So... what was the best year of the World Rally Championship?

  • @aquaisuseful682

Being an American it is a shame rally isn’t big here. The death of Ken Block might truly have ended all hopes of rally entering popularity here in the states. He really was a trailblazer into the love of this European sport. I can only dream we will have my home of New England as a country featured into the WRC calendar. Fabulous video btw.

Lucky for you, there has been discussions of helding WRC event in Tennessee. Question is that can the majority of the public and organizers there understand the rallying culture, so that there would be plenty of spectators on the stages and that everything would go smoothly organizing wise. Subaru Motosport USA has build some new rallycars too, but they don't comply within the current WRC regulations, kinda hoping that FIA would do big rule changes to allow them to race as well, would do good for the sport for sure.

Especially a shame considering you have some beautiful roads, and could probably get away without having to repeat stages so often

Makes literally no sense that Americans (specifically rednecks) don't like ralley. Got the room for it, got the cars for it, tailgate by the track and Whooooo every few minutes find a way to add guns and its as american as apple pie.

    • @HonkyKong258

Agreed. It's a damn shame. We've got so many great places to do it, and we've got an ample off-roading culture. Feels like this country could and should be a rally powerhouse and we just aren't. I would love to see rally cars hauling ass through Alaska, Colorado, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Washington, West Virginia...throw a dart!

The voiceover is pleasant and high-quality, the clips are well selected, music isn’t loud or intrusive, and the 3d models of the cars look like straight out of my dream indie rally game. Superb video!

Hello everyone- thank you for the continued support on this video! Just wanted to address the comments rightfully pointing out the odd historical innacuracies and mistakes- I made the majority of these videos when I had a much, much smaller channel, when I didn't proofread my scripts as well as I should've. Therefore, a fair few mistakes that I should've caught slipped under the radar. None are at all major and don't disrupt the overall narrative, but they exist nonetheless. Hope you all understand!

..and now the landscape of the sport will change once again with Rally1 ditching the hybrid system with a slightly smaller aero deficit, while Rally2 can be optioned with a "WRC Kit" to give them bigger wings for aero and less air intake restriction for more power.
So effectively we will see two different types of cars going at it at the top class with one type being a purpose built silhouette rally cars and the other being the more traditional rally cars with closer relation to the road cars.

Even though I wasn't even alive for that particular era of rally, the Lancia Stratos (particularly the red and green on white livery with gold wheels) will forever be a rally icon in my mind not because of it's numerous firsts and victories, but because it graced the cover of Sega Rally. Those games were my initial introduction to the sport and the beginning of my fascination with all things motorized. Gran Turismo may get all the credit, but Sega Rally and later Rallisport Challenge are what made me a gearhead.

Your power output for the Mini is rather optimistic! The original Mini was only 850cc and produced 33bhp, the Mini 1000 you quoted was introduced in 1967 by which time the Mini's rallying career was virtually over, and that produced just 37bhp. Even the ultimate Cooper S 1275 only produced 70bhp - 100bhp from 1000cc was the stuff of dreams in the 1960s!

I love the format and the work behind this, but there are a couple of inaccuracies, for example Michael Park was not a driver, he was Markko Martin's codriver. Or the team orders in catalunya 1995 where it was said from the start that there would be team orders to maintain position (i think after day 1, so whoever came out leading at the end of the day took the rally) and sainz was in fact against mcrae slowing down and wanted to race. There are probably a couple more mistakes like these, still, great series, really enjoyable.

I agree with your end note about there needing to be more manufacturers in WRC because it is quite boring seeing the same 3 car companies compete with each other, I want there to be more cars and more drivers competing to create more overall fun, while hatchbacks are probably still going to be king maybe another manufacturer would bring along another innovation and shake things up. Because as of now there has been too many 3 manufacturer WRCs.

  • @ivaneurope

I'd like to congratulate you for the well put retrospective of the evolution of rallying as a sport. And here we are in 2024 where the WRC is at a crossroad with the Rally1 regulations, though looking way more radical even by Group B standarts with all the bells and whistles, failed to attract new manufacturers and they've arrived way too late to the hybrid party. And now, the WRC had decided to end the hybrid experiment for 2025 and new generation of Rally1 cars will be on the horizon by 2026 allowing for more broader range of sizes and shapes. But as a byproduct they also had to shoehorn the Rally2-spec cars into this Frankenstein wannabe Rally1 specification (in a way echoing the RRC experiment). IMO what the FIA should've done was to allow R5/Rally2 cars to have a mandatory WRC kit (or allow independent contractors do it) way back when this category was conceived. If Skoda or Peugeot didn't want to compete in the top class - fine, but they should've allowed privateers to use a WRC bodykit for their R5 cars if they wanted to enter the top class

Warning, inaccurate information! I intended to watch the whole 2 hour video but changed my mind after a mere 2 minutes from the beginning 2:00. There it said Paris-Bordeaux return race was 732 miles long (that is 366 miles one way), then Paris-Madrid race, more or less the same almost straight line route in the same direction, crossing the border through the Pyrenees, was 340 miles long! Does that make sense?! Quickest time 5:15:00 between the two capitals? Do you know it takes the record holding TGV train 2:04:00 to go from Paris to Bordeaux? While I appreciate the effort, I don't need someone with dysmetria to tell me about car race. I hope that's the only misinformation in this video, but I am not going to find out myself. I have better ways to spend 2 hours of my time. Leave your comments if you found more mistakes.

    He came close to 10.
He might have ruined the wrc with his 10th title.
But I am gonna admit he was too good. The way he drove during his citroen years.
However the WRC will always have the pop-pop & bang-bang years that beats the silence of the lambs electric.
    Because those cars had character...
