Hey everyone! Let me know if you like the format of this video! If you dig it I might do a series like this "Which Plant Makes the Best X" and could do Bacon, Cheese Sauce etc! Thanks!
The very first time I bought jackfruit, I didn't know there were different kinds. I bought the one in syrup and made a BBQ sandwich with that. It tasted like a BBQ and pineapple sandwich which was pretty good. Lol
Kinda surprised you didn't include Soy Curls in this test. They make an excellent BBQ sandwich. I bet a mixture of Soy Curls and King Oyster would be best overall
Great video again :) Glad that I had the opportunity to learn english to find this awesome content. Fun fact, as I'm brazilian, it's funny to me that you used a can for the jackfruit, in here we can find a jackfruit tree on the street so the cost will be closed to zero considering the sauces and because jackfruit is so big, you can make a lot of pulled pork. Someone has even made a website so people can report where some jackfruit trees are locale so it can find easily
Yeah, jackfruit is pretty miraculous. I’ve been making pulled pork with it for my family for several years. I sauté it with the seasonings and vegetable stock until most of the liquid is gone and then I slowly dehydrate it in the oven to give it the texture. It also makes great ribs added to seitan@!
You should try enoki mushrooms, no shredding needed, since they are already strands, usually i cut them up. They are my favorite for pulled pork like dishes
Just made the tofu version for me and my wife. Was missing ginger for the rub, so we had Moscow Mules with it. Came out awesome, just like every other recipe of yours we've tried! Thanks again!
Absolutely love this video. I have a few ideas! First, it would be awesome if you could show how easy it is to grow your own blue oyster mushrooms--they don't need much sunlight and once you get the substrate it almost maintains itself. Also, the less packaging in the planet the better! Second, I like smoking them low and slow or adding liquid smoke! Third, I like using White BBQ Sauce sometimes: ¾ cup vegan mayonnaise 2 tablespoons cider vinegar 2 teaspoons sugar ½ teaspoon prepared horseradish ½ teaspoon table salt ½ teaspoon ground black pepper ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
I enjoyed this video and the format. One additional thing that I would enjoy would be… Which one makes the best leftovers? Maybe not the mushrooms, because there wasn’t much, but which tasted better the next day? Thank you for your dedication to providing useful information. 😊
I recently discovered using carrots for BBQ and strongly recommend you do the same. Just julienne the carrots, char them on a griddle, and cook until tender with a dry rub and some sauce. I recommend using soy or liquid aminos early on when sauteing and some msg with the dry rub. These turn out great every time and a are a real crowd pleaser. I like mine with a runny egg and sweet goat cheese on top.
Loved this video style (three recipes in one? Yes!). I'd def try the tofu and jackfruit versions, but I'm not sure I would buy that expensive mushroom. 😬 Thanks!
Before you bake it, soak it in your rice paper bacon marinade to give it a pork flavor then once you rehydrate it thats when the bbq sauce comes in to play
All your versions look great, and I appreciate the comparison. I like soy curls for barbecue sandwich. The recipe I use has them cooked in a slow cooker in the sauce. I see you've used soy curls for carne asada and french dip sandwiches that sound amazing too.
I totally enjoyed watching how you broke down each ingredient and I especially loved that you told where you purchased the main ingredient so we didn't have to research for it on our own. Thank you.😊
Made a version of this with thinly sliced & sautéd portobellos and seasoned baked crumbled tofu "meat", then tossed them together with some BBQ sauce I made. Excellent!
@@TheeBurgerDude perfect also your cook book is amazing it arrived I think 1 week ago and the Mac Donald burger is soooo good but the doughnuts didn’t really work out 😂
What an excellent video presentation! Great work on the overall narration, video shots and breakdown of choices, flavor and prices! I'm anxious to check out many of your other postings on your site.
I would mix all three into one 😂 you get protein from the tofu, flavour from the mushrooms and texture from the jackfruit. I've tried this and I believe the combo is the bomb
OMG! Your videos always make my mouth water! I used to make those with Jackfruit after washing and pressing it really well, loved them! King Oyster mushrooms are indeed pricey! I am going to try what you did but I am going to use Portobello caps. I had a Portobello sandwich at Jersey Mikes the other day and it was THE BOMB! It was designed to be like a Philly but it was THE meatiest vegan sammie I've ever had and it was simply delicious! Thank you so much, love, love, love your cookbook and your channel!
I'm a big King Oyster fan and I second the recommendation that folks check their local Asian market. Mine has a wider selection of mushrooms than Whole Foods, and like half the price on Oyster and King Oyster. Also great for things like tvp chunks, rice paper, jackfruit, different kinds of tofu and bean curd sheets, and tons of other plant based staples
I just purchased a #10 restaurant size can (6lbs 1oz) off Amazon in the US for $10.54. I think that solves it for me. In general the jackfruit can be used for so many dishes you could eat off this can for a week and take some to work or your family.
Great video! The cost and lack of availability (well, outside the standard 3 types most US grocers card) of mushrooms is always tough considering how much they shrink. I wonder if there is a way to mitigate cost without actually growing them yourself.
I've made pulled pork substitute with the trumpet mushrooms and they were great! I think smaller ones do better than the larger ones, less "woody" if you know what I mean.
Omg ! Another marvelous recipe! Love every single video, I've been watching all of 'em back to back! Thank you so much!💚💚💚 Would you mind telling what's your camera? I laugh when you say you're nerd 😂 😍💪🌱 Much love! 💚
try it with chicken of the woods mushrooms as the name implies it tastes sorta like chicken if cooked the right way and you can find them allmost anywhere in the right conditions witch means thier free
I think you're better off microwaving than doing them in the oven. You're basically trying to dry them out, and microwaves have the unique ability to directly find water and turn it into steam. SO much faster and more efficient. If you really want to brown it a bit, try grilling it after microwaving.
Thank you so much for all your work for us. I do enjoy your videos. I was wondering if there was a reason I could not try soy curls for the "pork bbq". Thank you again, suzie
Hmm I’m gonna try mixing some of them together. Jackfruit is my favourite but I think mixing it with mushrooms might be quite nice. Or with tofu. Whatevs. 🤤
I tried Jackfruit last week, and it was amazing, so I went back to the Asian Market yesterday and bought different cans of Jackfruit to see which brand was the best,...well NONE of them have the SEEDS in it. So instead of having something like a pulled pork bbq sandwich, it was more like a super sweet pineapple pizza 😢 ~ Just because a jar of apple sauce has picture of an apple on the label, but we Know that there's not a whole apple inside...but not so with Jackfruit, so be carefully when you go to buy to just get the seeds that look identical to pulled more and not so darn sweet.
Hello Sir, I enjoyed the format. However, If I may offer a possible cost savings idea? Take 113g of dried chickpeas and make your own "tofu" That 113g will become 454g of tofu. It's the firmest of the non-soy tofus that I've made. That 113g of chickpeas cost me about $0.50USD plus some time.

Do you have any videos on how to make delicious ground pork? I would love to make Thai Larb or Laab or also some Vietnamese dishes that traditionally have ground pork. Any tips or recipes to reference would be highly recommended. I feel like this tofu treatment with pork flavors would probably be a good fit because of the moisture in the sauces that would be added. I would really love your expert opinion:)
After some misadventures in the past with pre-make jackfruit "meat" products (yuck!) I started using canned jack for a variety of purposes and I am very, very impressed! Excellent for tuna, fish filets, pork, and chicken salad variations. The flake and texture cannot be compared to even my beloved mushroom variants. I am actually interested in seeing if they can be "ground" for a beef patty for a potential burger. I would think those baked king oyster strands would do for a decent carne asada?
I tried my first can of jackfruit about a month ago, using your mock tuna salad recipe. It blew me away. 🤯 I had to order the can of jackfruit as I couldn't find any locally. $7 a can from Amazon. 😬 Now if I could just find a local source. And one more thing, YOU COULD HAVE WARNED AN OLD WOMAN WHAT JACKFRUIT DOES TO A KNIFE 🤦♀️
I'm only watching, liking, and commenting for this video in order to support the channel -- even before going vegan, I could never stand the taste of pork or barbecue sauce (and especially not both together). I love your channel that much! Haha
Honestly, I'd substitute way more meat dishes with Vegan or Vegetarian alternatives if the price was approachable, but it's primarily a lifestyle only middle class and up has privilege on and not for us poor folk. Someday we'll figure out how to make it cheaper than meat, someday, then I'll gladly eat that mushroom version probably weekly as I LOVE mushrooms! That umami taste is KING!

Cheese sauce is a must. It's so hard to replicate just right.
I liked the format just fine.
Very good, seeing the options and the pros/cons to each really helps me not spend money on something I don't need.
The very first time I bought jackfruit, I didn't know there were different kinds. I bought the one in syrup and made a BBQ sandwich with that. It tasted like a BBQ and pineapple sandwich which was pretty good. Lol
Oh wow, haha yeah I can see that being a happy accident!
Buying fruit to make a bbq sandwich was your first mistake…
@@JustSendMeLocation I didn't realize it would taste fruity. Lol. The non-sweet kind work better but my store doesn't sell that.
Kinda surprised you didn't include Soy Curls in this test. They make an excellent BBQ sandwich.

Great idea to combine so you get a bit of that amazing mushroom taste but more of it
I just asked if I could use soy curls, thank you. Great idea of the combo.
Really liked the comparison of different options format. "Yes" to more videos like this!
I’ve combined mushrooms and jackfruit which is really nice too.

Grating tofu is a game changer! I'm definitely going to try that. I think I can use the air fryer to dry them out. So many possibilities!!
You should try enoki mushrooms, no shredding needed, since they are already strands, usually i cut them up. They are my favorite for pulled pork like dishes

Mix jack fruit with oyster mushrooms…best of both worlds! Then add tofu and it makes it “proteiner”!

maybe you can combine the jackfruit with the mushrooms to add texture and taste
As for texture, could a combination of the three be superior to only using one?
i've combined jackfruit with mushrooms (shitake) before and it was really good.
Really great video! Definitely a lot of good alternatives out there
