Hey everyone! I wanted to make a comment right away to highlight that I was able to make this video and find the joy in cooking again because I am in the privileged position where I have: - no dependants - free time - a positive relationship with food - and the means to afford the rising cost of groceries I also want to flag that the ramen packet in the thumbnail is not meant to portray “bad” or “unhealthy” food, rather it is meant to show a “low effort” and “low in nutrients” meal (I love ramen in all forms). There is a time and place for all types of food and I think Ethan Cheblowski’s video [here](ruclips.net/video/hapjShCi254/видео.html) does a great job at explaining this. Anywho. I hope you have a great day and I’ll see you in the next video! 😄♥
I love that you are aware of these things but really viewers will adapt the recipes to meet their tastes and needs - imo you worry a bit too much about what people define as healthy and what people think, this will cause you a ton of stress and anxiety trying to make everything perfect! My takeaway is that this is to help motivate people to cook and would be an improvement to many people’s lives. Thanx for sharing.
You know what I really love about your channel it’s the fact that it’s real- it’s real life stuff- and your creativity of course which just makes the videos a whole lot more fun to watch. I love the idea for each stage of your cooking adventure you used the recipe book and added titles to it- it really gave it a movie/ book feel.
About 3 years ago now I realized that figuring out what I was going to eat for dinner every day was giving me legitimate existential dread lol. I was complaining about it and I mentioned missing my school lunch menu that I had as a kid where I could just look on the fridge and see that it’s Wednesday so lunch is turkey tetrazzini. So I basically decided to make myself a school lunch menu. Every Sunday I plan what I’ll eat for dinner for the rest of the week and I put it in a cute little spreadsheet I designed and print it out and hang it on the fridge. Then I check all the recipes and make a list for shopping to buy all the stuff I need for the week. (That way I don’t realize when I’ve already started cooking that I don’t have any peanut butter lmao) It has solved my existential food dread and I’ve successfully done this every week for almost 3 years now. Highly recommend 👍🏼
Great insights!! Funny how we seem to want ‘school’ to end, and move on. But we forget some of those routines that worked for us all those years! Breakfast and lunch planning, setting clothes out the night before, daily ‘gym’ class, quiet reading, recess….
You do know that you’ve set yourself up to perfect the banana cream pie now!! But having said that, any banana cream pie is freakin amazing…. And when it’s made with such love and laughter, and by the most loved one, it’s freakin (and so unbelievably hecking cool!) the best of the best!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Love, Momsie
Pie crusts are so hard to get right. Everyone's oven/RH/water are a bit différent, ending up with recipes that don't work well... so buying premade is def the way to go for me.
We love a Makari cooking moment! Ethan Cheblowski is so goated and his recipes rule. Also thank you SO much for making a cooking video that doesn’t mention any type of calorie counts! Hard to find cooking content out there that’s truly safe for those recovering from disordered eating :)
Hi I just wanted to comment and say that your channel has quickly become one of my favorites on RUclips, keep doing what you're doing and I hope everything goes well for you!!! When it comes to simple recipes honestly the oven is your friend! So much can be done in the oven that requires minimal effort (but more time), especially if you're only cooking for 1-2 people!
Hi Makari ! Love your videos, specially the ones where you try new things and make new habits. And I would loce for you to do some kind of "follow up" videos : like X months later, do you still read every day, do you walk more than before, do you use your phone less, etc ? I think that would be super interesting to see the long time effects of your challenges.
Hey Makari, I love your stuff, you're doing awesome! I'm gonna let you in on a little secret tho... I don't watch it because I'm super into cooking, or books or whatever it is, I watch your stuff because of you! Your bubbly, quirky, slightly awkward, and kind personality on screen means that whatever the topic of the video is, I enjoy it! Keep on doing amazing, you're inspiring! -Oli (all the way from South Australia)
A very cute video and such an important topic! Food is so important to our lives, but it is a huge amount of effort. Watching you try to heal your relationship with the kitchen was so fun! I love the banana cream pie as well, and I'm sure your mom was super appreciative!
Every video of yours is a delight - and you’ve inspired me to get back in the kitchen and try again because I may suck at cooking but ans you say only way to make progress is to keep going!
It's so wild how your videos end up being relevant to my life as you release them. I recently started stretching because of your stretching challenge video, and I've been thinking a *lot* about cooking more recently! Thank you for continuing to inspire us ✨
I always tried to find new ways to cook easy and delicious meals. I love watching your videos. It’s my first week in Victoria, I’m trying differents groceries stores and see with one I like more.
I can't believe how much detail you put into editing these videos. Awesome. And thank you very much, that actually inspired me to find some more time to cook/bake something more myself.
There is something so comforting about you and your content. I found you randomly when I wasn't feeling great about myself and thanks to your videos, I've been trying things out, not caring if it works out or not but I try my best to enjoy it. The way you talked about how you stopped cooking after life became a lot resonanted to me. It has only been two weeks since you posted this, but it also has been two weeks of me cooking homemade meals every day. I haven't even thought about getting take out, instead I think of what I can make when I go back home. So thank you very much for being honest and being you.
I'm really enjoying your videos and sense of humour (as well as technical ability in terms of editing and timing, I know how much work it takes to make it look effortless). Can't wait to see what's next for you, from a new Irish fan.
I can really relate to falling off healthy habits and hobbies because of life events. I recently got back on track after years of struggling with depression and anxiety and Cooking is also the last habit I need to get back!! I used to love cooking so much 😭
Anyone else dying for a video that covers what Makari workouts are in the gym? Because I sure am. I’ve been inspired to do my budget again, walk way more, get off the interwebs, work from the office, and now cook… now I need that positive and fun inspiration for the gym.
Go, girl, you are awesome! You really are. I am trying to learn to drag myself to do things I know I should, like cycling - which is how I found your channel. Thanks for sharing again today.
I despise cooking but I know that healthy foods make me feel so much better too! This is a perfect kick in the keester to have a mindset shift and finding joy in cooking - thanks!
I don’t follow many RUclipsrs but I find myself checking to see if there’s anything new on your channel. This was so fun. You have such a great mindset!
Makari you seriously are just the coolest person. I love your energy, your personality, your creativity, ur just a shnazzy person hahah. I’m 25 and still looking for my Makari! The bar is high lol
I am stretching regularly with Tom, aware of Ethan Chlebowski, and ready to make that pasta dish. Now I learn you wrote a heartwarming book as well. Thanks for all the inspiration!
I love finding quick meals that take almost no effort... One of my faves is salmon, pour on some teriyaki sauce, marinade for 20 mins or so, get some rice cooking (I use a rice cooker), then salmon into the airfryer for 13 mins at 200deg C, quickly make a salad or steam some veg. Bit of kewpie mayo over everything. Delish!
Makari, I always look forward to your videos and I am grateful that I get to learn from you - not just ways to challenge myself, but also ways to show up bravely and vulnerably. Thank you! I have enjoyed the Run Fast Eat Slow collection of cookbooks, especially the Rise and Run cookbook. Great options for nutrient-dense foods that are easy to meal prep!
New subscriber and I have only seen a handful of your videos mostly about biking but I've learned a thing already there will always be a bag of Cheese Puffs in the nearby vicinity haha!
Love this video so much! It's such a satisfying feeling to be able to get back into something you used to enjoy like exercising, reading, or cooking again 😁 Great job on getting back on the horse, cooking up some DELICIOUS looking meals, and a big happy birthday to Momma Espe 🥳🎉 PS: Your dad's wise ass shirt is fantastic lmao
You are hilarious, and not even 1 minute in and I've already learned some wildly valuable stuff (ethan chlebowski's vid, cook well website and the mouth full newsletter, awesome!). Keep it up girlfriend! :D
I'm also getting back to cooking after two years of "sad" and starting to find joy in it too! Jack Ovens has a great RUclips channel with simple recipes, I've been enjoying making and eating the garlic mushroom pasta every week 🤤
Hi Makari and everybody! Your videos make me so happy! I'm a registered dietitian, food/cooking is my jam (what a pun lol). Here's a simple recipe I like to make for breakfast: Sautee some swiss chard and onion in a pan with a drizzle of oil. Once onion is soft, add some eggs, sundried tomato and smoked gruyere (or other smoked cheese). Slap it on a whole wheat english muffin and BAM! You're done! I sometimes make this up in a baking dish and cut it into squares, easy meal prep. Portion of everything depends on you and your hunger factor.
This video came in the perfect time, it's been a while since the last time I entered the kitchen with excitement and you have inspired me to fall in love with cooking again P.S. Your videos never fail to make me smile, you've made my day
Theres something so wholesome about watching another Canadian grocery shop at places i know buying foods that i can recognize.. i guess im just so use to seeing American content this is a nice welcomed change😅❤
I'm subscribing. Your content is so inspiring, i loved your cycling videos so much they make me remember the joys of exploring the outdoors on my mtb, i love your drive to try different things and inspire a healthy lifestyle through food and exercise 😊 please keep up the great work ❤
As a freelancer, one of the reasons I like cooking is because it marks the end of my working day. I stick on some music or a podcast and my partner sometimes helps too (we have a tiny kitchen so if it's a super easy meal, it's actually easier to do it by myself haha). Also, I meal plan - I have a note of all the recipes I've tried and we like that I can refer to to choose 7 meals, always including one super easy meal for when I don't feel like cooking, and I use a grocery delivery service because I hate going to the shop. Maybe some of those tips will help you 😊
I never miss a video from you, you're amazing, perfect balance of real and inspiring! And wow, your parents are so lovely and so fucking pretty, just like you!!!!! I hope they know that :)
I've found that secret to leveling up any tacos is to make corn tortilla's from scratch! If you get a tortilla press, it's pretty easy and totally worth it. It's hard to go back once you've done it!
I love your channel so much and I am also getting into cooking (for the first time though). This is really inspirational for trying new recipes! I hate trying something like pie that I think is hard because I’m scared to fail! Thanks for showing your failure and how you worked through it! You’re amazing!
I love this for you! Whenever I want to make something simple but super delicious, I make summer rolls (rice paper) with peanutbutter-soy sauce. Also Buddha bowls. For quick meals I often make salads with crunchy tofu (you could use chicken or shrimp too). And a little prepping recommendation: Try ingredient prepping, where you prep veggies, sauces and carbs, and then when you cook, you just throw everything together and make the protein. When I do that I also make salad dressings and put them in squizee bottles ready to use. Good luck on your journey with cooking!!
I swear by the ProHomeCooks channel. Its similar to Ethan Cheblowski, but another dude, different recipes and another setup. From very easy recipes and mealprep to very intricate stuff. Hope you enjoy!
So many good routines! Thank you for inspiring us. I've started running 2 weeks ago and I wanna say you pushing yourself to have good routines really "influenced" me to do the same. See what I did there? lol. Im a chef, and I am very proud of your cooking skills!!!
I feel you on the crust 😂 I made a pot pie from scratch and my husband and I BOTH tried to make gluten free crust and had to toss it in the garbage. Then we made the crust with regular flour and it still was awful but it tasted fine when it was all said and done 😂 I’ve been on a huge vintage cookbook kick since I was 20 so I have about 20 cookbooks with old recipes that are all made “from scratch” and I plan to eventually make all the recipes 😂 I hate cooking though LOL
I feel ya too! One of my friends makes a large batch of pastry dough and freezes them, ready and waiting! I’m not that organized. Lol. But my easiest go to is to take a carton of Costco hash browns, rehydrate, press into large baking or pie pan, and add your toppings or fillings!! A little healthier…faster…less clean up!
i love this video AND to cook - so i'll share the easiest one pan recipe i know: bean chili with avocado, green herbs, lemon, quick pickled onions, and some tortillas/rice what to do (serves 3-4) - bake 3/4 onion, go for caramelised brown vibes - make a quick pickle from the rest of the onion: thinly slice the rest of the onion, put in a glass, cover with vinegar (rice vinegar or balsamic vinegar), smash it with a fork, and wait for 10 minutes - note that the onion should be thinly sliced and that you should really drench it in acid for it to work. There are many ways to make a quick pickle,. if you don't have balsamic or rice vinegar, just use any acid, and add some sugar to taste. - back to the chili where the onions are now brown - throw in any veg you like (2 peppers are great) - the more you let this brown, the sweeter your chili will be - throw in some garlic, don't be shy, i usually put in a clove per person - be careful it doesn't burn - throw in spices like cumin and coriander and paprika (a lot) (like 1/2 table spoon each) - let these sizzle a bit in the pan - be careful it doesn't burn - throw in tomato (a can will do) to stop the spices and garlic from burning and deglaze the brown onions - throw in 2-3 cans of beans whatever kind (i usually like kidney and black beans for this) plate up; - prepare your plate with some chili, avocado, sprinkle with a leafy herb (coriander/mint/basil or parsely), squeeze about 1/2 lemon or lime per plate, and add some quick pickled onions - Rice, tortilla, or tortilla chips are great carb parings in general, people who are new to cooking should just understand that a few things will make your food taste better instantly: caramlising your veg and making sure you have enough flavours by tasting and adjusting: there should always be something salty, sweet, acidic in it. this is vegan btw, but has lots of protein because of the beans (:!
I think you should shift to using only wooden cutting boards instead of the plastic ones. The plastic ones get plastic particles in your veggies/meat when you're cutting or scraping on the board.
Now it’s been 3 months since you did your video on cutting down on your phone usage, it may be interesting to do an update to see how you and your dad have been doing with screen time, whether it’s continued to be low or has risen back to previous levels
Hey everyone! I wanted to make a comment right away to highlight that I was able to make this video and find the joy in cooking again because I am in the privileged position where I have:
- no dependants

Thanks Emily! I appreciate you 😍
Those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind, words to live by!

9:49 Did your mom just give us all the bird 🖕🏼? LOL. Jump scare
nah just me😆
I swear by the ProHomeCooks channel. Its similar to Ethan Cheblowski, but another dude, different recipes and another setup. From very easy recipes and mealprep to very intricate stuff. Hope you enjoy!
I can’t wait to get home and watch this in 4k
I hope you enjoy! :)
Then we made the crust with regular flour and it still was awful but it tasted fine when it was all said and done 😂
I’ve been on a huge vintage cookbook kick since I was 20 so I have about 20 cookbooks with old recipes that are all made “from scratch” and I plan to eventually make all the recipes 😂 I hate cooking though LOL

The sarcastic tapping on the tofu.... 😂.... You're a gem!!! When will influencers finally stop doing that?
i love this video AND to cook - so i'll share the easiest one pan recipe i know: bean chili with avocado, green herbs, lemon, quick pickled onions, and some tortillas/rice
what to do (serves 3-4)
- bake 3/4 onion, go for caramelised brown vibes
- make a quick pickle from the rest of the onion: thinly slice the rest of the onion, put in a glass, cover with vinegar (rice vinegar or balsamic vinegar), smash it with a fork, and wait for 10 minutes - note that the onion should be thinly sliced and that you should really drench it in acid for it to work. There are many ways to make a quick pickle,. if you don't have balsamic or rice vinegar, just use any acid, and add some sugar to taste.
- back to the chili where the onions are now brown
- throw in any veg you like (2 peppers are great) - the more you let this brown, the sweeter your chili will be
- throw in some garlic, don't be shy, i usually put in a clove per person - be careful it doesn't burn
- throw in spices like cumin and coriander and paprika (a lot) (like 1/2 table spoon each) - let these sizzle a bit in the pan - be careful it doesn't burn
- throw in tomato (a can will do) to stop the spices and garlic from burning and deglaze the brown onions
- throw in 2-3 cans of beans whatever kind (i usually like kidney and black beans for this)
plate up;
- prepare your plate with some chili, avocado, sprinkle with a leafy herb (coriander/mint/basil or parsely), squeeze about 1/2 lemon or lime per plate, and add some quick pickled onions
- Rice, tortilla, or tortilla chips are great carb parings
in general, people who are new to cooking should just understand that a few things will make your food taste better instantly: caramlising your veg and making sure you have enough flavours by tasting and adjusting: there should always be something salty, sweet, acidic in it.
this is vegan btw, but has lots of protein because of the beans (:!
Fantastic! Thanks for sharing!
Loved the video!

Loved this!
We needed a pie review from Larry.
Dangit 😂
9:10 The slomo reaction shot said it all.
@@jennyjenkins877 I thought I looked pretty sincere?? ☺
Perfect timing ❤
I'm glad
