    Three-time Academy Award® winner Daniel Day-Lewis (There Will Be Blood, My Left Foot, Lincoln) and two-time Academy Award® nominee Emily Watson (Breaking The Waves) are star-crossed lovers torn between unquestioning loyalty to the ties of tradition and the passion they share in this critically acclaimed film from director Jim Sheridan (The Field, In America). Freed from jail 14 years after getting involved with the Irish Republican Army, Danny Flynn (Day-Lewis) returns home to his Belfast neighborhood, where he opens a gym and reconnects with his lost love, Maggie (Watson). But Danny's former life - in the person of his former IRA compatriots - comes back to haunt him.

      Word. Method actor gets thrown around all the time right now. DDL is the real deal. Its a little hack to say but Ledger's Joker is the only other performance where I could not see the actor behind the character. I always wanted to dig up some B-roll of him in costume as himself. But I highly doubt much exists.

      I feel like Day Lewis really captures the look and vibe of older, more traditional boxers, will Gyllenhaal captures the look of new boxers. One has the body of an average man, and is relying mainly on technique and grit to win, while the other is chiseled and muscly, relying much more on raw power and striking strength to win.

  • @strutherhill

    Looked pretty convincing up until the KO -- then back to Rocky territory. Perhaps decided to make it cartoonish for the punters who don't know much about the sweet science -- tho' I'm surprised DDL went along with it.

    • @fastkarr8256
      @fastkarr8256 3 года назад

      @strutherhill what was unrealistic about the knockout punch?

    • @strutherhill
      @strutherhill 3 года назад +1

      @@fastkarr8256 I should explain: for my money DDL is a great actor -- the finest film actor I've seen. My complaint is just a minor niggle. The boxing up till that point had been very tight and convincing. But, after the second knockdown, when the ref moves out of the way, DDL rushes across the ring and has a two-step run-up before he belts the opponent. Something like that might happen in a pub car-park, but it's unlikely in a pro ring, because the opponent must have enough ringcraft to dodge a punch that's so well telegraphed.

    • @strutherhill
      @strutherhill 3 года назад +1

      @no name That's a fair point; he did look less than fully alert! The ref shouldn't have allowed the fight to continue. To be honest, that had occurred to me before, but I didn't want to seem to be hurling criticism at everything. Perhaps we can agree that the fight scenes are well done, but they are after all fictional?

    • @SonoftheWars
