Nick...I love these disassembly videos while I'm either sharpening or tuning up my knives. I play them on my phone and leave it on my workbench to sort of play in the background. It's nice to feel like I'm not the only weirdo playing with knives as an adult.
If I might say a quick thank you, Nick. Never in my lifetime have I ever actually sat down and fully disassembled a knife. It’s just something I considered an annoyance that I could never do and wasn’t coordinated enough for. Same with maintaining them. It always seemed like something left for someone else to do. But, in watching your videos, and getting the confidence up, as well as having the right tools and materials to do such a feat, I have now done so and found it relaxing. Now my Rat 2 in D2 is just perfect. Since it’s my EDC, I use it every day, and it started to get bad, so I used the wiha bitset, got some low viscosity mineral oil (I want my knives to be food safe) and two mini red solo cups marked “clip” and “no clip” for the screws from each side. Took it fully barebones and it reminded me of what I love about a basic knife. So thank you, Nick. You’ve made me a happy man.
I laughed you are just like me with screws and small parts. I have LEARNED the hard way - to keep a small parts container around. Harbor Freight has a magnetic one for really cheap - if not free... Appreciate each one of your videos that I have watched. Love the HONESTY. Thanks for the bike lube idea - that just became a double duty lubricant - it certain sure did!
LOVED this video! Thank you so much. First time taking it apart and needed guidance and this was perfect. I didn't have any lube for mine (other than generic silicone lubricant for hinges) and my knife wasn't corroded too much (other than the blade hinge hole slightly). But alcohol wipes and manual persuasion took it off. I didn't end up lubing it after all and the action is way better now that I cleaned 5 years of pocket crud out of it. Now it feels almost like new!
Thanks for this video nick, I'm newer to knives and this video really helped me learn. My rat 2 is now centered perfectly, has no play blade play, and has a great action. Thanks.
I would like to see a RAT II with G10 handles and a better steel. Pretty straight forward breakdown on this one, good to see it's so simple to do a complete breakdown.
There are many aftermarket options for modding/customizing the Rat II. There is a website called Way of the Knife that offers custom titanium handles, which I've put on mine. I bet you can find G10 somewhere.
I love the rat 2, and i love these disassembly videos, i often save them for just before bed. Then i sit with a cup of tea and enjoy the cathartic journey of watching the Nick gently and lovingly care for some great knives. It feels almost like a guilty pleasure, but a pleasure none the less.
Just bought my first ray 2. Unfortunately I didn't have the foresight and accidentally got the D2. I live in a humid state, but it's so well built that I still have no issues with it. I will be retiring the D2 and will go with the Rat 1 in stainless. Buying this knife was an excellent choice.
I have been pleased with my purchase of the Ontario RAT-2, which was due in no small part to your recommendation. Thank you. And this video, i am sure, will also prove educational.
Just got myself a Rat 2 today to replace my old edc. I've been hearing you praise the Rats for so long that I jumped at the opportunity to handle one. I am honestly surprised how nice it is, I was expecting it to be mostly hype. The moment I flipped it open I knew I was leaving the store with it.
I just picked up a Rat2D2 online for $45 and I love it.... for the money it would be nice if it had some kind of spring assist, but it certainly isn't necessary and the knife appears as though it'll last a lifetime as long as I don't hammer on it or treat it like a crowbar.... I appreciate you posting this video so that I can use your guidance when the time comes for me to overhaul my own Rat 2.
I got mine in April, 2019. I've been using it a lot and I just ordered my knife disassembly tool kit. I'll see how I do on my first disassembly this next weekend. Now what I need to figure out is how to sharpen it without ruining it nor expending over 50 bucks...
I've used both the Dry and Wet Finish Line chain lubes, Prolink, a couple wax chain lubes, and Sentry Solutions Tuf Glide. Finish Line Wet works best, and it's the lube I use on my knives. But wet lubes may attract dirt more than wax or dry lubes.
Last night I disassembled my kershaw nura 3.5 and for the first time in disassembling a knife I cleaned the internals with simple green instead of just wiping it down. Holy moly the action was so much nicer afterwards. I had to clean out all the coating that had come off from breaking the knife in.
Nick Shabazz That's a shame, if you can figure out a way to get it apart I highly recommend it. If my memory serves me right you have the nura 3.0. I don't know how the action would be on that because of the shorter blade but I would think the bearings would make up for it.
I laughed a lot at your funny comments. Cut on finger + Alcohol without gloves = I am not a brilliant man. And I'm throwing standoffs everywhere....This is why you keep a flashlight handy. I only laugh because I do the exact same things. Thanks for the break down. Great videos as always Nick.
I have a brand new D2 CF Rat 2 from Blade HQ that came sluggish on the open, and the liner lock is quite stiff..this video will come in handy....thanks Nic.
Here's something you might try. IMHO the main friction in the blade comes from the detent ball pressing against it. I put speck of grease in the detent hole with a toothpick and let the ball spread it. It seems to eliminate maybe 50% of the friction. I use green grease that I stole from work about 15 years ago. Actually I didn't steal it, it came with repair kits we got and there was enough grease with each kit to do at least five kits and was in a convenient little pocketable tube
@@dudemcx1077 it didn't have the smooth action that I was looking for. I took it apart and cleaned it to make sure that it was clean, then oiled it real good. Somehow I got the pivot just perfect(as far as tight enough that the blade is still centered, but loose enough to have smooth action), and then I spent some time flicking it open and closed. I've had to oil it again a couple times, but I do love to play with it, so that's to be expected. Hope this helps!
Just got myself an ontario rat 2 in aus8 a few days ago and I am digging it. The only issue I'd say is that when folded, the tip of the knife seems a little too "shallow", if any of you get what I mean, and I am worried that the inside of my pocket is going to get shredded every time I pocket my knife. Already sliced my hand when I was pulling something else out of my pocket. Any ideas on how to fix this or if I should try my luck with another ontario 2 or even 1 model and hope the blade folds a little deeper? Thanks adam
I just got my wife one of these in pink as part of her anniversary present. My little habit is rubbing off. Your praise of this knife validates my decision. 😊 As for the oil, what's the weirdest thing you've seen people use? I've been using 5w30 motor oil (doesn't take much) on mine.
did not even notice the time passing, great job..... Knife Center now has the Rat 2 cousin the Esee Zancudo in D2 steel for $36.95 stonewash, $38.95 black D2.... carbon fiber handles with D2 under $55.
Yeah I was wondering whether Nick has checked out the Zancudo in D2...reviews suggest it is a bit of a bastard to deploy easily, but I'm tempted anyway lol
Great channel Nick, subbed. Just ordered a Boker Urban Trapper over the CRKT Crossbones. Think I'll place an order for the Rat 1 with the D2 steel. Need a EDC to replace my Skeletool CX.
Hi, Nick, I'm expecting my green Rat 2 w/D2 blade in a day or two. Now, off topic, can you tell me where you purchased the black matt that you are using for this video? thanks a heap.
oh I think if any oil will improve a knifes pivot point, I suggest either Oust Met-ol lube and/or ionic flux both are skateboard bearing lubes I really recommend them I use them on my zt0450
I've carried a rat 2 in rotation for the last 2 years, beat the crap out of it, never seen a drop of oil or been apart from factory and it still opens just as smooth as any of my benchmades. Yeah it doesn't hold a sharp edge as long but hell, for the price of it, can't be beat.
I have a Rat2 for nearly 2 years and I agree that it is a great knife. I would like to buy a knife of similar size but with better materials and aesthetics. Any suggestions? I was considering the ZT 0450.
February 5th, 2020 I finally decided to order the Rat 1 (AUS 8) for $25 from Amazon. It arrived yesterday (Prime) and so far I like it. I'll probably get the Rat 2 in D2 which is $40 on Amazon. For almost two years I've been carrying a Kershaw Blur as my EDC folder and I didn't get the Rat 1 to replace the Blur I got the Rat 1 to carry around the house and yard. I like the satin blade on the Rat 1 but I'm more of a fan of darker blades and I kind of wished I got the black blade (like my Blur) but I will definitely get the Rat 2 D2 with the black blade because I like the look and to add corrosion resistance.
When using Frog Lube, it's helpful to heat up the metal first. This allows the pours of the metal to open up and absorb the Frog Lube. Thanks for the vid. I just bought a Rat 2 and wanted to see how to break it down to do the same thing.
berlinetta350 centering might be off bronze is by far the best brass is next. If your thinking about it because teflon is "bad" your wasting time teflon wears over time but while not recommend with teflon you could run dry. If you polish the bronze and use graphite grease the action will eventually be smoother than high polished brass/bronze replacements.
Andrew Ryan I don't see why centering would be off if you replaced the 4 washer setup with a 2 washer setup of the same thickness on each side. Only reason would be to obtain a slightly better action and not have to worry about the Teflon falling apart over time.
berlinetta350 The centering could be off for a Number of reason knife design, tolerances of the knife, washer shape, manufacturer quality control, etc I understand wanting to have Something that will last but to wear I've never personally worn out a teflon washer not even on a 2 year old cryo with a broken assist I gave my father. If you play with knifes and keep them over oiled and spotless yes the action is marginally smoother however is you use your knife as a tool and it gets really grimy before you clean it teflon is significantly smoother. Honestly if you want that frictionless action so you can flip all day and fidget for hours on end do yourself a favor and get something rolling on bearings.
what are the liquids that you've used in this video? I just ordered this baby in d2 steel and would love to take care of this baby as my first edc knife
Hey Nick, i have a Rat 2 D2 and when i got it and used it was centered. I opened it and cleaned it (as i have done dozens of times on all my other Knives) and now I can’t get the blade centered. Took it apart checked and re checked everything and i can’t figure out why. It’s making crazy. Any suggestions?
Nick, great video. Do you make a video to assist you in assembly before the video you release the video on RUclips in case you run in to a senior moment and forget how to put it back or is it all memory?
Just ordered a D2 rat 2. Funny, 3 years ago you were calling for it "d2" around the 9 min. Mark. Nice video. Thanks for sharing. I think this is gonna be a great knife all around. Is the bike chain oil a recommendation now after 3 years?
Nick you can buy a rust eraser online for about $5, it's basically a pencil eraser embedded with abrasive material and other than making a mess they work great
If you put lube into the standoff thread, Locktite won't "lock". Because it's literally a glue. And glue (this or any other) won't stick to a greased surface.
close the knife, loosen all the screws, all 9 or so of them including the pivot, and press the blade against the side in the direction it needs to go while you retighten all the screws
Thanks for doing this video. Very helpful watching you do each part. What brand TORX drivers do you use? Keep doing your thing and giving the great, good, bad and ugly. IT'S A BEAUTIFUL THING :)
I've been using a 100 year old bottle of Singer sewing machine oil, just because it was around. For me, just the tiniest bit on the end of a toothpick per surface. The tiniest bit of fresh 10w30 motor oil would be interesting -- it's super slick as you know if you've gotten it on tools Breakfree spreads, migrates, everywhere. Which is fine for a rifle, especially the barrel, but I don't think I'd want a knife like that.
It is a Wiha screwdriver set that you can find on ye ole Amazon.com for about $40, it is the Wiha 75992 System 4 Precision Interchangeable Bit Set. Comes with everything that you need.
I keep telling myself that I gotta wear out my rat 1 before I'll cary my rat2 haha. The two is soooo nice. Perfect size. Such a quick classy function able knife :)
I was servicing my rat 2 and accidentally stretched one if the teflon washers so I didnt reinstall them. The action seems the same to me. Only difference is the blade centering seems ever so slightly worse. But honestly not the end of the world.
Haha you've got to be kidding. I used the same bike lube as a desperate attempt to lube my RAT II that I got because of your review (MILITEC 1 didn't impress me). Also my name is Jonathan S. but a different one :P
I'm very interested in this knife. It doesn't look special to me in any way, yet I want to own one. Maybe it's because I don't have one and people seem to like it. Sigh........ Does that make me a knife nerd ? Lol
Nick - another great vid. I'll be referring to it in the future. I just received the Rat-1 with D2 and CF. Some of these budget knives leave me wondering why I sometimes spend hundred on knives.
The p105 fang is the rat number 1 killer and I think the p108 will beat the rat 2 in that’s form factor and they even have a gentleman’s knife model with the p121 hussar that I love.
lovely because I got mine today and it feels really well built and it's my first folder and I managed to take it apart and put it back together no problem too so I think that says something about the construction maybe? An idiot like me can operate it :P and the steel is good too.
Have you looked into the Russian sharpener that Wranglerstar uses on his channel? If not you need to, it looks like one of the best made sharpeners out there.
I'd loooooove to see a rat 2 in m390... Ontario is sitting on a fucking goldmine and they still choose to keep their knives at an affordable price. I respect that
Nick...I love these disassembly videos while I'm either sharpening or tuning up my knives. I play them on my phone and leave it on my workbench to sort of play in the background. It's nice to feel like I'm not the only weirdo playing with knives as an adult.

July 2019-- I just ordered a D2 version of the Rat 2 for $39.00. Can't wait to see it.

10:24 put it on what ?
hey Nick I couldn't tell what you said the torx bit size was. t6 and t8?
Matthew Keller it's a shame youtube doesn't allow you to rewind to that part.
Matt. Yep, I always have the Beta-Max on record when watching YT.
Eh, just bought rat 2 d2 and I just can't get it right. It almost touches the side :
Is that chain lube food safe? Something tells me it isn't.
Thanks for doing this video. Very helpful watching you do each part. What brand TORX drivers do you use? Keep doing your thing and giving the great, good, bad and ugly. IT'S A BEAUTIFUL THING :)
Id love to hear your thoughts on the crkt homefront, i think its a gimmick.
Could you also use breakfree CLP instead of FrogLube?
I've been using a 100 year old bottle of Singer sewing machine oil, just because it was around. For me, just the tiniest bit on the end of a toothpick per surface. The tiniest bit of fresh 10w30 motor oil would be interesting -- it's super slick as you know if you've gotten it on tools
Breakfree spreads, migrates, everywhere. Which is fine for a rifle, especially the barrel, but I don't think I'd want a knife like that.
Hey Nick, where did you get that little applicator bottle?
+Leigh J888 Just on Amazon. Something like $4 for a "needle tip applicator"
Thanks Nick. Very refreshing to hear honest reviews. I think we all need to hear more of the truth.
what brand is that torx tool? all mine keep breaking the bits.
It is a Wiha screwdriver set that you can find on ye ole Amazon.com for about $40, it is the Wiha 75992 System 4 Precision Interchangeable Bit Set. Comes with everything that you need.
Bladehq has a rat 2 with carbon fiber/g10 and d2 now.
I keep telling myself that I gotta wear out my rat 1 before I'll cary my rat2 haha. The two is soooo nice. Perfect size. Such a quick classy function able knife :)
Used the aus8 version for years switched to the d2 my god what a knife for the prive even the aus 8 version is miles ahead of any knife under 30.
You are awesome Nick!
Teflon washers used on the blade side Nick? How bad are the vapors from that chain lube?
I was servicing my rat 2 and accidentally stretched one if the teflon washers so I didnt reinstall them. The action seems the same to me. Only difference is the blade centering seems ever so slightly worse. But honestly not the end of the world.
Haha you've got to be kidding. I used the same bike lube as a desperate attempt to lube my RAT II that I got because of your review (MILITEC 1 didn't impress me). Also my name is Jonathan S. but a different one :P
Outstanding video!
Thanks for taking the time!!!🔪🗡🔪🗡🔪🗡
Great vid Nick. Keep it up.
I'm very interested in this knife. It doesn't look special to me in any way, yet I want to own one. Maybe it's because I don't have one and people seem to like it. Sigh........ Does that make me a knife nerd ? Lol
Yep. But welcome to the family :)
Great job Nick!
Nick - another great vid. I'll be referring to it in the future. I just received the Rat-1 with D2 and CF. Some of these budget knives leave me wondering why I sometimes spend hundred on knives.
Is that lube really that bad? Or is Nicks node just softer than his hands? LOL
Hey nick could you please take a look at ruike knives? I think they might just become the new kings of your under thirty dollar knife challenge!
The p105 fang is the rat number 1 killer and I think the p108 will beat the rat 2 in that’s form factor and they even have a gentleman’s knife model with the p121 hussar that I love.
I've got a few of those coming.
lovely because I got mine today and it feels really well built and it's my first folder and I managed to take it apart and put it back together no problem too so I think that says something about the construction maybe? An idiot like me can operate it :P and the steel is good too.
You drop a lot of stuff. Are you a surgeon? :)
Nick what sharpening system do you use?
Edge Pro, but I'm probably going to be reviewing a KME system soon.
I respect that
Just got mine in the mail
Doing the classic 7983 hair reveal I see
