he has the oddest picking movement. this is a perfect example of personal preference. any uppity teacher would say he is playing with a bad form and therefore is seriously inhibiting his skill and wont ever get good...and yet here is is...playing damn good in that wierd awkward-ass manner. clearly it works for him, and that is why i hate it when people tell musicians they are "playing wrong". music is art...the only way to do art wrong is if you are attempting a result and failing. if you are achieving the result you intended, however you do that is therefore correct for you and "form" is just a suggestion for the masses because its a formulaic way that helps statistically more people than it holds back. everything else is what you like.
When I started playing, I used to hold the pick between my thumb and middle finger. It was comfortable that way. Then some dude (who really couldn't play for shit anyway) called me out about it and made me feel retarded, so I started holding the pick the "normal" way. Some years later, I learned that Eddie Van Halen held his pick like that, so he could quickly alternate between tapping and picking. Point is, there was never anything "wrong" with it to begin with.
You should look at Marty Friedman if you want weird picking techniques. All in all, these guys are really talented, don't expect to have a retarded picking and play good because they do. You should better learn the correct form and go from there.
How is his form "bad"? As far as I am concerned, proper form is mostly economy of movement: by maintaining good posture, you keep all muscles as relaxed as possible, maximizing what you can play and minimizing the risk of repetitive stress injuries like tendonitis. Do you see any tension or strain in his right arm?

Funniest thing about that is the fact that Jim only wrote 2 songs on it and 1 was because the first got removed from the album. >< Jim never took any credit from it but still kept the rewards haha.
bigshexxy Jim is a hipster, look at the glasses style, beard and hair when he's not got a cap on, and tight jeans and obviously the shoes. He's known for not looking classically "metal"
To the editors: most people watching these kind of videos care about specifics or details of the performance and your editing wankery just makes it hard to focus on what were here to see... which is mostly what he's doing with his left and right hand at the same time. Know your audience and edit appropriately! The video is interesting enough as it is.. it doesn't need you to help spice it up.
There is no doubt Jim Root is a phenomenal musician. My ONLY complaint is that his artist model guitars are made so cheaply... *I AM NOT* hating on Jim...It's Fender. There has to be some way to get his model of guitar with all the good shit like Graphite Reinforcement Rods, shielding, Luminlay Side Position Markers, and block inlays.
Rifle Twist I generally don't like fender so much as a general rule, but their artist signature stuff is poo even compared with much cheaper stuff, PRS on the other hand make some lovely stuff on the cheap, my Dave Navarro PRS only cost me about $700 and has been great since day dot
I'm gonna be honest. I'm a vintage guy and I'm not a huge fan of brands like PRS or Ibanez and I personally love fender. They're more my cup of tea. And on any guitar I put p90 pickups. And if I'm gonna play metal, which I do a lot, although I mainly play blues and jazz because it's better practice, but I'll put EMG's in my Fenders. I'm a huge strat and tele fan. But we all have opinions
Coming from an extreme-metaller, I always thought this was a really strong song. There's definitely an unsettling amount of darkness in that intro riff, and the chorus too with that dissonance. Much darker than most nu-metal. Great main riff.
It also has rear mounted electronics, doing away with the front mounted control plate on typical Telecasters. They may have made a Telecaster like this before, but Jim Root's is the only real Fender Tele I've seen without the control plate.
I rmemeber hearing left behind in earphones for the first time and going "What in the hell kind of amp orduces a searing tone like that?" I still to this day cant figure out how they got a guitar and amp to sound so razor sharp like that. its borderline unlistenable but my Fav slipknot song.
MrFrekcs I don't really see what's bad about it. There are good angles of Jim playing the song and it's not like the audio is off sync with the video. Can you point out to me what is so terrible about this? coz I'm not seeing it
Farhan Maulana omg he looks like the former stone sour guitarist and even like the slipknot one wtf. Makes it even more weird that hes covering a slipknot song
Jim's improv is beautiful it's too bad that his more interesting playing is kinda hidden and you gotta dive a bit deep into his stuff to find his unique playing. that's for the most part why Jim is just considered an average guitar playing from outside prespective simply cuz Jim doesn't really show what he is truly capable of skill-wise
2:51 wrong scene again . sound was going Up(hitting higer notes ) , but arm down . lol , twice fail in this vid . // i feel so special now cause i notice it .
Best left behind guitar cover yet, he should do more Slipknot covers.
I agree
I feel like Jim Root is kinda underrated as a musician. He's really good.
He is an incredible musician
he should try out for slipknot
oh wait...
Stone sour too!
@@muhammadirsyazman8389 hes ex guitarist from stone sour you silly goose
Creekcon yoo chill my brother. Im just joking
@@muhammadirsyazman8389 so am i you silly goose
the instrumental sounds so happy
Yep, it's the most melodic song off IOWA.
@@befrnigel sounds like nu metal to me.
@@Corycogo I totally agree with you lol
Corey's vocals is what makes this song so angry
Fav member of slipknot by far!!
Same here.
Have u heard of this guy called Corey Taylor?
Same
Mick Thomson?? Corey Taylor???
The slipknot guys are awesome dudes, been watching loads on them recently. But I have to say I have a new man crush on jim. Just such a cool guy
Sounds completely different without vocals.
It really does. Kinda.
The choruses sound much more polite I agree haha
true.
Chorus sounds 2000's punk poppy, without the vocals. Almost upbeat.
But for me it's great to hear this guitar parts of his.

Blah Blahsen maybe because he’s left handed and plays right hand.

Blah Blahsen beautifully put. love it
Always loved how he adds octives to the riffs, so many people have ripped off that same shit
I love how he crosses his legs just like an ole folk guitarist
I think cause his knees go over his waistline when he sits. Dude is huge.
Well he is 6'6.
He probably did that when he first recorded the song in the studio among many others.
It gives the guitar a more vertical angle which is easier to play
Not to mention, he's wearing the Uncle Mike's 😎
As I close my eyes, I feel it all slipping away!!
He is the backbone of the band along with Mick, these sick riffs are worth Slipknot is deserving...
We love you jimmmmmm
I feel like if you turned the distortion off, added some reverb and played this on some single-coils, you'd have a decent surf track.
A bit dissonant for a surf track.
Or pop punk haha
My favorite tune on Iowa. Such a sick groove.
I love his playing style! The way he and Mick play off of each other is what Slipknot so great in my opinion.
Cant believe the old guitarist of stone sour is trying to get credit for a slipknot song smh youtube man
E Ho I sure as hell hope you’re joking
Nut Yeet 😤😤😤😤 fuckin scammers these days
Honest answer, are you joking?
it’s sad ppl having to ask you if it’s a joke like no shit
@@Criticalr6 they are dumb as fuck
Love the way he bends the notes at the end of the chorus
Jim Root - A metal hipster.
100 percent
This is the One and only way to play left behind.
Correct.
I mean there is Mick’s rhythm part that is a little different
To be honest, I dont like those little "passages" he does in the middle of the song, it makes it sounds happy idk... Same thing with psychosocial
Thiago Haub idk man when I hear this song and psychosocial happy is the last thing that comes to mind
Finally someone that plays it correctly 👏🏻👏🏻
Why he gets so much hate man... hes just a good guitarist
Dude no one hates Jim. Trust me.
@@metalheadblues Hmm, I don't know about that. I'll like Jim though.

What I wouldn't give for that Slipknot self-titled platinum plaque in the background. Still the most Monumental album release of all time
Funniest thing about that is the fact that Jim only wrote 2 songs on it and 1 was because the first got removed from the album. ><
Jim never took any credit from it but still kept the rewards haha.
Very underrated guitar player
This was FN awesome 🔥🔥🔥
Left behind my fav. Song
Дед (Джеймс) красавчик, играет круто, я считаю, что в Slipknot лучшие музыканты ❤
Probably my all time favorite song..this is a masterpiece of brutality
Jim root your the greatest master of jazzs
There is something beautiful about busting out some badass metal on a gorgeous telecaster.
Happiest slipknot song 🐰🌸🎈🎉
I love jim root❤✌
Love Mr. Root!
This song has a lot of Pop punk riffs
Amazing
You all came here to hear Jim but ended up signing along anyway
7 people (so far) didn't like Jim's shoes
I thought only emo hipsters wore those shoes, guess hardcore metal heads do as well

Agreed. PRS lower end stuff is pretty good.
While PRS and other brands like that are great, there's really nothing wrong with Fender. If there was, Jim wouldn't be playing their guitars

Christian Miranda no none of the above
If it sounds good play it.. even if it only involves 3 strings
toca bem amigo
One great guitarist ?no two ways about it?just kills it?
This could almost be an anime intros music but left behind is my favorite iowa song it just sounds much heavier with the vocals
Who else couldn’t help but scream *_I KNOW_* when the verse hit?
Even though its “I’ve known”
Badass!!!

That tele would be much better with a wilkinson VS100
He looks just like the barber where I go to shave
His beard looked sic
I swear Jim is the one that plays the intro...
