Best review out there. But your interpretation of the true ending is a bit wrong. It wasn't a bad dream at all, all of that did happen. Tomoya died and in the "afterlife" used those orbs foreshadowed in the anime to grant his wish of attaining a family.

There was one scene where an orb was absorbed into Tomoya, I forgot what episode. Add that to the myth about the city and how you can get a wish if you capture an orb, basically I envisioned that he didn't actually die but entered the other reality where his one wish could be manifested. The other reality either occurred at the same time hence why it seems familiar to him in different parts of the series before his daughter dies, or it was outside of time itself. But it couldn't all have happened after his death or else it wouldn't have seemed familiar throughout the show, even going back to Clannad when he was doing the play.

@@jon9428 he died, and get to the other world with the girl and the robot. The girl is Ushio and the robot is Tomoya. He looks like a robot bcs that was his first gift to Ushio.
You're right that there's a light orb getting inside Tomoya like when he say goodbye to his father in episode, idk, maybe 18/19 in after story. And he get the other orbs when he helps someone from the city.
The orbs grant your wish, but it's not enough to bring Nagisa back until Tomoya is dead. But, bcs Nagisa is the soul of the city, and after she died, Ushio become the soul, it means that Ushio (and Nagisa) is the city herself, and the city is actually a character itself. So, she or the city, tried to grant Tomoya's wish. That's why she/it brings him to the another world. In that world, Ushio/the city collecting a lot of light orbs that shown after Nagisa's birth (when she survived) to grant Tomoya's wish to live a happy live with Nagisa and Ushio, and apologize to his father.
Actually, the explanation is a lot complex and longer than this, but i tried to make it simple

⚠️Warning: *this comment contains MAJOR spoilers.*
Honestly when I first started watching Clannad I didn’t expect one bit that I would cry this much. I had heard that this was emotional but when I saw the fuko arc I thought that was it. Not gonna lie I teared up a bit in that arc and I found it really good, but I thought that would be it for the emotional part. It obviously wasn’t. Once Nagisa and Tomoya got married and pregnant I was pretty happy, and then they started talking about how Nagisa might die. I didn’t believe that whatsoever. Once Nagisa gave birth and died, I was shocked. I just couldn’t believe it. The feels hit me in the next episode when we found out 5 years had passed and that Nagisa was officially dead. I really didn’t think that the author would do something like that. And once we saw Ushio, that is when I broke. Tomoya seriously abandoned his daughter, the thing Nagisa died for. And then I cried for all the parts of ep 18. When she called him daddy, when we found out about the back story of his dad, when Tomoya tried to tell ushio about Nagisa, etc. I honestly could have never anticipated sobbing this much. After that in ep 19 when we saw Sanae crying, I broke again. The poor soul’s daughter died that young, her daughter’s husband is a mess, and she hadn’t cried one bit. Honestly after that I didn’t cry because I had no tears left. When the last episode came and ushio died, again I didn’t believe it, but then we went back in time 5 years and Nagisa didn’t die. i was extremely confused and happy at the same time. And that was the end of the masterpiece we call Clannad. To this day Clannad is the most I’ve cried in an anime EVER. The feels hit you like a truck, shatter you into tiny pieces and throw you in the trash. Clannad is the most beautiful emotional anime in the world. the emotions to the dialogues to basically everything, The way Clannad pieces everything together and puts itself out there is perfect. It is a masterpiece that only a few people in this world have been able to witness. Now don’t get me wrong, it has its flaws, but that doesn’t matter because its a masterpiece like no other, and the greatness waaaaayy surpasses the flaws. All I have left to say is that Clannad is an amazing masterpiece, and it doesn’t matter how strong you might be, it will make you cry like a little baby.

This show is unbelievable with how powerful its writing is. It takes the anti escapism shows like neon genesis evangelion thrive in and cranks it up 1000x. Explanation on the finale, the last - 22nd episode of After Story, many people have a lot of questions. Without familiarity with the source material (the Clannad game) actually, it's hard to understand why things turned out the way they did.
Tomoya has a great gift from birth. He is able to give people happiness and change the world by force of will. Of course, according to the law of karma, such a person must endure a lot since childhood, because without trials and struggles the gift will not develop. This explains all the childhood sorrows of the protagonist. By the way, in the Clannad universe, the gift is always passed down through the female line. It is not a bonus and not a freebie, but a heavy cross, improper handling of it drives mad and quickly kills the bearer.
According to the Eastern canon, a person cannot reach everything on his own. Even the Buddha had teachers. Tomoya meets Nagisa, who has a very different gift. She is a conduit of spiritual energy, a catalyst for others to find happiness. According to the same laws, she cannot keep anything for herself, immediately "pouring" what she has received upwards into a higher-level system. The "eddy currents" drain her own life force, hence Nagisa's eternal ill-health and insecurity. Now it's clear that, except for Tomoya, Nagisa is not suitable for anyone at all, because only he can "fill" her, because the guy does not care about the laws of nature, if he sincerely wants something.
But it's not that simple. As I understood it, Nagisa lasted until she was 5 years old, because the gift was dormant, and then disaster struck, and Akio, in desperation, devoted his daughter to the city, and essentially "gave her up". After that, the gift woke up, the energy drained through the girl, and Nagisa was doomed. When she met Tomoya and gave birth to Ushio, she unconsciously tried to close the currents on herself to survive, but it caused her to die quickly.
Tomoya and Nagisa's gifts combined in Ushio, and as a result, the girl understood the situation from birth and found the only way out. Her plan was simple and ingenious:
    1. awaken her father's gift and force it into action.
    2. to bring her mother back and change her gift and cure her of the curse.
There was no hurry and Ushio waited, allowing her father to distance himself and accumulate potential energy. She herself grew elementally, for she knew that although she could do almost anything, she would never reach her father in brute strength, and there was a lot of strength to be gained. When she thought she was ready, she "called" Tomoya and quickly set his brains right, and the man soared to the heights of happiness. You kamaradas haven't had much interaction with small children... so, Ushio isn't like that at all. It's not for nothing that the experienced 43-year-old seiyu Satomi Kurogi, who is old enough to be a mother to little Mai Nakahara (Nagisa's seiyu), was called in to voice her.
After realizing that her father had matured, Ushio began the main plan. First of all, she split her consciousness, moving most of her personality to the higher levels and using almost all of her accumulated power to isolate an area there and close it to herself, creating the Illusory World (IM). That is, the higher realms have always existed, but Ushio created an enclave there, her fulcrum. In the Real World (RM), little Ushio, left without strength, quickly withered and died. Alas, this was part of the plan as well. Tomoya collapsed into such abysses of despair that he was soon ready to follow his wife and daughter. That's when Ushio in IM (by the way, her white-clad persona is voiced by another great seiyuu, Tomoko Kawakami) was able to gather enough strength to jump back in time, grab her father when he was still with Nagisa, riding a jig, and have a heart-to-heart talk.
After explaining the situation and the bleak outlook, Ushio said that she had created a harbor, a fulcrum from which Tomoya could jump through time and reality and bring happiness to people. The energy of happiness, i.e. the lights, will not be given to the uncles upstairs, but will be stored in Ushio's enclave so that the good will not go to waste. Tomoya's task is to accumulate enough to have enough power for one powerful strike to drastically change reality. Time is limited - Ushio can hold its ground for a couple years at most, after which they will all die.
Tomoya looked at the unhappy future, impressed, and set about the task. First of all, with the help of his daughter, he placed his own orienting beacon into the robot doll, putting a part of his consciousness into it. Then
sealed the memory of what had happened, leaving only a subconscious mindset to do good deeds. Ushio, meanwhile, visited her mother and put a story about an empty world and a lonely girl into her head. I don't rule out that she helped Tomoya a little in other cases. And then it was on!
It turns out that the first season is just one of Tomoya's many exploits in different times and alternate realities. Although he sealed his memory, his subconscious can't be ordered to do so, hence the constant glitches and déjà-vu, spontaneous breakthroughs of his gift. Another alternate path is the story of Tomoyo, shown in episode 24 of the first season, it is implied that behind the scenes in other worlds he helped Kotomi, Kyo, Ryo, and many others even more personally. Tomoya's superpowers were clearly defined by Fuko, who due to her own failure between worlds could see many things. If you remember, she says in episode 4 of the first season, "You don't meet someone that strange every day. And not just not every day, for a dozen years will not meet. And that's not an exaggeration!"
The sequence continues in the second season. After gaining the necessary energy, Tomoya returned to the main line to the main bifurcation point - Nagisa's death. Meanwhile, Ushio in IM gathered what she could and sent her father back to the moment of her birth. The IM collapsed and Ushio in her dress dispersed with it. After gaining such strength, Tomoya saved Nagisa by calling her from the other side, which is symbolized in episode 22 in the scene at the foot of the hill. Tomoya said to the city, which, as you may remember, was pumping energy through Nagisa, causing her early death: "The Buddha commanded that we should share. Any questions?" There were no questions and the parties agreed that the city would share when Nagisa pumped another portion through her, so that it would be enough for her health and the family budget.
As the IM shattered and Ushio-in-a-dress dissipated into the distant future from the heroes' point of view while saving Nagisa, Ushio was quietly born and raised, this time sitting quietly in the real world to avoid a time paradox. And when that very time came, Ushio of IM reunited with her reflection in RM, as seen by Fuko in the series 22 finale. Since Tomoya and Nagisa's daughter thereby gained all the knowledge and memory she had gained over the previous years, Fuko is quite right - the fun is just beginning!
But that's another story and we won't hear it from D. Maeda.
I hope that the mystical background of the series and the plot of the 22nd episode became a little clearer to you now.
As a side note - little Nagisa, on the verge of death, was dedicated by her father to some forest spirits (without realizing it himself). When the forest was destroyed, their support waned and the girl began to wither again.Nagisa, Tomoya, and especially Ushio are truly unremarkable individuals.Insecure people (like Nagisa) are blocked from receiving energy "from above" through the heart chakra. And Tomoya had a blocked release of that energy before meeting Nagisa. When they met, they leveled each other's shortcomings.I repeat - there are no losses for "eddy currents" in nature - people who distribute universal energy do not lose anything, but perceive the happiness of all the givers as their own.Because the game's arcs are inconsistent, they clearly show different incarnations of Tomoya. The philosophy of Buddhism rules here. By helping people "from life to life", he earns good karma (symbolized by the Spheres of Light) to overcome the bad fate of the Nagisa destined for him (the reasons for the bad karma are there for those who wish to find out for themselves).
Ushio was originally meant to be Tomoya and Nagisa's daughter - having learned about her mother's problems, she, without incarnating further in the physical world, created the Illusory World - an observation point in the higher dimension to keep the situation under control and to allow Tomoya to do her good deed unknowingly and sincerely.
And Tomoya left a part of his consciousness there to support Ushio - she assembled a mechanical body for her. (The coolest yogis can split their consciousness and create many incarnations at the same time, that's a fact. The distribution of karma is handled by authorized individuals who don't take anything for themselves - to the question of "uncles at the top").
    Then she had a parallel
incarnated in this world (just as the doll forced her to leave the illusory world) - but only to die a little and to wake up her father.Tomoya's strong desire to save the dying Ushio activated the disintegration of the illusory world and the realization of the accumulated. He died with his daughter, and by the next incarnation, preparations to save Nagisa were completed. The karma collected by Tomoya in this last incarnation (including Akio's arc in the game) finally turned Nagisa's fate around (Ushio didn't remake the world entirely, Tomoya's memories of his wife's death are from a past life). There's a reason why the walkthrough of the first part of the game is multi-stage and even the After Story is at least two-stage (the anime couldn't show this, as well as many other nuances that reveal the mystique of Clannad). I think the flow of the Spheres of Light in IM belongs to more than just Tomoya.

Watching tomoya spending time with ushio as he's talking to her about nagisa was so heartbreaking, nagisa probably wanted to test him by giving him the bad ending to see if he truly meant that he wished he'd never met her, even though he was the reason why nagisa had the courage to start the theater club.

i'm going to give this show a try because i don't have a heart and I cannot cry. I never cry out of pure depression. I only shed tears full of resentment and hatred towards people, the position i'm being backed into a corner. Frustration. That's it... as for tears of joy and depression? Nah..... Well i'll give this anime a shot and hope it does bring back the feelings of love, compassion and even empathy/sympathy that I lost.

5:22 Omg thank you. It was just like the most boring dragged out shit ever.
Here is Fuko. Some people can see Fuko some can't who tf knows why. Why won't Fuko just tell Fuko's sister to get married on Fuko's own? Cause Fuko's actually in a coma, silly. Fuko likes -stars- starfish.
Fuko gives people starfish. Fuko gives people starfish. Come to Fuko's sister's wedding. Fuko gives people starfish. Fuko gives people starfish. Come to Fuko's sister's wedding. People are forgetting Fuko. People are forgetting Fuko. "Fuko is Fuko right?" Fuko gives people starfish. (No, Fuko is not Fuko. Fuko is Fuko.) People are forgetting Fuko. People are forgetting Fuko. "Fuko doesn't exist so Fuko is Fuko liar. Now I am going to visit Fuko in the hospital" Fuko gives people starfish. (No if you do that you will forget Fuko) Come to Fuko's sister's wedding. "Well I didn't go to the hospital and still forgot -Fuko- ... something?" People are forgetting Fuko. People forgetting Fuko. {Who tf is Fuko} Fuko gives people starfish. [Where tf did this star thing come from] People are forgetting her. People are forgetting her. _Are we going to forget Fuko_ People are forgetting her. People are forgetting her. Nagisa and Tomoya forgot her... We all came to *static* sister's wedding, who tf knows why. The end
Oh, she's back back back again. "Don't worry you don't need to remember me right now" Ok see you later... They never actually remember her. The end.
After Story- We meet Fuko for the first time. Fuko woke up from Fuko's coma. Fuko and Nagisa have never met each other. Fuko tries to kidnap child. Child declines. The end.

You describe life as if the only happy part is in your youth and the rest is all scary and dark. Thats very far from the truth. I wouldnt go back to being that young if I had the chance. In the end you give it all up and are at peace. Its only sad and depressing if you hold on and cant move on.

  • @VoxelLoop
    @VoxelLoop 3 года назад

    (Spoilers)
Ohh, I didn't realise the VN had a different ending, I thought it played out the same as the anime and it was a 'bad dream' like in the anime. The ending of the anime always bothered me a little as it felt like you'd spent so much time getting over the loss of Nagisa and finally getting your life back on track with being Ushio's dad again, but then the anime rips it all away from you seemingly to make a 'perfect ending' where Nagisa is also alive. It felt like it made all the build up with Ushio pointless in my mind.
Having it be a different route for the 'true ending' where Nagisa lives in the VN makes a lot more sense.
The ending I had in mind when watching the anime was that the wishes he had granted would allow Ushio to live at the last moment and it would end there. After all, the area Nagisa was brough to when she was dying when she was young had a hospital built on it, Ushio would even walk there herself. It would have felt appropriate for her to be in that hospital and have Tomoya's wish save her. :)
Regardless, amazing show. I wish more shows/visual novels would go into so much depth, have so much time pass, etc. This is a high school drama visual novel where it ends after the main character had his girlfriend die and has a kid, mourned the loss of his girlfriend, and then had his kid die. Absolutely amazing, there are few stories like it.

The anime had the same ending as the VN.
In both tomoya was granted a wish with the orbs. You can see it on the last episode when tomoya is looking out of the window and sees all the orbs

It may just be my weak heart, but I really feel offended by Clannad's drama. It's a masterpiece, but the story feels way too cruel for the wellbeing of one's psyche. One of my favorite anime, but wouldn't recommend at all to anyone unless they are really emotionally resilient or they watch with a close by person.
