In 1987 The Russian Government invited Billy Joel and his band to come and perform.....he accepted and the rest is history.....my favorite part of all the videos from the six shows is Liberty DeVitto on drums.....without his backbeat Billy's music would not have been the same.....What a great Rock Drummer, amazing musician.....
It took me a whole year to learn that song when I was 19. I learned every Billy Joel song back then but that one took me a year. Never took a lesson of piano in my life till I saw his first concert in 85 in Oakland California. Plus I got to meet Christie Brinkley. Was the best night of my life. Thanks to my good friend that took me. I was sitting right behind him in the 5th row from the stage. He was the one that got me playing the piano. Plus I did a lot of Elton John also. They were my 2 favorite bands.
Amen! I say he’s the greatest singer songwriter to ever step foot on this earth & there’s not really a close 2nd. I can also easily back up this claim.
@@BigPapa0610 Liberty is great but this is a Billy Joel concert, not a Liberty DeVitto one. The rest of Billy's band back then were great too but without Billy's songwriting, none of them would have anything to play here and some of them are still making a career and a living from playing Billy's songs.
Possibly because Liberty is a very high energy drummer who likes to push tempos, but with Billy getting up in age, he would prefer a slower pace that doesn't use as much energy to play.
Legend has it (ie; some story I read on the Internet a while back) was that it was related to money. Basically, the story said that Billy's manager told him he could get musicians as good as his existing guys, but for a lot less money. So Billy basically replaced several of his guys with other guys who did it for less. Not sure how true this story is, but I played drums for well over 30 years and LD was one of my all-time favorite drummers...and he sort of alluded to this explanation in an interview I read over the years. So it wouldn't surprise if it were true. That said, Chuck Burgi is a fine drummer. But I can play those tunes as well as I've heard him play them. But I could only *hope* to bring the sort of energy to them as Liberty DeVitto did. He's the master of 1) playing the right thing for the tune, 2) with an incredible level of energy, and 3) coming up with some really innovative fills using the 'e' and 'ah' 16th notes. Go listen to his fill coming out of the bridge in "Shameless" once...or at the intro to "Only the Good Die Young." It's very difficult to evenly space those 16th notes the way he (seemingly) effortlessly does it. He's a machine.
One linguiring question- How is this picture quality even possible for an 80's concert? This looks like high def. Most concerts where shot on video. But even if this was shot on film you would expect some aging. The picture quality is beyond me. No grain, no shimering. Just amazing.
And to think that he was once told he would amount to nothing in music. Yet history will illustrate him as a Rushmore level musician. Worthy of being carved in stone and history itself.
These new uploads keep getting better and better!! This concert deserves to be uploaded in full like the other recent ones. I can't wait for the rest!!

It's hard to say who is the better pianist as Elton John never plays anything beyond accompaniment. Trust me though, he can - he went to the Royal College of Music at a very young age. That is a big thing amongst musicians here in the UK. He must have been a seriously good player. My money would be on Billy Joel for what it's worth. However, the idea that Elton John couldn't play this is preposterous. It's a show piece and looks really impressive but it isn't hard to play at all. I could play this when I was 14 and I was worlds away from the Royal College of Music.
The first rock concert I went to.
Дмитрий Гербольдт Me too - same tour, but in Birmingham, England
And I went in 1987, when he came to us in Leningrad.
That's a great start! Ha! Cheers, chuvak!
@@ДмитрийГербольдт Lucky guy, that;s part of the history of the Rock.
In Russia???
He had a sore throat during the recording of this. He still sounds amazing
What a talent!
.....and a bandaid on his finger😁😁
I watched the video they were trying to interview him and he said the more I talk the worse the concert will be

My first Billy Joel concert was June 1978 at Madison Square Garden. It was unbelievable. All the videos you put up are just amazing! Thanks!
Billy Joel is the best musician of all time. End of story.

This was Billy in his prime years. Only saw him once during the Storm Front Tour, so glad I got to see such talent
Amazing quality
Genio
Damn his band was tight! It is amazing to think this is a a live performance! Every player is right on, and Billy Joel is so damn great!
Could not have done it without Liberty on the drums!

This takes strength... like physical strength.
Few things are as satisfying as watching Billy Joel's hands playing this song on the piano
The best Performance of thus Song. Just awesome!!!!!
The Brilliant Billy Joel, seen him live more times than most people have hot dinners. Love this guy!
That little "meh, it couldn't be that great" at 4:39 😄
I love Billy Joel!
Platonically
I have a crush on Billy Joel.
amazing
Thanks for all the wonderful songs ❤️
I love it!!
Finally! A filmed recording of the 1987 concert!
Billy you are amazing. Playing the piano a just knocks me out
Monster drumming.
Wow
Billy is fabulous still. The man has enormous talent. He's a living legend
He is s amazing! How fast was he playing at the end? So fast and accurate! Wow!!
The piano whisperer I went to a concert in the 90's loved it he reminds me of my childhood
I never understood why Billy dumped this drummer.
I KNOW
Possibly because Liberty is a very high energy drummer who likes to push tempos, but with Billy getting up in age, he would prefer a slower pace that doesn't use as much energy to play.
Worst mistake he ever made. I stopped seeing Billy live once he dropped Liberty

theres algorithms and automatic grain remover programs and all kind of stuff that fixes that
This concert looks better than MJ's 1992 Bucharest concert

The piano man he is amazing

Masterful rendition of this classic song from the summer of 1987!

There's a place in the world for the angry young man
With his working class ties and his radical plans
He refuses to bend, he refuses to crawl
He's always at home with his back to the wall
And he's proud of his scars and the battles he's lost
And he struggles and bleeds as he hangs on the cross
And he likes to be known as the angry young man
Give a moment or two to the angry young man
With his foot in his mouth and his heart in his hand
He's been stabbed in the back, he's been misunderstood
It's a comfort to know his intentions are good
And he sits in a room with a lock on the door
With his maps and his medals laid out on the floor
And he likes to be known as the angry young man
I believe I've passed the age of consciousness and righteous rage
I found that just surviving was a noble fight
I once believed in causes too
I had my pointless point of view
And life went on no matter who was wrong or right
And there's always a place for the angry young man
With his fist in the air and his head in the sand
And he's never been able to learn from mistakes
So he can't understand why his heart always breaks
But his honor is pure and his courage as well
And he's fair and he's true and he's boring as hell
And he'll go to the grave as an angry old man
There's a place in the world for the angry young man
With his working class ties and his radical plans
He refuses to bend, he refuses to crawl
He's always at home with his back to the wall
And he's proud of his scars and the battles he's lost
And he struggles and bleeds as he hangs on the cross
And he likes to be known as the angry young man
