You have to really have a lot of organization and stick to it. I had a family and worked 50+ hrs a week as a Special Educator. Every Sunday starting at 1 pm I was in the kitchen making chili, stew, casseroles, bread to feed us all week. It was so much easier than coming home exhausted after a long day with students, my own child to raise, and a husband that was on the go as a school administrator. We would eat together then I would grade papers most of the evening. It was the only way I could keep ahead. Just find a designated time and cook away.😊
An added bonus in making things at home is using far less plastic! Also, when I make yogurt, I always add milk powder to up the protein, and it helps with texture as well. If I expect to be using it in dessert recipes, I’ll either use whole milk powder or cream, but skimmed milk powder is great for standard use.
I bought 15 kg rolled oats this past weekend and then made granola which I gifted to my sisters as a thank you when we visit them a couple of days this week. Love homemade everything!
I highly recommend using the tortilla recipe from grains in small places! They are 100% freshly milled flour, and they are just as soft and supple as with AP. Might be worth a look!
I made the Farmhouse on Boone tortillas last week. I did 2 other recipes and then put everything in the refrigerator. The tortillas were in there for 3 days and my family said they were the best ones I have ever made. I also did 50/50 fresh milled and all purpose flour.
Those asking for the culture for yogurt. For the 1st time just add 2 oucnes full milk yogurt as the starter. Then, reserve about 2 oz and freeze to use for the next batch. Totally worth it, best yogurt hands down
I started doing this several months ago bc my boys love yogurt. You can just add store-bought yogurt or get yogurt cultures online. We spend a 3rd of the cost. Just remember to refresh your yogurt cultures every 3-4 batches.
Suggestion for melting your coconut oil. Put it in a jar with a lid. Put hot water in a bowl, pot or whatever. It doesn't need to be full just enough for the jar to sit in. It does take a bit longer but it allows the coconut oil to hold its nutritional profile that makes it so beneficial for our bodies. Just a suggestion in case you are interested.
@orphaholen9023 it's going to melt however it's make up is very susceptible to absorbing the microwave energy and the heat doesn't distribute evenly. This happens because of the molecule it is made up of. And just as with heating directly in a pot affects the nutrition make up of the coconut oil, so does the mircrowave. This is why it's very important to be cautious of the type of coconut oil you purchase.
Correction; store bought corn tortillas have a lot of added chemicals too. It's cheaper to just buy corn tortilla corn flour and much easier and faster than flour. Just mix corn flour, a pinch of salt and warm water. A tortilla press makes ituch easier and faster. Much healthier too.
Wow that was a really good video, I'm not great in the kitchen but I think I can manage afew of those recipes and build my confidence 😀 thanks from New Zealand
It’s cheaper and good/minimal ingredients. I’m into sourdough recipes for some things too but I also bake with yeast because in my opinion it’s still 3-4 ingredients vs store bought version with over 20 ingredients and it’s a way better option than store bought .
Traditionally, flour tortillas are made with lard. I use part lard and part butter, but I whip it up until it's light and airy. Then flour, salt, baking powder, and hot water. I won't use olive oil because it doesn't allow the dough to roll out well, and the flavor isn't as good
I make no pound no fail sourkraut. I use fido jars. 3 tbl salt for 5lbs shredded cabbage. Fill fido jars and put in cool dark place for 5 to 6 weeks. Although cabbage makes its own liquid. You do not need to cover cabbage with a brine, using fido jars. You also dont need to burp fido jars. They are self burping. I make up 30 jars at a time and they just sit in cool dark basement until I need a jar. No mold no fuss no problem. Google no pound no faill sourkraut. A ferment needs to sit for 5 to 6 weeks in order to get the full benefits of the nutrion.
Give sourdough another chance, its way more flexible than everyone makes out. I was so intimidated about the rules and timing for making sourdough when I first started. The more you make it the easier it gets. There are so many different ways to make it and they all work.
The best thing is to start with something easy, like cooking dry beans and freezing. them, rather than canned. Make a batch of bisquick, pancake, or onion soup mix. These all use common ingredients, too.
Love this! I've been wanting to make more things from scratch, but it always felt overwhelming. Starting with one item at a time makes so much sense-thanks for the tip!
You’re so incredibly inspiring! I’ve started to make my own yogurt because of you. I also have 4 young kids. You encourage me to make better meals for them
Hi! Would be very interested in the handmaid book but would you kindly mind correcting the link? It looks like the Mayo link was used twice! Thank you!!
Would you consider doing a video where you share some of your favourite podcasts or followers that you follow to help with the information you share on your videos. I would love some new people to listen too. Love your channel.
One trick you can use to make your mayo last a lot longer is to ferment it with a bit of your yogurt whey before putting it in the refrigerator. There is a great recipe in the "nourishing traditions" cookbook.
Thank you for the ideas. This is my first time watching your videos, but it's definitely not the last! I'm really interested in making some small changes and I'm learning a lot from you. With that said, do you have any advice on how to get rid of extra moisture in closets/cupboards? I'm currently using multiple moisture absorber dehumidifiers that I bought at the store. It's a plastic container you fill with the pellets at the top and once theh absorb moisture they become a liquid in the bottom layer. I don't think it's helping because we still have mustiness in the clothes and the fragrance of the product is also not ideal/possibly toxic. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks 😊
The link that is supposed to be for the book Homemade goes to Downshiftology’s recipe for mayonnaise. So does the link for the mayonnaise listed separately. Would you repost the Homemade book link?
I found it on Amazon but the Amazon title is annoying (and doesn't match the book title) The *actual* title is "Hand Made: The Modern Guide to Made-From-Scratch Living" by Melissa K. Norris but it is listed on Amazon as "Hand Made: The Modern Woman's Guide to Made-From-Scratch Living." Like one of those "The Modern Housewife" books from the fifties. Anyway I don't think I can put in a link, but is currently on sale for $9.99 so that is nice.
It's a lot of time but I make bread and flour tortillas as much as I can. You definitely can't beat the flavor/texture. I have never made yogurt but am curious to try.
And adding the cost of buying the ingredients for granola for example bulk it’s cheaper in the long run. I reckon. And I wanna make my own one day and make my own food at home.
Your flour looks very coarse, it can be made finer! With the Nutrimill harvest grain mill theres a learning curve. This is what i have learned from experience and other people's tips. Turn the mill on, tighten the knob clockwise until you hear the stones ticking. Add in the grain and then TURN The knob clockwise more to tighten the stones more. This will result in a very fine flour. (Play around with how much further to go, stop as soon as the flour gets fine.. Dont turn knob too far clockwise Because the stones can jam up with flour).Once almost done milling, turn the knob counter clockwise to loosen the stones. Repeat this process each time you mill. Hope this helps❤
I took a screenshot to write on an index card and put in my recipe box. We are saving up for one so this will come in handy. Thanks, internet stranger!
I love your videos and making more and more from scratch. Can you make a video on what is in your kitchen? From small appliances, utensils, cookware, bakeware, mixing etc? Wanting declutter and simplify my kitchen items but with making from scratch what do you use?? Thanks
Hello! This was a great video and encouraging. I am interested in the Handmade recipe book you referenced in your video, but the link you have in the About section is a repeat of the Mayo recipe from Downshiftology (I like her stuff, too!). Can you let me know when you change it?
I got married to my second husband in 2000 and our diet has evolved to a much better diet… nothing like what we use to eat. It was a slow but gradual change and my youngest eats so much better than I ever did at her age.
Hi! What’s your water kefir recipe? How much juice are you adding? I bought the same small bottles for my son but not getting the second ferment to work.
I have never tried kefir water. I just looked up the recipe with the link you used. Instead of the 3 cups of water do you use 3 cups of grape juice or do you add the grape juice after making the kefir water?
How long do you let your rolls rise and then bake? I have a bread recipe I love and think I could use half the recipe for buns instead of sliced bread for the week. 😊
started making my own tortillas and haven’t bought any from the store since 😂 So for the first time ever I made home made pizza crust with the kids and it’s was amazing. Hard but amazing lol I will always make my own pizza crust from now on but I definitely need a kitchen aid because it was hard lol
Do you have any recipes for a young living inflammation roller? I have the info you sent me when signing up but don't recall seeing anything like that. I think I heard copaiba is good for inflammation.
Kids in the kitchen is one of the most treasured and caring gestures a parent can give their children. The rewards are life long.
I totally agree! ❤

That sounds amazing!! What’s a thoughtful gift! :)
1thing i love about this vid. You show these wonky shaped tortillas. This is very encouraging to newbies to see not everything needs to be perfect
Love these staples! Having the staples down really helps the kitchen time flow way easier.
I highly recommend using the tortilla recipe from grains in small places! They are 100% freshly milled flour, and they are just as soft and supple as with AP. Might be worth a look!
Hi there. Love the video. Can you please link the book again? I believe the mayo is linked twice. Thank you!
I made the Farmhouse on Boone tortillas last week. I did 2 other recipes and then put everything in the refrigerator. The tortillas were in there for 3 days and my family said they were the best ones I have ever made. I also did 50/50 fresh milled and all purpose flour.

So what happens to the oil if it’s microwaved?

@orphaholen9023 also if I remember correctly if it was microwaved too long it can be a fire hazard. 😂
@@rainygreene9161 Thank you, I learned something new!
@orphaholen9023 you're very welcome!
Thanks for sharing! ❤ yes, including the kids and teaching them skills is so helpful as they get older! Adding a grain mill to my kitchen next.
I love putting jam in my plain yogurt! 😋
Correction; store bought corn tortillas have a lot of added chemicals too.

I learned so much from my mother just watching her cook.
I've been loving homemade corn tortillas. Corn masa, water that's it. A press is definitely with it, easy to find used.
LOVED this video! So helpful and loved the quick moving from one item to the next without a lot of talking. Very well done!

Do you have a link to these no burp fido jars. I see the jars on amazon but it looks like they seal so I'm not sure how they burp on their own.

Yes, I make yogurt, granola and bread at home. And I started to make dressing too. I should
try tortillas, kombucha and the salad!
The best thing is to start with something easy, like cooking dry beans and freezing. them, rather than canned. Make a batch of bisquick, pancake, or onion soup mix. These all use common ingredients, too.
A bread machine is also a great way to have the healthy bread but not take forever in the kitchen! I use mine A LOT!
Wow, stellar list :) Loved this.
I love watching you cooking , I do miss your Costco hauls though 😊
Love this! I've been wanting to make more things from scratch, but it always felt overwhelming. Starting with one item at a time makes so much sense-thanks for the tip!
Love this video! Could you link the recipe book? The link listed is the mayo link. Thank you!
I can't fine the cookbook you display.
Author is Melissa K. Norris
You’re so incredibly inspiring! I’ve started to make my own yogurt because of you. I also have 4 young kids. You encourage me to make better meals for them
I love your home made meals, just delicious 😋😋😋😋❤❤
Homemade tortillas are worth the work! So delicious and thankful for the minimal ingredients 🌮
They are SO good. No comparison to store bought.
Hi! Would be very interested in the handmaid book but would you kindly mind correcting the link? It looks like the Mayo link was used twice! Thank you!!
Do you have a video showing specifics of making the homemade tortillas? I’m intimidated but I want to try 😀
These are all totally doable! Thanks!!
I’d be interested in a full tutorial of water kefir. Loved this video.

You’re assuming that she 1) doesn’t know how to use her mill to get finer grain and 2) that she wants finer grain.
Is she’s right in her assumption she will have shared helpful advice as it was for me. If not, it costs nothing to ignore.
So many truths looks yummy the granola looks great my daughter loves it but gets skin allergies from it ❤
❤ you should check out the precooker machine for flour tortillas. Your older kids would enjoy helping and it's easy saves 2 of your steps.
