I love cooking asian food because it meets 3 out of the 4 of my food criteria: -healthy -savory -doesn't contain dairy (I'm semi-severely lactose intolerant) -cheap (if you live near an Asian supermarket, otherwise the ingredients can be expensive.) Unfortunately I don't live near an Asian supermarket so it doesn't meet the last of my four critieria. I cook it when I can.
Same! I'm only mildly lactose intolerant though, but I simply dislike a lot of dairy (most cheeses and such). And I know the pain of not living near an Asian supermarket 😭
@@JPCinemas Mostly stir fry. (Not the "healthiest," I know, but it's possible to cook low-calory stir-fry.) I like broccoli and mushrooms especially. Scallions are also a must.

While i love the ideas here. I can say these aren't cheap. A person needing to buy these products will spend more then 20. You can't buy seasons by the teaspoon or tablespoon. You should try a money challenge. Like eat for 5 days on 30 bucks. That would be a way to truly gauge affordable and healthy meals.

You can actually buy spices in small quantities if you go to a bulk food store that sells spices. You could literally just get a tsp or tbsp if you wanted. I go to Bulk Barn (not sure if they have it outside Canada) when I need spices for just one recipe I'll never use again or I'm trying it out. That being said depending on the spice you may end up spending more eventually in the long run if you are going to use the spice very often. I do generally agree with your point, but just pointing it out as an option. The best thing would probably be for someone on a very tight budget would be to focus on very flavorful but also versatile spices that they can use in multiple dishes. Don't buy them all at once. Buy them here and there when on sale or you have a little extra cash. Realistically someone may have to eat more blandly at first and then they can use recipes like this once they have a little bit of stock in the pantry. Another tip is to try the ethnic aisles or groceries stores for spices. I can usually get a much larger bag of spices for cheaper than the "regular" spice aisle. You might not be able to find every spice there but you can find a lot of basic, common spices and then ones unique to that culture.
i made the chicken meat balls with kale, added rice to the meal, so good! i totally forgot the yogurt sauce until my last bite, and wow did it make such a difference! like the meal was already good, but the yogurt made it even better! thank you for these recipes!
I had a really good set of meals with $3 chuck eye and $3 butterflied flank steaks this weekend. Slice and marinate an hour in spicy stuff, sear the shit out of it, serve in omlets or on rice or veggies or whatever your persuasion is there. With a little care to trim the harder fat on the chuck eye there's also no reason you couldn't treat it like a nice ribeye on the grill either. Theres some great deals to be had with those, flanks, various roasts, and beef/pork neck. Don't be scared of getting beef or pork neck bones, they cook wonderfully in stews, curries, chillis and tend to be dirt cheap. Hell even with chicken, sometimes the preseasoned bone in quarters and thighs can be had around me for less than $1 a pound and they go straight on the grill and into meal prep containers. For pork, ya can't go wrong with a couple cheap pork shoulders to smoke for 4-5 hours and oven finish overnight for cheap and easy pulled pork.
If you have a kitchen mixer (Like one of those Kitchen Aide mixers for cakes), the $200 meat grinder attachment is 10,000% worth the price. (Or if you have a Cabela's, Gander Mountain, etc. near you.. $150 countertop meat grinder.) Hamburger = $4.99/lbs Sirloin Top Round constantly goes on sale for $3.49/lbs. $1.50/lbs savings, and you just buy as much as you can afford.. grind it up with as much or as little fat as you want, and portion it out to 1 lbs freezer bags, and you have *better quality* hamburger for as long as you want. Ground pork = $2.99/lbs or more. Pork shoulder = constantly going on sale for $0.99/lbs.

When I was little my dad was trying to incorporate kale into his diet but he hated it, so he developed a dish we affectionately call Mish Mash. Mish Mash is basically ground beef, kale, some seasonings, lime juice, and salt. It was a super cheap and pretty good tasting way for him to incorporate more kale into his diet.
Interesting--my dad also dislikes kale but eats it for the great nutritional value, and I found that if I sautée it in butter or olive oil with several minced cloves of garlic and some salt and pepper--essentially cooking it in garlic butter--he likes it fine.
I tried the glazed chicken meatballs recipe, and it was DELICIOUS! I didn’t have Worcestershire sauce so I replaced it with Balsamic vinegar (I didn’t use the same amount though since the vinegar is so strong. I added two TBSPs instead of three) and a squeeze of lemon. I only made the meatballs and replaced the kale thing with a lettuce salad! The whole family liked the dish so much!

Everyone sucks at some basic things. Me, I can't guess measurements or remember units to save my life. Like dafuq is an actual inch? How many oz are in a pint? What's my height? Better ask someone who knows such things...
but calories arent the most important nutritional information. it can actually be quite misleading, a "healthy" adult or even a teenager would definitly need more than just 1,500 calories a day
Calories are not the deciding factor if something is healthy or not. In fact, I would consider it to be pretty low on the list of what determines healthiness of a meal
i blame the algorithm on the fact that i have never seen this video before until i started watching health related videos. i just started counting calories and paying attention to nutrition to try to lose weight (down 11lbs so far!) and i had no idea that josh had lost 100lbs in the past! been a long time fan, and i love that josh is living proof that you can still have food as a passion while having gone through a weight loss journey and continuing to work to maintain a healthy weight.

I find the key to healthier is making it from scratch (usually easier than most people think) basically no premade meals where they've added all sorts of things to preserve it for you. But in addition, by not getting most of the ingredients premade, but instead making each element yourself, you tend to end up cheaper, especially cheaper than eating out because healthy requires ingredients to be as fresh as possible for them, which in America adds to the cost. So eating healthy and cheaper just means making most things for yourself with fresh ingredients instead shopping through the premade section at the store.
@Amber O Hey Amber and Jeremy, I have healthy recipes on my channel that you might enjoy. I recently made a really easy and delicious *vegan* Pesto Pasta dish. I'd love to share them with you and make something that you're interested in in the near future. 😊👩🏻🍳
Everyone saying you cant buy seasonings by the teaspoon, That isn't the point. What Josh is demonstrating is the pure food cost of each meal. If you were to break down the cost of each container to individual portions the amount being shown for spices is how much you would have used from your total unit worth. I only understand this logic because I've worked in kitchens all my life and thinking about food cost per unit is now second nature. The fact that thyme costs 4 dollars for a tub of it is not relevant to the point being made by the video, but it is a very relevant point to the wallets of many people. If you use 15 cents worth of that thyme you have a delicious meal. The subtext is that spices go a long way and don't cost much specifically *per meal* to make delicious healthy meals. oftentimes the cost of the actual meal isn't the main issue; its other factors like gas and time and such to get to the store that make it the hardest to do. I hope this clarifies things a little.

What vegetable side dishes go well with the pork recipe?
“Once it’s charred”...no, Josh! It’s kale, not chard.
Hard mode for real would doing this with chard, and having to figure out when that chard is just just seared chard and when said chard becomes charred chard but not quite burnt charred chard.
Extreme mode is to add asofoetida resin, then you have to monitor the shards in the chard and know when it's all cooked so you have charred chard but no charred shard in the hing shard charred chard.

What I love about these recipes is that a lot of the sauces and spices used are stuff that I generally have in my fridge and cupboard (since sauces and spices are always good to have on hand for flavour), which if you’re someone who already has the sauces and spices and maybe some of the fresh ingredients it makes this even cheaper
I love cooking asian food because it meets 3 out of the 4 of my food criteria:
-healthy
-savory
-doesn't contain dairy (I'm semi-severely lactose intolerant)
-cheap (if you live near an Asian supermarket, otherwise the ingredients can be expensive.)
Unfortunately I don't live near an Asian supermarket so it doesn't meet the last of my four critieria.
I cook it when I can.
Same! I'm only mildly lactose intolerant though, but I simply dislike a lot of dairy (most cheeses and such). And I know the pain of not living near an Asian supermarket 😭
What do you make?
@@JPCinemas Mostly stir fry. (Not the "healthiest," I know, but it's possible to cook low-calory stir-fry.)

$30 for 5 days isn’t affordable for a lot of people, I’d love to see a week for $20, not including “specialty” ingredients

I’d dig to see some “but cheaper” dinner recipes centered around beef. What cuts work for different cooking styles
(Or if you have a Cabela's, Gander Mountain, etc. near you.. $150 countertop meat grinder.)
Hamburger = $4.99/lbs
Sirloin Top Round constantly goes on sale for $3.49/lbs.
@@Dakarn True. However I've also had excellent luck by taking a couple pork shoulders or chuck roasts or whatever large cheap cut of meat and asking the butcher staff to grind it for me. There was no extra markup or anything and it was fresh ground.
@@tommymaddox6785 I've always been told no. Once it leaves the butcher's counter and goes into the supermarket, they won't touch it due to FDA regulations and sanitary reasons.

Kale 😩
Have you heard of colcannon? Your dad basically made the kale version!
Interesting--my dad also dislikes kale but eats it for the great nutritional value, and I found that if I sautée it in butter or olive oil with several minced cloves of garlic and some salt and pepper--essentially cooking it in garlic butter--he likes it fine.
It's good in soups too. Just make sure to boil it for 10 min (no more) and it adds a nice texture

@@zacmurphy9995 In comparison to other veggies all peppers (other than green) are usually priced at like $3+ for a single pepper, while a whole ass celery stalk would be $1.99, a cucumber $0.99, tomatoes at $0.99/lb, and that pepper is usually only for one meal while those other veggies can be used for multiple. And hell yes I def agree. Buying a small bottle of Worcestershire sauce, rice vinegar and other unique sauces can be very pricey for a student especially when most fast and cheap meals wouldn't require you to use those things on an every meal basis.

Package of ramen: $0.10
1 egg: $0.10
1 carrot: $0.50
1 green onion: $0.25
Boom, dinner for a dollar
Where are you living that a carrot costs 5x more than an egg?
@@melbzurich A bag of carrots at my farmer's market is like $2.50 and there's usually like 4-6 thiccy boi carrots in it - I get a dozen eggs for $1.25 lol
Where's da protein ?
@@utkarshsatyaprakash4383 egg is protein and fat :) you can even put in 3-4 eggs if you want more. Eggs are pretty nutritionally complete and very cheap. Great way to get fat/protein/calories.
Utkarsh Satya Prakash da egg?
I literally said out loud “Healthy food is sooo expensive!!” And got your notification instantly. HAHA wow timing much.
Especially when you buy organic only. I hate that but to me it's worth it.
healty food is a really general word. I think people look for balanced diets mostly. And that is expensive for the whole foods mostly. And it is also about how you cook your food.
@@KAITLYNTAYLOROFFICIAL it is worth at least as you know your goals.
So far this series is Josh making tiny portion meals and saying “wow it’s cheaper to make small amounts of food!”
and even then it's not that cheap, 20 dollars for a day of food lol
Right? He plated 4 meatballs and 3 leaves and called that "dinner".
Tbf I think the tiny ass portions is more to game the system re:calories than to game it re:price
Maybe start eating like a human not like a whole gang of truckers lol
The meals average out at about 500 kcal. That is plenty for an adult male.
2:33 For the better kick and in case You might be vegan or something, You can use Eggplant instead of porkchop, and in my opinion the meal gets even better
just remember the months by their initials:

“yOu gOtTa uSe tHaT knOgGin” ~ Joshua, the man that doesn’t know the months in order.
I can't remember the as well :D
I laughed several times during this, my first video of yours that I’ve watched, and I can see you’re a great cook. Instant subscription from me. Looking forward to watching all your other stuff!
One of the best videos on the channel. Genuinely simple and cheap! Great job.
In general I’d love to see a healthy series that doesn’t skimp on flavor.
This doesn't really make any sense
Ethan Chlewboski (totally butchered that) has a few recipes like this!
@@FiEnD749 it does make sense. Most healthy recipes i see only season with salt (and a bit of black pepper if they're feeling generous)
@@cocoaicci_ salt is not a “healthy” ingredient as humans already ingest way too much sodium. Spices are generally 0 calories and it’s easy to add tasty things like (snow peas, peppers, etc) that are extremely low calorie and add tons of flavor.
Josh’s meals are terrible from a healthy eating perspective for (various reasons). There’s many good sources out there tho. If you want to see the other extreme, check out “Remington James” who makes enjoyable meals that would be considered very healthy from a fitness standpoint.
The most exciting part of this video was realising i have everything i need already to make that shatshuka 🤤
Is "but cheaper" gonna turn into a series now?
It already is brah
always has been
It's a series already.
It's 3 episodes in already bro
Hopefully
Omg, I was feeling horrible and just looking for some healthy recipes though I truly had no energy to actually cook anything. This was freaking HILARIOUS and now I am super inspired to make all three of these within the next two days. We need more weirdos in the world. Thank you.
