- Here are 10 Tips you didn't know about The Long Dark... or maybe you knew all of them? Most of these tips are minor things and won't affect survival or gameplay, but are instead little tricks or nuggets you perhaps didn't know.
And yes, you can of course just aim down the sight with the revolver... but that doesn't look as cool (and you can trigger a wolf charge)!
All content is correct and verified as of v.1.97, but is subject to change.

This tutorial does not feature any streamer, unlike the other tutorials. This was done deliberately, in order to keep the length down, so the video is nice and short. An early version used 3 clips from streamers, but they were all clips used in other videos, so I scrapped it to shorten the video. Don't worry, the streaming community will be featured in other videos. Check out The Long Dark on Twitch: There are loads of super friendly and helpful people there.

Editing and content disclaimers:
- Moose carcasses also protect you from wind. Deer carcasses also do, but they are too small and generally it won't work. However, if they fall near an edge, their body can contribute towards making a wind wall. In practice, this has almost never happened to me.
- If you don't have the Jerry Can in your inventory, you get lamp oil bottles instead that hold up to 0.50 liters. These cannot be transfered to the Jerry Can.
- The trick to harvest clothes to pass time also work with other things, e.g. harvesting a tool or breaking down something. Keep in mind that even though time passes, you are not curing Cabin Fever this way.
- You can, of course, just aim down the sight with the revolver. Using the campfire is a gimmick. However, if a wolf has aggroed you and you aim down the sight, then you will trigger a charge.
- A little trivia: The footage of the bedroll in the dark is from the same run as the timelapse of Signal Hill in the opening. The poor character has been sitting around for almost a year doing nothing. I call her Patient Penny. - Игры
I have a ton of hours in this game on looper. All of these tips were either stuff I learned incredibly late, or were still new to me now. Excellent video, look forward to seeing more.
is this game scary?
@@beyourselfth I would sday its focus is not to be scary, no. Its can of course have some moments that are a bit scary, depending on how you play (like if for example you are outside wandering outside during an arora event and a wolf attacks you). But that can largly be avoided depending on how you play.
@@AceHawk37 I love a good survival game, but after the forest, I dont trust nothin
@@beyourselfth yea this game is great its not supposed to be scary at all only thinks i think would be scary are getting attacked by a wolf in the aurora or in pitch black but this can be avoided.
@@Zhed_555 awesome! Thank yall!!!
Coffee and tea provide more hydration for their weight than plain water
Solid tips. May I humbly recommend anytime you are dealing with cabin fever, snow shelters can save lives
" _Just 15 sticks and five pieces of cloth can save a life...could it be YOURS? Sneak past a hungry wolf-pack to reach your nearest Aurora-powered phone, and call today for our special, frostbitten-fingers-saved-or-your-sticks-back, no hassle guarantee!_ " ☻
commander Tom with the assist, ladies and gentlemen :D
Atm snow shelters are bugged
Alternatively, make a custom game and disable the stupid ass cabin fever mechanic
That bedroll navigation trick is genius. The most annoyed I ever am in this game is being stuck in a dark interior because I don’t want to use my matches.
if you have a storm lantern you can start igniting it but not fully ignite it and use the flashes of light without using any fuel
when being in red health , prevent the character from stumbling and walk straight by taking a can or building something, you will stay still and walk perfectly fine while holding that up.
That jerry can tip is genius. The stamina depleting when looting is pretty weird. They should definitely patch that.
You actually don't need a jerry can to get lamp oil from cooking fish, that happens no matter what (assuming you don't burn the fish to a crisp that is). If you don't have a jerry can, the game will just spawn a small lamp oil bottle (the kind that hold up to 0.5 kilos and have the "ever-flame" label.
@@Seriously_Unserious Yeah you're right. But I mean the weight efficiency. With the same amount of oil the jerry can weighs less than the lamp oil container. I never thought of utilizing that when fishing :D
@@dominikkuzila The main issue I find with the jerry cans is they hold so much (up to 4 liters) that the weight adds up to too much for many situations. Yeah, 4 liters in a single jerry can may weigh less then 4 liters spread across 8 little cans, but the differnce maker is with the jerry can, you're forced to carry all 4 liters all at once, or nothing. With the 8 small cans, you can carry only as much as you really need, and in most cases, 1 or 2 little cans is sufficient to keep your lamp going. The jerry cans I tend to stow away at a base and carry them if transporting the oil to a new region (where I'll store it at that region's base) or that's the only container of oil I have and I don't need to worry about being put over weight.
This becomes an issue especially when you're travelling to a region only accessible by rope climb, or within a region where major portions of the region are only accessible via rope climb. EG, you can only reach the upper portions of Timberwolf Mountain by rope climb.
There is actually a mod for both fuel cans and water. No magic containers that appear at need and no can despawns.
@@icecold9511 are there any must have mods for this game? It’s annoying long dark still doesn’t have Steam workshop support in 2023.
About sprinting at wolves. I wait a bit until they stop and start growling at me. And then I don't run at them all the way. All I need is a short movement. I sprint less than a meter forward and it has always worked so far if I'm not encumbered or with sprains. This also reduces a risk of getting into a struggle.
Good point. You can also toss the lit torch or flare in front of the wolf, and it'll have much the same effect, with even less risk of getting charged and will also work on demoralizing timberwolves. Though with those your best bet is a marine flare as the normal flares have a very small AOE compared to marine flares and reduce their morale from the toss method then the marine flares do. If you are up against timberwolves, be aware that throwing the flare disarms yourself and other timberwolves may take advantage, also be aware that if you run or walk directly at a timberwolf and it does not get scared (ie by a lit flare/marine flare) then you can get into a full wolf struggle with a timberwolf. Those are tougher then a struggle with a normal wolf, but if you win, can knock down the pack's morale by as much as nearly half. But you may have taken bleeding wounds or sprains and lost a lot of your own cnd too, so may be left more vulnerable to the rest of the pack if their morale didn't break after that sruggle.
Use any weapon (even a stone will do) to scare the wolves away. When you are holding a lit torch just approach a wolf then hit a weapon draw button. Your character will drop a torch on the ground and draw a weapon. Aiming weapon at wolf while having a lit torch on the ground will scare wolf away. No chance of getting into fight.
@@leeharveyoslik The same also works for lit flares, marine flares and campfires. Just be careful of aurora wolves, they can sometimes ignore fear and attack anyways. I've had them charge when you'd never expect it normally.
Sprinting method is a bit faster (doesn't make much difference, but it's perfect if you have low patience). And on top of that, it's really satisfying to intimidate a wolf like that.
By the way. Yesterday I tried this without realizing I'm encumbered. Obviously it didn't work but because I only did a very short sprint, it didn't get me into a struggle either.
I'm still fairly new at this game, but on Stalker I've always just waited for the wolf to stop because of the torch, then walked (not sprinted) towards it until it yelps. So far the wolf has never failed to turn and run away. Every other tip has always resulted in the wolf picking a random direction to flee, which has got me mauled a few times when it came towards me!
I believe starting up the storm lantern (but not actually fully igniting it) will give you brief flashes of light with which you can navigate through dark rooms without using up any fuel.
You're right, but it automatically centers your view, making it difficult to see what you're running into most of the time. Still helpful sometimes, though.
I do this for cheap light at home
i figured this out myself and its really useful when trying to find my bed
My useful tip: you can toggle the crouch key on and off as you approach a deer or rabbit while behind it to get incredibly close for an easy kill. The game doesn't seem to trigger the agro range while in the middle of switching stances. Keep in mind you still have to be quick with the shot because the agro will kick in shortly after aiming. Same goes for the bow hunting deer, you can crouch to get close and once you stand up there is a out a 1-2sec delay before the deer flees but it's enough time to get a full draw on the bow
You can see me do this exact thing in my interloper walkthrough. A good tip!
Dang that sounds almost exactly like how it works in Call of the Wild too loo
The bedroll trick is absolute genius- I obviously realized you could see the outlines of furniture in it, but I never thought to use that to get around inside. An uncomfortable amount of my lantern oil, fire-making materials, and TIME have been wasted just moving around and finding stuff in my bases at night. Literally just saved me so many matches 😅
I’d be carful about restarting the quartering or harvesting just like with chopping wood it automatically takes the % down of your blade. For example 4 one hour harvests take 4 times as much wear and tear as just one 4 hour interval to get it all done in one go but these are great tips !
Yeah that sounds about right, kind of annoying that’s how the game works.
Other tactic to scare wolves: if you don't have a torch/bengal, or a weapon like the revolver, use a rock as a last resort. A head-shot with a rock also scares them.
It's actually a lot more than a last resort. Using a rock is actually better than a revolver for self defense. Using a revolver on a charging wolf won't scare it so you need two shots to secure the kill. However a single rock hitting the wolf on the head (a fairly easy task mid charge) will always scare a wolf long enough to break the charge. It doesn't last long enough to break agro entirely but it's more than enough to break a struggle.
A thing or tip I often use is then you are in a dark room, take your stormlatern and only let the ignitionanimation play, not completing it. You can use the 2 bright "sparks" from the latern to see there you are in the room. I often use it when I'm low on lampfuel
An easier method for tip #9
Just hold space briefly and your mouse will show up in the centre of where your gun is aiming and this can be used in a tricky situation when you need to hit your target
Or just stick a lil blob of blue tack in the centre of your screen.
@@myview5840 Thats genius, get this man a harvard degree
Knowing that I can start and stop quartering is huge. I never realized that and have had quite a few close calls as a result. Thanks!
No other TLD content creator has taught me more about the game than you. Awesome stuff as always! The new profile pic looks very nice also.
I've only known about Zak for 2 months, but i've learned more from him than I have from playing the game for a year and a half.
+1 -- diggin' the new avatar, Zak! ☻ Cheers and thanks for more great TLD content, Interloper.
@@Chris_Rybowski Same! So glad I stumbled across his videos!
My best tip is to always keep coal in your inventory. It's the only thing that can get a fire hot enough to warm you up in the coldest weather, and each lump burns for an hour.
Master level knowledge 😎 Also you can also shelter your campfire by standing in front of it to protect it from the wind... No need to lose 20 minutes left from boiling your water or harvesting that last bit of meat from a carcass when the wind picks up in the middle of your harvest.
6.5k Hours ingame but the Flaregun trick was new to me. :) Thx A Tip of mine: When harvesting a bear with for example 32.6 Kg go up to harvest 32.5 Kg and then go back to 0.01 Kg. So you can harvest 100g pieces over and over. With this method you have maximum time control and you are able to boost your cooking skill superquick. It took a lot of wood but i have managed to lvl.5 at day 5. Works best at the HydroDamm Another Tip .. if you are at lvl.5 cooking you can eat everything except raw meat. Still the 0% Food can be eaten by leftclick and Enter. TLD is the best survival ever.!!
I always spam the reload button when shooting a flare, Im proud of myself for that lol
Thank you for this video. As a founder of the game I thought I knew a lot but you taught me a couple new tricks
I'm a 2K hr player and only knew/discovered half of these, thanks for giving me the other 50%, great content and clearly explained.
Only recently discovered this channel - I think you single-handedly sold this game for me.
I am pretty sure I have over a few thousand hours in TLD over the years and I still didnt know a few of these tricks, thx zak!
WOW I have seen a lot of tips an trick video's ( lot of yours) an these I have not seen so thanks a ton, great ones.
I went in expected to see tired information I knew already, instead I was impressed from beginning to end. The clothing harvesting trick is a gamechanger for me, previously I would leave a chair and break it down by hand, canceling last second. Thanks for the new tool 💪👍
well thats another great tip if you dont want to risk accidentally complete the harvest xD
Every time you upload I’m motivated to continue my stalker run. Great videos, quality has increased greatly. Good vid
And i want to start an interloper :D
I've gone from pilgrim only to interloper with no intermediate steps because of Zak, and the game is sooooo much better now.
Hinterland need to sponsor this dude.
@@davidjpeacock Zak is definitely on the Hinterland radar. He deserves it for excellent content and being a stellar dude in this community. ☻
@@friedmandesigns hear, hear!
Not just the content which is indeed stellar, but actually replying to his commenters and being so kind in his interactions.
Wholesome stuff.
When it comes to the waterfall part I don't know why I never thought of that. I got completely soaked going through the tunnels in Ash Canyon.
Maybe it cause during moments of stress we overthink ? I died at day 245 in Stalker. From being electrocuted…..

Best TLD tips right here on this channel.
Number 10 is the only one I knew haha, I did chase wolfs off by running at them with light source but did it on accident lol. Great video love your content!
Madly running at hungry wolves on accident and scaring them away takes guts, man...or accidental keyboard/gamepad pressing. Either way, proper respect. ☻
New logo looks very nice also great video, thank you
I usually watch these tip videos mostly to giggle to myself when I happen to know them all, but this was surprisingly insightful. From the 10 of these I really knew about 2 and kind of guestimated maybe 3 more. Funnily enough the torch charge I figured by a complete accident when I got once fed up with being assaulted by about 6 of them in the muskeg, so I just charged them while yelling IRL in my seat like a madman. and upon attempting to science it has a chance of working even against a bear! Though out of 40 or so attempts it worked 3 times, so I would never recommend doing it on purpose, more like desperate ditch effort when you are about to die.
Oh the cabin fever one is good
Watching this video is a win-win. Either you learn a few tips, or you get bragging rights that you knew them xD
I didn't know all 10. Wow. I'm impressed.
I actually sat with my mouth open wide in disbelief at the waterfall trick. What an amazing hack. Thank you.
Quite a few i didn't know yet in here, thank you :) The one where you use carcass as cover to make a fire is a game changer for me.
Wow 3k+ hrs, mostly in Loper, and still didn't know most of these, excellently done sir!
Dude I literally watched it with attitude like "eh surely it's nothing that I don't know another *use a torch to start a fire not a match* but just wanna hear a bit more of that Zak's relaxing voicelines" but that have a plenty surprisingly useful one's like the one about windprot carcasses (shame that I never payed attention) , the one with a torch even tho it kinda like bug , pretty same as cooking small meat abuse.
Speaking of jerrycans donno why is it really useful cos cooking fish gives you new pack of fuel for lanterns anyways soooo why someone even need the cans ?
And about quartering actually is it not makes your tool lose more % while stop-start-stop-start ? Even if so it could be useful anyways but I should test it tho now
Thank you! Jerry Cans weigh less than the packs you get, but have little purpose beyond it. On my long runs I refill them just to make refilling lanterns easier upon returning to the base. Quartering may result in more %tool use, but can also result in more leveling up up the harvesting skill. It can be useful when the kill happened in the open, so you can move the stuff elsewhere.
The lantern trick makes sense. You would probably carry the lantern as low as possible in real life, until you want to illuminate something above you.
not in a million years would i have assumed that you could harvest the oil from the fish, thats so cool
Wow and I thought I knew it all!
Wow, nice. I am gonna try that campfire/revolver gimmick. 😄
Thank you man 👍
Good to see you still pumping out content 👍
More please! The editing is great, tips are useful and script is concise. Great work!
TLD is a beautiful strategy game. You can’t survive without having strategy, or rather you can but it doesn’t work long term
Another superb video! Thanks as always Zak 👌👌👌
Very good video
Wow, nice tips. I'm not that far into the game yet. That waterfall tip with the torch will really come in handy.
Interesting stuff. I knew some of it but the others were new.
Great tips Zak! Particularly like the Jerry Can and Cabin Fever tips. Nice!
I've got over 500 hours in, and man there is so much good info in here! Never knew that about quartering or the waterfall, good stuff mate! Subscribed!
Love the new profile picture. I feel that the video quality has also been improving a lot!
All of these so creative it makes me laugh of how funny they are. Amazing video.
Dude, these were some great tips. I can tell that all of them came from you actually playing the game a lot, rather than just reading from a wiki.
10/10, man.
Great video. I'll add a couple tips:
1) Against an approaching black wolf you can hold a lit torch and as the wolf gets closer switch to holding a rock - press 2 - (which will drop the lit torch at your feet) and aim the rock at the wolf. The wolf will run away 100% of the time after running towards you.
2)You can take a mountaineering rope that is tied to a rock (from the top of the rope where it is tied to the rock).
Love your vids, love your content! tysm
Not sure if you're covered this previously but you can also consistently scare wolves off by dropping a torch between you and the wolf and aiming a stone at them. They will run away every time.
Yes, this is covered in all my walkthroughs and in my wolf tutorial:
ruclips.net/video/8VZi981Hymg/видео.html
Thank you, though! The tip included in this video is the rarest scare tactic, so I didnt mention the others :)
@@Zaknafein Great stuff by the way. I'm watching all your vids now!
Zak covering this has saved Astrid's and my lives countless times over. Though it still gives me a bit of The Fear each and every time. ☻
I'm playing for 3 years and your clip surprised me. Thank you for tips
Great tips. I didn't know the majority at all.
Hey, great list, thanks for sharing! I genuinely didn't know most of these tips, and I can think of several times where they would have been really handy while playing.
That's a good tip, and detail. Stopping when looting. over hours of IRL gameplay it matters a lot! all such things, in a survival game as unforgiving as this, can save you a lot of resources.
The flare run thing works best if you run close but not directly at them. Hell, you don't even need to run. If there are loads of wolves around pop a flare and just walk to where ever you need to go. They always get spooked, no need to run at them because their fear might be delayed and they'll attack before you can startle them.
Just stumbled across your channel and now I’m annoyed I haven’t seen it sooner! Awesome content buddy!
4:52 “wait out that blizzard by messing with your clothes” 😂 I didn’t know this. I would do things like break down useless crates or tables and harvesting curtains.
Have been playing the The Long Dark consistently for 6+ years and just learned these 10 things! Thank you! ❤️
Very informative as always! Also some of your RUclips viewers ended up in Wonz’s stream today, so next time you’re there remind me to give you a referral bonus 😂
Great video mate. Keep up the good work.
LAMP OIL FROM FISHING... I honestly didn't know that but it makes so much sense!
Going into this i thought id already know them but you sure did surprise me. Well done and a well a fantastic video
These are great! Especially that waterfall tip. :)
I never knew about the jerry can! Thank you!
I just discovered something new that I didn't know about. If you have several cups of tea or coffee you can place them on a bench right next to an own and they will all warm up simultaneously when you start a fire. That's pretty neat.
Very good tips, #3 was best. Great video 💯 thanks a lot mate
A bonus tip for navigating in dark (looking for bed), I might not be the first to use it: if you have the Lantern with saved just a fraction of fuel(or more) - start lighting it and after the first two clicks release the button. This way you get two very brief flashes but still might be enough if you are stuck somewhere in familiar indoor space. It doesn’t work perfectly ‘cos before animation of flashing lantern sparks the game levels the POV in middle/vertically moves your POV up or down, so if you are stuck in some wall - might need to step back few steppes to get more familiar picture ;)
I just use my matches
make wolves follow you, and bring him to a deer, crouch and if you are far enouggh the wolf will chase the deer, then just scare him by rising a stone (no need to throw it)
These tips are INCREADIBLY usefull. Thank you
Good job! Philter fits perfectly into the atmosphere.
I like this type of video a lot! You should make this a series.
Cabin fever is a dumb mechanic imo, like "Oh boi there's a heavy blizzard and wolves outside so i shouldn't go out there...........but i'm getting kinda bored indoor~"
Ps:I think we should have an option to hang the storm lantern on our body to use other tools while having a light
Wow, I've been playing TLD for years and every single one of these was new to me. My longest running world is a 430+ day Interloper world and some of these might help me get to the big 5-0-0!
Dang, I had already found out about most of these insights on my own and only two of these tips were new to me - but the longest I survived was for sixty-one days. Kinda ironic
Man, I can't believe you managed to teach me things about the game again. Some of them are really minor, and qi knew (or thought about) but all of them are pretty smart. Anyway this game has really way more than meet the eye, and it's always a pleasure to go back at it.
the waterfall trick sounds way too cheaty it kind of ruins the immersion.. but torch thingy is kind of acceptable considering you could cover it with your body to prevent it from being soaked.. kind of xD
Actually realized a lot of these while playing the game but never knew these tips would actually work. Ah also, I tried reloading my flare gun as soon as I launched a flare but it somehow still reloads slowly
I think they should fix some of these tricks. For example, you shouldn't be able to to use the placement ability to keep a torch lit through a waterfall. Nor should you be able to keep your gear dry unless you have a waterproof hide or the add some kind of waterproof dry bag. Same issue with despawning jerry cans (it shouldn't), using clothes to pass time, etc.
It's clever to find these tricks but they really are things that should be fixed when discovered.
It reminds me of the gun running in the old CounterStrike. It was fun as hell but obviously they fixed it.
I think it's assumed your backpack is waterproof.
Yeah, some are pure exploit.
Cool tips and nice song choice for the video
Thank you, Zack :)
great tips these! thanks
A very good video in all aspects.
Thanks
These are really good tips. I've played for quite some time and learned a lot.
It's absolutely brilliant, I love it!
Thought I knew all))) thanks for awesome tips!
I’ve recently gotten back into TLD and these are all very helpful. Thankyou
now these are some quality tips, thank you sir!
Great tips mate, many thanks.
Really interesting, thanks! I know this game from many years (I downloaded the alpha or beta version on my pc .. It was before the release of the game on Xbox, where I play now) but I never thought about these triks! Thanks!
oh, this is an actually good video of good tips. didnt expect it
Damn i didnt know lots of them! Nice job! Btw in case someone didnt know it - if a wolf or bear blocks your way you can draw their attention by throwing a rock in that direction
haha good, I knew these methods and while watching so I thought it would be worth mentioning the scan bedroll but tip 10 came. As for the fever cabin, go fishing or sleep in the cave its best tip
I'm feeling special for finding out tip #10 by myself. Still can't play above voyageur tho lol
I've got a 220 day(+) Pilgrim save I load just for the relaxation of wandering about without needing torch / weapon-aiming strats for wolfie-bois, and having an absolutely ridiculous pile of candy bars, beef jerky, ketchup chips and Salty Crackers on the counter of Mystery Lake's Camp Office. ☻
Wow. The waterfall and Jerry can tips are incredible! That stamina one while looting too! My tip to help with aim is the long trusted put a little bit of blue tack on the screen over the target
