They also protect due process. Secret Service is not there to break laws or make things difficult like private bodyguards might try to. These people are top-level American officers first and foremost. Trump would never be in a joint cell or general population, with or without Secret Service agents. Beyond keeping him safe, SSA's make no difference.
Wanting him not to be safe is wanting to go against due process and rule of law. He needs to be safe during the trial so that we have a chance to see justice with him _removed from society,_ even if the place he winds up is not the miserable condition anyone else would have to deal with.
Most people have lost faith that the US legal system can stop Trump's crime spree.

Never in the history of the USA has a defendant ignores the judges gag order 10 times and gets freedom to walkout of courtroom.
The first ones all happened before the judge drew the line, even though the tenth was sentenced afterward. All ten count as his "first strike." I want him in jail too, but a mistrial is about the worst possible outcome, and the judge is doing well not to give an appeals court ANY reason to let Trump out of this. No appeal, no mistrial. The only way we begin to move forward is a guilty verdict that stands up to appeal. Giving Trump every opportunity to behave is good for this, in the long run.
It bothers me that at this point Judge Merchan is still threatening, not acting. "Therefore going forward the count will have to CONSIDER a jail sanction. What the heck. Isn't the judge CONSIDERING a jail sentence NOW! If not, why?

It's "breathtaking" that anyone would consider things good under Biden considering everyone's life is considerably financially harder under his presidency. The judge has already failed to preserve the dignity of the legal system and made a mockery of it with the sickening degree of lenience, deference, and favoritism shown to a criminal defendant due to nothing but politics. By definition, unequal application of the law is not justice.
