"in the liches laire you see an amalgam of hands, feet, arms, wrists, livers, separated muscles and other random body parts rise up and turn towards you, leaning a bundle of heads, eyes, ears, tounges and noses in your direction. As it does you notice a familiar face in it. One you stabbed. One that you stabbed in the head infact. You can actually see the place you stabbed it and at the same time you notice that not a single body part is unscathed... All of them seem to have wounds upon them... I've only been part of one tpk and it was the first fight of the entire campaign lol
Our group used to play AD&D, and our current campaign (which has now been running for like a year) was our first go at trying out 5e. Me and our DM were the only people to have played 5e before and that was still minimal, plus we had a new player who'd never played D&D before. Campaign starts and us 6 players (sorcerer, warlock, cleric, monk, ranger, and fighter who plays much more like a rogue) met in a wagon travelling to a city. Soon enough we're attacked by a group of bandits and the fight instantly starts going down hill. Doesn't take long until it's a tpk lol.
We then restarted the fight since we didn't want to immediately completely start again with new characters, and then proceeded to wipe the floor with the bandits. All it took was being slightly more smart and doing things like me (the warlock) hiding in the cart and lobbing eldritch blasts instead of standing out in the open.
Since then we're now over a year into the campaign, have fought zombie dragons, own an airship, pulled off the perfect kidnapping plan while our two good party members tried and failed to stop us, no characters have permanently died, and my character is secretly making plans to become a litch XD

The only real TPK I’ve been in was a practice session my dad put together when my brother and I were still new to D&D. So of course, he threw a dragon at us to fight which punted me into a wall almost immediately. My brother eventually figured out what was going on with the dragon, but died before he could actually utilize it. Turned out the thing was just an extremely convincing illusion that someone put together while they were hiding not to far away and casting other spells at us to make it look like the dragon was the thing attacking us, not them.

We were fighting an ice witch and we weren't doing great. Our rogue snuck up and stole her staff away from her, he then points it in her (and our whole teams) general direction, and activates it. He rolls. And casts an upcasted cone of cold on us all. The ice witch is immune and fine, we are all dead. Not dying, dead. He then runs away and says he's not bothered to continue with the character/ campaign.
Now I get it, these things happen. The reason I'm salty, is because for a week he'd been bugging us all to cancel this campaign my friend had worked so hard on because he'd just heard about Pathfinder 2e and wanted to play that instead. So his motives were, questionable.

  • @jled787

In Canon lore for my group's Mystara game where 4/6 of the players are newly appointed level 13 Barons given a piece of land each. The fiefs are invaded by Goblinoids lead by "Wyrmlords" who seek to conquer our lands bestowed upon us. We have already succeeded in defeating their advanced army by way of a bombing run made by our resident Sidhe (pronounced as Shee) Wizard (who is basically a genderbent Megumin from Konosuba) and made TNT with the creation spell and enlarged. We have also killed 1 Wyrmlord and proceeded to capture and kill another.
Now from the interrogation from the captured Wyrmlord, their main army had begun their full advance upon us. So our Wizard had thought that it worked once, it will work again, and proceeds to make TNT Bombs around the border area of our fiefs...(bad idea). So the plan worked...a bit too well in fact, as the bombs proceed to do more damage than previously thought of. As it turns out, our DM had secretly placed Nuclear Powerplants Undergound for us to find later (Mystara Lore, the world was a scientific "utopia" until the discovery of Radiation enhanced Magic). The TNT explosion dealt so much damage that it affected 2 of these Reactors that they also exploded. And since the Reactors were deep underground, it caused an earthquake and made fissure so large that it basically cracked the Mystara World in half killing everyone and everything in a fiery exploding planet.
    tl;dr
    Rocks Fall everyone dies? *scoff*
    TNT Explosion, the World Explodes.

I got a story for ya, here goes. For context I play as a Tiefling Rogue Warlock named Thrills, there's also a Dwarf Hunter Ranger named Bharagos Stormpike, a Half-Drow Elf Nature Cleric named Mitz'ry, and a Swiftstride Shifter(Monkey) Monk Bard named Zhuhua. We were in the high elven capital city where we had recently spoken to the King of Yellow about the return of the Lich King, after that meeting we gotten in contact with one of the leaders of the Thieves Guild who was well acquainted with my character given their history and he had asked us to meet him at his bistro down by the docks to discuss business.
After a good meal the Thieves Guild leader who goes by the name of Paps told us that someone had placed a hit on him, with the assassin being identified as a Wood Elf named Lamia who was recognized in the guild for working under a rival gang of thieves at a night club downtown. So we headed there and at first me, Zhuhua, and Mitz'ry planned on sneaking in...Bharagos on the other hand, decided to simply walk up to the front of the building and begins to try climbing up it. When he was caught trying to break into the building, he gotten swarmed by like 7 bouncers that had high CR at the time. Unfortunately or fortunately however you'd want to look at it, Bharagos wasn't locked in combat with the seven bouncers, the seven bouncers were locked in combat with him.
You see, Bharagos has made his character DUMMY THICC to the point that not only did he had a high AC with his Half-Plate armor, not only was he dealing some serious damage with his dual battleaxes, not only did he had a high Constitution to where our combined health pools of both me, Zhuhua, and Mitz'ry would barely be close to his health, but the bouncers were just getting bad after bad roll! Our DM then decided to throw even more bouncers at him, with Mitz'ry even joining in but she was also throwing some bad rolls with her crossbow and rapier to where upon first drawing out her rapier she accidentally slung it out of her hand and into the nightclub! Yet even with all that, it was still not enough to put a dent on Bharagos. It was an absolute massacre of elves, until he eventually casted Thunderwave with his axe causing an explosion and sending half of the entire city into panic!
Me and Zhuhua did get the information we needed from the nightclub by sneaking in during the commotion, turns out the assassin has gone rogue for some reason and even worse was now targeting me for a specific reasoning that also involved Thrill's background and we all managed to get away before the guards came to see what the hell was going on. Long story short, if you have a problem that needs to be solved; send in a Dwarf.

So, talking about TPK made me remember an old campaign, long story short it was a lot of time travel mumbo jumbo, time loops, both stable and unstable and the likes
Basically we went back in time to try to discover why the weave (for those who don't know think of it as a magical atmosphere that make it possible to cast spell) was shredded in our universe.
Now, I don't remember the details, but what I remember is our wizard thought it was a good idea to stop a ritual of both the gods of magic and the God of time, causing a big fu*quack*ing explosion that took out half of the region, and what after the end of the campaign we discovered was the cause of the damage done to the weave
And the funny thing is? Everyone in the area died, party included, exept my character, a dragonborn barbarian who spent the entire campaign surviving these kind of situations, literally to spiteful to die, and with him being stuck in the past, became the one to unite the various tribes in a near region and rallied them against an undead menace (but that's the story of another campaign) and became an historical figure

Accidentally cheesing the final boss (who is an oni) with *GREASE.* And yes, that actually happened, courtesy of my gnome artificer Aritix Reese, whose flaw is that instead of running away from a demon (which onae are) he instead, studies it's anatomy. Because you only get one chance to examine a nalfeshnee's diaphagram.

I was nearly part of a TPK… except 2 party members out of our party of around 10 survived. One was a teifling bard who a summoned hag took to safety after she was knocked out. The other… was me.
For context our party had been on the run from an evil empire that conquered most of the continent. The empire found the rebellion we joined up with and sent a land-ship with one of its generals, his army, and 3 mercenaries to take us down. The 3 mercenaries were played by the DM’s friends, and had more experience playing D&D than we did at the time. The mercenaries were 1 or 2 levels higher than us.
Initiative was rolled and both our rogue and one of the mercenaries rolled a nat 20. In that group this means they go before everyone else. Somehow the mercenary, a Barbarian, went before the rogue. He then walked up to the rogue and rolled another nat 20 on his attack. The rogue was killed before they could even move.
Realizing the mercenaries were the primary threat the party decided to take them on and have me, a circle of the moon Druid, take on the general and part of his army by myself. I was rolling well, and holding my own against the general and his troops. But the other party members begin to drop like flies as this Barbarian mercenary keeps cutting everyone down while a bard-barian mercenary played support. The DM, who was lenient with the rules, allowed the hag summoned by a killed party member to have a witch’s broom and carry the unconscious bard out. That left me, our fighter, the nearly dead general, his army, and all 3 mercenaries.
I finally manage to kill the general just as his more of his army arrived. The fighter wants to fight until the end, refusing to give up. But my character knows there’s no point in staying. The mercenaries were still going pretty strong, and the army is now completely focused on us. After destroying the army’s land-ship as an earth elemental (siege damage ftw) I sadly had to leave the fighter to his fate.
So yeah not exactly a TPK but it was pretty damn close.

As for favorite TPK, mine is... in Rokugan. So. we are running a Heroes of Rokugan module in the L5R system, which is a D0 based system that really does need more love for those who don't get too attached to their character in theory, as it essentially is a softer version of your "roll again to see what happens on your crit" idea (despite us having 8 deaths in the campaign and 3 of them mine, INCLUDING the near-TPK in question).
So yeah, half the deaths in the entire campaign, which was the Heroes of Rokugan 2 campaign just being adapted for use in 4th edition L5R, where we actually had two characters per person so that we could play the low level modules too (it was originally a thing where Gencon and similar events would be where the events played out, and had living campaign elements to it, but we played it after the fact as the modules were available to those who wanted to play it and didn't mind basically playing a railroad with side modifiers, bonuses, benefits, and occasional plot twists, or in one case, a custom mission to fix something the high level group did so that the low level group could actually do a module).
    Right, the actual TPK.
So, in Rokugan, which is basically, eastern D&D where you are samurai and shugenja and courtiers and such (yes, there is essentially a class type dedicated to talking yourself out of or through trouble, and there were times we wished we had on), and so.... well, its an eastern hybrid setting, which takes influence from Korean and Chinese mythology too. So one of the divine realms is the Realm of Thwarted Destiny. Short version: gods should not forget to name the moon's shadow. I honestly do not know much about the full lore though.
So, we go to a shrine, some stuff happens, we are now in the realm of thwarted destiny. It is (in its apparently modified form due to a couple of us being new to the time and our DM actually wanting to keep us alive with hints when needed and pre-module modifications to how the story goes due to several of us still being somewhat new) supposed to be a "we find and negotiate with a fallen hero, then return with a minor boon."
ME, having read the core books and made a shugenja who is properly book-abiding in mindset and having disadvantages that make me hard to persuade... "That thing has somewhat visible horns. JADE STRIKE, JADE STRIKE... " It was supposed to be a homebrew redemption for someone who wouldn't matter too much. Instead, the only party member who survived was the one who actually just stayed behind and slept in context, since they did not come with us. He had new low level characters that he just happened to meet up with before the next low level module.

We had our wizard point their random spell wand out into the hole, so that the wand was pointed towards our cell door. The way the wand worked was that it would fire a random spell dependent on your roll out of 100. The only thing that would for sure kill us was fireball. He rolled and got a 72. Fireball. We all died.

We were doing a campaign for Call Of Cthulhu. Story was a mixture of Re-Animator, WWI and SCP. We were SUPPOSED to figure out where the zombies/ghouls are coming from in the trenches. We find em, freak, run, get cornered by a huge group of em, and tried chucking grenades at them. We all failed our rolls, got blown to bits, and my character's last moments were being pulled into the old man SCP'S pocket dimension to be his new "toy"

My best moment of TPK was in AD&D. For some ungodly reason, I was allowed a firearm. A simple flintlock pistol and me, not understanding methods of measurement at the time, bought *waaaaay* too much ammunition- which I just carried in a reinforced backpack so it could carry more without ripping. Alongside the paper cartridges was a number of helpful objects. A crowbar, mess kit, tinderbox, a couple spare daggers.
I was basically the group packmule.
For anyone experienced in AD&D, you know where this is going.
A fight broke out in an inn, fairly enclosed space, and our Wizard tried to cast a spell. Funny thing with this Wizard, he had a curse on him. Any time he tried to cast magic, he had a 10% of the spell turning itself into a Fireball. Well, that magic missile turned itself into a Fireball... which hit everyone in the room. I failed my dexterity saving throw with a natural 1, so my stuff started to catch on fire. It was at that time that the DM remembered I had far more ammunition in paper loads, and it was all in my backpack, so he rolls a dice in front of us all.
Long story short, kaboom. I turned into the equivalent of an IED and sent several lead loads and now recently shrapneled metal equipment soaring through the air and impaling everything. The enemies were dead, my party was dead, the innkeeper is dead, and a good half of the building now no longer existed.

Some how Noone in our group was able to roll above the goblins AC. (There was also a carrige mishap where the one player ignored a trap, and sent everything flying, including an unconscious body, causing a failed death save.
    Good times.
(After the second TPK we were told that the goblins didn't bother killing us outright, but just stole all of our stuff, as a way to let us actually try to progress.)

One time, we entered a giant lava area that had metal platforms leading to different rooms, standard with a giant area in the center that suspiciously looks like a giant monster could comfortably be. Well, our fighter that didn't want to play his character anymore (he went through 5 for the campaign this one he played for 1 hour and was like nah anymore jfc) hit a switch in one of the rooms that released a homebrewed hydra with 5 heads that was red. Lava Hydra, noice. Well, in that same room there was a way for us to escape but we couldn't because the fighter somehow flipped another switched locking half of the room off, him being on the side with the escape and us on the other trapped...with a fire hydra...shooting gas/fire to ignite it at us... needless to say TPK for all of us. The fighter decided that his character couldn't "live on" without his new found friends and took his life... The worst part, we were all level 3, and our DM stated there was only 1 way to get that monster to awaken and that was through a very specific way of switches being switched which the fighter did...

I’m relatively knew to D&D so have only had one TPK and it was quite recent. It was in a Homebrew campaign of a friend of mine. We had just gotten through this really creepy psychological horror dungeon where we saw illusions of our friends dead. It then opened up into this massive room which looked like a dragon hoard with all the gold and jewels in it. But the creature in there wasn’t a dragon. It was a Homebrew creature our DM called Predator. It was this weird dragon, snake, wolf hybrid thingymajig.
So anyway we were getting our asses handed to us when out of nowhere this ball of bright blue fire appears in the middle of the hoard room and the Predator runs away from it like a scaredy cat. Our Barbarian sees this and looking at how dangerous the Predator was, he decided it would be safer to jump into the strange magical blue fire than to deal with the Predator. When he did, the look on our DM’s face was priceless, “Roll a Wis save”, Nat 1. Our DM just hit his head on the table so hard and kept his forehead there whilst saying in a pretty monotone fashion. What kind of idiot jumps into unknown magical fire?
Then one by one, those closest to the fire began to collapse one after the other, their souls being ripped out of them by the fire. First our idiot Barbarian, then our druid, then her bear, then Predator. Luckily, my bard was being a scaredy cat and hiding far away from everyone and definitely not looking for valuable jewels from the hoard to steal. So as she saw this happen and panic she used the hoard as components to reincarnate her two friends before the spell reached her (she didn’t reincarnate the bear). She then died and since our Druid hadn’t taken reincarnate she was dead.
Not sure if it counts as a total party kill since two were reincarnated. But if it wasn’t a slow attack we were 100% screwed and all dead. Looking back our DM clearly hadn’t planned for everyone to die and was being lenient with the rules so I could reincarnate people. Since he made the casting time Instantaneous instead of an hour.

My favourite TPK was in a Star Wars game we were playing. The GM had set everyone up with secret backstories that only they knew about and we all kept them secret for a long time. Then one game we were on the run from this crime syndicate and the GM took some of the people away from the table to have a private conversation. I got really paranoid and convinced the people still at the table that they were plotting against us. It all culminated with all the secret backstories coming out, we blew up a hotel, there was a chase scene, we got into a huge fight, pretty much everyone died. I think like one person got away so it wasn't really a TPK but the game definitely ended.

The second one reminds me a lot of my goblin, Fect, from Pathfinder. He was an alchemist that was just a tad bit obsessed with fire. Ended up getting charged by a minotaur skeleton and ended up just being turned into a greasy goblin pancake. Well the DM rolled for what happened to the bottoms of alchemist fire he had and one went off. He forgot that he was carrying a huge amount of alchemist fire and normal oil. I don't remember the exact amount of damage, but I believe it was over 200 points of damage done from the sudden alchemical explosion that turned the stone walkway into soup, as well as destroying everything (including another player) within ten feet.

I just recently DMd a TPK.
In my games I like to have a loz of consequences and guards are no joke. They have martial training, are many and if you mess with one soon the rest will know.
Our local Sorcerer did not respect that despite knowing I like to play with consequences. He straight up murdered 2 guards, no negotiation. They needed to get somewhere and he murderhobo'd... So it was quite a shock when a few weeks later a group of veteran guards, silencers and officers showed up at their doorstep to apprehend them for the murder of 2 guards. The sorcerer instantly tries to attack and got counterspelled... He was killed on sight which lead to a chain reaction where everyone got arrested/trialed or killed on spot.

The glass tomb thing honestly sounds like a fun setup for a video game dungeon. Might raise questions when you add enemies in, but I mean, lots of RPGs just handwave that question or ignore it outright.
But yeah, have an encounter that leads to a huge explosion in the desert. Your party has a one off protection (a la cutscene Second Hymn in Tales of the Abyss) to not get killed in the explosion, but now the surrounding desert has become a glass dungeon you need to find your way out of.

My favorite TPK was a Call of Cthulhu one shot. Of course a lot of CoC games have a lot of player deaths so it's not super uncommon. But my players got to witness the climax of their worst possible outcome before the last one of them died aafter he unknowingly opened a portal between realms to let out the unspeakable horrors of the night into the world. Fairly satisfying conclusion and there's no major downside since it was just a 4 hour one shot the players enjoyed.
I was told afterwards that it played out exactly like an H. P. Lovecraft story minus the racism. Which I think is pretty good considering I've never read one.

For this particular game. His party is right next to the enemies, but being insane, he doesn't care. Pulls the pin throws the grenade and kills all but one person, other than him self. They finish off the remaining enemies and then stopped that campaign since there was no way a revive was happening and they all wanted to play a new one anyway.
