I own Seasons 1-20 on DVD. I always love the feeling of owning my favorite show or movie on physical media instead of streaming. If only they release Seasons 21-36 on physical media also, but sadly we probably won't see that happening anytime soon.
@@MrSmith1984 I would to see a complete series Blu-Ray release of How I Met Your Mother to happen for the 20th anniversary next year, hopefully Shout Factory could make a new deal with Disney one day. Season 4 was the only Blu-Ray release of the show they ever did it was due to poor sales, so the rest of the seasons were DVD exclusives. 20th Century Fox also released a few shows of selected seasons on Blu-Ray like: Futurama, Modern Family (the first 4 seasons) and It's Always Sunny (Seasons 6-8 and the Christmas special, Season 9 was gonna be released but it was cancelled). They discontinue releasing their TV shows on Blu-Ray since 2015. I do hope The Bear and Only Murders (2 critically acclaimed shows on Hulu/Disney+) could get physical releases too, would love to see special features and audio commentaries for both shows too. And also Disney mistreated the physical media department for not releasing the recent cult-classic horror film Barbarian (which the director Zach Cregger already recorded the audio commentary), high hopes for Criterion (since they recently released All of Us Strangers and The Shape of Water to the collection).
This has made me really want to just watch my Sampson’s DVDs again. Sure I can sit and watch them on Disney plus. But I just love the care that went into these releases. The art. The discs. And those great menus. Just something so soothing unfolding them and chucking them in. Love physical media so much
Fun fact: the first five seasons were reprinted in seasons 6-10’s packaging style in 2011, with those versions of seasons 4 and 5 even coming with art prints featuring the extra gags underneath the disc trays of the original releases that otherwise couldn’t be preserved with the box style change. Also, while technically not an official release as it was not sold in stores, Fox printed an English VHS for The Simpsons Movie in 2007, intended exclusively to be shared with U.S. and Canadian retailers interested in picking up DVD and Blu-ray copies of the film (yes, really). This technically makes the movie the final Simpsons production to get a legitimate VHS release. However, don’t try spending thousands of dollars on grabbing a copy unless if you’re an extreme completionist, as there’s nothing on the tape beyond the film itself and Fox’s usual legal information right before it.
Seeing all the really early VHS tapes really reminds me of how weird and unique season 1 and 2 Simpsons art can be (when Bart had a blue shirt on almost all marketing) it makes me to play the Simpsons arcade game again
Fun fact: Christmas with the Simpsons is the only Simpsons DVD (that I’m aware of) that appears in the show itself. Appearing in S25 E8, “White Christmas Blues”
Just a quick note. The Simpsons Movie had a limited release that was the standard region 2 UK DVD with the inclusion of a small Homer plush. From what I remember, they were available from Tesco (at least that's where my dad bought our copy from), and it still sits proudly on my shelf to this day! Not sure which other Fox movies included it, but the DVD release of X-Men : The Last Stand included a storyboard animatic of a scene from the Simpsons movie (which also had alternate/extended dialogue). The scene was in Alaska with Homer whipping the dogs. I can't remember where, but I feel like I saw a storyboard to the scene where Marge begs Homer to dispose of the pig crap properly. The annoying thing is, those deleted scenes on the DVD only seem to be a small portion of what was cut. There's so many bits in the trailers that were must have been cut for time/pacing or even possibly story reasons. Apologies for the long post! EDIT: There's a UK VHS release of season 3. There's a copy on eBay for £10. Strangely enough, the packaging is very similar to its DVD counterpart.
9:20 - It's first aired episode, but the actual first is "Some Enchanted Evening" (thus why that one in reruns airs first whilst the special airs in its proper 8th place).
So, somewhat interestingly, the digital releases of the post-season 20..... seasons have what I believe would have been used for the potential DVD boxarts of these seasons. They are: Season 19 = Milhouse on a light green background (different to the DVD boxart) Season 20 = Moe on an orange background (different to the DVD boxart) Season 21 = Mr Burns on a pink background Season 22 = Mrs Krabapple on a purple background Season 23 = Ned on a blue background Season 24 = Grampa Simpson on a green background Season 25 = Apu on a light orange background Season 26 = Duffman on a turquoise background Season 27 = Selma on a purple background Season 28 = Chief Wiggum on a red background Season 29 = Bumblebee Man on a blue background Season 30 = Troy McClure on a magenta background Season 31 = Francine Spuckler on a purple background Season 32 = Bleeding Gums Murphy on a turquoise background Season 33 = God on a blue gackground Season 34 = Satan on a blue background Season 35 = An entire scene of The Simpsons with Homer about to eat pink frosted donuts, some butterflies, Bart skateboarding, Lisa playing her sax with a rainbow shooting out the end, Marge laughing with her hand on her mouth
Great video! I always liked the early season dvd boxes for their looks and high quality feel. Those compilation releases look quite nice as well, almost makes me want to buy them.
Imagine if they had continued to release the complete seasons with just TWO episode per VHS tape. To own the complete collection, you'd be reaching 400 cassettes soon, and you'd need about 10 meters (approx 33 feet) of shelf space to store all of them.
1. If you count the original shorts on the Tracy Ullman show, the first releases of The Simpsons on physical media were the original 1989 VHS of Working Girl (US), the original 1989/1990 VHS of Say Anything (US, Australia, and presumably UK), and The War of the Roses (UK and Australian rental copies). These movies (except for Working Girl) involved Gracie Films. 2. If Disney is ever going to release The Simpsons on physical media ever again, it's probably going to be a 4K of The Simpsons Movie and/or a release of a second movie (if that's ever going to happen). Edit: I wish we got more VHS tapes in the US.
Now every single episode of the series (except for one obvious exception that being the first episode of the third season “Stark Raving Dad”) is on Disney+
I used to get the Simpsons boxsets every year for Christmas and I used to be so excited. Bear in mind I was a British viewer and this was often my first viewing of many of the episodes, having not had access to Sky One at this point and Channel 4 was still only showing the earlier seasons back then. Collected them all up to Season 18. Never got around to getting 19 and now it appears to be as rare as hen's teeth and extortionately overpriced which is a shame. I also had the Around the World, Dark Secrets, and Christmas DVDs, as well as the Heaven and Hell and Treehouse of Horror VHS tapes. I do feel sympathy for my mum as I was probably asking to buy a new VHS or DVD from Woolworths every time we went in, I was pretty obsessed with the show in those days. I still have my DVDs. They have languished in storage for several years but I recently got them back out and am displaying them on my shelf in pride. Those early boxsets were probably some of the best made sets ever. Such effort went into them and they were worth every single penny.
All I want is the Treehouse of Horror episodes collected now, given up on getting seasons. That and maybe a rerelease of 20 for those in the UK who never got it, but being picky there.
Even though streaming sells more i hope that more seasons of The Simpsons will be released on DVD in the future. I wanna have atleast seasons 21 to 28 too in my collection. There are still some great episodes that came later on. 💛
Same with How I Met Your Mother as a complete series Blu-Ray release (Season 4 was the only Blu-Ray release they ever did due to poor sales so that the rest of the seasons are exclusively to DVD), New Girl (Seasons 1-3 were released on DVD at retail stores while the rest of the seasons are MOD Amazon DVD-R exclusive releases), Bob's Burgers (Season 1 was the only retail DVD release they ever did and Seasons 2-10 are MOD Amazon DVD-R exclusive releases) and Malcolm in the Middle (which Season 1 was the only season to be released in North America as Season 2 was supposed to be released on Fall 2003 but due to amount of uses of licensing music throughout the show that were too expensive to release, it was cancelled. However the entire series was released in European countries like the UK, France and Germany as the show was popular in Europe).
5:22 Doctor Who, now that it’s a Disney+ original outside of the UK, is only begrudgingly getting releases of the new episodes. The 60th anniversary specials, which aired a year ago, only just got a US DVD release.
I remember being very content with just recording the season onto tape of tv and never considered buying the VHS releases when they came out but got all the season DvDS.
I have the first 10 seasons that I still own for a long time ago. Plus from what i've heard that Season 7, Disc 1 seems to be defected as if you play that one Treehouse of Horror episode, it will skip.
This show and others like Family Guy, American Dad, South Park, Spongebob, NCIS, It’s Always Sunny and Grey’s Anatomy are seemingly immune from cancellation. But just because they are cancel proof, doesn’t mean they are immune from haters.
My biggest regret is not stocking up on the early seasons when wally world was practically giving em away. They went from like 35-45$ a season to like 7-10 depending on the season. I picked up season 2 and 4.
14:05 dude I own a Latin American tape with this same art (but with a blue background) called "Grandes Éxitos de Los Simpson" (or "The Simpsons' Greatest Hits" in English)! I actually could NEVER find information on that tape but i very much assure you it's not a bootleg. It also says it's volume 1? It comes with the episodes the Christmas special, Seymour Skinner's Badasssss Song, Trash of the Titans, Bart gets an F & And Maggie Makes Three. Each episode has a blurb with things like "The Simpsons' 100th/200th episode" or "The episode with the hughest TV rating on the USA". It says it was made in México and has copyright for 1999 so i assume it came out in either 1999 or 2000
17:43 It's literally this tape but the art is different. Ok. Sorry. Still kinda cool I got a jumpscare when I saw that art and you said it was a very obscure release
I really went all in on collecting the 'Simpsons Classics' range on DVD. Sure they aren't complete seasons, but the artwork just looks so good together on the shelf.
something really strange I've never seen mentioned is that only for Season 8 the disc art is different between the "head set" and the standard edition all other content is the same tho
I had the first two of those german MCs, they were just the audio of 2 episodes each, with a narrator filling in the blanks of the missing visuals. Iirc these existed for a lot of tv shows, especially cartoons.
Simpsons Season box sets were incredibly special to me and my brother, we “borrowed” season 3 from our weird friend and our very first one we owned was Season 4 so Kamp Krusty is beyond important to me, we basically bought a new season before we go on vacation as our main source of entertainment
24:09 *this* , this is how I discovered the show,my parents bought it because it had a discount, I watched it non stop when I was in kindergarten absolutely kino episodes
This took me back, I remember most of these DVD compilations, I used to rent some of them. Also fun fact: Blame It On Lisa was banned in Brazil for almost a decade, so the DVD releases were the only official way to watch the episode here for a while
2:48 heres the thing, so when i was young we got the season 6 boxset (the chunky one people dont like) from blockbuster, and as you may recall the reveal of who shot mr burns was not told in season 6, it was s7 ep 1, so this was the only way i found out and i assumed correctly that maggie was the shooter lmao edit 11:27 man alot of nostalgia i forgot about, i had the bart the general and krusty gets busted tapes here, and i distinctly remember watching them over and over but one time i let it run all the way through before restarting and seeing the tracy ulman short at the end and being so confused about what it was, had no idea how far back the simpsons went
7:24 If i'm not mistaken, at least one of the audio commentaries on Disney+ is shorter than on the DVD. There are several scenes where they pause the movie. Then the picture goes black and white and they talk during the freezed frame for 2-3 minutes. I think the first scene in the church has such a pausing moment. And that's missing on Disney+. Or at least it used to be missing.
I first watched the Simpson in 1991 when Sky bought out British Satellite Broadcasting Broadcast I grew up on the old pipeline cable TV when Sky Sport was the Sports Channel Sky Movies was The Movie Channel and UK Gold was Galaxy. I am so old I remember when Sky One was Sky Channel and Sky Premier was just Premier before Sky did a relaunch in the autumn of 1989. The Children's Channel and the DJ Kat Show. Well, one myth busted I didn't grow up with just four channels from 1982 when my parents first got cable TV and the TV from Radio Rentals.
You have a few incorrect release dates for some of the compilation videos. Dark Secrets, Murder Mysteries and Crime & Punishment were released in 1997. Sex Lies, Against the World, Heaven and Hell, and Last Temptation were released in 1998. Too Hot for TV, Hollywood, Bart Wars and Greatest Hits were 1999.
I wish Simpsons would go the family guy and south park route and give us the seasons split into volumes like seasons 1-10 and then 11-20 and so on like south park did with their dvd collection
I wanna eventually get some of the disc releases of the simpsons. I’ve recently started collecting physical media and having some of the classics would be good
will never forgive them for that star wars themed DVD cover. 7 year old me was so disappointing thinking it was gonna be a simpsons star wars parody like family guy
Back in 1999 the Simpsons had a wild re-emergence in Germany, beeing a 'good' yet somewhat obscure show they released a panini Sticker series which a lot of people around me just had...it was wild with smelly stickers. In the summer of '99 I remember getting 2 German releases (too hot for TV and the crime one), this videos were high quality and I Stil have the copies.
I love all the special features on the season dvds, especially the commentaries. Then there's season 20, which is so incredibly bare bones cuz it was rushed out the door the second the final episode of the season had aired.
I remember I got the re-release of Simpsons Bart Wars as a kid back in 05 and I thought it was gonna be a Star Wars parody featuring the Simpsons ala FG "Blue Harvest" series. I was definitely wrong but even to this day my sister and I quote Dog of Death because the whole opening of Springfield cashing in on the Lottery is still pretty funny. Also Marge be not Proud is a really good episode of not to be a spoiled brat and realizing you can't get what you want all the time. Kid me still was disappointed the Star Wars themed episode Mayor to the Mob was a parody of The Bodyguard, but it taught me about conventions and who Mark Hamill was so that's a plus lol
My ex took all my box sets but I have Christmas with the simpsons (2003) and the first vhs set of best of the simpsons(1997) I'd love to get all of what I had back
Similar to the cut Tourette scene on Marge Gets a Job from Risky Business, The Simpsons Greatest Hits actually features the version of "Trash Of The Titans" with the in memory dedication card for Linda McCartney which if I'm correct is missing from the Season 7 dvd release itself.
I have the box sets up to season 18, plus season 20 and the movie. I kind of stopped buying dvds in general after awhile. Great, now I've been reminded that I'm missing two seasons and they cost way more now.
I want to see seasons 1-12 and 18 of The Simpsons on Blu-ray as well as The Simpsons Movie on 4K UHD. But however, I want the Blu-ray releases to be presented in their original aspect ratio like some older anime being released on Blu-ray. If Buena Vista/Disney doesn’t want to release them, maybe a different distributor can like Discotek Media can do the job. Perhaps maybe include a complete series set of The Critic and Dilbert on Blu-ray as well.
Is this a re-upload or there is another video just like this around the site? Edit: it was another video " The Art of Ruining a DVD Collection (The Simpsons) "
Aw man it didnt occur to me until i watched this how many of those VHS releases I had. I miss the days of those and BBC Two/Sky One being the ways i watched Simpsons.
Omg i had pretty much every one of those vhs and dvd complication releases other than those ones that were mostly white covers never seen them before, the nostalgia flood I've had watching this video has been insane, only had seasons 1-3 on dvd tho
I own the first 10 seasons of The Simpsons on DVD, and the quality of the packaging is so good. I own DVDs of other shows, and they get the job done. But with The Simpsons, from the extremely helpful episode guide booklet and just the general spacing of the box (so the discs aren't all on top of each), the Simpsons DVD packaging is so good.
I remember a special pack for the three first seasons in a Bart's head shape. I was hoping to get that on Christmas (at that time), but my parets bought them separately. Warning: this is not a Mandella Effect.... and I can't find a picture of that box on any search
The german mc's are just the audio from the episodes (without extra narration, so if you wanna experience it for yourself, just listen to the audiotrack of the episode without the video)
What the heck is a mc cassette? Presume you mean music cassette? I like the idea of Simpsons audio episodes, but presumably they're just the German dubs (perhaps with added narration)?
"It was released as part of a promotion by newspaper, News of the World and The Sun" What next? A Futurama VHS released by Enron and Barings Bank? 14:20
I honestly prefer the original design of Russ Cargill in The Simpsons Movie. He looks more unpredictable. The one that we got looks extremely like a stereotypical villain. Also, fun fact they do want to end the show, but they don’t really know how to. I say end it on a sequel movie. Maggie alludes to that during the credits of the first movie.
Oh! I literally watched the episode with Bart faking 'rabies' on Disney+ the other day. At the time I thought 'am I having a mandela effect moment or maybe an aneurysm as I'm sure he used to say tourettes'. Also rabies makes less sense in context!
So neither "Simpsons Go Hollywood" or "Simpsons Go TO Hollywood" contained the episode "Radioactive Man" i.e. the one actually about a Hollywood movie
Boy, I really hope somebody got fired for that blunder.
I own Seasons 1-20 on DVD. I always love the feeling of owning my favorite show or movie on physical media instead of streaming. If only they release Seasons 21-36 on physical media also, but sadly we probably won't see that happening anytime soon.

Next natural progression is “The Wacky World of Futurama’s DVD Releases”.
Or the wacky world of family guy dvd releases
Or King of the Hill
Or Beavis and Butt-Head
Either that or Family Guy... if he didn't already back a video about that.

Also fun fact: Blame It On Lisa was banned in Brazil for almost a decade, so the DVD releases were the only official way to watch the episode here for a while
2:48 heres the thing, so when i was young we got the season 6 boxset (the chunky one people dont like) from blockbuster, and as you may recall the reveal of who shot mr burns was not told in season 6, it was s7 ep 1, so this was the only way i found out and i assumed correctly that maggie was the shooter lmao
edit 11:27 man alot of nostalgia i forgot about, i had the bart the general and krusty gets busted tapes here, and i distinctly remember watching them over and over but one time i let it run all the way through before restarting and seeing the tracy ulman short at the end and being so confused about what it was, had no idea how far back the simpsons went
Casually out here dropping Simpsons commentary in 8k 👍
Hey man, i think you’ve really found your niche with these dvd videos. Keep up the great work!👍
i love dvds! your channel remidns me of patmac and i love it!!
Bro, now you got to do family guy or SpongeBob
You are the first video that I’ve come across on RUclips that has a 8K resolution option
Enjoyable video. Never heard anyone pronounce 'compilation' like that before though lol.
I wish Simpsons would go the family guy and south park route and give us the seasons split into volumes like seasons 1-10 and then 11-20 and so on like south park did with their dvd collection
I wanna eventually get some of the disc releases of the simpsons. I’ve recently started collecting physical media and having some of the classics would be good
Those first four VHS tapes were Definitely released in Australia. I rented them more times than you can possibly count
will never forgive them for that star wars themed DVD cover.
7 year old me was so disappointing thinking it was gonna be a simpsons star wars parody like family guy
All of mine seem to have trouble playing. The discs look real wavy and rainbow like oil in water. I feel like disc rot is common with this series.
I need content like this specifically going indepth about home media releases cx
21:00 in Australia specifically year two part two was released June 2001
Kid me still was disappointed the Star Wars themed episode Mayor to the Mob was a parody of The Bodyguard, but it taught me about conventions and who Mark Hamill was so that's a plus lol
times of our lives
too bad they stopped the dvds, I like season 21 and 33+ (22 to 32 are alright but I don't feel too strongly about having them on dvd)
Weird to think just how little episodes passed season 2 were released on vhs in reigon 1
My ex took all my box sets but I have Christmas with the simpsons (2003) and the first vhs set of best of the simpsons(1997) I'd love to get all of what I had back
i LOVE the plastic heads versions, i have all of them for me they are so creative i don't know any other show that did that
Similar to the cut Tourette scene on Marge Gets a Job from Risky Business, The Simpsons Greatest Hits actually features the version of "Trash Of The Titans" with the in memory dedication card for Linda McCartney which if I'm correct is missing from the Season 7 dvd release itself.
I have the box sets up to season 18, plus season 20 and the movie. I kind of stopped buying dvds in general after awhile. Great, now I've been reminded that I'm missing two seasons and they cost way more now.
Funny enough that threehouse of horror presents is based on a threehouse of horror comic from like 2005 or something
The season 20 set doesn't have audio commentary, which is the whole thing I bought them for. So I don't own season 20.
They could probably do simpsons xmas 3 dvd
It's best to forget the Simpsons head. Thank God Disney lets us stream all of them.
Hmmm….EXCEPT for “Stark Raving Dad”. Yeah, I say forget Disney+ and get the DVDs.
0:35 they better of included the New York episode
I wonder if if better to get season 13-17 and 20 on dvd or blu ray+the movie
Fun fact there’s actually a season 3 vhs set
I feel as though Heaven & Hell must have come out in the late 90s rather than 2002, I definitely owned it as a kid (or my brain is Mandela-ing me)
It did, it came out in 1998. Unfortunately, almost all of the VHS release dates in the video are incorrect.
You should do a video on spongebob but like this
Staring at my season 2 box set right now, proud of the fact that I happened to get the best one, in my childhood😂.
Love these videos but if I have to hear the doki doki crazy music one more time istg
Loved the simpsons , awesome video 👌👌👌
That was extra Simpy, baby...🤘🏼💯✔️
I won the first tape of The Simpsons Collections
" Bart the General ". I also have the one with Marge bowling
Great video!
Simpsons DVDs when I was a little kid 🎮
"It was released as part of a promotion by newspaper, News of the World and The Sun"
What next? A Futurama VHS released by Enron and Barings Bank? 14:20
2:10
*ALLEGEDLY did
Can anyone explain to me why The Simpson's Shorts where never released beyond the occasional VHS & DVD Release?
South Korea still had 📼 back then? 🤯
Reminds me of the Simple Jack VHS in Tropic Thunder.
Don’t forget American dad
