    This video in combination with the video about "Don't rush your swing" got my acceleration to work through impact and made all the difference. What I realized and worked well for me at least, was that the main force of the acceleration really only takes place between from when the arms are parallel with the ground in the downswing and the impact which is only a really a short distans, with the snap of my lead knee straighting the leg out being the key to get the pendulum-effect. Everything before is really only about getting in to "the slot", starting of with a relative slow acceleration or more a feeling of the club and arms dropping before taking of. Thanks for great vids! Best regards from Sweden.

    7-handicap, usually hit my 3-wood 225 with a little fade. First game of the year a few days ago. I had to apologize to the guys on the green 275 yards ahead as I rolled my 3-wood up to where they were putting. They were cool with it, complimented me on the shot. New M4 replaced the old RBZ ... think I'm gonna like this new club. Hit it just as far on the back nine, so not a fluke!

    thanks for this tip with the 3 wood-- I used the tips to use the three wood as my driver and for the most part it cured most of the woes off the tee except twice when I hit the ground first which I have to attribute to ball placement (and perhaps dropping my shoulder on the downswing). Again thanks for the help since before this video my three wood had been a problem on and off the tee. For me opening up the hips and following the Nicklaus tip that you cannot release your driver soon from the transition at the top into your downswing has created and cured a lot of my problems that I attribute to trying to hold lag to the last moment with disastrous inconsistency.

I started watching your videos and now I can at least get to the green with the people I play with. One thing I seem to do better than the some is driving the ball. With out your videos I would be lost on the course. I still cant win any games I play but I'm now enjoying the game. This is largely due to your great videos. So thank you!!!

    I like what you are teaching here, but I can't make that full turn anymore since my back is fused from L1 to S1. I'm not even supposed to be playing golf according to my surgeon, but what the heck, it's what I love to do. I am having to learn how to play golf all over again with my physical limitations. I like the concept of hitting down on the ball with the 3 wood, it's a lot harder for me to hit since I don't have the full turn and swing speed anymore. I appreciate what you share in these videos, I can incorporate some of the things you teach.

    My usual 3W shot normally goes anywhere from 175 to 190 in total distance. (no idea of the carry distance) When I get the 190 yard shot I feel like I had hit it with the best swing I could put on it. I long for the day when just my good swings will consistently carry the 3W 200 or plus yards. Then again......I also dream that someday I will hit my driver a consistent 240+ carry. But...that is another dream to be dealt with down the road. Hopefully this video will be another step in the process. Thanks Clay and Q!

    I only have one Mizuno driver MP dating from 2004 I guess, almost never used it, not in my bag. My driver is a Gary Player "Black Knight" 3 wood 13° chromium face (dating 2002) which has been the issue of many complaints from my golfing partners, it gives me 250 avg. yards from fairway and then some or little more from the tee box. A driver would be the last last thing I would spend my money. After all, a driver is a 1 wood. A bigger sized one which is not intended to hit with intention from a fairway or tight lie to a green. No 3 iron in bag also.

    One other comment. I watch various Golf "teachers" on RUclips and just last night I saw a video where the guy (who will remain nameless) was saying to "sweep" the ball with your 3W to get your best distance with it and to not take a divot. Which is the opposite of what Clay was saying above. I understand that different teachers each have their own philosophy when it comes to this silly game but when I see two that teach the exact opposite from each other obviously it is very confusing to a hacker like me. The trick, of course, is to figure out which teacher is the best option for helping the game that I currently have. And figuring that out is kind of difficult for someone like me. But as far as I am concerned right now Clay Ballard is the best golf "teacher" on RUclips these days. And if it comes down to a choice between him and someone who teaches the opposite......well I know which way I am going to go.

    That 3 wood your using, it really seems to have a smaller face, especially the height. My Cobra seems larger. I used to have a ton of confidence in this club, then I lost it. Maybe I was swinging down when I was hitting well and didn't realize it. Now I know I try to sweep or even scoop it. You don't by any chance focus just in front of or on the front of the ball do you? I did that with my irons, swing down, focus just in front of the ball, and it really made a difference.

    Have to wonder where you are going to need to hit a 3wood of the turf to go 300yds?If you can control a 3wood at that distance you surely can control a driver off the TEE to go further,if you hit a driver 300 plus where does a 3 wood of the turf come into play after that? And if you hit a 3 wood of the TEE you would more than likely USE A TEE? But nothing wrong with the theory if you duff your drive.

    Hit down on the ball. End of lesson.
    The rest of the video is him seeing how far he can hit his 3-wood, trying for that 300 yard mark.
    He doesn’t talk about ball position, or stance, or club face angle, or shaft angle, or grip, or any of the most common mistakes made by the average golfer.
    Nope. None of that is discussed.
    All he says is hit down on the ball. And other than your Driver and Putter, that “tip” pretty much applies every club in the bag for the average player.

    I have no idea what my swing speed is? Everyone tells me to slow down my swing! I feel if I want to get all the distance I need fast swing speed. I usually hit my 3 off the ground better than any other club! I am playing 3-4 times a week but my play is erratic. this past Thursday i shot 41 in 9 and Friday I shot 50 in 9. Normally i am in the side to low 40s. I have a lot of trouble with my driver.

    Meh, good tip about “hitting down” rather than “sweeping”, BUT what I also saw was where the ball was at setup. For the sweeping demo, ball was off the left heel, when he cranked one over 300, at 8:24, ball was significantly more towards the center. But ball set-up was never mentioned.

    • @TopSpeedGolf
      @TopSpeedGolf  4 года назад

      That could be the camera angle a little bit but ball position should be a little forward of center or slightly more forward than that. If you get it too far forward then you run into some of the issues Clay talked about here. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

    Thanks for another great video Clay. Q: When we use the 3 wood from the tee box, should we lower our tee height and also hit down vs sweep?

    • @TopSpeedGolf
      @TopSpeedGolf  4 года назад +2

      Thanks! You can do that. You'll hit the ball further with less spin if you tee it a little higher and play it a little forward almost like you'd hit your driver. You can hit it a little shorter with more spin if you play it just like we talk about in the video but just use the tee to give yourself a perfect lie. I use both methods depending on what I'm trying to do. If I'm trying to launch my 3 wood as far as possible then I'll hit it similar to the way I hit my driver. If I'm trying to take a little off and add some stopping power then I'll tee it low and hit down on it. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

    One thing to keep in mind is that it's important to know how far you can comfortably hit your fairway woods, and to be okay with laying up and not trying to reach a green that's outside your range. Trying to get extra distance can lead to tension and or gripping the club too tight which can lead to slicing, topping and shanking-which will most likely lead to a bigger score than if you laid up.

    I try to hit down on the ball with three wood and my angle of attack always ends up too steep and the club just crashes into the ground under the ball.

    • @TopSpeedGolf
      @TopSpeedGolf  3 года назад +1

      You may not be too steep. You might just be contacting the ground in the wrong place. Try moving the ball back a little bit and/or make sure you shift your weight to your lead side. Play well!

      4 wood is easier to hit, as you mentioned, so is swinging easy. But sometimes you need a little more distance, so a good firm 3 wood is the only option. I hope are playing well!

      Launch at about 9 degree and 3500 rpm spin would be good.

  • @rick24lb
    @rick24lb 4 года назад +1

    Clay can you also do this with a driver? I was told you can't because of extra spin it causes. But you would know, can one also hit down on a driver off a tee?

    • @TopSpeedGolf
      @TopSpeedGolf  4 года назад

      You can but it does add a lot of extra spin because the sweet spot is so much higher. You have to hit the below the sweet spot which adds a lot of spin. I used to hit my old Callaway Big Bertha Warbird off the deck all the time but that was a time when drivers weren't the size of toasters. You're better off not usually hitting your 3 wood. Play well! Hi Clay, I'm currently working on not flipping the club and having forward shaft lean at impact. My question is: how much right wrist extension should I have at impact? At the top of my swing, the weight of the club is resting on my right hand and it is fully extended (the holding a tray analogy), but what happens on the down swing and how do I know what the magic position is if it's somewhere between fully extended and partially extended? I realize the I have to fully release the club through impact (ulnar deviation), so that's not really an issue.
    Thanks,
    William Carter

    • @TopSpeedGolf
      @TopSpeedGolf  4 года назад +1

      If you're flipping then I would try to have as much as you possibly can. If you flip then you're right wrist is likely in flexion at impact. If you actually over-do it and get too much forward shaft lean then you can always ease off. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
