Just wear your nice clothes. Even if no one else sees them, wear them for yourself, just to feel good. My daughter is five and doesn’t quite understand the idea of saving clothes for special occasions. To her, every day is special and I think she’s absolutely right about that.
I do the same with my nice china. Sure, it will probably get broken one day, but at least I will have used it and enjoyed it in the meantime. If it gets broken but has never been used, what was the point of having it?
I agree with her! It always makes me feel amazing to dress up a little, even if I'm just going to my usual coffee shop. Why not make day to day existence feel a little joyful and special? We're only alive once!!
If you’re like me, which I think we are in this department…. It’s really less about saving the clothes and more about wanting to be comfortable. Like why wear a tight fitted shirt with a real bra if I’m not seeing anyone and could be in a comfy bra and baggy shirt? As long as you get to wear the real clothes SOMETIMES when you do social stuff…I don’t see any problem with preferring comfort over “fashion”
This may be the most realistic declutter video I've ever seen with the worn out clothes as pajamas and old socks. It seems like a lot of declutter videos I watch involve parting with trendy clothes that were purchased within the past few years -- not clothes collected over a decade and swag from events. Thank you for the inspiration! As for jeans -- I just went to the Gap recently and got $30, straight-legged cotton jeans. I like them so far :)
I second the Gap suggestion. Pretty much all my jeans are from there and they’re one of the few places that offer mid rise jeans. (The high rise ones are why you can’t sit down) but I have a long torso so the high rise don’t work on me for many reasons lol but just sayin they’ve got a great variety and ALWAYS have really good sales of like 40-50% off. Their sale section is like good will prices. It’s amazing. Never buy a full price item at Gap. *the more you know shooting star
So true! I'm 27 and a few weeks ago, I decluttered a lot of my clothes and many of them I had as a teenager. Not all of them fit anymore, but they were still in good condition and I didn't want to get rid of them. But I collected all of them and donated. It felt so good. Not all of them were my style anymore and now I have room for Clothes, which will fit my Style more. But I saved my old Band T-Shirts and other sentimental Clothes. I don't want to depart from them just yet, but that's fine 😊
I do exactly the same thing, wearing old clothes so the "nice" ones stay nice! DUH!!!!!! But I'm 77, and finally I am wearing nice things just to feel good! I'm been downsizing for about 10 yrs (got a lot easier when my husband's dementia reached a point where he didn't care what I got rid of). 😁 I'm alone now, and got rid of my house and bought a 27' travel trailer to use as my base, and intend to spend 6 or 7 months of the year tent camping with my toy poodle. But I still have more than I need and am watching videos to get inspired to get rid of even more. Enjoyed the journey with your parents "stuff", and your general style. Keep up the good work!
Loved this video! Your remark about the closet's organization being something that you could control when there are so many things in the world we can't feels very pertinent.
Think about if someone unexpectedly wanted to stop by or if you wanted to make a quick trip out. If you're already dressed, you won't hold yourself back by being stressed. For me, when I didn't dress nice, I realized I was actually less likely to leave the house at all, whereas if I was already ready for the day, I could just zip out quickly 🤷♀️
"Saving" my clothes is something I struggle with deeply and have for decades. It hit me recently that by not wearing my nice things, I'm not showing up for my own life. I'm not giving myself the opportunity to enjoy casual moments and make them memorable. Wearing my "nice" things, I can enjoy "unspecial" moments more and meet others as my best self. I am now trying to challenge myself to wear 1 item a week that I would normally "save". It's been eye opening!!
Always wear the good stuff! 30 rock taught me “dress everyday like you could die in those clothes”. Dark, but I want to be a fashionable ghost if the chance arises.
I absolutely experience the purple shirt phenomenon. Some days I convince myself I should wear it because I bought it to wear it. Other days I think I would never be able to find something like it again. Partial solution I found was to try and buy higher quality clothes (not specific brands but you can tell from fabric and material) and that way it won’t age as fast as fast fashion and I can wear it a whole bunch
Thank you for all of your videos that just show just how human you are, simply existing. The pursuit of less is difficult, but you've inspired me to organize, clean, and let go of a lot of stuff that was just filling space. Thank you for being you, I appreciate every single video! ✨ I always leave your channel, just 'feeling better' 🙂
Soo refreshing that you‘re not one of those influencers who do this what feels like once a week and throw away everything they just bought even with tags on because it‘s in fashion or they receive too much stuff to wear!
I loved when you said, even though you love how a pair of jeans look, "They make me feel bad, so they go." Yes girl! You should feel amazing in your clothes!!!
Saving your nice clothes for a special day when your going to see people is so relatable😂😂 Plus I loveee your organising and decluttering videos like the one with your dad please make more!!!!❤️
Ohmygosh 10000% I do the same thing with my favorite clothes (aka not wearing them because I don't want them to get dirty/used/damaged). I'm so glad I'm not alone in this!
Definitely not the only one with 'too nice to wear often' :D Girl I was always saving stuff for special occasion until one day it got to me that it might go bad or not fit you anymore and you will not get to use it at all. Wear the lilac shirt, make great memories in it and take photos so you can later move it to you PJ pile :D I still do have some mental divide between my 'outside clothes' and 'stay at home when nobody sees you clothes' but now I actually like them all and they fit me and I enjoy them. It took me years to realize all that and I still fight with my old habits and I don't always win but it's worth it :) Use your best stuff because you deserve best! Would you tell your friend to wear a stained t-shirt instead of great one? :) Also fun fact - I literally started watching that digital decluttering course and thought "I'm gonna watch Makari's video first" :D
What you said around 1:55 is so relatable! When I was younger I did this a lot more (mostly with shoes) where I had a pair of shoes that my parents called "my nice shoes" and because I was told they were my nice shoes I would always think I couldn't just wear them every day because that's just what normal shoes are for - not nice shoes. This was problematic when growing up because by the time the nice occasions would come around and I'd try wear them, I'd have outgrown the shoes I really liked but never wore. Now that I'm an adult, I've changed my thinking specifically with shoes by only having 2-3 pairs and overusing all of them so I know I will never feel like I didn't wear them enough ever again. ... Clothes are still a problem (I don't have huge amounts of clothes but still have my go-to pieces of clothes which means I wear my other clothes less) but I still try wear most of them regularly because I realize saving them for special occasions isn't a great mindset to have and I've learnt from that
I absolutely do the thing where I'm perpetually saving the 'good clothes' for a special occasion like maybe marriage one day... Then I moved around so much I now have about 6 tees and a few blouses. I do need to buy some more as I generally have a 'one in, one out' approach but I had about '10 out' and didn't replace them!!
I have clinical OCD and I suffer from “don’t wear it, you’ll dirty it” as well. I love a pair of clean white shoes, but I’ll struggle for over a year to bring them out of the box. What helps me is 1. remembering that they’re meant to be worn and if I dirty them I can either wash them or buy new ones, and 2. I’ll great a fake occasion to wear a cute outfit so I can wear my cute stuff and once I’ve done that I tend to start wearing them more. Hope this helps!
I understand the "I don't want to wear this nice thing just at home and waste it," but I also think it's good to break out of that mentality. Bottom line: If it makes you feel good, wear it!! Feeling good about what you're wearing or how you look, even just at home, is a great way to boost your mood and even productivity. 💖 (And I'll whisper this part like a secret: If you didn't really do anything or go anywhere in your clothes, they're probably not actually dirty and you can just wear them again.)
The idea of wanting to save the special things makes SO much sense. Like I'll never use a face maks because I want to save it for a bad day, but that's silly!
Just started following you and the vibe is so good. These videos are so relatable. Loved the conversations with your dad in the decluttering your parents house video. ❤
I just found your channel and have enjoyed the decluttering videos- very inspiring. Your vocal delivery is excellent- no inappropriate use use of the word "like"and no extraneous "filler" words.
so I started watching this channel because you were riding a bike, now i'm watching because you are absolutely radiant, I like how you smile and your content touches the soul for some reason...keep going
Hi there… I stumbled across your channel and I’m so glad I did! I’ve just binged every single video of yours and they’re so fun, well-made, and really encouraging. I love the way you edit them and your sense of humour is brilliant. The relationship you have with your parents is beautiful to watch as well. I’m excited to see more and watch your channel grow. Keep up the amazing work!
Hi, Makari! Watching from Argentina :) I had to pause the video to leave a comment right at the part where you said, "I never wear them because I don't wanna get them dirty"-and SAME!! Recently, I had the chance to travel for a month, and I realized that I’ve been serving my clothes instead of letting them serve me. I was constantly worrying about sweating in them or "ruining them" in the wash, instead of just wearing them (literally what they’re made for!) and enjoying myself. Thankfully, I realized this early in my trip haha.
It’s not just you, I also find myself wearing older/unflattering tshirts etc because I’m ‘saving’ the nice ones or afraid they’ll get dirty… it’s a hard habit to break! Loved the video ❤
Yes. I also declutter when I am stressed. It is sooo nice to have everything organized to perfection. My closet has always been a problem though, cause what I noticed is that I would buy a lot of (not high quality) stuff because I have a really hard time spending like 40 euros on a shirt. However, I have now realized that most stuff I buy online (especially when I order the price from low to high) will leave my closet within a year or never be worn. I have some cheap items that I wear all the time, but buying more expensive stuff honestly keeps me from overflowing my closet. Not to mention that I like clothes, but I find it most important that I feel good when wearing them. That is why I now pay attention to the fabric and look on me, instead of only the cheap price tag that gives me a dopamine hit.
omg the purple shirt story is soooo relatable. I do it every time and I hate myself for it, cause girl, you spend good money on it, wear it for gods sake
The timing of this is impeccable cause I *just* decluttered my closet today too! I ended up with 3 garbage bags full of donations (yikes). It feels so goooood! Bye bye tight jeans, I am so over keeping things because I think I may one day fit in them again and then feel depressed any time I open my closet. Begone!
I buy new socks/undies/bras every year around new years - not a total overhaul every time, but replace the worst off with something that suits me better (style, soze, colour, etc). I feel like shoddy undergarments can sneak their way through multiple declutters so I make an effort to go through them on their own!
After two declutter videos, you've almost inspired me to start decluttering too... almost. I think I just need you to post one or two more. 😁 I will confess that I probably have several pieces of clothing that are older than you are. So I really need to start!
Hi Makari! I LOVE your videos, especially your biking ones. Your videos bring so much joy to my days. In terms of jeans, I have recently found the Hidden brand. I would recommend the Happi style, they are stretching, comfy, and so flattering!
Just posting my standard comment to say thank you for your lovely presence on youtube. You make amazing videos and I'm happy that subscriber count is going up.
I actually stopped buying white socks because they all end up very gray/dingy. Maybe try switching to black or gray 🤷🏽♀ Just an idea, I did the same and love it.
The WOW wide leg jeans from Old Navy are my fave! I didn't wear jeans for like 10 years because they've always been too tight and uncomfortable, and now I wear these almost every day!
This was so chill to watch, i've really been enjoying your videos and how wholesome they are. But side note!! Supercircle recycles socks/undies/bras/period panties for free. :) Just for you and anyone else who reads this.
I did the same! Wearing something old(er), mostly at home, and keeping other clothes for ‘special occasions’. So I also donated a lot, and only kept what I like. And, I am alive, which is ‘special occasion’ enough 😎😜
We are the same lol Can't waste the good shirts on no contact days lol Madewell and abercrombie and Fitch just buy the size that's a little looser in the waist. I've heard good things about Ginger and poppy too
Good jeans are a tough thing to find! I've been wearing jeans from the brand ONLY since I was a teen and even though I've had jeans from other brands, the ones from there are always my favourite. They fit my body well (I'm a pear shape, not sure how well they fit on others) and the material is very soft and stretchy. They're also quite affordable and from my experience, they last the same as stretchy Levi's (which are far more expensive).
I love your decluttering videos! Something I've found helpful for sentimental clothes I no longer wear is to treat them like mementos, so I've got a box of clothes in the attic like I would with a box of pictures :)
I think it's ok to be sentimal about clothes, and make a distinction between gifts (Marie Kondo said the moment it was handed over was the moment the person conveyed their feelings, not the item itself which is very freeing) ... sentimental items (for which the state doesn't matter, unless you're like my mom keeping baby clothes by the kilogram) ... regretted purchases ... clothes you genuinely enjoy wearing - and those which deserve some rest after you enjoyed a bit too often wearing them. I tried pretending to be super objective about my clothes, after being too sentimental to throw/give anything away before, but it's a nice balance to be aware, sentimental, and still do them right - even if it means wearing your purple shirt when no one is around to admire it :D
When I was a kid, my parents were gifted towels by their grandchildren that were embroidered with Nanny and Poppy. The Poppy towel was emerald green. I'm a redhead and I wanted that Poppy towel so bad, so my Da gave it to me. He's passed on now, but I still have the towel and I treasure it. Not because it's pretty, but because it's a sign of his love.
I think I'm very close to the theory of minimalism, because I have 3 jumpers in 2 colours (ecru & burned black), 2 t-shirts in the same colours and 2 boyfriend jeans. Even 6 j are a lot for me because I get confused about which one to wear almost every time. A year ago I had 2 j and it was really cool not to have to worry about it. But I also have a sports kit of 3 things for the gym.
I used to do the same thing. Wear the gross clothes so I save the nice ones for days with more people. I did the same thing and got rid of anything stained, grossly oversized, or I didn’t really like. It’s really nice to feel at least decent in anything in my closet.
I was the same way! All my white performance socks ended up blue, grey, or beige! Only socks that I have found the most versatile (sports, everyday and even firefighting!) are the Danish Endurance athletic socks! I get the white ankles for everyday wear and gym use, but the black crew socks for firefighting (our fire boots are taaaaall like Baffin winter boots). Some how, thrown in the wash with new born baby stained clothes, sand, dirt, soot and grass stains galore, they come out perfect every time ! They also have the R and L on the socks, but aren't like some brands *cough cough* (Lulu) that feel uncomfortable if you accidentally put them on the wrong feet. I think i got mine on Amazon (i live in Canada) for $35 for 3 pairs. Honestly I got 2 packs of the white ankles (6 pairs total) and 1 pack of the black crew rise (3 pairs total) and have gotten rid of every other pair i own! 10/10 recommend and although i wish I was sponsored by them, I am just a mere 27 year old consumer who enjoys good value for simple things. Hope this helps on the hunt! (PS - they also have an anti-hole warranty which i have yet to use because they are THAT good! ) Recommended by a 27 year old Canadian new-mom who would rather live for the big things than worry about not-white white socks :D Love your channel and your approach to life, wish my PJ shirt collection was that awesome also :)
I recently bought Mustang jeans and while they are a bit expensive at around CHF 80, they are comfortable and have POCKETS, like seriously deep pockets, my phone fits in there!! Highly recommend!
I just discovered Silver Jeans. The are comfy and stretchy while still being nice quality fabric! I found mine at Winners so I'm not sure how expensive they are new but I strongly suggest!
Also, i dont have the purple shirt problem for me, HOWEVER, i buy nice clothes for my kids just to never put them on them (they are under 3), waiting for a special occasion that never comes, just for my kids to outgrow the special clothes and never even wear them 😭 so im trying to always put the nice clothes on now, every day is a special day!!!
One brand of jeans I love is called "Kings of Indigo". Their products are sustainable and organic. The clothes are fantastic and will last you a lifetime!
For me, old socks come in quite handy for cleaning bike chains. Saves buying cloths just to get oily. Also, my sock drawer *may* be the most organised part of my life...
Glad I'm no the only one, I don't use clothes that I like because I dont want to damage them by washing them a lot. So I end up with a ton of clothes I love but not use, and when I declutter my closet I can see most of my clothes are almost new
I was having the same struggle with jeans & bought a flattering/comfy pair from Quince. For socks, invest in Bombas...overhauling my socks with Bombas was lifechanging!
I agree with bombas socks being an amazing life choice however I recommend the striped/color blocked ones not the solid color ones. The solid color ones really struggle to get clean in the wash. It’s less visible on the color blocked ones.
ALWAYS dress up for YOURSELF... you ARE the most special ❤ person you'll see today and every day, and today is a special day...every day is a special day, and should be treated that way! ❤
Great job! I thought you might break the 7 categories into their own days to pace yourself but you really pushed through and managed to get it done! You seemed to be able to make decisions very quickly which helps. For anyone watching who is overwhelmed by the piles at the end, just know that you don't have to do it all at once, a little bit at a time is still progress!
matching hangers? didn't even know that was a thing. I'm gonna pretend i didn't hear that :) your channel is inspiring. I started stretching every night as I watch YT instead of just sitting.
For comfy baggy jeans try GongShow - they’re built for hockey players. Else if you’re ever in the UK, Next do decent jeans of various widths from skinny + slim fit through boyfriend and super-flares
Just wear your nice clothes. Even if no one else sees them, wear them for yourself, just to feel good. My daughter is five and doesn’t quite understand the idea of saving clothes for special occasions. To her, every day is special and I think she’s absolutely right about that.
awe that is too sweet ♥️
Yes. I don't believe anyone on their death bed has ever regretted using the things they liked as often as they did.

Omg! The saving the good clothes and wearing the clothes you dont like as much is so freaking relatable!
I'm here for makari and her bright, beautiful energy. She could make anything and I'd watch so long as she stays herself.
This is such a beautiful comment ❤ It’s why I’m here too 😊

Yes, I'd like more of these declutter videos, please! Thank you! 💛 (P.S. All of your videos are great. Please continue to share what YOU enjoy!)
Yay I'm glad you enjoy them! :) And thanks for the kind words
Thank you for all of your videos that just show just how human you are, simply existing.

You’ve got to be the only person who is not decluttering late at night when they should really sleep
Actually I am decluttering at 11 at night….

i was just rewatching your video where you decluttered your parents house, im so excited abt this LOL
I audibly GASPED when you said you're getting rid of your blundstones... Great work breaking free of the peer pressure!
Omg same!!! But mostly because if I could live in mine 365 days a year I would 🤭
The idea of wanting to save the special things makes SO much sense. Like I'll never use a face maks because I want to save it for a bad day, but that's silly!
This is my new comfort channel, your videos are amazing chill and inspiring.
I recommend anything Wrangler for jeans - they have SO many different cuts and types and sizes so there's something for everyone!
Just started following you and the vibe is so good. These videos are so relatable. Loved the conversations with your dad in the decluttering your parents house video. ❤
I'm living for these decluttering videos! Also, you are 1000% relatable and I love that :)
I just found your channel and have enjoyed the decluttering videos- very inspiring. Your vocal delivery is excellent- no inappropriate use use of the word "like"and no extraneous "filler" words.
For jeans I really recommend Madewell! They even have a curvy line that's perfect for being actually comfortable to sit in!
so I started watching this channel because you were riding a bike, now i'm watching because you are absolutely radiant, I like how you smile and your content touches the soul for some reason...keep going
I love these organizing videos, they're so fun to watch, and they really motivate me to organize

Abercrombie curve love!! Literally the best jeans ever
I just love your energy, you're so engaging to watch and listen to

Recently, I had the chance to travel for a month, and I realized that I’ve been serving my clothes instead of letting them serve me. I was constantly worrying about sweating in them or "ruining them" in the wash, instead of just wearing them (literally what they’re made for!) and enjoying myself. Thankfully, I realized this early in my trip haha.
#1 jeans recommendation is the Levi’s 501 ribcage straight jeans. I bought a second pair they’re so good!!
thanks, I'll check them out. do they also work for someone without a butt ? I don't have the makari figure... 😬
My FAVOURITE JEANS EVER are from American Eagle, they’re loose, yet look good and don’t fall down! I would highly recommend!
Congratulations on 100k 🎉 one of my fav content creators at the moment! Keep up at the great work ❤
As someone who has matching hangers, and is methodical about my closet-TRUST ME IT MATTERS, it gives the an air of being ART 😍
omg the purple shirt story is soooo relatable. I do it every time and I hate myself for it, cause girl, you spend good money on it, wear it for gods sake
GIRL when you redid the statement about your shoes lolll. So relatable though, my toes too kiss the pavement because I wear my shoes down xD
Sent me
The timing of this is impeccable cause I *just* decluttered my closet today too! I ended up with 3 garbage bags full of donations (yikes). It feels so goooood! Bye bye tight jeans, I am so over keeping things because I think I may one day fit in them again and then feel depressed any time I open my closet. Begone!
Hello Makari!!! I do exactly the same 😂 and this year, I decluttered my closet and started to wear the clothes I chose 😂❤
1:33 I sooo identify with the “not wasting an outfit” issue 🫠 we can be slightly psychotic together 😅
Y’all should watch Hannah Louise Postons recent video about how she became someone who dresses nicely on normal days!
I just started watching you today and I love your good vibes. And I need you to know your smile is so cute & contagious!!!
Thank you so much for putting out this video! It has inspired me to add "organize closet" to my weekend task list! 😅
Hi Makari! I LOVE your videos, especially your biking ones. Your videos bring so much joy to my days. In terms of jeans, I have recently found the Hidden brand. I would recommend the Happi style, they are stretching, comfy, and so flattering!
Oh my gosh! I'm the same with my nice clothes! I only keep them for special occasions! I hope I can change my ways! I'm nearly 60 🥹😅
Wow! You made decluttering a very relaxing process! Well done!
Just posting my standard comment to say thank you for your lovely presence on youtube. You make amazing videos and I'm happy that subscriber count is going up.
Gap has jeans with a lot of stretch, so they're flattering but you can sit in them!
I actually stopped buying white socks because they all end up very gray/dingy. Maybe try switching to black or gray 🤷🏽♀ Just an idea, I did the same and love it.
I am so happy for the explosion of your channel!! Good job
You have inspired me to finally sort my bookshelf, which I have been dreading forever. So thanks for that! :)
Ditch the plastic hangers, and use the old thin wire hangers. You can hold at least 30% more clothing in the same space (or use 30% less space)
oof I thought it was the only one who felt like I had to save clothes for a good day!! this is SO relatable!!!
DUER jeans are great! Super stretchy and comfortable while also being flattering!
I needed a Makari video today! Thank you!
We are the same lol Can't waste the good shirts on no contact days lol
Madewell and abercrombie and Fitch just buy the size that's a little looser in the waist. I've heard good things about Ginger and poppy too
Nice work! My suggestion is don’t deprive yourself the simple pleasure of matching hangars!
velvet type hangers are the true MVP - stops clothes from slipping!
This is so inspiring and motivating! Thank you!
Sooooooooooo satisfying! And I think everyone secretly needs a "Mr Espe" sweatshirt.
I’m seconding “Mr Espe” swag 😂
I also ‘save’ clothes for “better days”. They also don’t get worn.
Rocking cut away tune
I’ve done that with my winter clothes. A lot of jumpers that have gone bitty are gone.
Thats a great idea!!
Tbh, I like doing such clean ups 😊 It feels so relieving and refreshing
Glad I'm no the only one, I don't use clothes that I like because I dont want to damage them by washing them a lot. So I end up with a ton of clothes I love but not use, and when I declutter my closet I can see most of my clothes are almost new
I was having the same struggle with jeans & bought a flattering/comfy pair from Quince. For socks, invest in Bombas...overhauling my socks with Bombas was lifechanging!
Okay noted! Thank you! :)
I agree with bombas socks being an amazing life choice however I recommend the striped/color blocked ones not the solid color ones. The solid color ones really struggle to get clean in the wash. It’s less visible on the color blocked ones.
@@katiehayes8596 for me bombas always get holes in the heel pretty quickly. i have better luck with stance
Love this video. You are so full of fun.
AGGHHHHH you hit the nail on the head with "not wasting good clothes" on ordinary days. i need to get to work on my stuff immediatly.
I love decluttering. 💙
matching hangers? didn't even know that was a thing. I'm gonna pretend i didn't hear that :) your channel is inspiring. I started stretching every night as I watch YT instead of just sitting.
love that you keep pants with additional holes int hem but get rid of perfectly functionalling socks lol
Not this video being uploaded when I’ve just started decluttering my house yesterday. I’m excited :)
For comfy baggy jeans try GongShow - they’re built for hockey players.
Else if you’re ever in the UK, Next do decent jeans of various widths from skinny + slim fit through boyfriend and super-flares
Another awesome, real video Makari
