It's not actually responding to you they just splice clips and put it every so often and my friends and I realised that it just plays randomly sometimes and just breaks the immersion. We turned it off after a while because it was honestly just breaking the game.
The skinwalkers mod is great because it forces you and your friends to say the most unorthodox shit just to prove you are real after enough time. Because normal banter and directions becomes too suspicious after a bit. Whats even better, is after a slightly longer period, the monsters start using the older weird lines too, so you'll just here stuff like "My underwear is purple" at random while in the facility halls.
i also like how in response to "im betting my life on a 50/50" it said "good chance you WERE" implying that now his life was on the line for something else..
i was carrying my friends dead body with me when i heard that same friend eating chips. mortified, i said “youre not him. you cant eat those chips. those were HIS not YOURS.” and as soon as i turned the corner the bracken came rushing at me and said “what are you talking about?” before running off.
I once played a fnaf meme song through my mic and my friend heard a monster mimic it hahaha. I LOVE how they mimic not just voices but random sounds like kb taps too.
This happened to me but with those masked people. I was in March, outside, and going back to the main entrance for the items left out but I saw two people walking towards me. One looked like me, another behind them that looked like my other bud playing. I had to stare for a moment in confusion and then I turned back. Ran from them while saying, “He’s dead, he’s dead! I saw him die, I KNOW he is, you can’t fool me! He’s dead!” Sucks to say I left without the items, but FUCK that.

Everything was completely normal. Then, I returned to the ship, and found out she had died. Afterwards we takjed about it and lot of it was actually her but now we don't even know when it first started to not be her, it was responding with context good enough I didn't catch anything as seeming weird even though I already was thinking about the mod being active.

Once had a baboon hawk happily bounce towards the ship, and announce that it was at the ship. Also had a mimic call: "mic check, hello?" in the voice of the player it was imitating.
From the skinwalkers mod page: "How does it work? It records audio and plays it back at random times from enemies that you choose. Often times it results in some pretty creepy coincidences!" So apparently its just records stuff, and since players normally say something that might match, it repeats it back.
It really is just coincidence, but may seem awfully convenient because of the words that are exchanged. If you play a game that relies on cooperation, there's a good chance most of your words are for cooperation.
It’s definitely more than just recordings, I’ve had enemies say things my buddies have never said, but in their voices. I assume it runs things through some sort of AI.
Funny thing, the mimics can be smart af, like how six days in fallujah enemies are, one could be chasing you to the ship while one hides inside and ambushes you, it’s happened to someone before and it is honestly the most terrifying monster because of that exact reason, as well as them coming outside
turned a corner inside a mansion to see a nutcracker standing just beyond the doorway, it cocked its gun, stared me right in the eyes and (in my friend's voice), shouted "SHITTTTTTTTTT!!" at the top of its lungs. I died 3 times right then: laughter, fear and, a 12 gauge to the face.
We weren't sure how the skinwalker mod fully worked but we could hear our voices. We thought the skinwalker was its own creature and or not a creature at all but just random bits of audio we would hear to scare us. I went in Solo and my friend stayed on the ship. I made a jump then heard something in the room next to me. It then said "I wonder if the skinwalker is a real thing or not". I think personally for me that was the scariest moment in the game.
not knowing how the mod works is the best way to experience it tbh. The unreal fear it can cause with the uncertainty of if thats REALLY your friend or some unknown abomination is so unnerving.
In one of my matches with my friend, we had the mimic mod and skinwalker mod enabled, I was trying to leave and there were two fire exits, I said "I dont truth either of these," then a hoarding bug said in my friend's voice "Dont go left," so I went with the fire exit on the right as a throw-away joke because there was a good chance both doors were mimics. The door I went through was the correct door! Hoarding bugs have been my favorite since then lol.
It would be rad if the skinwalker had a record mechanic where if your voice got to screaming levels,it recorded it and played your screams back when it spotted you

Skinwalker mod once started saying things I say to everyone. Everyone caught on because they knew I was back at the ship. But then it said (almost like a reply in my voice), “No I’m not.” Then it wasn’t until a bunch of people died and also no one found me inside everyone thought I was in there with them… somewhere. There actually already is counterplay for it. If you look closely, the light actually has a orangish glow on the fake ones. And, while your in that weird load time for opening the door, the fire exit can change to "FEED" so you can stop before you get consumed@@amadmadmadhatter276

My creepiest one so far was when I Inverse Teleport in with the boys on Titan, I shouted "Guys? Anyone there?" and I got a reply "Here, here." Only to run to a mask whose back was facing me and killed me immediately on contact. This mod is so good.
it'd be cool if someone made a game based on skin walkers were they get AI to convert spoken words to text then decide which voice clip is the most fitting response to other players questions
That's what I'm waiting for developers to do, all they need to do is record some lines like "Hey guys?" or "Over here" from the players, then if they die the enemy can use it to lure other player Specifically I think it would work in "Into the Backrooms" with the skinwalker things
There's a game that does that, I forgot what it's called, but it's like phasmophobia but with tomb raiding. Although they can't just downright record you, as it would be illegal to, so what the game does is it uses an algorithm to stitch your words together based on speech recognition.

After I had already died, one person stayed behind in the ship and our third and only other went in alone to grab something / find some last minute loot. While spectating him I heard him say “Ram ranch………. Ram Ranch?…….. Ram ranch??……….. Stephen Colbert??” And then run back outside. After spawning back in, he explained that he heard one of us say “Ram Ranch” (I didn’t hear it while spectating) and nothing else while inside. And after starting to freak out because of no response he tried saying “Stephen Colbert??” To get some sort of reaction. But it wasn’t any of us. They mimicked our code word. And we learned we needed to change it up often. I love this game. And this mod mixed with masked enemy overhaul is insane.
Try using a 3 code response, a code to initiate it, something they have to reply with, and a third reply from the person or initiated it to prove they are real too. The odds of the skinwalker using that exact sequence would be astronomical
Yeah, it just grabs voice lines and plays them randomly, so you have to change the words you use otherwise your codewords will get worked into the phrase list it pulls from.

the skinwalker mod is perfect for this game I had a time using it with more company and 5 friends, 2 were dead and the rest of us were outside at the ship doing loot runs from the bottom of the stairs on titan and as I got to the loot the ghost girl chased me up the stairs out of voice range from the ship, then a dog started chasing me up the stairs after the girl had gone so I was stuck up there for a while, as I started crouching down the stairs avoiding the dog it played the voice of one of my alive friends in the ship saying "oh god there's a mimic in the ship" warning me about the mimic so I ended up just jumping into the ship from the stairs as the last one left got grabbed by the mimic letting me pull the lever and escape I'm never gonna forget that moment lady luck must really have a thing for me if she's letting monsters give me callouts
ooh i’ve got a good one. about two days ago maybe i joined a random game with that mod on. when we were looting a bunker on march for quite some time now, i first heard a distant explosion then like a minute later i came back to investigate. i didn’t see a body weirdly so i kept looking and calling out into the darkness. then i heard ‘hello?’ i responded ‘hi, it’s me, Osrelios, u good?’ but before i could finish that i heard ‘oh it’s you, heheh, come help me pick up some loot’. obviously i said ‘yeah coming’. now here’s the creepy part: as i was scanning for that supposed loot i did see some, one of which was a flashlight. that was concerning so i scanned around the corner. and i finally saw a dead body i was so eagerly trying to find. and the one talking to me was a pesky little SNARE FLEA that jump scared me so bad as the whole team watched me suffocate to death. yeah they were all dead i just didn’t know it, all TEN of them. i kept typing stuff in the chat… if you’re wondering how did all fucking 10 people die, it was mostly the dogs because we had brutal company on. one died to a landmine, one to a snare flea, i think someone also died to just backing out from the dogs and drowning in a pool which was hilarious
I love the skinwalkers mod. Once, I was in a building talking to a friend about a potential Bracken when he gets killed by it. The next thing I hear is another friend's voice saying "Nah, I don't think there's a Bracken in there" before slaughtering me too.
That response was just to perfect. Not sure but it feels like the Skinwalker mod has a way to store and read what you said like making a transcript on the spot to learn and if it's in distance tries to respond with a line it has stored fitting best to the conversation it hears. I'm most likely completely wrong with this but it at least seems a bit like it sometimes lol.
At one point my friends and i were talking about milk type preferences in the ship, and apparently those audio clips were saved because later i was hiding from an eyeless dog that cheerfully informed me “whole milk is the only milk i’ll ever drink” as it walked by. I died because i couldnt control my laughter
hahahah thats actually incredible. Yeah they take voice samples from your ENTIRE play session this includes while you're dead AND when you're in the ship ive even had the enemies copy soundboards...
This mod is way too good. I know it's random the way it picks things but for my friend group we almost always get perfectly timed, perfectly selected lines. We've started to question whether or not it's coincidence. I'll share some favorites: - Friend (Drew) and I were sneaking back to the ship. A dog manages to sneak up on him through the fog and kills him. Then a second dog wanders in front of me and, in our other friend's voice, says *"Where's Drew?"* - A coilhead spawned in front of me while I was trying to find my way back with a full inventory. Then I hear "That was fucked up..." and a second one peaks through the doorway to continue: "That was SO fucked up..." (Yes it was, sir.) - Probably my favorite. I went into the main entrance and didn't get to do anything else before a loot bug ran in through the left door, then right back out through the right, yelling "Oh my God! It's a ghost!" while maintaining direct eye contact with me on his way through. I spooked him pretty bad, i guess.
My blood ran cold when he said that. It had the same inflection as if he were sorry about what was coming next. Like he was going to kill you but was at least sorry about it.
Yeah I had known it was physically impossible for him to be there because I was absolutely LOST in the facility so I was BAFFLED but it answered me so perfectly I thought MAYBE Until I heard the bracken move...
Me and my brother, Dylan, were playing Lethal Company. One time, Dylan went into the facility by himself, and at one point he heard my voice. "I'm right behind ya," the voice said. Dylan turned around and saw a Bracken that backed off the moment he turned around. At least the Bracken was being honest!
the line was perfect in so many ways whether that be the delivery of it being so horrifying or the why it said were as if that 50/50 was no long what his life was being weighted on.
First time I encountered a mimic in our sesh, I felt chills going down my spine, and I was harshly reminded what game I was playing. Said friend it imitated had a rather specific way of talking in English, down to the diction, and I believe myself to have sharp hearing. I communicated with her that I was coming back with loot, and I heard her reply "Yes, we're winning guys!" from the bottom of the staircase I was descending. Switched to my walkie and realized it died a long time ago, and I suddenly circled back to another exit like someone just poured ice down my back.
This reminded me of the time when me and two friends played with the goku bracken mod and skinwalker mod combined, the both of them were stuck near a bracken (with the goku skin) and it said "Hey, its me! Goku!" in my voice.
i had a friend who just started playing the game from the next room go "dude, I'm so lost" and I was like "Yo, over here, come over." and then it was silence and then I knew I had to haul ass.
Our worst skinwalker experience was when a coilhead that just killed me said to our last teammate that was still alive "I`m watching the coilhead" in my voice. Dude almost turned his back to him but saw my corpse lying in the corner in the last second.
the scary part about the mimic is that even stuff like this doesnt work, people have tried code words and the mimic will eventually just copy the code word as well
I remember once being on ship duty and seeing one of my friend seemingly getting cornered by a Coilhead soni teleported them in the ship without a second thought, he then said "Great." And i told him to get on the inverse teleporter to get back, i hear him walk for a second, then after realizing the teleporter did not teleport him i turn around to ask him and he throws up at my face… turns out he was getting killed by a mimic earlier inside…
i usually use my soundpad to play music on mic when i play, played with a bunch of friends, thumper starts mimicking my music, never been so scared in my life to hear this loud noise randomly start playing as a thumper chases after me

this is like, genuinely the most terrifying mod i've ever seen for any game. like it takes a decently scary game, which is already impressive for a low graphics coop game with an integrated dance button and ice cream jingle, and makes it so terrifying on a level i have never seen in any other game. in a game where the proximity chat is the most reliable form of communication, hearing your friend's voice nearby knowing it isnt them just throws you off so badly.

I know the mod doesn't actually tailor pick clips but when it hits right it really hits. My first time encountering a skinwalker I was holed up in the ship behind the closed door and was checking to see if anyone was alive on the monitor. Then I heard footsteps outside and called out "Anyone alive out there?" and got the response "No one is". I realized immediately what it was and booked it instantly lmao.
*Fun fact with papyrus!: If you hover your camera to the fake fire exist, it'll say "Feed" instead, Also you need to look around near the fake fire exist, since they're be blood, or if you hit it with a shovel or sign it will make a noise! The more you know!
Had what felt like a full conversation with a buddy about how I was stuck and needed help. Found out he was on the ship the whole time afterwards. 10/10 Would use the skinwalker mod again.

turned a corner inside a mansion to see a nutcracker standing just beyond the doorway, it cocked its gun, stared me right in the eyes and (in my friend's voice), shouted "SHITTTTTTTTTT!!" at the top of its lungs. I died 3 times right then: laughter, fear and, a 12 gauge to the face.

We weren't sure how the skinwalker mod fully worked but we could hear our voices. We thought the skinwalker was its own creature and or not a creature at all but just random bits of audio we would hear to scare us. I went in Solo and my friend stayed on the ship. I made a jump then heard something in the room next to me. It then said "I wonder if the skinwalker is a real thing or not". I think personally for me that was the scariest moment in the game.
not knowing how the mod works is the best way to experience it tbh. The unreal fear it can cause with the uncertainty of if thats REALLY your friend or some unknown abomination is so unnerving.
In one of my matches with my friend, we had the mimic mod and skinwalker mod enabled, I was trying to leave and there were two fire exits, I said "I dont truth either of these," then a hoarding bug said in my friend's voice "Dont go left," so I went with the fire exit on the right as a throw-away joke because there was a good chance both doors were mimics. The door I went through was the correct door! Hoarding bugs have been my favorite since then lol.

There actually already is counterplay for it. If you look closely, the light actually has a orangish glow on the fake ones. And, while your in that weird load time for opening the door, the fire exit can change to "FEED" so you can stop before you get consumed@@amadmadmadhatter276
apparently there are some signs that it is fake. sometimes the door will say "feed" instead of "exit", apparently the red light is brighter than the real exit which i think can even be seen in this video if i'm not mistaken and also the door can be a different shade of red @@amadmadmadhatter276 @milokiss8276

My creepiest one so far was when I Inverse Teleport in with the boys on Titan, I shouted "Guys? Anyone there?" and I got a reply "Here, here." Only to run to a mask whose back was facing me and killed me immediately on contact. This mod is so good.
it'd be cool if someone made a game based on skin walkers were they get AI to convert spoken words to text then decide which voice clip is the most fitting response to other players questions

Although they can't just downright record you, as it would be illegal to, so what the game does is it uses an algorithm to stitch your words together based on speech recognition.

My buddies and I came up with a safe word to identify ourselves to prove we weren’t skinwalkers. We decided on “Ram Ranch”. Cause it’s funny. And easy to say…
One time. After I had already died, one person stayed behind in the ship and our third and only other went in alone to grab something / find some last minute loot.
While spectating him I heard him say “Ram ranch………. Ram Ranch?…….. Ram ranch??……….. Stephen Colbert??” And then run back outside.
After spawning back in, he explained that he heard one of us say “Ram Ranch” (I didn’t hear it while spectating) and nothing else while inside. And after starting to freak out because of no response he tried saying “Stephen Colbert??” To get some sort of reaction. But it wasn’t any of us. They mimicked our code word. And we learned we needed to change it up often.
I love this game. And this mod mixed with masked enemy overhaul is insane.

Try using a 3 code response, a code to initiate it, something they have to reply with, and a third reply from the person or initiated it to prove they are real too. The odds of the skinwalker using that exact sequence would be astronomical
Yeah, it just grabs voice lines and plays them randomly, so you have to change the words you use otherwise your codewords will get worked into the phrase list it pulls from.
I wouldn't be surprised if the dev impliments mods like these...skinwalker is honestly terrifying.

I had a time using it with more company and 5 friends, 2 were dead and the rest of us were outside at the ship doing loot runs from the bottom of the stairs on titan and as I got to the loot the ghost girl chased me up the stairs out of voice range from the ship, then a dog started chasing me up the stairs after the girl had gone so I was stuck up there for a while, as I started crouching down the stairs avoiding the dog it played the voice of one of my alive friends in the ship saying "oh god there's a mimic in the ship" warning me about the mimic so I ended up just jumping into the ship from the stairs as the last one left got grabbed by the mimic letting me pull the lever and escape
I'm never gonna forget that moment lady luck must really have a thing for me if she's letting monsters give me callouts
The mimic had your back haha I've only had them try to confuse me i've yet to have them be helpful thats sick
ooh i’ve got a good one. about two days ago maybe i joined a random game with that mod on. when we were looting a bunker on march for quite some time now, i first heard a distant explosion then like a minute later i came back to investigate. i didn’t see a body weirdly so i kept looking and calling out into the darkness.
then i heard ‘hello?’ i responded ‘hi, it’s me, Osrelios, u good?’ but before i could finish that i heard ‘oh it’s you, heheh, come help me pick up some loot’. obviously i said ‘yeah coming’.
now here’s the creepy part: as i was scanning for that supposed loot i did see some, one of which was a flashlight. that was concerning so i scanned around the corner. and i finally saw a dead body i was so eagerly trying to find. and the one talking to me was a pesky little SNARE FLEA that jump scared me so bad as the whole team watched me suffocate to death. yeah they were all dead i just didn’t know it, all TEN of them. i kept typing stuff in the chat…
if you’re wondering how did all fucking 10 people die, it was mostly the dogs because we had brutal company on. one died to a landmine, one to a snare flea, i think someone also died to just backing out from the dogs and drowning in a pool which was hilarious

I love the skinwalkers mod. Once, I was in a building talking to a friend about a potential Bracken when he gets killed by it. The next thing I hear is another friend's voice saying "Nah, I don't think there's a Bracken in there" before slaughtering me too.

That response was just to perfect. Not sure but it feels like the Skinwalker mod has a way to store and read what you said like making a transcript on the spot to learn and if it's in distance tries to respond with a line it has stored fitting best to the conversation it hears. I'm most likely completely wrong with this but it at least seems a bit like it sometimes lol.

At one point my friends and i were talking about milk type preferences in the ship, and apparently those audio clips were saved because later i was hiding from an eyeless dog that cheerfully informed me “whole milk is the only milk i’ll ever drink” as it walked by. I died because i couldnt control my laughter
hahahah thats actually incredible. Yeah they take voice samples from your ENTIRE play session this includes while you're dead AND when you're in the ship ive even had the enemies copy soundboards...

This mod is way too good. I know it's random the way it picks things but for my friend group we almost always get perfectly timed, perfectly selected lines. We've started to question whether or not it's coincidence.
I'll share some favorites:
- Friend (Drew) and I were sneaking back to the ship. A dog manages to sneak up on him through the fog and kills him. Then a second dog wanders in front of me and, in our other friend's voice, says *"Where's Drew?"*
- A coilhead spawned in front of me while I was trying to find my way back with a full inventory. Then I hear "That was fucked up..." and a second one peaks through the doorway to continue: "That was SO fucked up..." (Yes it was, sir.)
- Probably my favorite. I went into the main entrance and didn't get to do anything else before a loot bug ran in through the left door, then right back out through the right, yelling "Oh my God! It's a ghost!" while maintaining direct eye contact with me on his way through. I spooked him pretty bad, i guess.
I think it's just that it prefers shorter voice clips, so the chances of getting something generic enough to fit multiple contexts isn't super low.

Dylan turned around and saw a Bracken that backed off the moment he turned around. At least the Bracken was being honest!

First time I encountered a mimic in our sesh, I felt chills going down my spine, and I was harshly reminded what game I was playing.
Said friend it imitated had a rather specific way of talking in English, down to the diction, and I believe myself to have sharp hearing. I communicated with her that I was coming back with loot, and I heard her reply "Yes, we're winning guys!" from the bottom of the staircase I was descending. Switched to my walkie and realized it died a long time ago, and I suddenly circled back to another exit like someone just poured ice down my back.

this is like, genuinely the most terrifying mod i've ever seen for any game. like it takes a decently scary game, which is already impressive for a low graphics coop game with an integrated dance button and ice cream jingle, and makes it so terrifying on a level i have never seen in any other game. in a game where the proximity chat is the most reliable form of communication, hearing your friend's voice nearby knowing it isnt them just throws you off so badly.
