Thank you so much! This is really helpful. I’m in Germany and the dealer has been useless on MercedesMe charge. I am fluent in German, but I don’t have the specialized vocabulary of technical terms about cars and reading legal German is enough to make your head explode even if you’ve lived here for decades. I really appreciate this.
Great video I was on holiday in France earlier this month and found on two occasions only my Mercedes Me Charge card worked on the charging posts. Debit Credit cards didn't work but Mercedes Charge did
Thanks for the video! Personally I use a mix of Mercedes Me Charge, IONITY passport and Tesla Supercharger. The combination of those three results in the cheapest way of travelling across the UK.
I live in a flat and can't charge from home, this has put me off considering a EV. Having to wait for the car to charge and the cost of the charge which could be more than my petrol car. Something really needs to be done for people who are unable to charge from home.
Yes there is an extra speed bump or extra challenges if you don’t have the ability to have a charger installed at home when it comes to EV’s. Have you spoken to the landowner? They might have thought about some plans for the future?
Nick..Brilliant video. I’m not a lover of electric vehicles however if I did have a Mercedes electric one it’s a no brainier to sign up for that. And how brilliant is it that it works out where they are on your route. Those Germans think of everything. 😂👍
85p per KWh is ridiculous, over 3 time the standard rate, It contributes to Rip-Off Britain - I've known workers who have opted into a company’s salary sacrifice scheme thinking it would be cheaper to lease a EV who do regular business mileage actually being out of pocket due to the extortionate prices at some EV stations and the rate they are allowed to claim back per mile for SS EV’s doesn’t cover their actual trip cost. There needs to be a price cap introduced. Ranting out of the way great intuitive video as usual Nick.
Future video on EV connectors please. My plug in GLC has a type 2 connector but most charging points seem to be CCS, and I have to go looking for a type 2
Thanks, Nick! Been watching your videos (very interesting and enjoyable to watch, good job!) since I've got a 2024 EQB 300 last month, here in Quebec. Since I've got this new, still on the free one year of connected services including Mercedes Me Charge. However, I canot find anywhere what the prices would be once the one year free is over. Also, hope they could add a offline mode for the intelligent navigation, I went in some areas without connections and all the added charge points were removed from the route. Edit: found the prices on the Mercedes Me Store!
Ah that’s it I was going to say head to the Mercedes me store / Mercedes me charge for pricing 🤓 That’s a good point, one thing I’ve not tested with the offline bit.
One additional comment, about the problems of public charging in the UK. Several CPO don't let other providers integrate their chargers into their services for roaming. Even ones which are publicly funded, such as Charge Place Scotland and others. But also private ones such as PodPoint, Tesla and others.
Thanks Nick. I have got my first Mercedes EQB 250+ last week. Your videos are really helping me out and making easy to understand how modern things work. I have one question ,when i have heating on, I am not able to get air to come through the back vents o middle vents in the front. Please direct me to video if you have already explained this.
Thank you! 🙏 Glad you enjoy them! This is a very common question, I am currently working on a video for this. So as soon as I’ve replied to all the comments for today, I’ll get back to editing the video again. Members for my channel will see the new video first but it’ll be a new video for everyone else soon! It’s due to the way physics works, Mercedes have designed it to be this way. When you use cold air, it’ll come out of the front vents like normal. But when you use warm or hot air the front centre vents will close. This is to ensure the heat is evenly distributed round the cabin as heat rises. So it’ll come out of the side, windscreen (to ensure de-misting) and most importantly the footwell. Then heat rises into the cold air and warms it up. If it came out of the front vents you’d get a pocket of warm air circulating around the top of the car which would be at your head. Make sure you watch the video when it’s done! It’ll explain it visually! 🤓🙏
Great video Nick! However, as an owner of an EQE SUV 500 in Greece, programming trips is not that easy. You see, that thing called "Electric intelligence" is not available in my country. As a result I have to program everything in advance, search which charging point I need to use and for how long. I'm afraid Mercedes' Intelligence is related to different countries and in Greece my Mercedes is not that...smart. I wish Mercedes, for the same car, would offer the same services everywhere, for the client that has already paid for having them.
Thank you! 🙏 Oh dang that would be good, hopefully they role it out in the future. I believe they only work with charge point providers that have a certain “green” charging criteria or something like that. I’m sure I remember reading something about that somewhen.
@@AbhilashAnil With Electric Intelligence unavailable, I have to search by provider and send the chagring point I consider best/quicker to my car as next destination.
Thanks, Nick. Very interesting. About 74,000 charging points in the UK. WOW!! In South Africa, I am not sure if we have even 74 !!!! It is useless here...
In South Africa we have quite a number of EV hybrid vehicles available, but not fully electric because no one can charge them anywhere. Pathetic here 😢😢😢
Saved the day Nick. I was sailing from Bilbao to Rosslare and it was going to be a rough sailing. The captain advised turning off the internal alarm and tow away function. But how do you do that, I know search Nicks videos, and there it was. Thanks.
All electric vehicles should use the same system that Tesla uses but for all charging networks, where it's just plug and pay with an electronic handshake from the vehicle to the charger and you get charged for what you need. Everything needs to be simplified and standardised right across the entire charging network in every country. Manufacturers need to get together, decide between them what is the best way and then implement it quickly.
I think they’ve been working on it, I’ve heard of some cars now having plug and charge (if I’m honest it should have been like this from day one) but hey baby steps, we’re heading in the right direction anyway! Have you got an EV at the moment?
Hi Nick Helpful review as always. I’ve had a GLA PHEV for nearly 4 years. In that time I have managed all my recharging at home because it’s the cheapest and most convenient option. I’m considering switching to a GLE next time but I feel things get more complicated and less flexible even with Mercedes ME. Added to which, it seems using ME requires me to predict my annual usage in advance when I sign up in order to get the best rate when charging - am I right? Difficult, as my aim would be to still home charge as much as possible. So, when on my less frequent longer journeys requiring remote charging, I’m likely to still be paying a higher rate negating the 'supposed' costs of running an EV. That for me, with the annual road tax, makes the move to a full EV highly questionable.
The different prices for Ad-Hoc charging (via credit card at the actual charging station) and with an app are a result of regulations in regards of roaming (at least in the EU). The prices a CPO (charge point operator) charges for Ad-Hoc charging is also the one he can demand from other providers for roaming So meaning if the CPO charges 85p per kWh for Ad-Hoc, Mercedes will also have to pay that if somebody uses Mercedes Me Charge at that charging station. The customer whoever will also pay according to the tariffs you've shown, meaning Mercedes pays the difference. The CPO's however want the drivers to use their own app, therefore offering cheaper prices in their apps. I suppose that the UK has similar regulations, since it is exactly the same problem like in the EU.
Hmmm interesting, if Mercedes pay the difference, how on earth do they make money. But on thing I will say I really dislike how expensive DC Public Chargers are. Compare that with actual electricity at home it’s so expensive!
@@npoleary Well, the Charge L and Charge M tariff cost a monthly fee. So I guess this should cover the cost for Mercedes-Benz. There might be similar effects like with gym membership, where people just keep there Me Charge subscription for convenience and not utilising it in the way that it actually pays for itself. The free try-out period is probably considered a marketing expense for their vehicle and the Me Charge service. You can see the actual prices with the Charge S tariff (if you have an account that is). That should be pretty much give you the actual prices MB has to pay, because in that tariff they just pass it on to you.
Tesla own their own charging network so you can on some chargers but you’ll need to use their app. Once you’ve downloaded their app just tap “Find a Charger” and search from there 🤓 Just bear in mind this won’t work through the car’s screen you’ll need to use the Tesla app for that.
It can save you money, but also cost money. The inevitable network for long distance of Ionity is cheaper when you buy direct from them. Prices via Mercedes Me are shameless expensive.
Have you seen examples of IONITY being more expensive? IONITY is part of Mercedes me Charge so should fall under the DC charging rates which should be cheaper.
Haha no I wish! 🤓 I’d love to run an EV! 👍🏼 This video was actually recorded back when I had the EQA (when I did the EQA review). Mercedes very kindly let me use it for a little longer so I could make a couple of extra videos on it. It went back though so back in my A-Class 🤓
Mercedes rip off. Tesla is so much easier and cheaper still. Cheaper electric cheaper to buy cheaper to maintain and a lot more reliable. My Mercedes glc I returned back as it was terrible. Went to the dealership around 20 times on 12 months.
I’ve reviewed a couple of Tesla’s now for an extended period of time and their cars are very good and their infrastructure that goes with their cars is also very good. One of the reasons why I would recommend a Tesla for a first EV especially for someone who’s never had one before. There can be various reasons why someone might not want to go for Tesla though, similar looking cars, one screen interface, no head up display, no CarPlay (although their software makes up for that), or the owner behind Tesla (yes some people seriously won’t buy because of him). But all in all, as with all cars they have their pros and cons. I actually have huge respect for Tesla, they make great cars, have a look at the reviews I’ve produced on my channel of them 🤓 But some might want their next EV to be a German car or more specifically a Mercedes. Mercedes me charge does a great job at making almost like a Tesla Supercharger network (or as close to as possible) with integration through the app and the multimedia system. Sorry to hear about your car, I’ve been there before and had a car (non Mercedes) that went back more times to the dealer than I actually used it. It was rejected in the end, it is frustrating to say the least and I get it, it can put you off a brand. But I’ll assure you, they are not all like that. I guess you have a Tesla at the moment? Which one? 🤓
@ yes I bought a brand new glc e at over £70k and it was nothing but trouble and got rejected. MB support was terrible too and I wrote to the CE of MB in Germany to get it resolved. MB UK kept delaying and were very resistant. I bought a Tesla Y performance and albeit being 4 months old it is more reliable, cheaper to buy, so easy to charge through their super charger network and their electric prices are about half the price. It’s a no brainer to be honest. Cheaper and better. The big doors a bit like Apple their cars are specifically designed to be electric, their parts are all integrated as is their support network. They don’t rely on lots of sub contractors and external suppliers. This is why they are more successful than MB, who I see are now loosing money big style. I wonder why!
Ooo a Tesla Model Y Performance, I’ve driven a Tesla Performance car before, they are brutally fast. So quick! Glad you found something in the end though! So now that you’ve been in an EV, would you ever switch back to petrol / diesel (brand aside).
@@npoleary you should never say never and keep an open mind but so far it’s working well. In the main I charge at home but I do a fair bit of travelling and the Tesla superchargers together with the infrastructure is excellent. Always found a charger no range anxiety yet and it’s cheaper and more reliable. To my astonishment ever the car insurance was cheaper than my MB with the same insurer on the same terms. Oh and the car is made in Germany.
One of the reasons why I decided to cover similar cars to Mercedes and branch out slightly. And Tesla’s offers for a Model Y over the last few months were crazy cheap.
