Not using the turn signal, not checking the temperature gauge especially when driving at high speeds/load... Head gasket is most likely gone at +130°C water temp, head and oil temp was most likely even higher.
He blew the radiator, something that could have been very easily avoided by checking the engine temperature gauge. The rule of thumb for the W140 is 90 degree Celsius is the optimal, if you see 100 try to cool the engine (shut off A/C and relax on the gas pedal) , if you see 110 pull over immediately and 120 you're going to blow the radiator.
1:38 bro didnt even signals when exiting the round about or any other round abouts , poor truck! throwing hands at this point, bro actualy wore hand gloves . im so cringing
People talking entielly wrong here. There is 0 warning about the coolant and the temp reading is normal for these old diseles when pushed harder, it is normal. Warning lights are for windshield washer, broken bulb and the SRS or handbrake. There is 0 indication the coolant pipe or tank is about to burst (or whatever happened there). Stop blaiming the driver for not noticing stuff as there was nothing to notice. The only thing that could've been done is reducing the stress on the highway as these engines are generally too weak and prone to various issues in this specific car.
yeah, my father drives the exact same one but its tuned, every time he reaches above 200 km/h he sometimes completely stops on the gas and lets the radiator get some cold air to cool the engine off better and this works. he can drive at around 215 km/h comfortably.
It's an old diesel, you have NOT given the glow plugs time enough to warm up, you immediately startet the engine (after a first failure), you straight drove to the highway (and made big mistakes on using your accellerating lane) and went full throttle with a COLD ENGINE, you are wondering for the engine failure? You really mistreated that masterpiece of a car.
No, that's by design. I believe the intention was so, once you used the wipers, the water on the windshield doesn't go on your side and block your vision.

Yep, had it happen on a crappy old Chevy back when we were young and poor and definitely couldn't afford to have our only form of transportation break down. This was in the days before cell phones. Some kind stranger in a BMW stopped, then drove several miles to the nearest gas station and got us some water, then followed us there to make sure we made it so we could call for help. Family friend spent the weekend fixing it for us and we drove that car for another couple of years.
yeah happened to me in an old Audi 90 2.0 5-cylinder., on the way back home to NL from the Nordschleiffe.. top speed the whole way.. near the end of the trip it boiled :P
Yep on my old TDi b/c the workshop was a nutjob and failed to mount the coolant hoses properly. I lost one and then the engine overheated. Luckily (because I always check my gauges) I recognized it fast and left the Autobahn quickly. It still runs happily today :D
IT was toast already and he knew. He has started enough Mercedes diesels to know this engine was doomed. I think he performed the task at hand perfectly! Blow the motor!
Not sure what the armchair experts in the comments are moaning about really. Driving at that kind of speed you want to be spending most of your time looking ahead, not at the instrument cluster. The car was only genuinely overheating for 20 seconds or so before he noticed and started to scrub off speed, a few seconds later he turned the heater on to try and use the heater matrix to aid in cooling, then safely exited the autobahn and parked as soon as he could. Some of you are acting like he drove for several minutes at 200kph with the needle buried in the red and steam billowing out of the vents. Just stop.
The engine was already problematic from the factory, because the rear cylinders tended to overheat due to the routing of the water channels, and the cylinder walls also tended to break. If I remember correctly, experts also advised against revving the car higher than 4000 rpm over a longer period of time because of this problem. He also does everything right in this situation: he lets the car roll so that the airstream continues to cool it and he turns the ventilation up to the highest temperature. I strongly suspect that this video was intended to send the engine on its last journey.
Why revving it high before it has oil pressure, not to mention before the oil has reached the camshafts, the piston squirters and all bearings of the crankshaft? 🤦♂️ Just stupid people rev a 4-stroke engine above 3,000 rpm within the 1st 30 seconds after start! There is clunking noise from the beginning - you ignore it. 😵💫 You hear clearly when entering the highway it's not running right/"round" on all cylinders - you ignore it. 😵💫 The coolant temperature exeeds 100 °C - you ignore it. 😵💫 When the coolant temperature is at 120 °C you see the steam - and then it's the guild of the car? 🤦♂️🤮
The 350 Turbodiesel is not a very durable engine, the longer stroke compared to the 3 liter version did not do it good. And the OM603 Turbo does have problems with cracked cylinder heads, plus a tendency to overheat if the cooling system is not 100%. That said, keeping an eye on the temperature gauge *and* the warning lights would be a good idea. By the way, the transmission in this thing is a 722.3 that is not electronically controlled. When it slams into gears, it's due to a faulty vacuum system.
I think the failure may have already occured prior to this video. It probably has a bad head gasket, which would help explain the trouble starting and the poor acceleration. Unfortunately the block may have cracked hence the steam. These aren't by any means quick in the first place, but the acceleration should be better. Most people prefer the 3L over this engine.

That is not your own car, is it? You didn't pay for it, right? If it was, you would treat it in a way it's meant to be. THREE yellow warning lights were on indicating you that something was wrong. The motor sound also was giving you warning signs... How many warning lights more do you need to get it?? That was not an "engine failure" , it was your fault. You should have stopped immediately the car and should have driven it to the garage. You crashed the engine. That's just stupid behaviour and clickbait, not the way to treat such a car.
Why are you crying?
It was a shitter car probably on it's way to the junkyard 😆
Not only that, the red " low coolant " light also and the fact that the temp gauge was warning about overheating... How many more warning signs does a person need to figure out you need to stop right now!?
@@simonnyman9031 he doesn't care as there's no doubt a contract between the owner and this clown so he never has to take responsibility for when he breaks other peoples stuff... and he definitely drives like that, ignoring all warning signs, overrevving engines, etc

White smoke. We have a new pope... 😊

The fact fact that he did not shut off the the engine immediately drove me nuts
Didn’t you hear how does the engine sounds ant doesnt provide any power before trying ir top speed? 😀

this video gave me a headache
never turn off an overheated engine.
I came to look for such comment
Can you explain why?
Why not? He was going slowly so the turbo could cool down ( if it even was working lol )?
@@Alessandro-nq3tm Keeps the water pump running and coolant circulating - assuming that these subsystems are working correctly, at least.
If you shut it off, the coolant stops and the engine can heat-soak, allowing the hottest parts to be damaged by the overheat.
Engine was already done from the beginning. It was hydro locked
Fly high neglected engine
Poor S-Class…I wonder for what reason you push the old lady so hard, it was clear that something was wrong from the beginning on.
Bro made sure the engine heated enough before he decides to shut it down
3 contant warning lights and a blinking one, but the broken seatbelt buckle alone would have been a red flag.
I can't believe somebody offered this car to test drive with a broken seatbelt! How did that even pass German car inspection :O. Their inspections are extremely strict from what I've heard.
@zzoinks I am german, so I can confirm what you heard :) But tests are only every 2 years, what happens in between is on your own to check

298000km and she's gone. Unhealthy to start with and not checking gauges, not putting on the heating (if I see correctly), etc. Ouch!
It hurts to see this W140 not taken care of. From the start, the engine sound was way off, even after 290,000km, with proper maintenance should be as strong as an OM617.
yeah it's so weird and unexpected to see it overheating..!! redlining an old diesel at 4.5k rpm for long

Not using the turn signal, not checking the temperature gauge especially when driving at high speeds/load...
Head gasket is most likely gone at +130°C water temp, head and oil temp was most likely even higher.
lmfao you got mad at the seatbelt 1:05 🤣🤣🤣
I like the way the engine was pushed gently to top speed.
No way that thing passed TUV
He blew the radiator, something that could have been very easily avoided by checking the engine temperature gauge. The rule of thumb for the W140 is 90 degree Celsius is the optimal, if you see 100 try to cool the engine (shut off A/C and relax on the gas pedal) , if you see 110 pull over immediately and 120 you're going to blow the radiator.
whos driving? and why no seat belt? whats with the weird 2:03 ive never seen much annoying thing in under 3 mins. dislike

350 turbodoesel Head Gasket a big classic failure
Even if the coolant temp gauge rising is normal, you should still ease off , no?
I had a 1983 300D that was way faster at accelerating than this.
Clearly this engine was not in order from the begining.
It's an old diesel,
you have NOT given the glow plugs time enough to warm up,
you immediately startet the engine (after a first failure),
you straight drove to the highway (and made big mistakes on using your accellerating lane) and went full throttle with a COLD ENGINE,
you are wondering for the engine failure?
You really mistreated that masterpiece of a car.
The temp dail shows 100 degrees already hiting 120kmh, so at that very moment to step up max speed considering engine seizure, is a bit crazy....
POV: you ignore all the red flags
Aren't the wipers the wrong way around, like they would for a RHD car...?
No, that's by design. I believe the intention was so, once you used the wipers, the water on the windshield doesn't go on your side and block your vision.
@Danse_Macabre_125 Interesting feature, never seen it before. I guess you learn something new every day!
@@utharaptortrex I can't think of another time Merc did this other than here and on the coupé version of this; reckon it was just a step too far (as was having the interior rear view mirror be electric)

Guess it is a factory requirement to force to rev up the engine right after you started it... and reading the other comments, this whole thing was about to kill this car... and now the uploader is happy as we get annoyed and commenting LOL

Why turning on the heater?

The engine literally fried the moment the light came on, I would have turned off the engine. This repair must cost a lot.
Has this ever happened to you?
This has happened to me about half a year ago on my w126 280s. I replaced the radiator and and it didn't make any problems since then
yes, at night
Just stop.
Under no circumstances should temperature exceed 90C while driving highway speeds. It was possible to catch that earlier on.
Just stupid people rev a 4-stroke engine above 3,000 rpm within the 1st 30 seconds after start!
There is clunking noise from the beginning - you ignore it. 😵💫
You hear clearly when entering the highway it's not running right/"round" on all cylinders - you ignore it. 😵💫
The coolant temperature exeeds 100 °C - you ignore it. 😵💫
When the coolant temperature is at 120 °C you see the steam - and then it's the guild of the car? 🤦♂️🤮
At last on average drove cars over 200kmh over 200.000km without a problem is crazy
Would you like replace engine. And Start new 1000hp IS project ?

glad ur doing videos again
The most important thing is the driver had a glove. It is a musthave nowadays like hawk tuah.
Driving with low coolant tends to do that to any car, especially while trying to do a top speed test.
You had the warning light on the dashboard since you started driving, if I remember correctly those lights are warning lights

I feel like he did this on purpose for clicks.
