Liberty Devitto! They had some serious musical chemistry. The amount of energy on that stage shouldn't be possible to physically contain, but somehow it worked.
what a band..... Billy - Vocals/Piano Liberty Devitto - Drums Russell Javors - Guitar David Brown - Guitar Doug Stegmeyer - Bass Mark Rivera - Sax/Vocals Dave Lebolt - Synths
Indeed Jordan,I saw him not long after he sacked them,it was like a f*****g tribute show!....lackluster to the point of boring, was like they were just going through the motions to get a paycheck, even Billy.Sad.
That intro is quite simply amazing. His hands are a blur and it looks like he's just frantically banging away at random keys, but the melody and accompanying chords are clear as day and delivered with superhuman precision. What an absolute legend. ❤️
Look at the smile on his face. He's fucking jiving to this hard ass song while people cheer and he's waving at folks, just chilling. God damn I love this man.
I don’t think so. I remember an tv interview with the Austrian broadcast while BJ was in Vienna to take lessons with some classical Piano players, maybe 10-15 years ago (B. Joel’s father lived in Austria). He said at least something like that highly trained classical players are another class (not: better) of players. And i think that he’s uniqueness lies not in the piano playing but rather in the genius combination of playing, writing/compose melodies which are like a brand sign plus highly poetic lyrics. You can find maybe a little more people in the world who are really good in one of those „things“, but people who are so far up in all of those things like Mr. Joel...? I don’t think so. Just my little opinion.
I used to play many of Billie's songs on the piano. But, no matter how many hours I practiced, I could never play the intro to this tune note for note. There's good, as I was....then there's virtuosity, as was Billie. Phenomenal talent.
He had a motorcycle accident that required the removal of a bone in his thumb, so it's extra floppy. He claims that nobody else can play this song the way that he does, because of it
I picked up piano for the first time in years yesterday. It's actually not that hard. The speed is the easy part, the hard part is hitting the chords at the correct time
Liberty De Vito on drums - a FAR KEN legend. Saw Billy Joel at Dallas Brooks Hall in Melbourne back in the 2nd half of the 70's when he only had Piano Man and Turnstiles out. De Vito was given an ear splitting standing ovation. Best concert I have seen and I've seen a few - even when I wasn't an Angry Young Man.
Saw him later at the old Festival Hall the only better concert I ever saw was Ricki lee jones at Dallas Brooks in 1985 but really there was nothing between them but I will say billy gave us 3 hours Ricki a very poor hour 15 mins ...must have had to get back to her syringe !
@johnwoods7941 - Not trying to be a dick here and I know that I am replying three years later, but Turnstiles was Billy's fourth solo album, so Cold Spring Harbor was his debut and Streetlife Serenade came between Piano Man and Turnstiles.
Saw Billy in 1982 as part of The Nylon Curtain tour. Still remains in my top-3 live performances of all time. Every one of those guys on stage was a virtuoso musician, but Liberty really was on another level! Just a mesmerizing performer on stage.
I saw them do this at the Rivera theatre here in Chicago in 1977 before he broke into superstar status with the stranger which had just come out. My brother and I were in the front row and actually sat on the stage stairs chatting with one of the roadies. What a wonderful memory. Of course, Joel was fantastic. What a talent! I was into him all the way starting with Cold Spring Harbor.
There is no “best ever,” just a pantheon of the best. Within that, it’s a matter of personal preference. Billy Joel is definitely in it. So are Paul Simon, Stephen Sondheim, Bob Dylan, and probably a few others. If you include duos, King & Goffin and Rodgers & Hammerstein would be there as well.
His mastery of rhythm; his grasp of the human condition… When he speaks of all the stuff “a modern man accumulates” he knows completely from whence he speaks!! Thank you, Mr. William Joel for giving all of us the lifetime gift of your poetry and prose set to music!! You are a true MASTER!!
Reminds me of the stories of how my grandpa and dad met Jesus and set tbem free from the anger thay lived in them.without Jesus it is like a prelude to there lives.🎉
The kids nowadays don't care because all they see there is effort. They believe that they can get rich and famous just by winning personality and beauty contests and sadly, most of the time, they're right. The U.S. is gonna go straight into the trash heap within the next 20 to 30 years after the current crop of zombified screen-addicted inarticulate drones have taken the reigns, and I for one hope that I'll be far too dead to suffer that bullshit.
While Russell Javors plays the harmonica, drummer Liberty DeVitto slightly rushes. And then going back to the opening, faster tempo makes it harder for Billy to hit the piano. When he goes through it, you can hear him roar "Ohhhhhh!". I like that!
A riveting exciting and astonishing performer artist rare and priceless Some of my best memories occurred when he was around in the eighties I wish I could relive them long live the piano man
Amazing! Highest respects to Billy's musicianship. Live in New York was the first music VHS I ever bought (way back when the deer and the dinosaurs played), and I wore the shit out of that thing. Still one of the top performances I've ever seen, by anyone. Thanks Billy.
Please Billy, you must have the concert released on DVD/Blue Ray. We know the video ain't great but the audio is and you should immortalize this show for history... Mind blowingly good!
Cookin' right along aren't we Liberty? ha ha!....that 'look' from billy @ 3:20 said it all. Wondering if Billy was even signaling for him to slow it down just a tad. killer Opus song... maybe just ever so slightly...Fast. Tough to sing. Ask Billy. Lol!
When I saw this performance for the first time on "Laser Disc' that my uncle owned, I was a 4-year-old Japanese girl and profoundly astonished by his play. It was as shocking as watching Michael Jackson's "Thriller". That lead me to start learning piano at the age of 5 and got me interested in another side of the world, the United States, and its language. After 40 years of that, now I'm a wife of American citizen and loves listening to wide variety of music, of course including Billy Joel, to this day. I really feel like life is always circulating - just like being connected by a small dot
my band director arranged a shortened marching version of this and we have a joke that when we don’t play loud enough or strong enough we are a mildly displeased gentleman rather than an angry young man
Listen to the musical content in this. Released by a "pop" artist. My all time favourite will always be Billy. Nothing touches him. What passes as "music" today is usually just three words repeated over and over in autotune.
Spotlight on Billy hammering repetative keys THE most dramatic intro in a concert setting. Looking forward to seeing him in Cardiff Stadium this Friday, sadly Angry Young Man no longer part of set list..☹️🤞
@@jondesalvatore2052 He sure is! He still does drum clinics and session work, but Billy's band, in my opinion, was never as tight as it was during that era. I've always said you can see a musicians true love and passion when their blood flows right from their body and through their instrument. Liberty never left anything on the stage.
Angry young hands.
😂
❤❤❤
Even with a injured thumb Billy plays perfectly
Had a motorcycle accident back in April 82 earlier that year. No bone in that thumb. He's amazing!!
Alexi Laiho played with a broken collarbone and I guarantee this song influenced Follow the Reaper.
I think that was to protect the piano...
@@iloveamerica11 lmao
I've heard him claim that nobody else can play that part that fast, because nobody else has the same injury
Today's music industry has no patience to show for this kind of song structure. It's a brilliant introduction.
I’m not sure what the most entertaining part of this performance is; Billy Joel’s hands or the drummer
Or maybe Billy's squinched-up nose/angry face
Both.
Both!
Having Liberty Devitto in the band did enhance his music for a over 2 decades.
@Bart Lee as a fan of Metal myself I agree, I’ve never really seen rapid speed taken to this level on piano outside of classical music.
Liberty Devitto! They had some serious musical chemistry. The amount of energy on that stage shouldn't be possible to physically contain, but somehow it worked.
what a band.....
Billy - Vocals/Piano
Liberty Devitto - Drums
Russell Javors - Guitar
David Brown - Guitar
Doug Stegmeyer - Bass
Mark Rivera - Sax/Vocals
Dave Lebolt - Synths
Check out the Lords of 52nd street.
Then he fucked them all over except Marco. I love Billy Joel, but that was fucked up

Cheers for that. The drummer is fantastic.
You forgot Max Riverra's awesome air guitar.
Back in the 90's I was working the front desk at a YMCA, graveyard shift, Billy Joel's music kept me company.
How much does this describe so many angry young men today? How prescient!
@ True!
That intro is quite simply amazing. His hands are a blur and it looks like he's just frantically banging away at random keys, but the melody and accompanying chords are clear as day and delivered with superhuman precision.
What an absolute legend. ❤️
Liberty DeVito...one of live music's best KICK ASS drummers. The recordings don't really show it, but here is the proof. Bravo Liberty DeVito!
Fast hands !!!!
Look at the smile on his face. He's fucking jiving to this hard ass song while people cheer and he's waving at folks, just chilling.
God damn I love this man.
I would dare to call this song "A MASTERPIECE". It's so perfect, the music, the lyrics, the introduction...everything.
A master in our time. How blessed are we to experience his greatness! 🎹🎵💙
I would argue, even with all the classical piano players throughout history, this guy is easily in the top 10, maybe top 5. Extremely rare talent....
Andrew Luttrull he’s extremely talented, classically trained as well.
Agreed
Yes he is... a geneous

Liberty was a crafty bugger...
45 years later..... still a phenomenal song!!
Timeless music.
47 years later (2024) and more apropos than ever!
It’s crazy how he still plays it exactly the same today
Just a bit slower
@@harveyandrews6731 and lower
Yeah. He changed the key lower and plays it slower, but give the old man a break.
It's really, really easy to play. It looks hard but it is an illusion. It isn't even in his top ten hardest piano parts.
I saw them do this at the Rivera theatre here in Chicago in 1977 before he broke into superstar status with the stranger which had just come out. Insane! As a 26 year old I couldn't imagine🤯❤️
This is why he is the Piano Man!
☆Billy Joel is amazing!☆
HE IS A GOOD MUSICIAN...WITHOUT ANY DOUBT...GREETINGS FOR ARGENTINA
One of the greatest musicians/entertainers of all time. I was lucky enough to see him twice.
I'm still amazed by how he plays the hell out of the piano in the intro. His hands are moving so fast that they're just a blur to the camera.
I believe that Billy Joel is the greatest American singer/songwriter ever... Change my mind.
Bruce Springsteen says hello
He's very good, but I personally will put Billy's catalog against his for the best. @@GiacoC

Nice caveat that it's only American, cause otherwise the ghosts of Freddy Mercury and David Bowie would have something to say
Liberty absolutely killing it on drums here
When Billy does play this song, it really does show off his talent.
I quite like the bit when he plays the piano
I love the extra ohhhhhh ooohhhhoo , I sing that part when I hear this on the radio...

There's no music like this anymore!
One of my top musical moments of younger days. THAT is a band.
I know Billy is amazing but how are more people not mentioning Liberty Divitto!! He is absolutely crushing it!!!

Billy Joel ROCKS!!
WHY is this so beautiful I don`t understand
Is there no limit to Kramer’s talent? Who knew he was such an incredible drummer?
HAHAHA.. Took me a split second to see it.. Truly LOL....!
How great is that ! Outstanding performance by Mr Billy JOEL !
A prog rock masterpiece🤘🔥
And… your Band definitely sound as great as your drummer is🤘😌

This song is beyond good... Its just billy, nobody could EVER replicate him
He did all that with a taped up thumb. Unreal.
Always an inspiration to me. 😉
Turnstiles, my favorite album. Got me through some rough times.

What a studio perfect band. It’s all real too.
I really like this version, a refreshing take on the song.
