Respect man, you sold me half way through the video telling telling the story, there’s no anime that’s made me feel like Clannad, I’ve been meaning to rewatch it but man it’s tough, especially ever since the studio that created it passed . May they Rest In Peace for giving me the greatest anime experience I’ve ever had, for making me go through life in the span of only 49 episodes .

that's the great thing about recommending this anime to people. I remember 9 or 10 years ago being on an avatar the last airbender forum and a buddy of mine had an anime review thread going and he recommended clannad and I had previously seen kanon so I was kinda prepared for what clannad had to offer. Then I found out about after story which nobody else had seen yet and binged every episode after nagisa's death. I went OFF on everyone in that thread telling them they HAD to watch it. A lot of the reviews for the first season were decent, some mediocre. The highschool drama didn't resonate too much with the older members but I knew that once they got into after story it was gonna mess them up. The graduation from youth to adulthood with the new stresses and worries that come with it is something that few shows ever do and do as fantastically as clannad and it's thanks to the first season showing our characters learn and grow and experience life that their later struggles are so much more impactful. I had so many people messaging me over the coming days and weeks telling me they sobbed themselves to sleep.

The whole story with Tomoya's father is such a deep one after you finish the show and rewatch it.
The man met the love of his life, worked hard for his family, lost his wife, and fell into despair. Started drinking too much, gambling in hopes of making extra money, and just ended up on a downward spiral until eventually he gets drunk one night and fights his preteen son, and fucks up his shoulder.
After that, the man just completely breaks, realizing what hes done to his only son, and spirals even further. Turning all his feelings inward on himself. watching the show, you see that Tomoya is angry at his father for being so distant and "cold" to him. "Why do you always treat me like some kind of stranger!?" Assuming his father simply doesnt care about him anymore, or even see him as a son at all.
But on your second viewing, you realize his father does love him, and also believes he is the worst thing to ever happen to his own son, and that hes no good for him, especially as a father. Which is why he is so passive when Tomoya leaves to live with the Furukawas. Because in his eyes, anyone is better for his son than him.
But after his son leaves, hes also dragged down by the pain that he not only lost his wife, but his own actions caused him to lose his job, his respect, his health, and his only child. Until later, he winds up arrested, and even that ends up greatly impacting his son negatively.
Its not until Afterstory, that Tomoya marries Nagisa, they begin to start a family, and he wants to step forward and be better than his father was, that the full story comes around to hit you in the gut.
Tomoya loses Nagisa, the love of his life, and he spirals into a depression. Starts smoking, starts drinking, gave up his daughter to her grandparents, and begins to turn his feelings inward on himself. Because in his eyes, Ushio is better with her grandparents than him.
Mirroring his own father. But where his Father did the best he could to raise Tomoya, and even held his own in the first few years, coming home in his breaks to give his son sweets; Tomoya gives up Ushio immediately and spirals like his dad a lot sooner.
And when Tomoya speaks with his grandmother in the country, he learns exactly what his father went through, from her. Understanding it all, not as the son his father failed, but as a fellow father going through the exact same tragedy, and seeing all the pieces slot together in his head.
His final reunion with his father, tomoya as an adult and father himself, cries openly in empathy for what his father went through. While Tomoya's father comforts him for the first time since Tomoya was a small child.
In the words of George Lucas, "Its like poetry, it rhymes."

This anime literally changed my life. As I was becoming an adult 9 years ago (age 17), I fortunately came across this anime by accidentally watching the scene where Yusuke and his band was having a gig when someone in a net cafe was streaming it. I quickly memorized the title and thought it was a cool band anime. I even watched the first 10 episodes of Clannad afterstory before realizing that there was a first season. I remember fondly that I loved every character and the stories that went with them. The jokes never failed to make me laugh. As a teen , I was able to understand a bit about what life is especially in after story. After watching this anime, for the first time in my life, I realized I only wanted to live a simple life with a family of my own and just be happy. To this day, this anime has become somewhat of a compass of my life. And I am really getting excited as I will be proposing to my girlfriend soon. 😊

This is one of the rare shows that for me, achieves true 'work of art' status. I was kinda lukewarm on season 1 as a whole, having already seen kanon and air beforehand and just kinda getting more of the same from clannad. Then season 2 comes around and pushes the story PAST high school (a rare thing indeed) and I started getting really interested. Nagisa's death, while sad, wasn't unexpected for me. I think what really got to me was seeing how Tomoya treated Ushio afterwards, culminating in his realization that he'd basically become his dad in all the ways he hated. I can't really explain it, but those are themes and story elements that are dealt with a maturity that I don't see in many other shows, and that puts it in a special category in my opinion.

    • @KazeTalks

Finished watching all of Clannad yesterday. I have to say that the first season, when you are first watching it is simply a quite tame/mild dive into high school. I have to say that it could be VERY difficult to watch, especially for younger audiences that havent gone through the high school experience. But it's all a massive foreshadowing of the tragedy that becomes Clannad ~After Story~. Clannad After Story not only shows you the harsh reality of adult hood, but the abandonment of dynamic, round characters that were friends with Tomoya. That's what hit me the hardest. The realization that your friends in high school wont be with you everyday anymore, and its eye opening to realize the harsh reality of this motif. Life with all your friends may never last: different paths may lead best friends apart. Great Video man, and love this anime. Has such great themes and messages throughout the story, and also shares a romantical comedic side to it also.

Light orbs appear whenever a person is happy because of another person's doings, and they can grant a person's wish if it's genuinely wanted. When Tomoya said that he should have never talked to Nagisa because he thought that it was his fault that she died. That was a wish, but it wasn't from his heart, so when he meets Nagisa again, he hesitates at first but then admits that she was the best thing to happen in his life and that it was definitely worth talking to her. That is why Ushio's light orb ignored his first wish and made the second one come true, where Nagisa survives during labor.

To be honest, when a close friend of mine suggested me this anime I didnt know what to expect after watching this series it changed my life. I was 14 when I watched this series didnt have a single plan for my future but after having to experience this masterpiece it changed my life. How life can be upredictable and how unsure we are but having to deal with it head on. The feeling of having to keep doing your best no matter how terrible your experiences are, and most importantly not losing yourself along the way. my realizations after this made me want to change my life for the best to commit no matter how unsure the things may seem everybody loses at life you just gotta learn how to pick your self up everytime. Clannad is the first anime that can make me cry a river. That scene where Tomoya finally take care of his dad and convice him to go home where Tomoya's grandmother waits crushed me the most. I have a bad relationship with my dad and watching that scene, it was like a huge slap for me that i should be close with him more rather than i spent most of my time with my friends.
I'm strongly agree about your point that then anime itself tells you about how important your family is as a human and we're going to face the up and down of life.

Happy Valentine's Day. I love Clannad After Story to absolute death, it really is one of those things you wish you could experience for the first time over and over again. This was the first story in any medium let alone anime to make my tears well up beyond the point of simply being misty-eyed, and thus made me realize that my heart wasn't made of stone (as cheesy as that sounds). Back in high school, I used to make fun of my friends who would watch anime because I always thought they were just cartoons and who could ever really learn anything from watching cartoons, right? Fast forward into my college years, I finally caved in and watched my first ever anime, Clannad and Clannad After Story after remembering that was all my friends were talking about in high school.
Yes, Clannad was a bit slow to pick up at first, but I didn't have much expectations. I only continued watching it as if to prove myself right--that it would be a waste of time. But it wasn't. The music, the visuals, and the overall storytelling got me hooked. And once I reached Clannad Afterstory, it was a whole different emotion. I can't ever say that I can look at the true value of family and life the same way after that. No other anime has left such an impact in my life and no other song (Dango daikazuko) can bring such a nostalgic feeling 5+ years from when you last heard it.
Clannad Afterstory is definitely an influential masterpiece. And it sort of sucks that Clannad was my first anime because it set the bar so high that I can't even compare it to anything else.

I first watched Clannad and Afterstory when I was in high school at 17 back in the autumn/winter of 2012 and I teared up a few times (only time I've ever even teared up watching a movie/anime). I recently re-watched the show a few months back now that I'm 25 (Spring 2021) - I just suddenly got the urge after randomly seeing the Dango Daikazoku song on RUclips. Not only did I realise that the first season of Clannad was much better than I remembered it, but this time I cried for a few minutes twice whilst watching Afterstory. Even though I was 8-9 years older and I knew what was going to happen, it just hit me harder. I guess it's because as I've grown older and matured I've realised the value of family and how much more heart-breaking losing a family member is. I barely watch anime anymore, but I'll always have a special place for Clannad and Afterstory.

I wanted to watch this 10 years ago but a friend told me not to because it would break me. I've always been shy and tried hard not to cry because of how my family treated me, I was taught to keep my feelings to myself and not "be a baby". Fast forward to January 2024 and I decide to give it a go. At the end of almost every character arc I was crying my eyes out; Kotomi's arc was so bad that I broke down completely. Once I got to After Story and saw what happened to Nagisa after she gave birth I could not take it anymore, I was crying the most I ever have in my life as far as I can remember. I cried myself to sleep. After that point I'd tear up just seeing Nagisa during the intro. I thought it couldn't get any worse but then.. Ushio and Tomoya dying together... I lost it again. The tears would not stop. Clannad changed me; now I know it's OK to cry and I realised I enjoy emotional shows. I feel somewhat healed after it. Please watch it. I'm going to play the Visual Novels next.. I hope my heart can take it.

This is one of the best works of anime. It's so beautifully done that it makes you happy yet you feel like crying every time. Even though these are all characters, and animated too for that matter, each scene sinks deep in the heart when you think about Nagisas death, yet the heart rises up from the ashes when you think how pure was Tomoya's and Nagisa's love. It makes me cry, sometimes happily sometimes sadly when I look at ushios eyes, which are just like nagisas. Pure love ♡ no intimacy and wild scenes, just the purity in the heart.

I just finished watching Clannad and Clannad Afterstory for the first time the other night and the anime left me an emotional wreck. I avoided this anime mainly due to the visual style with the super huge Moe eyes and my disinterest in slice of life anime. The past few months I have gone on a Kyoto Animation bender and watched most all of their shows, naturally Clannad eventually followed. Now I am kicking myself for ignoring such an emotional masterpiece until now. Im getting worked up just writing this comment. Why is it so easy to get so invested in anime characters whereas in live action I have a much harder time connecting? I'm not one to get so weepy over a show or movie but just thinking about the last few episodes of Clannad hits me in the feels like nothing else. This series truly does deserve the title of Masterpiece.

Honestly when I first started watching Clannad I didn’t expect one bit that I would cry this much. I had heard that this was emotional but when I saw the fuko arc I thought that was it. Not gonna lie I teared up a bit in that arc and I found it really good, but I thought that would be it for the emotional part. It obviously wasn’t. Once Nagisa and Tomoya got married and pregnant I was pretty happy, and then they started talking about how Nagisa might die. I didn’t believe that whatsoever. Once Nagisa gave birth and died, I was shocked. I just couldn’t believe it. The feels hit me in the next episode when we found out 5 years had passed and that Nagisa was officially dead. I really didn’t think that the author would do something like that. And once we saw Ushio, that is when I broke. Tomoya seriously abandoned his daughter, the thing Nagisa died for. And then I cried for all the parts of ep 18. When she called him daddy, when we found out about the back story of his dad, when Tomoya tried to tell ushio about Nagisa, etc. I honestly could have never anticipated sobbing this much. After that in ep 19 when we saw Sanae crying, I broke again. The poor soul’s daughter died that young, her daughter’s husband is a mess, and she hadn’t cried one bit. Honestly after that I didn’t cry because I had no tears left. When the last episode came and ushio died, again I didn’t believe it, but then we went back in time 5 years and Nagisa didn’t die. i was extremely confused and happy at the same time. And that was the end of the masterpiece we call Clannad. To this day Clannad is the most I’ve cried in an anime EVER. The feels hit you like a truck, shatter you into tiny pieces and throw you in the trash. Clannad is the most beautiful emotional anime in the world. the emotions to the dialogues to basically everything, The way Clannad pieces everything together and puts itself out there is perfect. It is a masterpiece that only a few people in this world have been able to witness. Now don’t get me wrong, it has its flaws, but that doesn’t matter because its a masterpiece like no other, and the greatness waaaaayy surpasses the flaws. All I have left to say is that Clannad is an amazing masterpiece, and it doesn’t matter how strong you might be, it will make you cry like a little baby.

This series is put simply, one of the most precious pieces of literature and fiction to be ever put out to the masses, and I can't thank both Jun Maeda from Key and the staff from Kyoto Animation from bringing it to life in the best fashion possible.
Clannad is the quintessential series about the values of family, and splendors of life.

Yeah, when I started editing *THAT* scene, it got me a bit. Had to force myself to power through it. But was such a joy to express my thoughts too. Loved doing this one.

I only watched fight anime shows before and I decided to give Clannad & Clannad After Story a shot. I'm so impressed by Kyoto animation. I also read into the event 1 year ago when Kyoto studio got burned down and there was 36 victims. I'm so sorry for all those amazing people that lost their lives, their work will always be superb.
