I was completely new to Warhammer when I signed up for the Square Based Online Tournament and it has been awesome, had 3 games so far and I have learned alot and enjoyed the beginner loses alot more than I thought I would. Would reccomend to anyone completely new to Warhammer aswell, cheers for running the tournament lads.
TOW has gotten me back into Warhammer after many years out - recreating my 5th-6th Edition Empire army from mostly cheap 'trash' models from eBay has kept me occupied for most of 2024... The comments about scarcity being the mother of invention are bang on the money... my army isn't so much 'what do I want' as 'what can I build out of this?!' 2 tubs of paint stripper later, it's been fun! Now I just need to get some games in around all the IRL responsibilities I didn't have when I was a key timer! (South Wales if anyone's out there!)
I've recently taken up TOW mainly because the guys in my 'Shed group' )Yes, we play in a shed, lol), started. Because of limited TOW stocks globally, and because they started before me, I found myself rebuilding my 7th (and possibly earlier) Tomb Kings army from way back when..... but with the addition of a Bone Dragon (or 2 ;) ). I played my first full game against Wood Elfses..... Loved it!! It ended in a draw, but, tbh, neither of us cared. The game had outrageous 'swings and arrows' moments. Brilliant. I haven't gotten this excited about a minis game for years.... (and I started playing.. before mobile phones were a thing!!! - Old salt for sure ;) ) What's bonkers and fabulous is that no matter the amount of rules - nobody really complains, and, sporting behaviour just comes naturally. It's like a tabletop adventure book (Google it if you don't know what they were, lol)... you have no idea where the game will end, lol. Love it.

I think TOW has prodded people into playing again and a lot of us are previous Warhammers players just grateful to have a new and shiny game to play with our old models. Cashing in on nostalgia? Love the report against the gun line. This is exactly my experience. I lost my high price on a dragon turn 2 to multiple cannonades (ouch), but the rest my army was MSUs so it all worked out. I think a big bad baddy plus strong MSUs is really hard to counter. Also bring Hugo to talk about High Elves. We never get enough of this magnificent fella
Hi Square Based- Had my first game with my beloved 2k Troll Horde army! They were fighting orcs grand army so the narrative was revenge based civil war for my orc witch 'Slagga' (ogdruz AOW proxy)'s banishment for being too weird. Was a really fun game and quite even for most of it! I managed to secure the win in the end. Was so fun using the hag who smothered 7 black orcs then CUT DOWN the fleeing ones 😂 a great and flavourful army and your deep dive gave me some good ideas and a direction of how to play, so I thank you. 😊
My local club doesn't use the rule of 3, the Dwarven gyro swarm isn't an issue, nor is the 9 solo dragonogre swarm, all because we have 3 bretonnia players. The horn is a rather impressive counter to gyros. And while the Lance is visually appealing, running knights in a rank counters the solo unit spam.
Regarding the dwarven gyro swarm not being a problem; Do you mean that no one uses it or that someone tried putting 15 gyros on the table and kept losing 50% of their games?

If I could remove any word from the gamer lexicon, it would certainly be "meta." It skews perceptions and play experiences of local gaming groups, and encourages people to play what is designed to win at top tables which local players will never see, instead of the cool thing that would enrich local player experience. This is the very thing that took Magic from buying some packs and playing to dropping hundreds on a deck just to survive on a Friday night. It feeds consumerism and corporate greed, things which I know you are against.
The word meta triggers me because it is so miss used. Maybe it is so misused it has just gained a new meaning. It used to mean 'the game outside the game'. Playing something that is just optimal math is not meta it is just brining a strait forward strong list. Playing a meta is about playing in a way that would be suboptimal with no outside the game knowledge. But when you use the outside of game knowledge it can be good. Like if the optimal way to play the game is to run hordes, a meta pick could be a list that is anti horde but will loose to non hordes.
Show idea. Have a section every week where ppl send in max 3 pics of their completed army (1 has to be full army shot) in the hope of getting your approval. Rate them between nice and giving them a soon to be coveted "square based star". Make the segment 3 mins long.. cut down the entries so you only show ones you like and make sure only 1 of you has seen them b4 show. Then pick an army of the week/month/year for some sort of prize. For me the perfect army would be beautiful and original
I feel "really restricted" by the rule of 3 meaning I need to take 3 cannon and 3 boltthower at 2k for dwarves rather than the dwarf books restriction of 3 WM per 1000pts. 6 cannon won't make dwarves good tho Also might make dragons less dominant

Woodelves with Treeman Ancient, Level 4 Mage with lore Familie and on Horse in Glade Rider Skirmishers for reserve move, 3x sisters: 4 times Vortex and staying out of range from the enemie mage, so he cant dispell them. Without rule of 3 you can take 6-7 sister units

If a Doomdiver is targeting a lone monster of some sort such that the 3" template does not cover the entire monster base but the central hole is over the monster base does the owning player have to roll a 4+ "chance to hit / partial" before the strength 8 to wound roll is made or does the central whole hit regardless of partial coverage of the rest of the 3" template
Page 224 of the Big Blue Book (a.k.a. the rule book): “A single model whose base lies underneath the central hole of the blast template is struck by the projectile and suffers a hit with higher strength and ARMOUR piercing characteristics, as shown in brackets on the war machine’s profile.” You notice that there is no requirement for a single model, such as a dragon on a very long, rectangular base, to be completely covered by a small, round template; otherwise, a catapult would never be able to hit the dragon. So, only the center hole needs to be over the base. In fact, the entire center hole is not required to be over the base; only a part of the center hole needs to be over the base, because page 95 of the BBB says, “A model whose base lies completely underneath a template, or PARTIALLY UNDERNEATH the CENTER HOLE of a blast template is HIT AUTOMATICALLY.” I hope this satisfies. Speaking of people continuing to learn the game this many months after release, my friend and I are trying to learn the game together, and while I have the greater accumulated knowledge, we both find ourselves constantly having to stop and reference so many different chapters of the core book and then checking all the USRs, maybe then realizing it's an army specific rule. Point is: how do we (the royal we) make the referencing more streamlined (versus simplifying the game itself)? Cheers!

I've been looking at the TSN tournaments but they seem to be so much more expensive than other tournaments. What does TSN do that justifies a £60 admission verses other places like The Outpost and Element Games with their about £20 admission?
He posted a couple of weeks ago in the old world discord temple cities. They are custom, staggered 2 'ranks' so they can all see forward and units can see through the tray
What sucks about the rule of 3 is a lot of the thematic but interesting armies people can run and could run in past editions of whfb, can't be run. We can't run an entirely mounted Dark Elf cavalry army unless it is massively diversified. We can't run massive horde armies of a great many mid sized units - I want to be able to run 8 or 9 units of Night Gobbos or Gnoblars for examp0le, many people would love that again. Massed chariots outside of units and differing chariot types, can't do it because rule of 3 wipes that out. Yes, competitive mindedly there is the msu thing that can happen, but msu can also be zoned out with bigger units. One of the fun parts of whfb has always been finding counters to how people play and design lists even if its' msu based, there's alot of counters so long as you aren't just pigeon holing yourself into a local meta.
after running empire at 2 tournaments and going 3,1,1 and 3,2 - running 3 cannons and a stank, i can confirm cannons aren't enough. maybe against Dragons/Flying characters with a ward or regen but then they have a 2+5++5+++ your not doing anything to them.
Yah, as an Orcs & Goblins player, I can't share a positive thing about Rule-of-3. The idea that I shouldn't be allowed to bring a mob of choppa boys, arrer boys, savage orc boys AND Big Uns because that would be spammy / unbalanced ... yeah, no chance. How am I supposed to build a Troll Horde with max three Trolls? Same with some other armies aswell ofcourse, Skaven with max 3 clan rats, especially now that slaves no longer exist? It just punishes horde armies and kills fluffy list building.
I didn't realise the old world had the rule of three, guess my pure night goblin army is now illegal due to having 2 units with spears and 2 units with bows. I wouldn't have a problem with the rule if core units were exempt. But this is just silly, think about the empire, 4 units of state troops would be illegal, whilst 3 units of state troops and 1 unit of veterans is legal despite being the same models.
@@DMKA94 as I understand it, it’s not a set rule by way of the game rules themselves but rather one that is put in place for some events with the intended aim of preventing people from spamming notably powerful units. The limitations in place under the game rules themselves will be as represented in the rule books etc, eg “X number of X unit per 1000pts”. Hope this helps 🙂
If you want to livestream events and need more hands on deck you could try to contact some of the big total war streamers for collaboration a few UK based streamers whonreally dig warhammer and the old world.
3 cannons wont kill a chaos dragon... dragon gonna be deployed after the cannons, so when you have 2 pieces of wood placed somewhere in the middle of the map, you can hide the dragon. Then there is one round in wich the dragon moves up, where you can shoot and afterwards he is gonna be in meele all the time... sorry, but no realistic chance to kill a dragon with cannons against a player that knows how to play. And besides cannons there is not much in the empire rooster that can keep up with a dragon, even a general on gryfons will get oneshootet from a dragon 😊
About somebody using Pillar of Fire through one of their own units to guarantee hitting an enemy unit, there's a growing wedge of ppl not interpreting vortex movement that way. The spell description says it moves d6 or whatever, and it generates spell effects. Then, the rules describe a second move finding a legal placement for the template so it isnt just laying on top of fragile models. This second move may not be generating spell effects. Until it gets faq'd, you just kind of have to decide if they intended to let people kill their own models to guarantee hits on an enemy or if the d6 movement should really be turning into like 14 inches of destruction and character sniping simply because it would be rude to set the template down on top of a model.
that's an interesting read of things for sure. However not how it's worked before on similar things (fantatics, Purple Sun, etc)... so probably not what JTY was thinking
@SquareBasedOldWorld Yea, Fanatic movement has a blanket statement on dealing damage when it impacts a unit. Unfortunately, the Vortex movement is split up into 2 spots; the spell description and then the vortex rules on page 107(ish) of the book that says if it ends movement on a model then continue to move it (proceed after an interruption) until it is no longer on any models. It clearly describes ending the movement from the spell description to begin a second move. I'm hungry for a FAQ on this one, to be honest, hah. This was the ruling in the Alamo Memorial Day GT and will likely be the ruling for the Lone Star Open and Texas Open as well; all with different TO's I believe.
He did claim that on an otherwise very good interview on barefoot miniatures. Don't think he'd actually been playing it though. Seemed like a very nice bloke who is clearly very good at playing dwarfs!

Loving your weekly podcasts, but just a suggestion, Val tends to interrupt Rob and then goes on a tangent. There's been several times when I was really interested in listening to what Rob has to say but he never ever got to say it..
It is useful to bring up 40k at times, like in this episode when we had an explanation of how 40k bits were utilized in the construction of orc chariots. It seems reasonable to compare how Old World tournaments/ release schedules/ support for the game by GW compare with 40k, etc. It is also fair to say that there would be no Old World release if it were not for 40k keeping GW alive for many years. Perhaps, someone on this podcast enjoys saying that Old World is much more fun than 40k. He has the right to say whatever the heck he desires on HIS podcast. -just a friendly counter opinion 😄

Game is filled with broken armies that are un-fun to face, and this is coming from someone who has made it to the podium in all of my tournaments. Broken builds dominate the game, and if anyone thinks its not broken they just havent played enough/lack Old World experience. Game is also going to die before it starts if GW cant provide the very basics needed to play the game, i.e- THE ACTUAL MODELS!
While we are talking about comp, why haven't folk tried out allowing allies? Feels ab it odd that we are keeping the early (premetive?) comp measures for MSU lists and allied forces while not comping any of the things that are clearly overturned (dragons, screams, magic spam). Can't we try a bit more of the game with the full composition rules intact to see whats too far?

Rule of three prevents the fourth bolt thrower, and hurts taking chariots. Are they problems that need solving?
The Wood Elves are there, but they keep rolling nat 20’s on the stealth roll, so you can’t see them.

They are custom, staggered 2 'ranks' so they can all see forward and units can see through the tray

What sucks about the rule of 3 is a lot of the thematic but interesting armies people can run and could run in past editions of whfb, can't be run. We can't run an entirely mounted Dark Elf cavalry army unless it is massively diversified. We can't run massive horde armies of a great many mid sized units - I want to be able to run 8 or 9 units of Night Gobbos or Gnoblars for examp0le, many people would love that again. Massed chariots outside of units and differing chariot types, can't do it because rule of 3 wipes that out. Yes, competitive mindedly there is the msu thing that can happen, but msu can also be zoned out with bigger units. One of the fun parts of whfb has always been finding counters to how people play and design lists even if its' msu based, there's alot of counters so long as you aren't just pigeon holing yourself into a local meta.
Bowling shirts make the most sense, 👍because it is more classy than a t-shirt, and folks don’t need ANOTHER effing T-SHIRT!
after running empire at 2 tournaments and going 3,1,1 and 3,2 - running 3 cannons and a stank, i can confirm cannons aren't enough. maybe against Dragons/Flying characters with a ward or regen but then they have a 2+5++5+++ your not doing anything to them.

Yah, as an Orcs & Goblins player, I can't share a positive thing about Rule-of-3. The idea that I shouldn't be allowed to bring a mob of choppa boys, arrer boys, savage orc boys AND Big Uns because that would be spammy / unbalanced ... yeah, no chance. How am I supposed to build a Troll Horde with max three Trolls? Same with some other armies aswell ofcourse, Skaven with max 3 clan rats, especially now that slaves no longer exist? It just punishes horde armies and kills fluffy list building.
I didn't realise the old world had the rule of three, guess my pure night goblin army is now illegal due to having 2 units with spears and 2 units with bows.
I wouldn't have a problem with the rule if core units were exempt. But this is just silly, think about the empire, 4 units of state troops would be illegal, whilst 3 units of state troops and 1 unit of veterans is legal despite being the same models.
@@DMKA94 as I understand it, it’s not a set rule by way of the game rules themselves but rather one that is put in place for some events with the intended aim of preventing people from spamming notably powerful units.
The limitations in place under the game rules themselves will be as represented in the rule books etc, eg “X number of X unit per 1000pts”. Hope this helps 🙂
If you want to livestream events and need more hands on deck you could try to contact some of the big total war streamers for collaboration a few UK based streamers whonreally dig warhammer and the old world.
3 cannons wont kill a chaos dragon... dragon gonna be deployed after the cannons, so when you have 2 pieces of wood placed somewhere in the middle of the map, you can hide the dragon. Then there is one round in wich the dragon moves up, where you can shoot and afterwards he is gonna be in meele all the time... sorry, but no realistic chance to kill a dragon with cannons against a player that knows how to play. And besides cannons there is not much in the empire rooster that can keep up with a dragon, even a general on gryfons will get oneshootet from a dragon 😊

About somebody using Pillar of Fire through one of their own units to guarantee hitting an enemy unit, there's a growing wedge of ppl not interpreting vortex movement that way.
The spell description says it moves d6 or whatever, and it generates spell effects. Then, the rules describe a second move finding a legal placement for the template so it isnt just laying on top of fragile models. This second move may not be generating spell effects.
Until it gets faq'd, you just kind of have to decide if they intended to let people kill their own models to guarantee hits on an enemy or if the d6 movement should really be turning into like 14 inches of destruction and character sniping simply because it would be rude to set the template down on top of a model.
that's an interesting read of things for sure. However not how it's worked before on similar things (fantatics, Purple Sun, etc)... so probably not what JTY was thinking
@SquareBasedOldWorld Yea, Fanatic movement has a blanket statement on dealing damage when it impacts a unit. Unfortunately, the Vortex movement is split up into 2 spots; the spell description and then the vortex rules on page 107(ish) of the book that says if it ends movement on a model then continue to move it (proceed after an interruption) until it is no longer on any models.
It clearly describes ending the movement from the spell description to begin a second move. I'm hungry for a FAQ on this one, to be honest, hah. This was the ruling in the Alamo Memorial Day GT and will likely be the ruling for the Lone Star Open and Texas Open as well; all with different TO's I believe.

Loving your weekly podcasts, but just a suggestion, Val tends to interrupt Rob and then goes on a tangent. There's been several times when I was really interested in listening to what Rob has to say but he never ever got to say it..

It is useful to bring up 40k at times, like in this episode when we had an explanation of how 40k bits were utilized in the construction of orc chariots. It seems reasonable to compare how Old World tournaments/ release schedules/ support for the game by GW compare with 40k, etc.
It is also fair to say that there would be no Old World release if it were not for 40k keeping GW alive for many years.
Perhaps, someone on this podcast enjoys saying that Old World is much more fun than 40k. He has the right to say whatever the heck he desires on HIS podcast.

Game is filled with broken armies that are un-fun to face, and this is coming from someone who has made it to the podium in all of my tournaments.
Broken builds dominate the game, and if anyone thinks its not broken they just havent played enough/lack Old World experience.
Game is also going to die before it starts if GW cant provide the very basics needed to play the game, i.e- THE ACTUAL MODELS!

While we are talking about comp, why haven't folk tried out allowing allies? Feels ab it odd that we are keeping the early (premetive?) comp measures for MSU lists and allied forces while not comping any of the things that are clearly overturned (dragons, screams, magic spam). Can't we try a bit more of the game with the full composition rules intact to see whats too far?
