These are kind of reworked blues and folk classics but it’s the melody choices and lyrics that are really impressive. Wonder how many of these are works in progress that took years and how much of it was like a creative burst? Having written music most of my adult life sometimes it evolves slowly and sometimes you can’t get the ideas out of your head fast enough. He clearly has a deep library of songs to draw elements from so he’s keeping the riffs and chords simple so the message can be the center of attention. Just awesome stuff!
It’s pretty clear to see he’s cookin these up quick, but like most prolific folks, he doesn’t concern himself with something sounding too close to something else. Reminds me a bit of Loudon Wainwright III, but all you need to hear is his Boeing whistle blower tune to see that his creative fire is burning BRIGHT right now and he can’t miss.
ABSOLUTE PURE TALENT JESSE HAS…. BORN WITH IT SOUNDS….. GOD BLESS HIM AND PLEASE NEVER STOP WRITING AND SHARING YOUR GENIUS WITH US!! MUCH ENJOYMENT YOU BRING AND I STILL HEAR SOME JOHN PRINE SOMETIMES…. THANK YOU FOR MAKING ME SMILE…..
A depression song that's actually about depression, not about overcoming, being brave or how true love will fix it, which it won't. A rare gem. Thank you.
why is this guy not super famous already.. i know why.. becuse he is spitting straight facts in his lyrics and some kinds of (People) dont like that.. this man has a unique voice and is a super song writer
As someone who's "always been a little bit sad around the edges", i love this and i love how much fun he has singing it... makes for a nice juxtaposition
Please bring out an album brother!!!! You'r raw acoustic stuff is up there with Nelson and Dylan. Its fresh, genuine and hits the nail on the head. Love from Liverpool❤✊
The guitar throw is an inner validation of having to live through that horrid shit but still finding the strength to chug along like the Norfolk and Western 611 Train.
I believe he's the best lyricist I've ever seen. Good lyricist are able to put three or so great lines seroundded by filler but hes songs are all great lines with absolutely no filler
Love you Jesse, keep em coming. You put all our unconscious thoughts into simple songs, and help us realize we're not alone, we're all on this sinking ship together!
When I’m depressed the first thing I do is text my girlfriend, the second thing I do is open up RUclips and sing along with this absolute masterpiece!!! Fantastic, I’m not a gambler but I’m willing to bet that things definitely don’t get better than this
Hey brother, speaking as someone who's been to that brink and back, even losing some good souls to that black void, I bet you it can get better. You got all the tools you need to fix it, they are right there in your heart. Revel in your own talent, know you're worth it. Don't sweat the melancholy, it just means you still got some soul left in ya. All the good ones keep a tinge of blue around those edges. Great song, always glad to hear something worth feeling.
I didn’t have as much fun learning the lyrics to a song since they came with the vinyl back then. Thank you for writing them down for us. Got the first verse and the chorus down. 😊❤🎉
Real talk, if you put out a vinyl album, it's going right next to my Guthrie, Pete Seeger and Jerry Jeff Walker albums. Also, I think I'm going to have to write a song about hoofing my recording accoutrements up a mountain to get clicks haha. I think you're from the south as well and if I had to record in a field of poke sallet, I'd be absolutely drenched in sweat this time of year, haha.
Fuck em kid.. Keep your head on a swivel, but you are doing what you are supposed to be doing. Raise some hell, cause some trouble, stir up some shit. Thats how legends are made. You get it and I see it. Just stay safe.
the world keeps turning no matter what we think of it, or each other, or the time we're living in. A friend once said to me that 'depression is an affliction of the intellectual' the more you're able to think about things and put shit into context, the worse it seems. Maybe - but the world keeps turning careless of us. That feller also told me I should write my anger down, put it out in the way you're doing but I have no talent. My guitar playing is remedial at best and my singing voice has a repellent quality unrivaled. You on the other hand, have got this. Stay on it, folks are HEARING you
Thats the point, once you have put it in context, it’s changed its face. You can’t ever figure this shit out, so quit trying and pick up the guitar. Cheers
All the best guitar players will say "meh I'm alright at playing" so just keep playing and put your heart and soul into it I don't play nearly as much as I used to and I regret it every day
This is amazing dude! I thought this was a cover of something and was going to look up how to play it, but I can't find anything so I deduce that this is an original song? Holy shit man, you're from another time and place.
Great song. Tough topic. Anybody who says they're uncomfortable with the topic might be depressed themselves. Thanks for talking (singing) about such an important topic.
Jesse, don’t make them loose the K9’s on you dude, you can’t stay in the woods forever…….😑 Lol, really can’t express how much I enjoy your material and appreciate your talent. Thank you God bless ya’
There is nothing punk about this. It is the definition of folk music. The lyrics you hear in classic folk tunes may seem tame and outdated now. I assure you they were edgy and controversial at the time. Tipper gore would have had a hey day with them. Stop trying to shove everthing into little niche bags so you can be cool.
@@richardclark. gotta disagree, punk means a lot to me. I once thought GG Alin and the Murder Junkies wasn’t punk. Then a real punk shared his tastes in country, rockabilly, and blues. My granny told me it helped her sore hands, and she showed me how to cook it. Science article years later confirmed the plant was medicinal and nutritional…granny was smarter than I thought.

Mr. Jesse, I can't wait till someone interviews you. I want to know all about you, my friend. I saw a video of you and your band from back in 2017. But you looked and sounded way different.

I’m completely convinced Jesse can’t make a bad song. Every song is so uniquely catchy and touching. I love Jesse Welles
His old rock band was pretty meh but ever since he started doin all this solo country stuff he has been absolutely on fire with his writing
Check out his old stuff….you aren’t wrong, it’s just amazing to hear him do it in a totally different style

Why is no one talking about the line "I was so broken that I went to get fixed, the veterinarian was nice but my doctor was pissed" That is GOLD!

what a perfect way to say it "well I’ve always been a little bit sad around the edges"

Quit being a fucking baby
His walk ups and walk downs all done without looking or thinking. He’s probably writing the next song in his head, while playing this one. Genius.
Depression has never sounded so good.
Throwing the guitar at the end is a lovely cherry on top

“I’ve always been a little bit sad around the edges It ain’t nuthin to fix and it ain’t contagious” hits so hard
I love this song ❤
This guy got stuck in the pipe when they were pumping out musicians in the seventies. He just just dislodged it would appear!❤
Fr he reminds me of Gordon litefoot
Man I don't know what I want more - for you to go on big stage or keep playing in the woods. Stay true!
I'd just like to meet him and give him a big hug for thanks
A lot of times, depression is a perfectly natural and understandable response to certain things...
Welles' never dry! Pumping out great lyrics by the day
Guitar toss at the end, along with the excited look on his face says, "hell yeah, nailed this damn good song on the first take. I fuggin rock!"
The hero we all need
But never deserved.
My lord, the picking, the twang, the tune, the reality of the sound. It's what's missing in modern music.
Every new song is my new favorite Jesse but this one hits extra hard. I also work an industrial slicing machine 🫣 usually high.
Fleeting moments of mania, produce levity, and help me forget how depressed I am.
I love a RUclipsr who actually just records themselves playing and singing, instead of singing to a studio track and pretending. Thanks Jesse. 👍👍

Gotta love the manic guitar chuck and the end.😅 with a smile of course. Talk about poetry in motion
that was exactly my thought. beautiful
Say it , poor here, worked my broke ass off still hungry, scratching to survive....I love this young troubadour
“Perfectly good guitar”. 😂 (John Hiatt)
