For me, the episode that killed the Simpsons was one from I think the 12th season where Homer dressed up like a panda, got raped by a male panda, and then the episode ended with Mr. Burns throwing fish guts at people from a parade float. It was so mean spirited I just couldn't keep stomaching it.
They reported on the news in 1999 that Maggie Roswell quit doing the show because of long distance. They never mentioned that it was due to money. Couldn’t they have done remote recording closer to her home? Nowadays I’m sure they would have come up with that solution.
I’ve always heard the episode where Principal Skinner is found out to be a different person who stole Skinner’s identity is when the golden age of Simpsons ended. Honestly, that should have been a Tree House of Horror episode. I think anytime the writers stretch too far outside the rules of the universe they betray the trust the audience has in the show. Maude’s death wasn’t in service to the story or the characters, it was just a shocking and sad event that left the audience feeling like this was a different show than it was the week before. The Simpsons really is a show that you have to appreciate for its different eras, and Maude’s death feels like it was the end of a significant one
My *biggest* gripe with the Simpsons has been the time scaling. It's hard to write around with a show thats been around 30+ years and refuses to die with dignity, but the 90s episode and then the more recent one where the adults are shown to be in high school more around Y2K, it undoes a lot of well established and well loved lore, my particular favorite being Skinner being a freaked out 'Nam vet. I *never* want to see a Simpsons character holding a smart phone.

I am one of the people that think the show went downhill after season 8/9. I came to Canada in 1994 at the age of 9 and The Simpsons helped me learn English and make friends because most kids where I grew up weren't allowed to watch it, including me. Seeing it now is like seeing a dead pet that your dad ran over backing out of the driveway and insisted on using taxadermy in order to make it up to you. I am going to sound cheesy, but I honestly get a bit sad whenever I see an episode from the 1990's and remembering how great the show was back then and how Fox/Disney have mutated it into a monstrosity. Thanks for the video, man. Can't wait for the next gem.

In hindsight killing off Maude was a pretty dumb idea. They said it would lead to more interesting stories for Ned, but that just led to him becoming Fladerize (with his last name used as the term). And the episode itself came off mean-spirited. And yeah he was able to move on and married Enda, that too wouldn't last when her VA passed and so they had to retire the character and have him be a widower again.
One example of the show jumping the shark was where Homer and Marge get framed for murder and were about to be executed, but as it turns out it was all just a prank set up by a crazy reality show called “you got framed” ! This is one of the reasons why I prefer to think of the 2007 movie as the true finale of the series and everything else after that non-canon.

I remember crying and losing sleep when they killed her off. I also started hating Homer, because he just as much changed for the worst as any other character.
To me, The Simpsons jumped the shark when in "Monty Can't Buy Me Love" Mr. Burns went on-air with the shock jock and endured his abuse without either ineffectually assaulting him, or ordering Smithers or his guards to have him beaten or killed.

If I could pick a single episode, it would be the eyeballs hanging out of people's sockets. It was not a treehouse of horror or other non-canon episode. When they started doing the cartoon physics stuff like that it hurt the series. Stuff that should be only in halloween or itchy and scratchy gag. Like that episode where Homer gets mauled by a badger, lifts up his shirt and exposed organs. All for a crappy brief gag that if removed would've improve the episode.
@@nifralo2752 Deep Space Homer wasn't too wild really. Premise was silly, but the only cartoonish thing was crashing into the reporter's convention. Otherwise it was played kinda straight. Even the last little bit of plot with Homer breaks the door, potentially burning them on re-entry, and then repairs it is somewhat realistic. Though, a fairly early one I can point to was the gag in Marge vs. the Monorail when the conjoined twins get split by the anchor and immediately high-five each other.
I just kinda wish they just made her either a quiet character or just had a temp voice for her, because only a handful of seasons later she returned to the series. Think of all the other stories they could have done with her and Ned that now can’t happen because of some studio meddling. (I do want to tho this is a great video that I can tell you put a lot of work in!)

For me I can put up with a fair amount of whacky stuff (although I would say put up with, not enjoy), like the Skinner is an imposter, Homer is an astronaut (I actually really liked both those episodes) and all that sort of stuff. It's the departure from solid full plots, where characters have genuine interactions and conflicts and so on with jokes and gags added on like cake frosting. But modern seasons are just a massive string of jokes with a plot that barely makes any sense. For me, golden age episodes need to be watched in its entirety to be enjoyed. Modern episodes you could snip a 5 minutes chunk, almost at random, out of the episode and you wouldn't miss out on anything.

However, the episode that made me give up on The Simpsons was That 90s Show, the one where Homer invents grunge. It completely contradicted so much Simpsons lore. Suddenly, Homer and Marge met in the 90s despite the show having already been on the air by that point, The B Sharps never existed and so on. It really didn't sit well with me and was perhaps a sign that the show wasn't for the original fans anymore but rather the next generation. I'd check out a few episodes after that but I could never get as into it or as invested in it after that.

There was nothing wrong with that Maude replacement. I didn’t even know there was a difference until now. The Simpson officially died when Maude was killed off. Ned is absolutely not a single father. That line at the end of ‘I’m glad Maude is dead’ makes watching this video a waste of time and assures I’ll never watch this channel again.

They only got one more season and bringing him back later after all the complaints from viewers didn't save them. The movie wrote that death sincerely, but everything after it suffered. Killing characters is way overrated by writters unless it's taking down a villian and it's part of the plot goal. Those are the only ones who stay around too long in a story.

So she was transformed into a corpse that never ages or decays? I ask because that would be the inverse of ghosts, vampires, ghouls, and any other dead thing that behaves as though it is not AKA undead.

Not sure why you spent the whole video showing why it was an objectively bad decsion to kill her then said it was a good thing in the end. It was one of the many signs the Simpsons had declined. Turning it into a joke like they did also made it seem much more mean spirited and only about getting rid of her. Good way to deflate all the hype too. If she'd got something terminal and Ned had to say his goodbyes at least that would have seemed sincere. No, I don't think Simpsons will be around forever. They're went from antiestablishment for the people to supporting the establishment, and lost their uniqueness.
I suppose Transformers:The Movie did worse in that killing Optimus would have been like killing Homer for the Simpsons. They only got one more season and bringing him back later after all the complaints from viewers didn't save them. The movie wrote that death sincerely, but everything after it suffered. Killing characters is way overrated by writters unless it's taking down a villian and it's part of the plot goal. Those are the only ones who stay around too long in a story.
