The Making of Wing Commander 3: Heart of The Tiger (60p)

  • This is the documentary by Adam Foshko that came on a VHS tape with special editions of Wing Commander 3 (the "filmcan" release). While this video is already on RUclips in various forms, this particular version was run through my videotape restoration process, which performs the following:
    - Removes most helical-scan tape head noise while retaining detail (without ringing)
    - Converts the original 30i interlaced material to 60p progressive material, enhanced using motion-directed analysis of each field
    This process is very CPU-intensive and converts footage at roughly 3 frames per second on a 3GHz 8-core system. Before and after image comparison: imgur.com/gzoAzm1
    While no conversion process can add detail where none exists, I am very confident in saying that my process is excellent at retaining the detail present in the original, and that this version is (as of 2015) the very best version available on RUclips. A good place to compare quality is during interview footage sections, such as at the 10-minute mark.
    If you'd like me to convert one of your videotapes, DVDs, or other 30i interlaced video footage with results similar to this video, drop me a line.

      We have the tech but not the heart in the right place. Only bussiness.

      @@RegScheepers If you can go and get them, I think they are available on GoG and in store -for sure- on Steam. Even now there's a small but great moddig Community that has graphics mods to boost the experience. But if you ask me the game it's fine as it Is!
      Belive me they are really unique experinces, please don't miss them out.
      I live in Argentina and I only got them by chance when I was a youngster and was browsing the game store. I said this cause back then it was really hard to get games in here, now with the digital stuff it's more Easy but you can't beat the old packaging of a manual, a cdrom all inside a big shiny box! Loved this, I played Wing Commander 3 on the 3DO and 4 on the PlayStation, I still remember everything about 3, all the missions ( The Behemoth anyone!? ), the characters ( Rachel - Ginger Lynn Allen 🔥), the story, the Kilrathi in particular Prince Thrakhath an enemy I have never forgotten, the ships my favourite being the T-38 Thunderbolt, basically everything, what a fantastic game it was and at 30 years old it's still better than modern crap today in my admittedly nostalgic opinion!

    Thank you for this, but "60p" means each frame has 60 vertical lines of pixels and is displayed as an entire frame (Progressive scan, as opposed to interlaced). I guess you were looking for "60 fps"

    Did you use QTGMC? I've used that for many of my recent videos, with excellent results. The motion smoothness is startling even when watching this at 30p, because we've become so used to most TV productions using "film look" 24 fps.

    • @JimLeonard
      @JimLeonard  8 лет назад

      +vwestlife QTGMC is indeed what I use for deinterlacing, although only for real-world footage. For synthetic footage like my CGA game captures, it falls over (even with the SourceMatch and Lossless options) so I SeparateFields and do it myself as the footage dictates.
      I love all framerates. What bugs me is when people take an obviously 30i/60p source (like video shot on videotape, newscast, live sporting event, etc.) and process/encode/upload at 30p or 24p. It gives me hives.

    • @vwestlife
      @vwestlife 8 лет назад

      Jim Leonard Deinterlacing late '90s sitcoms will give you nightmares. Many of them were shot at 24fps and then telecined and edited at 60i, so almost every time there's a scene change, it breaks the 2:3 pulldown cadence!

    • @JimLeonard
      @JimLeonard  8 лет назад

      That does not bother me. What really bothers me is when shows are shot in 24p and then add 30i effects, like outer limits (1995) or even some episodes of sttng. That's why I love the sttng blurays, they were completely remastered from the ground up from the original film elements and had brand new computer graphics generated for them.

      +Jim Leonard QTGMC, bringing even the latest CPUs to their knees. Could be a great benchmark test. Makes Crysis look fast in comparison:P
      CGA footage is technically 60p to begin with, best to just unweave it, or find a capture card that can do native 240p captures.
      Also, you may want to show folks the actual capture setup and explain the hardware used. Who doesn't like some hardware videos?

    Impressed at the quality of this video. Wish more people would give a crap about the quality of old stuff, mainly for the motion fluidity. I have a ratty-ass copy of the Press Your Luck pilot (and two ratty-ass copies of its predecessor Second Chance's third pilot), and I'd rather watch them than the 30fps crap floating around here.

    • @LocalAitch
      @LocalAitch 8 лет назад

      +Jim Leonard well, unfortunately the material in question has limited recovery potential as I received it already transferred to DVD, and the source VHS tapes were already very low quality multi-generational copies (as is common in the game show world). I'm the kind of guy who is more interested in the concepts and techniques at play as opposed to having someone else handle it. I'm sure you can appreciate that greatly :)

    • @LocalAitch
      @LocalAitch 8 лет назад

      There are also numerous timebase errors, especially on the PYL pilot. It would almost require an easy way to manually shift scanlines left and right for optimal recovery.

      +Robby Rob The noise reduction process can adapt if the media doesn't change, but sometimes I've had to cut the video up into pieces and filter each piece individually.
