was Gigi Dudu. I use to hangs with him some summers in my youth period, ...fixing he's red Dacia 1310 CN! :) A very nice and friendly guy. God rest him!

I was _stunned_ at 6:12 to see just how pristine the cockpit is! It probably hasn't looked that clean and scratch-free since it left the factory more than half a century ago. Usually, old aircraft will have scratches and dents on every conceivable surface of the cockpit. Fantastic work!
In our city, such a MiG 15 stands like a monument in the memorial park in my neighborhood. As children, we explored this plane inside and out. That beautiful smell of sun-warmed aluminum
That's the coolest warbird. The opportunity to acquire that jet or similar aircraft is becoming rarer and rarer, and very hard to come by. This may never happen again, and you can't lose by fixing it up if you can handle the dough necessary to fix and maintain. I say GO FOR IT.
I went up in a MiG 15 20 odd years ago and I still remember every second of it. Learning how to combat G's with no pressure suit. It was a huge buzz. Got to fly it and do a barrel roll. Tough plane. Due to the angle of the wings, when it lands it causes ground effect and they literally have to dump it to get it on the ground. I remember the suspension bottoming out with a thud. Amazing day with Air Combat Australia
I flew in a -15 Ibis UTI in 1995 in northern California. Lots of work to maintain these birds.
Not a lot of room in cockpit if you're a tall person. Heavy on flight controls in flight I thought. Pretty neat experience.
@@831BeachBum Steering them on the taxiway is some fun
Every airplane has ground effect You just have to learn to write speed
@@Jatojammer
Ground effect is particularly dangerous with swept wing aircraft because the wingtips can stall, leading to a loss of aileron authority. If the stall worsens, the center of lift will shift to a point in which it's in front of the center of gravity, thus causing an unrecoverable pitch-up attitude at low altitude. The F-100 Super Sabre killed many pilots because by doing this "Sabre Dance".

Been waiting for this one. I love the early cold war jets. There's just something really cool about the last of the gunfighters.

The official Last of the Gunfighters was generally considered the Vought F8 Crusader. Four 20mm cannons

Ever see a Cougar...same Era? They look like they came out of the same Factory! Who made Who?
"Cougar" is the U.S.N.'s designation... There was one of our's called the "Panther". You hear alot about the mig- but not our Korean War Era U.S
Plane's.
@@akatripclaymore.9679 The Panther was the Grumman Grumman F9F-8 and the Cougar was the Grumman F9F-9. The Panther, the earlier model, first flew in ‘47 &, although I am an Air Force guy, I think it was the first operational carrier fighter. Just from its designation, you can tell the Cougar is a development of the Panther. The Panther was underpowered-like most early jets, but served in Korea mostly in ground support although it managed to down a MiG or two. The Cougar had swept-wings and a much stronger engine. It was introduced in the early to mid-fifties. Resemblence to the MiG-15 may be evident simply because of their post-war heritage. The US and USSR got a lot of jet tech from the same place- the Luftwaffe.

I look forward to these videos. im 56, have 40 hours of training (20 hours, 2 times 22 years apart) and never went the extra mile for actual license because of deployments, money and what not. I was 14 when i did my first training in a 152. I ran out of paper money, took one hour lessons per month, and just short of soloing. Same thing happened later, except i went on deployment and never made it back in the seat for training more.
Such a cool aircraft, I'd love to see one fly IRL and this is probably as close as I'll ever get.
That MIGs got Jimmy written all over it! Definitely buy it! Love to see you fly it some day soon.
We love everything you’re doing Jimmy! Keep it up!
I only flew one time. It was in the mid 70's. The lady was kind enough to give me a ride in her Piper Cub 62 (CF-OSI). It was so amazing that I was shaking from the sensory overload. I always wanted to be a pilot but, I suck at math so, I diverted my dream towards cars and small engines. Being afraid of heights came later on and, don't ask me where it came from. Jimmy's "youthful exuberance", is bringing me back when I was 12-13 years old, on that first and only flight.
Same. Suck at math and my vision sucks 😋
I think I gotta solution, ever tried microlights? You don't have to be amazing at maths to get one's license and it's relatively cheap. One of my instructors went and got his CPL and said he regrets not knowing about microlights sooner as he'd have gone straight for it. Furthermore if you can drive, then your vision is good enough.
Great Job Jim👍🏼 Thats a real valueble one.
I love watching the good ol boys work on the Soviet plane lol.
You are living the Dream Jimmy. Would love to get a ride in that one. Owning, and operating it would be a fair bit out side my current financial capability.

In case it hasn't already been pointed out, while this is a model of the better-known single seat MiG-15 "fighter jet", this particular sub variant is actually the two-seat trainer versiion.

@I MISS THE 90s👍😎 Why do you keep spamming this stupid question that has no relevance to the video at all? Are you a bot? Either way, the dude isn't stupid so I *highly* doubt he's going to give you medical advice of any kind 🤣. Also, (if you're not a bot) why do you, a) Ask Jimmy that question out of anyone else you could ask? And b) Think he has some kind of "secret" for this? Hell, you should talk to a damn medical professional if anything. I really hope you're not a bot because I'm genuinely curious, and I just don't understand why someone would make a bot to specifically spam this absurd question to Jimmy. It just doesn't make any sense. I guess it doesn't make any sense either way though...
I remember seeing photos of this back in the 90's. It was in the air and with another fighter with the name of Sabredance on its fuselage. They were some great photos, very rememberable. It was a cool jet then and even better now, get it!
Two old rivals the F86 saber jet and Mig used to go to air shows I saw them Chase each other's tails low level pretty neat

I do have to say, while it wont carry the whole family, I think you could make several trips back and forth to get them all and about break even on time. Definitely not on fuel.

Thank you for sharing.
there's one in a museum in my town ! hardly believed that this thing flies ! good job !
I would imagine the MiG is one of those that requires many more maintenance hours than flight hours. If your goal is to have something to take to an airshow twice a year, that's probably great, but if you want to jump in it and go like you do with the lancair (Cameron? i forget the name), this ain't it. That said, if only for the epic videos we all get to watch, i hope you end up going for it anyway.
He said in the video the FAA developed a 100 hour maintenance schedule just for this aircraft.

Jimmy, that's how they replaced the engine on A-4 Skyhawks. Two huge bolts on each side loosened up and slide the rear back, on its rack, then there is great access to the engine itself.

That spare Kilmov VK-1 engine in the trailer is a huge bonus.

Congrats Jimmy on getting the JET running. sounds great. there's alot of upkeep to keep it running and flying. more tools to buy..
How is that "ABANDONED! " Let's go Jimmy.
It's so cool that I walked all around this jet and touched it back in the 80's when it was in that museum at Mesa, AZ, I just don't remember the name of the place. I understand it's been closed and all the aircraft sold. They were restoring a rare two seater Spitfire. So sorry that facility is gone.
Jimmy, there's a YT video, about a week and a half ago, of a full flight in a 1954 mig15.
Includes the instructor- brief, preflight, startup and flight. You should watch this & maybe take a ride before buying this.
Search Matt Guthmiller.
No smoke, no flames weird considering you know what
Not really, MiG-15s don’t have an afterburner, so no burner plume, and lots of smoke on start typically only happens after an extensive amount of oil is placed in the engine to preserve it for long periods of time. For one of the first fighter jets, the MiG-15 actually burns fuel rather clean, so not a whole lot of smoke is trailed in flight. Google footage of the F-4 Phantom flying to see a plane that does not burn fuel very cleanly….
No, what?
Those centrifugal flow turbojet engines were rather fuel efficient once sorted out despite their portly girth. Have fun with it!
@@zachboyd4749 they do have afterburners
@@aj_2x170
No they don't, you're thinking of the 17. The MiG-17 did have an afterburner, but the MiG-15 didn't. The two are very similar in appearance, so it's easy to mix them up.

From a DCS World player, the Mig-15 is one of the most overlooked planes (for some good reasons, but it's still awesome), and in my opinion the prettiest-sounding engine.
Well, after all, it is the British Rolls-Royce "Nene" engine, unwisely licensed by Duh UK to Duh USSR...

As much as I wanna see you work on and fly this thing, I also remember (from immediate short-term memory) what an apparently fruitless and expensive disaster it was to try to get the 310 in the air. Plus, I really love your channel and so from a purely selfish perspective if nothing else (as a new fan and subscriber who loves your content) don't wanna lose you in a Mig-15 accident. 😬
@clhoyt - I agree with you on this... He can donate it to an aviation museum, that can display this amazing plane... Jimmy gets the Tax W/O for his other business ventures, the museum gets to properly display this historic plane, Jimmy has more time & resources to work on the 310, , and we can see many more episodes from Jimmy, as He and the MIG get to live, longer/happier/more productive lives, without going down in this amazing 70 y.o. fighter jet.
As much as Jimmy plays I think he is a serious pilot when it comes down to safety.
Ghey comment
IIRC, one out of four pilots died just trying to fly the thing.
I have years of experience with old migs... And they are great fun, as long as someone else is paying the bills. There are LOTS of MiG 15s for sale for a reason.
SERIOUSLY, go buy a nice L-39. Much cheaper to operate, much safer, and they don't have restrictive limits beyond which lies death, lol
I really hope you'll pass on the 15. Even go for a 17 if you really insist on an early MiG, but you will be so much happier in an L-39 or a Folland Gnat if you want supersonic.
Good luck. Check six.

That's "technically" not a MiG-15. That's a license-built Polish copy, a "PZL-Mielec SBLim-2." That specific aircraft was built in 1955, NOT 1966. The company that built it (PZL Mielec) is owned by Sikorsky, which is itself a subsidiary of Lockheed Martin. It last flew in July of 2016. It has NOT been "abandoned" and has not been grounded for 12 years.
