I was at a store a couple weeks ago with my 3 daughters and someone with a service dog walked by. My youngest is 6 and she said “awwww!” and I saw the look in her eye of wanting to go ask to pet it. My middle daughter (age 8) goes, “we can’t pet him because he’s working”! I was so proud of her and glad that I’ve taught them to never pet a working dog!

dogs that have been raised to work (whether that be guide dogs, service dogs, police dogs, ect) they LOVE to work and will work until they literally can't

I tell them its interesting that you have that opinion but my dog loves working. My SD even when he is "off duty" he still loves to run back to me just to check in with me. Other service animals like miniature horses or pigs? Nope. Emotional support animals? Nope. You can’t put an animal to work even if that’s what it enjoys doing because logic

    • @NullaNulla

@@isabellasardella3357 problem is they have no ideas about how the dog lives to work with their pack/people and when treated correctly thrive in assisting their people. My girl gets very upset if I take the walking stick instead of her and oh boy if she's temporarily left inside whilst getting the car ready it's almost a crying match when we're all going out.

All people having a cat on their own started to talk about theirs. Which, don't get me wrong of course I'm interested and also of course I don't have to talk about him all day. I am a person that is VERY extremely allergic to dogs. I break out in hives all over my body being near one that isn't hypoallergenic, and even I allow people with service dogs to come into my store. I have a sign up that says not to bring dogs in unless it is a LEGITIMATE service dog. I do love dogs though. Even though I know I'll break out in hives, I can't just not pet a doggy when they come around. But I know better than to pet service dogs without permission from their handler. I would be lost without him. He is a UKDP trained and registered dog with canine partners (a specialist charity who work closely with guide dogs) and he is my canine partner he is to me and I hope I am to him. He changed my life so much. I have made HUGE mistakes at times but its a continual learning process. He is such an important part of life. He has a huge sign on his jacket which asks people to not distract him! People choose not to see that and the interruptions when I work him can frustrate if you are having a bad day. He loves life, is never far away from me even in the house and he enriches my life x

But ppl can't seem to read Patches or follow them. 🙄 sometimes we want to go get a gallon of milk without being stopped every 3 steps we take! The general rule of thumb, is treat a SD handler like u would treat a person. If u wouldn't stop a stranger and ask to pet there kid, or start a random conversation, don't do it to a handler. I have a service dog and I have missed several very important doctor appointments thanks to Uber not being trained that they don't have the right to deny their services to me. My dog is a Siberian Husky who I have groomed and take excellent care of to be totally sure she doesn't shed because I am in medical facilities a lot. I'm hyper aware of whether she is shedding at all or if her paws get dirty or whatever might be the reason someone might deny me access with her, because of her so I stay very on top of those things. I called Uber each time I waited for my ride through them and they refused to take me. One day it happened 3 times in a row for the same appointment, 3 drivers came and all three refused to take me with my dog. I absolutely understand they are very concerned about the cleanliness of their cars but unfortunately it's their job and it's against the American Disability Act which makes it illegal. Punishable by really nothing because I lost certainly can't afford a lawyer to sure Uber so they can really do what they want. And Uber couldn't care less. They don't train their drivers, the drivers aren't typically aware of these laws and for some of them it wouldn't matter anyway. Uber won't punish them or even train them properly or explain what the ADA laws are. We are in a time period where nothing is really taken seriously. They hire anyone off the street who has a license, registration and proof of insurance and a decent driving record. They could be anybody, sex offender, drug addict, their who is willing to hurt someone to get what they want. Anyway, I have had to stop using them because they are so unreliable when it comes to my dog and it upsets me so much when I am discriminated against in that way. I can't miss these appointments. One of the ones I missed was for a genetic specialist who I waited 2 years to see and I was placed on the back of the waiting list again when I cancelled it at the last minute thanks to not having a ride to get there on time. Very upsetting.

Rebecca Abrams yea we recently moved and finding a vet willing to work with aggressive dogs is tough. We have to go in before they even open, I give him Benadryl to slow him down, then they sedate him, do the work/checkup, then we load him in the car while he wakes up. It’s a process and expensive but our old vet was amazing. She never charges for sedation or coming in early. She was just happy he was getting care despite his fearfulness. Our new vet has tried to blame us for him being aggressive and thinks she’s gonna magically change him with treats. I told her he will not take treats from a stranger and it will only get him stressed even more if you continue to try. He got his shots but we are still looking for a new vet. She also charges for 2 appointment since she had to come in early, sedation, and for a private waiting room. We find that rural/large animal vets are the best for us as they don’t nickel and dime and will let us do the shots ourselves to not stress him out so much.

While many people argue that youtube auto captions videos, those captions often mess up and if there is ANY sort of background noise in the video, the captions won't even come close.

learning about other countries treatment of the blind is bewildering. as i mentioned above where i grew up in australia there is a guide dog school not far and the guide dog school would reach out to primary schools and give talks on how to behave around the blind (main take away being it's okay to talk to them) and on not distracting assistance dogs when they are "in uniform" etc.

I am such a dog person and every time I see a service dog I just stare at them for a second like “Look at that good boy/girl! Look at them! They’re doing such a good job! Good dog!”
I want nothing more than to just kiss their nose and tell them they’re a good dog, so I just stare for a second with pure love emanating from me
When I was younger I would ask “Can I pet them or are they working?” whenever I saw a dog in a vest, but now if I speak up I just say “I know I can’t pet them, but I must tell you I love them.”

This bothers me so much. Like even when people do this with animals that aren't service animals, but especially with animals that are service animals. I used to work at a petting zoo/pony ride place. People would try to feed our animals all the time, even with us politely asking (the first couple times at least, and then maybe not so politely anymore after that) them not to feed the animals. At least half the time they would get super annoyed at us and we would have to explain to them how the animals can only eat certain things or how they might be on a special diet cause of reasons and even then they would still sometimes be annoyed. It was so frustrating! I can't even imagine how much more frustrating it must be when you add in the the animal being a service animal.

My 6 year old daughter has an eye condition where she has a high probability of losing her vision in her late teens or early 20s so I really appreciate your videos. Her vision is actually very, very good for her condition right now. She uses a white cane but she also has level 1 autism and is a huge sensory seeker. She is obsessed with cats and dogs. It's very difficult to get her to leave dogs alone. We went on a field trip some months back and one of the dads, who was a veteran, brought his service dog. My child was having a very difficult time staying away from the dog. Thankfully, the farm we visited had farm dogs who love being petted and the owners have no problem with it so it was a good diversion, but still a problem because she was so focused on the farm dogs. When we got back on the trailer to finish the tour, the guy with the service dog came and sat right next to us. I really wanted to say something to him. It was obvious to everyone that my child was having issues staying away from the dog, why did the guy sit right next to us? He had already told her to stay away from the dog with a bit of edge in his voice. He knew it was hard for her. So frustrating. It felt like he was trying to test her or something. It's very hard for her to stay away from any dog, including working dogs. We talk about it all the time. I'm constantly reminding her to stay away. The last time we ran into a working dog, we were at the zoo and she made a bee line to the dog. Thankfully, I think my constant reminders to her are finally working because the second she headed towards the dog, I called my daughter's name and she changed direction away from the dog. I've been thinking about my daughter's future and the thought that maybe she'll have a guide dog some day is a possibility. I always wonder how she would handle people distracting her dog some day. I also wonder how she would handle losing a dog. I get extremely attached to animals and wouldn't allow pets in my house for that exact reason. I can't deal with their dying. I watched your video about Gypsy's death and that was rough. I'm sorry for your loss even though I know it was a long time ago. Clearly, she was extremely important in your life.

Thank you for this video! I am blind since birth and traveled with four dog guides over 20 years. Your commentary is so well put! In addition to what you said, I don’t like it when people call me mom and treat my dog like it’s my little baby. That infantilizes her and demeans the team effort of our working relationship. She is my right hand almost. We are a team and a true partnership built a Mutual respect for one another. I think treating the dog like a child diminishes the relationship that really exist. She is more than just a pet and Our relationship has so many more dimensions to it. My dogs have saved my life! They have kept me from getting killed from oncoming traffic from drivers who run red lights, and from falling into open manholes in the street. I believe that a working relationship with a service animal is one of the deepest relationships that mankind can have with a dog. I feel blessed beyond words to have such a meaningful relationship with a dog! I asked the general public to give our dogs the respect they earned and deserved for keeping us in safe travel every day. And it’s a little known fact that these dogs work for us because they want to work, not because they have to work. You cannot make a dog guide a person if they don’t have the will to do so. Molly, thank you for what you do on behalf of our blind community.

  • @Chompchompyerded

Amazing is definitely the word, Molly. Before I became bed bound I had a service dog named Mattie. One of the most amazing things was the change in her demeanor which came over her when I put her harness on her. She would go from standard "I wanna have fun! let's go have fun!" dog behavior to 100% concentration in an instant. As long as she was in harness she had a laser-like focus on her job. When we got home, off would go the harness, and off would go Mattie, going in search of her frisbee which was her favorite possession.
I had more to say, but I'll have to wait. Tears in the way.

I don’t have a seeing eye dog, but I do have a service dog. It’s a smaller breed than you, but she is so important for me.
I definitely understand what you’re saying. My last service dog had to be retired because of one of those hardcore dog haters. She physically attacked my dog in a store. The dog sniffed something and she screamed “ah-ha! I knew it! That’s not a service dog! It’s a fake and if you don’t leave now, I’ll kill it!”. We had to call the police, but by the time they arrived, she had left. Unfortunately, the dog had to be retired, because she couldn’t get past the fear of being attacked again. It was so hard. I didn’t go anywhere alone for many weeks. I have a new service dog, and we are still getting used to each other. I was allowed to keep the retired dog, and she’s a great pet now, but it is so frustrating that my medical “equipment” that cost thousands of dollars, was suddenly gone.
The people where I live are so anti-dog. They swear they are supportive of service dogs, but if that dog doesn’t fit their little preconceived image, it’s fake and you must be punished. It’s such crap.
I mean, really? It’s still a dog. They don’t behave perfect 100% of the time.
Still, I wouldn’t ever not be a service dog user. Mine performs a service I couldn’t do on my own, and no other person could either. The pros far outweigh the cons.
    The fur though. 😂

I had a patient last week who came in with his new guide dog. This was the first time I've had a patient with a dog before. (I'm a dental hygienist) I knew to respectfully ignore the dog BUT at one point I needed to pull my tray closer which was going to make all the tray cords lay on the dogs back. I was unsure if that would bother the dog or if it was something my patient would want to know. My patient sensed my hesitation and asked if the dog was in my way. I told him he wasn't in my way but I might be in his! Haha My patient explained that he'd trained to work in all sorts of conditions and would be fine. While I never touched or spoke to the dog, we did catch eyes once so.....I winked at him. I like to think he knew I was a fan.

I know someone who trains service/guide dogs. He said he sometimes meets the owners of dogs he's trained, and if the dog is working, he can tell the poor thing is straining against every fiber of its being to greet him excitedly. Sometimes he'll meet one at the dog park (he does train these dogs, and it's not all work, work, work) then the dogs do get really excited.
One of the hardest things is giving the dogs up once training is complete.

I have a couple of things to say:
    1. I am in cross country. So across the street from my school there is a huge land owned by this older guy. He takes Service dogs and guide dogs to school and gives them to veterans. He pays for a hotel where I live and the cost of school. The way my cross country group helps is that we raise money and half of the money goes to him and half to us. Another thing is since it’s cross country we race on a bunch of grassy places and he has a bunch of grassy land we would take care of the land cause he is too old to. We cut the grass pull the weeds water the flowers and in return we get to race on his land. This guy really does a bunch of great things for some people. And the reason why he does it is because the government doesn’t pay for the doggos and most people can’t afford to take a dog to school and let alone get a dog. So the guy buys a hotel and tickets for the people can come and get the dogs that are already trained. He really does have a great system. He also sells the dogs for like half the price. He lives doing this for a living. Btw he was very wealthy in his days so he has money to do this.
    2. What about going to the bathroom like do you bring him with you? Do you have to have the big stalls to fit him too?
    3. What about your period? Like is it a hassle to work with? Cause it’s annoying on its own let alone not being about to see.
The last two questions were for you and the first one was something to add in to the thing you said about the government not paying for the dogs. Sorry for lots of mistakes and stuff. I’m weighting this fast cause i have to sleep. Goodnight or morning to anyone.

I think learning self restraint with dogs in general is important. My general rule is not to distract any dog (service or not) when they are clearing on a walk where the owner is trying to get somewhere. I will approach non-service dogs (and try my best to ask) if someone is just chilling with their dog, or it someone is standing stationary near me and the dog takes interest. When you learn to just respect a dog’s personal space (I know, seems silly when many don’t respect yours haha) and their owners, the service dog thing is less difficult. And it’s so important to teach this to kids so they don’t spook or overexcite a dog and get injured.

When you talked about how they have flaws like any other dog it reminded my of Annie, a guide dog that my family have dog-sat when her owner went on holiday (her owner has sight in half of one eye so she could go places without Annie as long as she had family or a friend) and Annie was terrified of car rides. She had to go in the car sometimes but she would shake and whimper and I felt so bad for her. We also puppy trained a guide dog puppy called Tout. He sadly didn't pass his test because he was too friendly and got too distracted.

For any guide dog users who want to go to Disney but are worried about going on rides:
Most, if not all, of the big rollercoasters have crates you can put your dog in while you ride, just ask a cast member!! I'm not sure about smaller rides, some may let you bring the dog with you or have crates as well. Disney is very good about making sure everything is accessible for everyone!!

Hey Molly, you probably don't realize this but black dog hair does still appear on black. It sounds weird but it is noticeable. Don't worry about it though 🙂

I think she knows that, she’s just saying it isn’t AS noticeable as if she wore another color

My favourite are the "oh, so beautiful" comments as I'm walking by. I've started owning those comments and I'm like "I know I am! I really should be a model."

No to be disrespectful, but maybe from the government side, a guide dog is not a must. They do have a choice, you can chose a cane or a dog.

I am currently on the waiting list for getting a guide dog and will be paired up with one in a couple of weeks though I’m still fairly young I feel like I’m definitely ready for the responsibility so wish me luck😂

And hey. Depending on your age not everything will be your sole responsibility. Like parents ordering their food and all.
Just like it would be with a regular dog. I assume a lot of parents will help with some of the responsibility.
