Full Story is a series wherein each video contains all previous videos on a single topic, compiled into a marathon documentary. This video contains a few new bits (including brand new stand-alone sections about the Volvo 240 Turbo and Rover SD1 Vitesse), but if you recognise parts, its probably not deja vu. Regardless of how much or little you have seen before, I hope you enjoy!
i love how you’ve used this format sooooo much. i don’t mind when other channels do it as i enjoy long videos, but your care in adding extra bits for context was greatly appreciated. it feels as carefully constructed as any standalone video especially as a newer viewer who hasn’t seen a lot of these
@@AnthroGearhead True, but I feel like you could reinvent DTM and pay homage to its roots by making it an EV series using the Porsche Taycan and Audi E Tron.
@@AnthroGearheadYes, we may as well have van racing. 🤔 A grid full of delivery drivers, builders and plumbers, what could go wrong🙂 Ah yes commercial vehicles are specifically excluded from racing on track by the FIA.
Insanely informative docu !!! I found your channel not long ago, and it is high up on my RUclips Best-to-worst Channel list :) Thank you for all your hard work. Love from Arendal, Norway :)
DTM The series that breeds icons and legends The Touring era probably will never come back, now that it fully embraced GT3 But maybe.. just maybe.. it will make a comeback in the future.
Ah, here it is! The combined DTM video! Been looking forward to this. Neat seeing the Volvo & Rover have their own segments. Any hints for what your next series will be on?
Feel like there needs to be a video on Opel now. On how the Omega was a bit kak, the Calibra took its time to get there then the 00s Vectra's giving it their best as well...
"mayhem" is probs the best word to describe this era of European Touring Car racing... (besides "sublime"... "inspired"... "pure"..). We took it for granted they racing would always be so great, but in reality we were just in the midst of a golden few years, that only shone with brilliance in retrospect... since at the time it was absolute flipping MAYHEM!
I used to be a DTM fan, I used to hop over to Germany 5 or 6 times a season, but there's no point now. GT 3? No thanks. The Class 1 cars were awesome. Why on Gods Green Earth did they get rid of them? They were unique in Europe but the Japanese Super GT Champion started using the Class 1 regulation, and are still using them today. There's no way I'm going to Japan a couple of times a season. So, I will stick to the Australian V8 Supercars Championship. I know its not what it used to be, with the iconic Holden Badge disappearing, leaving Cheverolet to step in with the Camaro and Ford racing the Mustang, more like the American Muscle Car Championship, with Ford and Cheverolet the only manufacturers competing. Now the good news, Toyota have decided to join the Championship, and there's a rumour Audi are looking at getting involved, that would be cool. It wasn't long ago, Volvo, Mercedes and Nissan were competing too. I would love to see this Championship with more manufacturers, because I go to Mount Panorama for the Bathurst 1000, The Great Race every year, all the way from Glasgow Scotland. Worth it! See you in October Australia! ❤ Australia ❤ Scotland!
What a fantastic video I watched this back in the day I’m team Alfa Romeo all day long that was a special time You’re really good at putting this content together and yes I did watch the full vid Respect Fella 🙏🏻
No, but you are allowed to modify parts. One Problem was the translation of the Group A rules. They were written in french and in english, and the interpretation of the term piece d'origine
I guess it depends on which category of touring cars people prefer. Obviously for Group A and Class 1 DTM was unmatched because BTCC was a lot smaller in scale under the former regulations and never raced under the latter. For Class 2/Super Touring though I'm not sure the STW Cup ever matched BTCC in terms of manufacturer variety or general standard of competition.
Great video, lots of info I didn't know here. Though I'd love to hear even more detailed info about rule changes and tech. Like what were the changes mercedes made to the 190 halfway into 1993? Details about the 155Tis crazy engine and 4wd system. And how could Audi enter the v8 car, was there not a 2.5 liter limit? Just curious, I'm a mechanic with my own company restoring wheels and love details! I have a 1990 190E 2.6 with a custom made 3.4 liter 11/1 compression engine.
excellent compilation, and ofc the individual videos were as well, even having watched them all separately i still find myself intently watching through their parts in the video, and the new segments on the 240 and sd1 were fantastic to see! any chance of a video/videos on the 2nd gen class 1 cars and their short run in modern dtm and continuation into super gt? would be a great opportunity to deep dive into a sadly underappreciated segment of modern racing history as well as a tie-in of your coverage of western and eastern racing history 🙏
High ✋ Great summary as always edit: ...I'm really sorry best DTM "full story" ever - simply unicorn quality! send it to the "Alte Schule"-guy - to have him distribute under the still living, mentioned in the video....
After all the experience audi had picked up in imsa gto racing series in America with the 200 turbo, its hardly surprising the v8 was awesome straight out of box.
Great documentary as always! I don't think it's completely fair to feel like Ford were singled out because of the turbo ban only to turn around they did the right thing banning Audi's flat plane crank. It was after all a standard crank that was heated and twisted to modify it and significantly weakening it in the process. Audi were operating within the regulations and they weren't even winning by much because of it. But I do think it's strange that they banned turbochargers because of Ford rather than "forcing" the other teams to go turbo which is what they should have done. IMHO they should adjust the rules to make racing more even and exciting but not by banning superior tech. Just allow and/or encourage everyone to use that tech.
A 1.5-hour racing tour of the German Touring Car Championship history line. It is like a 2-hour racing trip all across West Europe and Germanic regions.
Thanks! As I said this video is just about the winners in Group A - will likely cover some of the less successful cars (particularly the Opels) in videos on the schedule for next year :)
Really appreciate the knowledge and learning so much of sport I love. Well done and if only one request would be not see your face every two minutes. No offence but rather see the cars
I got a quick question where did you get all the very cool posters that are behind you on your wall I would like to get a couple and put down in my man cave I just want to know where you found them
Hold the phone! I assume you meant that the 240 turbo made 340hp in RACE TRIM? You made it sound like that was the road car spec. I had to google and it was 155hp on the road
Does it occur to you, as it does to me, that the more official it gets, the more lame? We had BMW, Rover, Jaguar, Mercedes, Opel, Alfa. Volvo, for chrissake. Anything went and everyone tried. Now we have trouble keeping even two brands interested. Yeah, that's good. Keep it up, lads!
6:06 and 9:22 wrong engine. The picture shows the M88/3 engine of the M635CSi which has a 24V cylinder head and 6 throttle bodies.. In DTM BMW drove with the M30 Engine of 635 CSi (2 valve per cylinder and only 1 throttle body). And of course the 325i does not have 3L, but only 2.5L displacement
Same reason that killed every single class: homologation rules change. If the cars were still mostly the same as the ones on the street we'd still enjoy those. But carbon monocoques and monstruous aero did its job
The SD1 Vitesse is an unfortunate example of "very capable but entirely rubbish" all at the same time. In racing it proves that its a strong competitor that duked it out with the legends, but the production version's fit and finish is so unbelievably horrid, the electrics is a nightmare, and rust-proneness equal to a child swallowing something they shouldn't have.
The only one reason why I loved DTM so much is the legendary rivals battle between the Mercedes vs BMW at the racing track. Mercedes vs BMW are the most powerful German racing manufacturers in Motorsports history the Mercedes vs BMW both are racing in DTM throughout the year decade era in 1980s and 1990s expect 2000s because BMW was not racing DTM on 2000s era the 2000s of DTM cars were are Mercedes,Audi and Opel are racing expect Opel was leaving DTM after 2005 season and only 2 cars remain Mercedes and Audi. In 2010s era the BMW was official return in DTM and three legendary of German trios are back together Mercedes and Audi and BMW 3 of them racing each other at the race track but until DTM fallen down apart again the Mercedes leave in DTM after 2018 and Audi leaving as well in 2020 season also the 2020 season was the last era of class 1 touring cars rules and only 1 car remain is BMW and DTM now became a GT3 sport car racing series. DTM is the most legendary German iconic motorsport series ever made in motorsports history. Also last thing i love about DTM is the 1990s era about between these two german legendary rivalry iconic the Mercedes 190E vs BMW E30 M3 is one of my favourite battles on Touring car racing in 1990s era. I love you DTM ❤
Championship promotors the world over, get over excited about the prospect of new teams wanting to join in. Invariably these new teams aim to influence the regulations to their favour. Costs get out of hand and what was a healthy championship with full grids, start to thin out. Homologation based on 20,000 units produced is a good No. to stop the specials.
Audi cheating scandal. I think the German car makers have cheated a lot over the last few decades, not saying the other car companies are angels, no way, but that there are so many cheats...yes it makes me question so much in motorsports. F1 being the worst, how they try to find loopholes could be considered good and challenging, but then again... DTM in general was a great league though.
Well this is so unfair motorsport can bee,it seems that Ford not should come and beat well grounded german brands,Audi with 4x4 with no xtra kg or restrictors,Ford with 200 kg xtra weight added, when this i\was,nt enough, they demand that they should use a narrow restrictor, seems to me that Ford was the only brand who every time they win, they get some xtra shit,Audi BMW & MB,Dont bee punishet when they win, But Ford win races whit all xtras anyway,Ford have allways had, really good handling, down to normal A too B cars, they have every time in test,in div magazines, score highest on roadholding, balance ,steering etc,,Thank you for a video, who was really informative, and give a good picture of DTM Trough the years🏎🚗🚥👀😁🏁🏁🏆🥇

No doubt one of the greatest eras of racing, wish they still continued to run touring car classes in DTM instead of the GT3s
The lack of modern road going super saloons are the reasons why DTM died
