    I have a question: do these forms work in a real fighting application? I like the concept of these forms and finding out what the purposes are for the movements, but all the movements are meant for a specific kind of attack or defense, which makes it choreographed if you're trying to learn the function of the movements. In a fight, your opponent may not do what is shown in the video, so how well would this translate to a combat situation?

    • @shaolintempleyunnan
      @shaolintempleyunnan  2 года назад +17

      Yes, the movements look choreographed to a novice but not to a master. The more you practice them you develop the ability to react without thinking. But to achieve that level you really must train. Many people think kung fu has no point because they never train to the level to have a point. Shaolin Kung Fu has been used for centuries on the battlefield before guns were invented and were extremely useful. So you see my friend, in order to understand the applications and be useful to you, you must practice for many hours.

    • @conarykao9732
      @conarykao9732 2 года назад +1

      @@shaolintempleyunnan Of course, practice is very important. But do you think that gung fu should keep forms like these or learn to train the techniques on the dummies, pads, or bags? Like Muay Thai doesn't revolve around forms, but instead focuses on drilling techniques in sparring situations and on equipment. There are many gung fu people who perform the movements in the form, but they don't know the meaning of it, so they lack any realism and look like they're only performing a dance. I also think that forms are a little bit outdated because they were served either as a way to remember the movements (when nothing could be recorded) or as a way to disguise martial arts practices (similar to something like Capoeira). Neither are needed today, as people can practice martial arts freely. What do you think?

    • @shaolintempleyunnan
      @shaolintempleyunnan  2 года назад +7

      @@conarykao9732 My friend, those techniques you call Muay Thai and sparring all derive from Shaolin Kung Fu. You want to say that the egg is better than the chicken. The forms are not outdated but the people lack practice and understanding on how to practice. Sure, are many people who cannot train properly or do not understand the meaning of the movements. You are saying the following: let's take out the alphabet because we all can jump directly to the university. It is the same concept. What is your kung fu expertise?

    • @conarykao9732
      @conarykao9732 2 года назад

      @@shaolintempleyunnan I'm not saying anything about the techniques themselves or where they come from, I understand all techniques can work if you drill them in a realistic sense regardless of where they're from. What I'm mentioning is the training methods themselves. Why continue to do forms like most gung fu schools do when there is an alternative in practicing the techniques in the forms in a more realistic sense instead of rehearsing for choreographed attacks. That's my question.
      I'm not saying what you interpreted at all. The alphabet is a necessity to use in all things you learn. Forms are not necessities any longer to become a proficient martial artist. Of course, one benefit is they keep you in shape and they're just overall fun to do, but in terms of combat, they serve little purpose now. Very different from the alphabet, which we need to use in everything else. Why not take the techniques from the forms and practice them in a more realistic manner? Because your opponent will not always attack you the way the form anticipates it will. You learn an offense or defense to one attack through forms. You learn to apply them to more situations by learning the technique on equipment and then practicing it in sparring, with a real opponent in a non-choreographed manner.
      I've practiced wushu for just about 10 years. I'm not expecting my knowledge of the art to surpass yours, I'm only trying to have a discussion with my thoughts on how to progress gung fu. All things need to evolve and adapt, and gung fu is no different. Relying on past accomplishments such as "it used to work in war before guns" isn't efficient nor sensible. If we want gung fu to be more known globally and have a better reputation, we need to change something.

I'm not expecting my knowledge of the art to surpass yours, I'm only trying to have a discussion with my thoughts on how to progress gung fu. " Return to us to discuss in 30 years when you match our expertise and only then you will maybe be able to understand the meaning of Kung Fu. You do not want to have a discussion but you impose your own thoughts about something you really cannot understand. Kung Fu comes from China and its traditional culture. As much as you would like you cannot erase its roots and change to adapt to suit western culture and mindset. It will not and we are not willing to change it to match any culture but the Chinese Traditional Culture. If you have other thoughts you are welcome to train in any style you wish but here at the Shaolin Temple we will not alter our heritage to suit any nation on earth and its progress believes. To properly understand Shaolin culture you have to have culture and to study Chinese and Buddhist culture, understand Confucianism, the book of changes, the 5 elements, Yin and Yang, and many more. As long as your thoughts are as such, there is no further discussion. Educate yourself, practice more and then express your opinion.

    Hello shifu i have a question that bodhidharma is the creater of kungfu right? So many people say kung fu is originated from india is it true ? And also indians say that kungfu is a form of kalaripayttu kalaripayttu is a india martial arts what you think about that and plz reply

      Kung Fu existed in China long before Bodhidharma arrived in China. Meihua Quan, the oldest style of Kung Fu has about 4000 years of culture. Bodhidharma is the one mentioned for the Shaolin Kung Fu, dating 1533 years ago. There are people who are free to say whatever they like but the reality is different. I am not familiar with Indian Kung Fu. We only know of Yoga.

      All bodhidharma did was create chan or zen Buddhism as we know it today as well as help the monks at shaolin develop 18 lohan qi gong which later was developed into fighting methods from other kung fu systems who interchanged knowledge of martial arts with the monks. That's why so many shaolin forms have family versions in Henan
