    My father suffered horribly from KIDNEY stones and had frequent surgery for them, until they came out with lithotripsy (sound waves used to break up the stones). He loved telling people all about how wonderful it was. If it is available in your area for gall bladder stones by all means I recommend insisting on that treatment if all the necessary conditions are met. I have several friends who had their gall bladders removed and they now have crappy side effects from the loss of their gall bladders.

    I have just been diagnosed with gallstones. I have no symptoms, and the gallbladder is not inflamed. But, my doctor immediately has scheduled a surgery consultation. I am very hesitant and feel I should seek a second opinion. I have had no pain or symptoms. They were performing an ultrasound for raised liver enzymes (not high, but elevated slightly). The next thing I know, my doctors' office is calling me to tell me that yes, I have gallstones, no, the gallbladder is not inflamed, and they are scheduling an immediate consult for surgery. Honestly, I am very concerned. I did not have the chance to speak to my doctor and will on Monday. If she persists with her course, I believe it would be best to get a second opinion.

    Hi i just had my baby three months ago. Before pregnancy I was considered really health and would often go to the gym (for seven years). During my pregnancy I started to eat more meat than usual because people told me to enjoy my pregnancy and to eat whatever I was craving, so I did. During pregnancy I did have what I now know are gallbladder attacks. Two days ago I went to the hospital for another attack which now I know I have gallstones. My gallbladder was inflamed, but one dr. told me that he will ask the surgeon if I need surgery or medication. They said surgery and told me that I was going to have my gallbladder removed in twelve hours. I did not have any pain after they did my ultrasound to figure this out so I was confused . When I went to my bedroom the surgeon and another physician pushed on my stomach and I didn’t feel anything. They seemed confused and the surgeon still said that I should do surgery to prevent any future attacks or I can try to follow a healthy diet. I did not want surgery. My baby is only three months old and I’m the only one who takes care of him for until nights when my fiancé comes home. I read that ursodiol works . I also heard that apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, apple juice, and milk thistle work as well. Is this true ? Why did I have to find out for myself that there are medications ? I only had attacks while eating fried foods and spices. If I take ursodiol can I still carry babies in the future ? Should I get a second opinion because it seemed like the doctors and surgeons were not giving me their honest opinion ?

    • @Fear.of.the.Dark.
      @Fear.of.the.Dark. 11 месяцев назад +2

      because those who have problematic gallbladders will keep on making gallstones forever. So even if you somehow push the stones out, it will come back. The problem is the gallbladder itself. It is unable to empty itself properly in first place and hence it keeps on making stones. If you watched all the videos, gallstones can be deadly if it gets stuck in common bile duct or pancreas. I know 2 persons who died because of delay in surgery at 60 years of age as the stone got stuck and infection rapidly spread to pancreas and liver.

    • @Horizons_and_People
      @Horizons_and_People 11 месяцев назад

      @@Fear.of.the.Dark. Thanks. 2 things:
      First, could you please share more stories about those 2 people? Did they know it was stuck and they didn't go for surgery?
      Second, yes you are right but I doubt that is the reason for not having this development. Removal of something even if it grows back is better than the pain, the risk of death and the removal of bladder.

    • @Fear.of.the.Dark.
      @Fear.of.the.Dark. 11 месяцев назад

      @@Horizons_and_People they were recommended to do surgery long before. But they did not do it because they did not want to have surgery and got scared and paid the ultimate price with death. Gallbladder became gangrenous over multiple years of chronic inflammation & immune system dysregulation and then infection spreaded rapidly around liver and pancreas once stones got stuck in common bile duct during particular gallbladder attack. When you are 60+ your immune system is not as active as you are in earlier age and it cant fight the bacterial infection quickly enough. And regarding second point, this is the exact reason why gallbladder surgery is recommended once you start having pain and attacks because your gallbladder is already not performing as it was naturally designed to do. Your risk of death and complications is much higher if you delay the surgery. You can keep doubting it but this is has been established in modern medical science already. You cant keep on having multiple surgeries over many years just to get stones out. Gallbladder is a small pouch. It is not designed to be cut multiple times over multiple years as that also has risks plus you have to cut your abdomen multiple times.

    Hello there, can you please advice. You strongly advice to reduce or eliminate fatty food if you suffer from gallstones, but there is another theory that says that by having a low fat diet increases the chance of gallstones because the bile is less frequently secreted and therefore thickens up in the gallbladder contributing to gallstones formation.
    What’s your take on this

    Hi! What is the difference between ursodiol, dehydrocholic acid, TUDCA and actually taking a primary acid like ox bile acid? I had a lot of symptoms vomiting nausea and the eco showed gallbladder sludge, first dehydrocholic acid healed me for like 8 months I stopped the pills and it came back worst than before, 3 weeks ago I started ursodiol and now things are going back to normal. Is it possible to take this acids for very long periods of time? In that case which type of acid will be the best?. I was told I have some type of defficient bile and need bile acids for the rest of my life, and for that reason they recommened not to remove the gallbladder because I may get worst symptoms if it is removed. Good doctors are quite limited in Ecuador sadly :(

    • @thesurgicalscholar
      @thesurgicalscholar  3 года назад +3

      I am sorry I am unable to advise on individual clinical decisions that are best made by your healthcare provider.
      TUDCA is the breakdown metabolite of Ursodiol, their efficacy is comparable. There is more evidence available for use of Ursodiol at this moment. The long term data from patients with PBC (Primary Biliary Cirrhosis) suggests that Ursodiol is well tolerated. 'Ox bile acid' is a food supplement and I don't think there is any efficacy data.

      Smaller stones are associated with a higher risk of passing in to bile tube and triggering complications, such as acute pancreatitis.
      As a specialist surgeon, any patient with gallstone associated pancreatitis I would strongly advise to have their gallbladder removed at the earliest to prevent further complications. Non-operative measures should only be deployed if surgery is not an option.

    Hi! My mom has been on ursodeoxycholic acid treatment for over two months, but we’ve been worried because she still suffers from jaundice, dark urine, and clay-colored stool. Despite maintaining a healthy diet she hasn’t gained significant weight since treatment. Do these have to do with the medication? Will these side effects go away eventually? How long does it take till the body responds favorably to the medicine and stops from having side effects? I’m aware that perhaps the doctor has weighed the benefits and risks and his judgment is that the pill is good (they were actually two doctors who prescribed her this medication). We also know that this has something to do with cholesterol stones because her past lab results came high on cholesterol and eventually went down to normal. Hoping to get a reply from you Doc, thanks!

      Please consult with your healthcare provider, I am unable to provide advice on specific patient conditions:
      Some general advice on gallbladder inflammation without stones :
      There are two possibilities, in sick patients or those with specific medical conditions, gallbladders do become inflamed without gallstones (acalculous cholecystitis) which is a serious condition.
      In patients with no significant healthcare issues, gallstones may not always be visible on abdominal ultrasound. MRI scan (MRCP) is more sensitive than abdominal ultrasound. The most sensitive is endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), which will not only pick up hitherto unseen stones but also sludge, cholesterol deposits, and biliary crystals all of which behave like stones.

      Preventative diet will certainly reduce risk of pain from gallstones but not eliminate it entirely. Ursodeoxycholic Acid requires conditions to be effective (small cholesterol stones, functional gallbladder and patent exit to gallbladder), it may also slightly reduce risk of pain. Please take all medication under the direct supervision of your physician. Gallbladder removal is the most effective strategy. Good luck.

    Hello there. Two weeks ago I was diagnosed with gallstones. It's just one, 2.2 cm, and the doctor immediately said to consult with an abdominal surgeon. I never experienced any attack, as I know of at least. There were moments when I felt pain on the left side of abdomen, after I over-eat, but never on the right side where the gallbladder is. And this is happening for the past five years or so, but only sometimes (maybe once every 2-3 months). Never had nausea or fever while feeling this pain. But the doctor said that could be also from the gallstone.
    I'm not afraid of surgery, I just don't want to remove my gallbladder if I don't have to. Has anyone had success with Ursodiol? Does it help to melt the gallstones? I've read it helps with cholesterol ones, which my doctor suggested I have. I would rather try that with a diet.
    Also, I'm curious if lithotripsy works since it's a big stone? I would give that a try too. Thanks to everyone who replies. Hope you're all doing well.

    IMPRESSION: Consider cholecystolithiases with sludge formation. Concomitant polyp not ruled out."
