Just three or four days ago I was sitting in my car for 20 minutes on the phone before I started my trip. But when I tried to start the car it kept saying "Key not detected" I panicked for a few minutes in the car before I got out to see if I dropped the FOB. When I got back in it started right up. Thanks Mr Rick! Yes I’ve definitely done that before 😅 Leaving the key in a car, filming…and the ignition wouldn’t turn on after I guess 20 mins. As soon as I moved the key, it worked after pressing the button 🤓
The HOLD function is the single most helpful piece of kit fitted to a modern car. In conjunction with an automatic gearbox it makes congested traffic driving (when aren’t we in congested traffic…) almost enjoyable and far less of a pedal shuffle and general encroaching tiredness when in a jam. I probably wouldn’t buy another car that didn’t have it fitted as standard. That’s me geared into Mercedes for the next 20 years 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I've liked having the hold feature on my current (and previous three) Mercedes (oldest of them being a 2009 car). I wish they'd adopt what Audi (and I think BMW also) are now doing - "automatic hold". They don't need that extra sharp/firm brake pedal press. If you brake all the way to a complete stop, hold is automatically applied. Mercedes led the way with hold, but have now been overtaken.
@@andrewcarruthers6934 That is a very good use-case for the hold feature. But generally it's just so that you don't need to keep your foot on the brake for the entire time you're waiting until you can go again (e.g. traffic lights, junctions).
@@andrewcarruthers6934 I don't think it does avoid dazzling a driver behind - the brake lights are still on. I switched active lane assist off. Active lane assist almost goty me rear ended by a semi truck. I was half indicating left ( I half indicated because there was a good 200 meters before my left turn onto my street) to get onto the bus lane (in Gold Coast, Australia) to turn left onto my street. The bus lane has a solid white line, I half indicated and by the time I got close to the white line, the indicator switched off and the active lane assist kicked in and slowed the car down to move my car right. The semi truck locked up, and i slammed on the accelerator. Luckily no crash.

another very informative video Nick, thank you, A complete revelation about the 30yrs free Mercedes breakdown cover if car is always serviced by the manufacturer... 👍
Hey Andrew, well it depends on the situation at the time to be honest. Roadside Assistance and Breakdown Teams always try to get to everyone as quickly as possible. I have heard only good things from them as it’s support by the RAC in the UK.
Thanks Nick - another great video. I’d never heard of the “Hold” feature before (or the 30 year breakdown) and I’ve owned quite a few Mercedes over the years !! - what is the advantage of HOLD over pressing the “right stick” end button?…..I’ll experiment with it this weekend - Cheers - Peter.
@@npoleary - thanks so much Nick, I’ve been experimenting with it this morning (what a revelation!!) …..and controlling the volume of my satnav!! - your Tips are so incredibly useful - Thanks mate :- )
Active lane assist, Jolt is a light word for one it does. For me it slams on and it’s nearly caused me to crash a couple of times now. I turn it off every time I get in the car now.
Thanks James! It depends where you’re based round the world! (Sorry hard to tell in the comments!) In the UK yes, but elsewhere you’ll have to check with your local Mercedes 👍🏼
Hi Nick, appreciate your videos, thanks. I have an EQE300 and an EQA250. I would like to see what the brake light does when using various forms of regenerative braking. For example, with one pedal driving it is not necessary to touch the brake pedal at all, but the person dring behind must get some warning that you are slowing down and stopping. Could you set up a camera to show the brake light when you drive around in various scenarios? TIA Brian in Australia
I tested this a while ago but not on camera 🤓 Brake recuperation varies from car to car as you know from EQA to EQE, they use different names if I remember. So EQA brake lights D+ = No D = No D - = Yes D - - = Yes For EQE, it’s been a while since I drove that one but pretty sure it had No Recuperation = No Normal = No Strong = Yes Hope that helps! I’m sure that’s what it was!
As far as I’ve seen, #4 Active Lane Keeping Assist only works for solid white lines. You get a slight vibration on dashed lines but no active assist unless you have the Driver Assistance package?
Hey Sham, that’s right 🤓 Rumble for dashed lines (but if a car is coming the other way the car could take action if you have the driving assistance package) If it’s a white solid line then yes it’ll do that more often Of course using indicators switches it off instantly 🤓
Thanks for the video suggestion! However sadly I only started my channel in 2020 so have limited coverage on models prior to that. Do you know if you have the adaptive lights? I can let you know how to check if you’re not sure 🤓
Highly appreciate all your videos Nick! Thank you! ☺️ I’m struggling with understanding the How, When, What etc of the brake recuperation, maybe an idea for a future video?
@@npoleary Got my C63 from Hendy Sports just up the road, I am finding your tips & tricks most interesting, not sure how much applies to a 4 year old car though, still - I am going out to play with it later
You should have included the model years and what country (if thete ste differences) for the features that you were talkin about. You made it sound like if I had a 1995 Mercedes it would havethese features you're referring to
Hey Mona, most of the Mercedes I have ever experienced are roughly from 2014 and onwards so all my videos are based on Mercedes models after this year. However some videos though do go back further than this maybe stretching to 2011/2012/2013 with things like the HOLD feature I showed off in one of my very first tips & tricks video.
Verry nice and usefull gadgets , thats for shure . But I hope the most attention has gone to the engines and gearboxes so that 500K kilometer is no problem , like it was in the " stoneage " ! 😂😂😂😂😂
Great video as usual Nick. One question.....How can I tell if I have the Active Brake Assist? I get the red triangle, and the beeping, as you mention. Little reluctant to try and drive into another car though. 😆
Ah, your local dealership will most likely be able to confirm exactly but from memory the CLA’s from 2018 had Adaptive Brake Assist which can assist you with braking but will not brake autonomously. Hope that helps clear it up!
@@npoleary Does that mean you have to react first? Really great videos by the way. I still haven’t tried out active parking assist and have watched your video on that three or four times but I still haven’t ever had the parking assist message come up. You’ve given me particular confidence now to have mine serviced at a Mercedes dealership so thank you for that good advice too. I can’t believe I was ‘persuaded ‘ by the car dealership I bought mine from to buy a three year warranty 🙄
Hey Sharon, it depends on the model to be honest! If the wording on spec sheets says “Active Brake Assist” then it’ll brake autonomously in the event of an impending collision. Any other wording like “Collision Prevention Assist” will require user interaction.
Hi Nick I'm off to Italy in a couple of days on a road trip. I have a SLC 43 how do I alter the headlights to drive on the Right hand side of the road, or do they change automatically as the car has intelligent lighting. hope you can help many thanks Chris
Hey Chris, very nice! Sounds like an awesome road trip! As long as you have Intelligent Light System you’ll need to change it on the steering wheel. I think I can remember roughly how to do it however I know it’s done on the steering wheel. Use the left and right arrows to go all the way across to SETTINGS LIGHTS Then change one of the menus in here from LEFT SIDE TRAFFIC to RIGHT SIDE TRAFFIC Hope that helps! 😎
@@npoleary Hi Nick that worked thank you so much. Yes really looking forward to the trip to Italy going through 7 different countries and of course the Swiss Alps. Thanks again Chris 👍
Great video. I have a question: i don't quite understand the climate controls. I'm seeing different labels with different car manufacturers. What actually do these do: "front MAX", "AC MAX"? Perhaps make a video on the topic? 🤷🏻♂️ thanks, again, for the great content. :) have a great day, -big fan
Hey Larry, thank you! It actually depends yes on the manufacturer and the country! For example in the UK, the max buttons (there are two of them) are for demisting either the front or the rear as quickly as possible. However another example in Florida in the USA, some cars have a MAX COOL button (because their country is significantly hotter) Depends on loads of things, but here in the UK it’s for demisting / deicing as quickly as possible.
@@npoleary oooooh, finally I understand that line among the many in the detailed car specifications where it says “for cold regions” or something like that
Hi Nick. Isn’t it better to switch off “creep mode” on an EQ? Then the vehicle always stops when you take your foot off the throttle and you never have to use the breaks.
User preference! I noticed that when I was checking it out. I decided not to include in the review as I wanted to keep it as simple as possible but pretty cool you can do it 🤓
lane keeping assist, the way MB has implemented it is very bad. BMW has it such that it can be set from active to passive, but MB is only active. I had to suddenly maneuver around an obstacle on the road, and the lane assist steered me right into a collision course. I had to yank the steering to avoid the object, otherwise there would have been substantial damage. In my X5 I would have the passive mode on, which makes a sound and vibrates the steering wheel but does not take over. Another ergo fail is the Mercedes me call button overhead. it is situated immediately behind the sunroof button. So when you try to open the sunroof, if you happen to keep your eyes on the road, it is very likely you will hit the call button while moving your fingers to the sunroof switch. And by the way, the newest dashboard looks cheap and flat and very boring. that is the result of being cheap and using only one display across the dashboard.
Which model are you referring to? Active Lane Jeeping Assist came out in 2018 and yes I would describe it as a “jolt” as it braked one side of the car. You systems are much smoother, so depends on the year of car and tech within 🤓
I just bought a pre-owned 2015 E350 and I don't know how to open the doors from the outside without clicking the key fob. Isn't there a way to just walk up to the door and grab the door handle and open the car?
Another great video...really useful. I was astonished you get 30 years breakdown cover with merc if it's serviced through merc. This was never told to me and I've owned 2 merc cars now.
Great video as usual Nick. Can you advise if my new EQC Premium Plus has a headlight washer and if so how does it work? It’s my first ever Mercedes. Thanks :)
Hey J P! Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video! No most cars now feature LED lights, so just like your EQC it doesn’t need them. Bi-Xenon lights use to feature them but LED’s are much brighter and can shine through dirt with a higher luminance value so they don’t need to have headlight washers.
Really sorry I wouldn’t know! Sat Nav’s are standard here in the UK from my review of the GLB so you’ll have to chat to Mercedes themselves, they’ll be able to let you know if it’s possible.
Hey NVR, sadly it’s a factory fitted option so if a car doesn’t have it, you wouldn’t be able to fit it unless you went for a 3rd party option (as far as I know anyway)
Active Brake Assist is available from approx 19mph and some new cars even have close range braking which can do it under that speed too! Always on by default with or without cruise control
I am picking up my new GLC this month going to France in October my car is a premium but only has adaptive high beam assist i cant find anywhere can i change my head light settings for EU driving
Hey Raymond, if your car needs adjustment, you can see in the light section if your settings menu on the centre screen. Press: HOME SETTINGS LIGHTS DIPPED BEAMS And if you car needs adjustment then you can change this in here 👍🏼
Hey Abdullah, if you have a Plug-in Hybrid or All Electric then you can do a remote start for heating / cooling the interior as they have an auxiliary heater. Sadly if it’s petrol or diesel, then you won’t be able to. Although I have heard this varies round the world!
Hi Nick great video again, I’m learning so much about my new Mercedes’ from your videos excellent, could you tell me if there is a way to stop the headlight coming on so early on the Auto mode, I know it’s probably for safety but it seem so early in the afternoon for them to come on thanks cheers

I didn’t know a few of those so thanks. I’d love to try the active brake assist on my E300de but of course I can’t!
Haha no worries Simon! Oh no 🙈
Please don’t try it, I have done it before on a closed track and can confirm it works!
If I ever get the chance to “test” I’ll do a video on it!
Of course with the proper safety precautions in place!
another very informative video Nick, thank you, A complete revelation about the 30yrs free Mercedes breakdown cover if car is always serviced by the manufacturer... 👍
I am afraid they completely failed to respond when I called them very poor
Thanks C A Grice! Glad you enjoyed it! 🤓
Hey Andrew, well it depends on the situation at the time to be honest. Roadside Assistance and Breakdown Teams always try to get to everyone as quickly as possible.
I have heard only good things from them as it’s support by the RAC in the UK.
@@npoleary thanks that’s reassuring but when I called several times there was no response
Oh really? How strange!
Did you use the button in the car or the tel number? 0080097777777
Great video as always, and even if I consider myself an old time MB user, some things I did not know about👍
Wooo! Thanks Kristian! Glad you enjoyed this week’s video! 🤓
No problem Peter 🤓
Use the HOLD mode for in traffic but when you actually park to get out, use the button on the end of the stalk for that one 🤓
@@npoleary - thanks so much Nick, I’ve been experimenting with it this morning (what a revelation!!) …..and controlling the volume of my satnav!! - your Tips are so incredibly useful - Thanks mate :- )
Brilliant thanks
Active lane assist, Jolt is a light word for one it does. For me it slams on and it’s nearly caused me to crash a couple of times now. I turn it off every time I get in the car now.
Amazing vdo. Thank you.
Thank you! 🤓 glad you enjoyed it!
Hi thanks for posting this video. Has the c200d got a speed limiter (cruise control) thanks
Thanks James! It depends where you’re based round the world! (Sorry hard to tell in the comments!)
In the UK yes, but elsewhere you’ll have to check with your local Mercedes 👍🏼
when u say your Mercedes make sure you cover things for all Mercedes vehicles, not just virtually all or some types
The Mercedes Me service is $800 per year in the US.
I tested this a while ago but not on camera 🤓
Brake recuperation varies from car to car as you know from EQA to EQE, they use different names if I remember.
So EQA brake lights
D+ = No
D = No
D - = Yes
D - - = Yes
For EQE, it’s been a while since I drove that one but pretty sure it had
No Recuperation = No
Normal = No
Strong = Yes
Hope that helps! I’m sure that’s what it was!
As far as I’ve seen, #4 Active Lane Keeping Assist only works for solid white lines. You get a slight vibration on dashed lines but no active assist unless you have the Driver Assistance package?
Hey Sham, that’s right 🤓
Rumble for dashed lines (but if a car is coming the other way the car could take action if you have the driving assistance package)
If it’s a white solid line then yes it’ll do that more often
Of course using indicators switches it off instantly 🤓
Can you show us how to use the Auto Full Headlight on C350e model.
Thanks for the video suggestion! However sadly I only started my channel in 2020 so have limited coverage on models prior to that.
Do you know if you have the adaptive lights? I can let you know how to check if you’re not sure 🤓
Highly appreciate all your videos Nick! Thank you! ☺️
I’m struggling with understanding the How, When, What etc of the brake recuperation, maybe an idea for a future video?
Hey Ann, absolutely I’ll defo make a video of it in the future!
Hi Nick can you tell me if the gla200 2024 petrol has a 2l engine. PS great work you do.
Literally just reviewed it on my channel 🤓
It was the last video posted! 😛
pls how to solve e class 230 '' longer stopping distance start engine ''
You appear to be in Poole there Nick, Sandown is my local Merc dealer (I didnt buy my Merc from them :) )
Absolutely! 🤓
It’s only thanks to them for allowing me access to film the content! Would be tricky to do without them!
🙏
@@npoleary Got my C63 from Hendy Sports just up the road, I am finding your tips & tricks most interesting, not sure how much applies to a 4 year old car though, still - I am going out to play with it later
Ah most of them will! Most videos on here are for cars 2014 and newer so there should be a few! 😎
I think Active Break Assist and Autonomous Brake are two different things. Active Brake Assist only reduces the speed and won't stop the car
Verry nice and usefull gadgets , thats for shure .
But I hope the most attention has gone to the engines and gearboxes so that 500K kilometer is no problem , like it was in the " stoneage " ! 😂😂😂😂😂
thanks
Great video Nick, once again. Is the MBUX Hyperscreen already available in the S Class, I look forward for a review,!
Hey Temponauta,
Thank you! No sadly MBUX Hyperscreen is rumoured to be launching later next year but yes of course I’ll cover that!
Great video as usual Nick.
One question.....How can I tell if I have the Active Brake Assist?
I get the red triangle, and the beeping, as you mention. Little reluctant to try and drive into another car though. 😆
Hey David, which model do you have and what year? 🤓
@@npoleary It's the CLA AMG Line 2018
Use the left and right arrows to go all the way across to
SETTINGS
LIGHTS
Then change one of the menus in here from LEFT SIDE TRAFFIC to RIGHT SIDE TRAFFIC
Hope that helps! 😎
@@npoleary Hi Nick that worked thank you so much. Yes really looking forward to the trip to Italy going through 7 different countries and of course the Swiss Alps. Thanks again Chris 👍
i love your videos . awesome
However another example in Florida in the USA, some cars have a MAX COOL button (because their country is significantly hotter)
Depends on loads of things, but here in the UK it’s for demisting / deicing as quickly as possible.
I decided not to include in the review as I wanted to keep it as simple as possible but pretty cool you can do it 🤓
Thank you Nick. Maybe it’s a good idea to make a dedicated video about this. Even my Mercedes dealer didn’t know about this function.
Yeah absolutely, if I get access to an EV again from the future in Mercedes I might be able to! 🤓
How do you use the button that is on dash showing sliding motion
Sliding motion? Not sure what you mean by that one, where abouts is it?
lane keeping assist, the way MB has implemented it is very bad.
It depends if it has Keyless-Go
Keyless Go in Mercedes is when you put your hand behind the handle and it unlocks automatically
The main thing I didn't know about my Mercedes is that I have one....which I don't.
Another great video...really useful. I was astonished you get 30 years breakdown cover with merc if it's serviced through merc. This was never told to me and I've owned 2 merc cars now.
Thank you! 🤓
I know! Top Secret Mercedes stuff! 😅
Does active brake assist works in foggy conditions and in extremely low light conditions
Honestly never tried it, I believe it uses a radar system in the bumper so it should do!
Obviously don’t try it out as it is just a safety system 🤓👍🏼
Can I add Navigation to a 2022 GLB 250? It has the button and located on screen but it is not loaded.
Really sorry I wouldn’t know! Sat Nav’s are standard here in the UK from my review of the GLB so you’ll have to chat to Mercedes themselves, they’ll be able to let you know if it’s possible.
I have Mercedes a class amg line 2019 but i dont have ambient light feature. Can you please suggest me how to do that
Hey NVR, sadly it’s a factory fitted option so if a car doesn’t have it, you wouldn’t be able to fit it unless you went for a 3rd party option (as far as I know anyway)
Is active brake assit available in manual driving mode or is it only when you are in cruise mode
Active Brake Assist is available from approx 19mph and some new cars even have close range braking which can do it under that speed too!
Always on by default with or without cruise control
Active brake assist is incredibly dangerous. It’s caught me out twice slapping the brakes on for no reason. I have de activated it.
I am picking up my new GLC this month going to France in October my car is a premium but only has adaptive high beam assist i cant find anywhere can i change my head light settings for EU driving
Hey Raymond, if your car needs adjustment, you can see in the light section if your settings menu on the centre screen.
Press:
HOME
SETTINGS
LIGHTS
DIPPED BEAMS
And if you car needs adjustment then you can change this in here 👍🏼
Hi how do i check if i have remote start? I cant see option on Mercedesme app
Hey BillM, thank you! No sadly that can’t be adjusted, just comes on early for safety 🤓
wow! nick if you had to make another RUclips channel not about Mercedes, what type of videos would you make?
That’s an interesting question Josh!
Well I’m a lover of cars and technology so something in between?
A tech channel would be pretty cool!
