  • Blair refuses to defect to the Borderworlds...and undergoes a long and troubling campaign against his one-time allies.
    A collection of cutscenes from the "Alternate Track" of Wing Commander IV positing a bit of a :"What if?" scenario. Also features edited gameplay with mixed-in music to tell the whole story as a hopefully cinematic presentation

    Can't say I've played this storyline very often, but it does have the advantage of a lot more screen time for John Spencer as Paulson and Robert Rusler as Seether. John Spencer is sadly no longer with us, but I got Robert Rusler to sign my copy of WC4 at ComicCon a few years ago - he's a super nice guy.

    I always loved how they bothered to shoot scenes depicting a negatively progressing story-branch. ^^ Same with the previous game and also games like Dark Forces 2. Before the age of cheaper in-game cutscenes took over and decreased the costs of full motion videos, this showed real commitment.

    I actually remember the first time I ever played this game I took the path, assuming it's what the game needed me to do. I figured at some point we'd figure out what was going on with them. I didn't feel good about it but in 1996 I couldn't fathom the idea of a game which would expect you to defect midway through from the side you'd been on for 4 games as part of the story.

    I played the PS1 version and wanted to see what the "Dark Side" ending was like...it ended with the destruction of the Lexington if you also killed the Intrepid no matter what else you did to defend the carrier...the Lex pretty much just did a spontaneous combustion. The game just ended at that point without the anything further, and certainly didn't show Blair as an admiral in that final scene. Always wondered what the PC dark path looked like as I thought it would have been longer. Guess it wasn't.
    Thanks for this!

    • @johnh9207
      @johnh9207 Год назад +3

      If the "dark side" ending is the one you're talking about with Blair as an admiral at the end, in the actual game it doesn't come from choosing not to defect. You have to defect either initially or in the Lexington-Intrepid battle when given the option to defect again. The "Blair is a ruthless admiral" ending is based on the decisions you make while with the BW.

    I loved both WC 3 & 4. Still own them. Have the 3DO port of 3 which was the definitive version. It's really sad that these movies on the games had better acting & character building than anything that has been coming out on real movies for the last 20 years. I remember being so disappointed in the Wing Commander the Movie when I went to see it in theater. Pretty much the only reason people went to see it was to catch the trailer for Star Wars Episode 1. History lesson folks. This was before the internet took over & that was the only way to see the trailer. Good times.

That would be absolutely laughable and a supreme example of bad writing. Already in the bad ending animation it is hinted at that rebellions are popping up. That's what ACTUALLY HAPPENS and that's what is "very much clear".

    I honestly can see why they couldn't have made it possible to destroy the Intrepid and return to an intact Lexington. -- They could have ended this story branch with this mission to keep it to the same number of discs.
    Here's what I would have done. After a debrief with Paulsen, all they'd need was a cutscene back in Tolwyn's office. Seether is also present, off to the side, stoic. -- Tolwyn smugly congratulations Blair on dealing with the traitorous defectors, his unwavering loyalty to Confed, etc etc. Tolwyn would then say a promotion to Admiral is on the table, and that Tolwyn will need someone to take his place as SRA Commander, once Tolwyn is appointed as Space Marshal. -- He'll end with "Once the council votes for war, I will need someone that will ensure that *the strong shall survive* ." Blair would respond it will be an honor. Tolwyn dismisses him.
    Once Blair has left, Tolwyn tells Seether. "Carry out your orders as I have instructed, and your promotion will be expedited." (Revealing that Tolwyn had actually been addressing Seether) Seether wordlessly acknowledges and coldly walks out of the room with intent. -- I might either have it fade to black, leaving Blair's fate ambiguous--or cut to the Senate Chamber with Tolwyn eulogizing Blair 'died a valiant hero in battle against Border World forces', before the vote for war.
    --That's one way they could have ended it. With the Intrepid destroyed, it essentially kills off Eisen and all other crew and pilot characters.

      Probably because they don't want to reward someone who'd watch 9:03 and on and think, "That's a side I want to stay on." I agree with that choice.

  • @Beckmen
    @Beckmen  9 лет назад +22

    I think the game kind of assumes you played Wing Commander III; and therefore have a level of loyalty to Eisen and Vagabond. That combined with the sketchiness of everything going on was probably supposed to be reason enough. I dunno, I forgot what I did did initially...probably not this as I don't think the PSX version of the game (which was the first one I played) lets you go on without defecting.
    Then again, I was pretty loyal to Hobbes and we all know how that turned out...so you never know.

    • @MrPeterpiper1969
      @MrPeterpiper1969 9 лет назад +3

      Hi Beckmen. It does let you go on to a point without defecting but then the pilot who turns out to be Genetically Enhanced tries to kill you. When you get to the BW ship you find out you killed Vagabond from Maniac and Eisen. Whichever way you go (defect or not) Vagabond dies. There's nothing you can do to save him. I actually played it both ways on PSX and got so annoyed I couldn't save him 'cos he was one of my favourite characters. Why they didn't use this awesome cast to make the WC movie is way beyond me though. This is a better film than the tragic thing that got released as one.
      I'd love to see this with updated graphics for the gameplay and combat sections on either PC or Xbox 360/One and PS4. Keep the video scenes because they were awesome, just update the CGI.

      @@MrPeterpiper1969 You didn't kill Vagabond, it was another random Confed pilot who did. Around 5:56 in this video, Paulsen gives Blair the "good news" that another group dispatched one of the defectors. While Blair is visibly shaken that one of his comrades is dead, Paulsen dismisses his question about who was killed, saying essentially "I dunno, one of the pilots".
      This is something else I love about WC. You may be the main character, but you're by no means the centre of the universe :) Lots of great things get done by unnamed people you never meet. Remember that Confed pilot Primate defected before Eisen, and you can fly with him off the Intrepid even though he's in 0 cutscenes.

    My first playthrough was this. I just couldn't see a reason to defect, and wanted to stay in the Navy instead of just going on the word of some person who said I had to defect... The game should have given you the evidence and let you make up your mind about it, not basically made that decision for you. If I real-world-ask myself what I would have done, I'd probably have obeyed orders and shot Eisen down, to be honest. I don't see any reason I'd behave differently in a game.

      I agree. What was needed was a tangible reason for Blair to defect. I always go with this story progression up until the very last choice before its game over if you stick with confed. It just seems more plausible and in-line with the character. I mean, Blair is no traitor and it is going to have to take a lot for him to turn his back on the stellar alliance which he has spent most of his life defending. Having us rely on suspiscions and hunches to make such a massive choice is kind of ridiculous, but meh.. its Hollywood.
