SEE UPDATE #3 for latest information on RMA!
So I've had my Intel i9 14900KS CPU since the original launch date of 03/14/24, which I purchased brand new from Newegg.com retail online. So after about 4 months of usage, I started to notice stability issues with my system, starting with just simply installing an Nvidia driver update. I would get constant failures of the driver install process. Usually, after the 3rd or more attempt, it would install successfully. I didn't think much of it, and maybe I thought it was a fault my OS install.
    ******************************
    Update 2:
Intel did infact tell me that my chip wasn't as damaged as I had originally thought, but there are still honoring my RMA for my troubles Once the CPU gets back to me, I'll be making a new video clarifying the details on my CPU problem. It turns out I just was expecting more from it , and it couldn't keep up the overclock settings I was using. Video will be up soon enough to shut down all those people telling me, "destroyed my chip." Well, in fact, Intel confirmed through their testing that it is actually operating as intended.
    *********************************
Update #3 Intel approved my RMA and have sent me back a brand new sealed i9 14900KS CPU. SOLD!
In my conversation, with the Intel engineer I spoke with he did mention to me that my CPU was in fact, fine and 100% fully operational and functioning as intended. However, due to my prior loyalty with the company with a long history of registered Intel CPU's dating back over a decade now, that still did in fact honor the RMA and sent me a replacement as mentioned, which is going to be sold immediately. Link to video: • Intel i9 14900KS RMA R...
So that concludes the story, my CPU was fine, and I guess I was over paranoid and just simply clocking the CPU with not enough voltage, and too high of a MHZ clock speed and power levels for it to remain stable during shader compilation. Less learned, but big thank you Intel, and Miguel. The whole process from beginning to end took about 8 business days in total. CPU has been sold!
And if you are running an intel 13th or 14th generation CPU, you can submit a support request at the Intel website here: supporttickets...
It took them about 4 business days to reply to my RMA request. I also wanted to add that, to speed up your RMA request, take photos of the top of the IHS of the CPU, as well as the bottom with resistors. They will ask for these photos as they want to make sure there is no physical damage to the CPU. So it is very helpful to do that when first submitting your request, which is what I did. There is also an option to do a cross shipment, but only in the USA and Canada.
And a little more back story: the only reason I stuck with Intel is because I've had this Z690 motherboard for the past 2 Intel generations, and it was a less costly upgrade to stay with Intel. Also, I've been running the thermal grizzly contact frame for the past 2 Intel generations. I was on AMD prior to ZEN 4's release, and the initial plan was to go to AMD when ZEN5 X3D chips came. And I decided on ordering a complete new AMD 7950X3D, and will eventually sell the new unused replacement CPU Intel sends me.
And the last final important note is the chip is already on its way back to Intel, so I can not make any further adjustments to my system, but I greatly appreciate everyone help in trying to possibly remedy the situation.
My full system system specs of the Intel system are posted below: (no longer using it anymore as I went AMD X3D

I tried that combo 2 times. And it did not run stable with EXPO on. 1th died very fast with on 5600mhz ram and the 2nd got very unstable not able to do tasks. Maybe a bad batch or mem issues. But trying to say AMD has none...it's the reason i went with the I7-14700KF because 2 complete returns were more then enough to try imo.
Mem was AMD verified Corsair. It should work, but it did not. Also getting a boot screen with EXPO on took 30 to 40 seconds most of the times and without it was a minimum of over 20 seconds to get a screen.
I wanted to buy it because it uses so less power with gaming. But those 2 chips and a MSI Tomahawk B650 board did not run stable. My I7-14700KF stable since day one. Undervolted 0.06v and no issues what so ever since launch end november 23.

"Hi, having defective hardware after paying the price is always a pain. I've had a 13900KS for 3 months now. I didn't buy the 14th generation CPU because I had read numerous reports about crashes and CPU degradation. When I got my 13900KS, I was hitting temperatures between 85 and 100°C in games like HELLDIVERS 2, even though my BIOS settings were on default. After many days of testing, I reduced the ICCMax to 280, and the PL1 and PL2 values to 280 as well. My scores are almost identical with much less heat. I also reduced the voltage of each core by 0.50000. It's just massive, and the only conclusion I could draw is that the CPUs are completely overvolted. Have you tried simply disabling cores to see if there's a specific one that's damaged? With my modifications, I'm running between 65°-75°C with rare spikes between 85°-92°C. It could be that your CPU is actually fine, but the surrounding hardware couldn't handle the heat. That's why 100°C for a CPU is completely unacceptable."

As you already started the RMA, can you please share your AC/DC Loadline settings?
From your settings, having a fixed voltage of 1.370V is not good as that voltage also applies when the CPU is idle. Ideally you would want low voltages when the CPU is not under heavy use. As you are using the extreme profile with PL1=PL2=330W at 400A, you CPU will run at higher clocks under load but that also means that will require more voltage to be stable at those clocks. The fixed voltage of 1.370V might be causing the crashes as it's not enough for the clock speed the CPU is trying to achieve with PL1=PL2=320W at 400A. Keep in mind that if you are using the MSI Watercooler Profile, by default it will undervolt your CPU with Lite Load mode 9 wich is AC/DC LL 50/80 and will have IA CEP disabled if that is in place it's probably that your crashes are due to undervolting.
Before you return your CPU, if you want to keep the PL1=PL2=320W at 400A, check your AC/DC LL and increment it a bit to reduce the undervolting and disable the fixed voltage (leave it as auto) and see if the game crashes when compiling shaders. If gets stable with the new loadlines you can apply a CPU Core Voltage as Adaptive + Offset or reduce the AC/DC LL to find a sweet spot for the undervolt.
In the end, if you want to keep high clocks at PL1=PL2=320W at 400A, your CPU needs more voltage to be stable. On the other side, if you want to have CPU voltage below 1.370V, you can reduce the PL1/PL2 and see if the CPU is still crashing at load.

      @LousWRX  Месяц назад +1

I appreciate the help and detailed information. At idle, my CPU voltage would usually drop down to like 0.850 or something when when it would down clock in speeds, so it definitely didn't maintain 1.372 at idle. I've had my LLC set to level 3 since owning the CPU. If I keep my CPU voltage at auto, it would send up 1.5V to the CPU, and also, it wasn't stable at all with auto voltage, which is why I set it at 1.372.
I do greatly appreciate the detailed and informative response as well, but I think I'm just going to send this one back, sell the replacement chip, and just go AMD X3D.

If it was made for that Intel would have put that on the spec sheet as a base frequency but they didn't because even they know the cpu can't run that all the time. @@danielwagner6290 Well, I was mistaken by Intels promotional materials of this chip. When I saw them advertise 5.9 Ghz out the box boost clocks, I didn't realize that pertained to 3 or 4 performance cores only. So when I first installed my chip at all factory defaults Intel setting and started up a game, I saw my CPU clocks maintaining 5,876 MHZ in all games, so because of that misinterpretation I assumed that was the chip boosting All-Core to 5876 Ghz, but it was in fact only a select number of performance cores.
And 2ndly, I mistakenly took the advice of the Framechasers RUclips channel to lock all cores to 5.9 Ghz if you own an i9 14900KS CPU to avoid the 6.2 Ghz single core boost speed. So, just clarify a little bit more. It was only just recently that I set that 59 ratio after seeing his recent video, so it hasn't been that way for the entire ownership of the CPU.
I should also mention had set a TJ MAX threshold of 87C, so realistically in gaming load, which is all I use is my PC, for it probably isn't even really being pushed all that far as game typically utilize between 10-17% in games. And lastly, out of my past 24 years of building computers, this is the first I'm I've ever had a computer component fail, ever. Heck, I still own a secondary old built computer with a working i5 core 2 duo e4300, and also a q6600 quad core, still working to this very day. I've never had a history of burning up chips until this recent fiasco of Intel in some ways advertising they're chips of doing more than they really are capable of doing. It was a simple misinterpretation.

That was actually fine with me but since I downloaded the latest Bios with the new microcode it will now run 2 cores at 6.2 and the rest at 6.0. E cores are all at 4.5 with no crashes. Voltage is a 1.425. Cenebench score is just over 39,000 something. The new microcode is doing a better job at controlling the boost algorithm. 1.37 v is way too much of voltage to pump in consistently into cpu.
The process of degradation was sped up cause the voltage was pumped into it.. unless it was cooled by MORA, wouldn't do this..plus considering the mobbo wasn't top tier and don't know what LLC was used there is a high chance mobbo would droop a bit more than 1.37v .

But if you have an adequate AIO, it should be fine under gaming loads and other medium mixed loads, like maybe rendering a video.

Hi, I really wanted to get in touch with somebody with this problem. I am not a full tech enthusiast with a high end desktop, but definitely a tech geek.
I really wanted this information from someone. As for you, has Windows ever BSOD'd on you? If so, I really do want to see the memory dump and the error code.
If your processor has degraded a lot and is not even running correctly at stock settings, increasing the voltage further will help, but I can't say if it will degrade further or not. One thing better you can do is to lower the clock speed as it will almost definitely increase the stability. If I were you, I would even go deeper and see if only any cores are affected and if so, I would either lower their clock speed and keep others at high, or maybe increase its voltage but again, that might cook it even faster. Also, disabling C states will also increase stability.
As for your new processor, I think you can go and and safely use it right now, but I would really recommend to undervolt as much as possible, and maybe still lower the power limits (320 for 14900KS is still a lot). If the voltages and power remain low, then it will greatly increase its lifespan. Lowering the clock speed by a bit will also definitely help, especially if the voltages remain low, or maybe if the clock speed out of the box is just too high.
I am on a laptop with a similarly degraded core, but its a Kaby Lake processor. I have done so much tinkering to get this running, but the firmware just won't allow me access to voltages or turbo ratio limits. I use Linux and either just disable that core, or run the whole processor at lower frequency. That is why I am so eager to get in touch with someone with this problem. I hope you reply.

If so, I would definitely recommend to wait until Ryzen 9000. Even after that though, you can still run your new processor with lower voltages and power limits and it should run fine, according to my tech knowledge. A PL2 of 270 watts should be safe, but I don't know all about the knobs in your firmware and so see if you can specifically reduce the power draw of the P cores because I think the E cores do just fine at stock. And definitely undervolt as much as you can. Make sure cooling is also proper as that also affects voltages. On your degraded processor, you really could have tried just lowering the P core clock speed by just a couple hundred MHz, it could have just worked fine, because I have seen people do this and it just worked, but yeah of course RMA is always better.

I did a cross ship of my 13900K in May and the $630+ refund on my Discover card took weeks because they claimed it never arrived. I mean... You consistently pumped 1.37 V into your CPU and do not have a top tier motherboard and your CPU degraded... Cannot say i am surprised lol.
I have 13900KS for past 2 years now, never power limited, do not have intentions of upgrading BIOS to limit its performance but since day 1 i am running - 0.05V and light LLC so i dont have big jumps / difference in Voltages, always disabled that thermal nonsense and left the CPU to run on normal / stock frequencies.
My CPU only gets close to 1.37 V when idle, and boosting 1 core., under load in Cinebench voltages are below 1.2 V.
Thats on ASUS Z790 APEX MOBBO
    Never had issues whatsoever!
Sry bud, i do know that INTEL HAS A BIG PROBLEMS HERE, but you sped up that process by pumping 1.37 constant voltage

    • @LousWRX
      @LousWRX  Месяц назад +1

@Need4FPS Well, I was mistaken by Intels promotional materials of this chip.
I should also mention had set a TJ MAX threshold of 87C, so realistically in gaming load, while all I use is my PC, for it probably is even really being pushed all that far as game typically utilize between 10-17% in games. And lastly, out of my past 24 years of building computers, this is the first I'm I've ever had a computer component fail, ever. Heck, I still own a secondary old built computer with a working i5 core 2 e4300, and also a q6600 quad core, still working to this very day. I've never had a history of burning up chips until this recent fiasco of Intel in some ways advertising their Chips of doing more than they really are capable of doing. It was a simple misinterpretation.
And now I'm a completely new AMD Ryzen 7950X3D build that is only pulling between 67-103 Watt gaming load. I should have done that sooner than falling for Intels marketing gimmick.

    • @club4ghz

He locked all cores at 5.9 instead of 5.7 so it was still doing that suicide voltage thing on some of them. Your CPU isn't doing it unless you're at 5.8.

      @@LousWRX
Fair enough... If you're playing on higher resolution, don't even bother messing with CPU unless turning off AI crap and undervolting cause in games you won't stress your CPU enough that will cause instability due to undervolting..but will extend its life.
Performance gains are almost non existent as majority of the load falls onto GPU itself.
Let's us know how the 7950x3d compares to 14900ks :)
I might upgrade next year to a new 3d chip if they re gonna release one, but will definitely keep the 13900ks to have some muscle (power) for workload lol
And just to add... Unless you're having an overkill cooling solution, something like hardcore water-cooling (or MORA) pumping consistent voltage (locking it) is not a good thing on a long run. I found adaptive & undervolting is the best thing to go for as a casual user (not an expert).
Potential locking yes, but for stock frequencies and mild voltage...yours was a bit crazy ;)

No way, man. I am really sorry to hear that. It's really good that you took action sooner, and don't worry, everything will be fine. Please consider upgrading your cooling system once your new CPU arrives. My CPU has been delided since day one, and at this point, the warranty is not available anymore, even if I glue it back. Glad that you kept it in its original state.
Since I heard recently about all this drama with degradation, I have changed my CPU to Intel default settings as well as you showed in your video. I know that my CPU is stable at 5.9 GHz by having 1.3V set into the bios. If shortly is not as stable as now, then I know as well that something is going wrong. No issues regarding shader compilation, CPU usage, and temperature are kind of skyrocketing; it seems that the complete system is placed to the stress test, CPU, GPU, and memory as well.
    God bless!

@BMAR92 Thanks, man. I appreciate the supportive words. And then just move to AMD, but I would like to wait for ZEN5 and 800 series Motherboards first. So I don't think I could wait that long, obviously.
And yeah, it's smart to move everything to Intel default settings, I may even & go lower set throttle temperature to like 80C and wait until the mid-August motherboard update with updated microcode until I do any increases in anything. And yeah, I do know I do need to get better cooling at some point. I just haven't done so yet, as my next big upgrade will likely be an RTX 5090.

Very sorry to hear you had issues only 4 months after build. I have been using Intel CPUs since the early 90s starting with a second hand 8088. I worked in high school during my summer break to afford a Pentium with 90Mhz. It was back then what is now the upcoming 15th gen. Top of the line. The CPU cost about 1500 dollars in today's money. Just the CPU. I then heard about the FDIV bug in a paper. Got it RMAd by Intel. It was a huge deal back then. They did the right then via a recall though very few users were actually affected by the bug. I then tried amd athlon in the early 2000s and got burned. The cpu was unstable and plagued by overheating. So returned to Intel and worked my way through the generations... Core 860K, 6700K, now 12700k. Before I built my 12700k system, I had actually built an amd one. That was around 2021. But it was unstable. Booting into Windows 11 blue screened. So I said, burnt twice, it is enough. Never going to back to amd now. Intel till I die. So this year, I was going to get a 15th gen one when they come out around October this year. But now not sure. I just dislike how Intel handled this whole thing, how this massive issue could slip through their QA process. I also got really tired of them trying to compete just by increasing the energy consumption. I live in the UK and energy is expensive here. So I think I may give AMD a final, third chance this fall... All the best for your return. Will you stick with team blue?
