This was a Godsend!! I was mulling buying a replacement top for the washer, which would have set me back $100-200, but thanks to this video, I was able to fix it up for only $14!
Thank you for the video. It seems like this is a common Samsung problem. Very disappointed. We never even use the bleach dispenser. I am very surprise that Samsung would not suggest any repair or ways to take care of it when we purchased the washer so the rust will not develop at the first place.
Thank you for the instructional video for this issue. I was going to tackle this rust problem on my Samsung washing machine then suddenly the matching dryer stopped working (would not stop spinning but with no heat). Both were bought at the same time two years ago. Bought a replacement part and saved 50% off the authorized Samsung repair quote. They don't make appliances like they used to.
Thanks for the video. I watched it years ago and waited until today to do the repair. (Yeah, I know. Rust doesn't get any better.) I searched for and found it again last week. My washer is an LG and is built very, very similarly. The video was very helpful to making this repair.
The rust occurs even if you never put bleach in the dispenser. My machine is 5 years old and I have never used bleach in the dispenser and that entire corner of the machine is rusted out.
Same thing here..Very expensive Samsung washer, the bleach compartment rusted after a few years…Seems like it’s a common problem, and not covered by warranty…I won’t ever buy Samsung again…I had my last washer 20 years, never a problem, I should’ve stuck with Whirlpool…
Just fixed my 16 1/2 year old Frigidare washer, which was rusting like this. It had rust on the bottom side also. I primed all of it before painting with the appliance paint.
Dealing with this junk also on a 3 year old Samsung. I’m wondering if taking the top and having powder coated will last longer then the paint. Don’t want this to keep happening. Seems like it’s most of the washers now having this issue. Pretty sure they all made in the same place anyways then just rebranded. Kinda like tv’s, tires, etc
Nice vid, straight to the point & broken down damn good. You just gained a subscriber. But just a reference to others.. & this might not be a good thing so make your own decisions BUT I didn't have to unscrew anything. I literally pulled the blue part up and it popped out. After doing that many times & popping it back in it still hasn't loosened at all. I still recommend doing it his way but that worked for me when it came to removing it 😂
I am dealing with the same problem. The bleach is corrossive, however looking at it there is a gap between the the bleach tray and cover which I plan to seal using a silicone to prevent water from going up and sitting in that crevice.
FYI - If your Samsung washer was repaired for the exploding top recall, you can not remove your washer top since it has now been bolted in place. It took about an hour of trying to figure out why the top would could not be removed. It then dawned on me it had been bolted on. So you have to remove blue tray and sand and paint in place.
thegary clark it’s not bolted on. If you watch some of the repair videos you can see it’s on like a zig zag bolt now. You will need to pull forward and up to get the top off of it.
I followed your instructions for the repair except I used Ospho rust treatment before coating with paint because my metal was so thin I was unable to remove all the rust. Hoping to get a few more years out of my washer and not get rust stains on my clothes. Manufacturers need to know that this is a design defect and work to fix it!!!!
This happened with my Maytag Bravos XL mine is to the point where it has holes in the metal. I’m going to try using bondo and then paint it with the rustoleum paint you used. We can’t find a replacement top as parts are no longer made for the model we have & I haven’t been able to find a used one. If it fails we were planning to buy a new one anyway so this is a last ditch effort to try to get another year out of it. I plan to just use the laundry detergent compartment to add the bleach, I don’t use that for laundry detergent anyway because I use powdered detergent.
Dealing with this with Kenmore Elite. They basically don't care and just want to sell you warranties. Thanks for the info. Will be trying this fix out soon.
Just noticed this problem developing and watched this video. One thing I will be doing is applying a rust preventative to the rusted area before painting.
Three washers with same problem NEVER USE BLEACH DISPENSER is only way to save it or when new look under dispenser area and paint is rust proof paint... Such a rip off
will this method provide access to the lip the runs the circumference of the drum? I have found that the rust is not limited to only at the bleach receptacle.
Great video. We have exact problem and thanks thegark clark re: the exploding top recall issue because we had that done too. So looks like sanding, painting in place!!
my washer has rusted significantly after 10 years of ownership with the rust extending well beyond the bleach well.. can the top element be replaced in its entirety?
Hopefully this will be seen... I have the exact (or very close) model as in this demonstration, same brackets and all, and the top (repaired in the recall) won't lift or slide in any direction. Any guidance would be appreciated.
Nvm, I sorted it out once I got in there with a mirror and a flashlight. The POS who did the retrofit did NOT install new brackets, he BOLTED the top to the body. In two places.
I've had my Samsung about 10 years-- large drum. I wash an average of 3 loads a day and have had a repair person only about twice. The lid under the inside lip is rusting and pieces of rust and paint are chipping off into the wash load. I've even thought of using Bondo to temporarily patch. I don't want to sand the entire inside lid, and once I start sanding, I may end up having to sand the entire inside lip. I'll try the suggestion in this video before Bondo and sand lightly. thanks for video
When I repaired the bleach dispenser on the LG I used a Dremel tool to remove the rust and painted using Rustoleum and a small brush. It has held for about two years. If you look close you can tell there was a fix, but so what. BTW, we now use water diluted Clorox 2 directly into the tub.
That’s how mine is, the only alternative I can think of is don’t use the bleach compartment and add the bleach in where liquid detergent would go and just seal off the entire bleach compartment area I’m going to try bondo (sp?) I told my husband I was thinking about using a piece of the mesh you use when fixing a hole in drywall and use bondo with it idk if it will work but I’m going to try it before we buy a new washer.
I have a different question: I have a Samsung HE top loader, when I was cleaning the fabric softer compartment and put back the Max line thing, is it suppose to pop on tight or does it do that when it in the washer compartment?
When I put the plastic cup back on, it seem seem loose, it have a little notched at the end, hopefully it snapped in when I put it back into the washer. I was afraid if I pressed too hard would break it of slitting it of where the little notched is at. The drawer was not easy to get out.
I have only had my LG washing machine 6 years this last December bought the extended warranty for $130. Keep in mind my washing machine was almost 850 on sale it kind of looks the same almost exactly the same as the one in the video. But I cannot remove the bleach tray. And it has a blue thing like that over beside the detergent tray that is also rusting and part of the lid when you close it or rusting I do not have the glass lid. What does the warranty cover. I was on the phone for an hour and a half between four different people including a manager. Which she did not care and was quite rude sent me to the warranty center who filed a complaint. As I read all the comments not just on here but reviews a lot of people have the same issues with the self-balancing and the rusting. I myself do not use a lot of bleach at all because I have a severe skin allergy and my son does as well. I also wipe it down and clean it every few weeks because I am extremely OCD. As a company if there are several of the same problems which I have viewed over 5,000 of them of course I cannot read them all on the same type things wouldn't you want to fix your product. Doesn't sound that way. I am not stupid I know eventually things wear and tear no matter how well you try to take care of them but again I don't even use a lot of bleach at all and it has only been 6 years this past December 20 17. It is May twenty of 18 now. It is absolutely ridiculous. And I am curious. Although this is a great video and very informative. I think the LG needs to fix the problems they are having. Same her LG washer case around bleach try rust and corrsion after just 2 to 3 years only 2 people using machine junk Did you see if warrenty covered this
I have an LG washer, too. It's close to 7 years old now, so I think we're in the same time frame. My plastic insert around the bleach fill port does, in fact, come out. However, it was stubborn and wouldnt come out by hand like the video shows. I had to insert a large screwdriver in through the hole in the bottom center and gently apply a little prying force. Once one side begins to lift, the other clips disengage pretty easily. I found a Dremel tool with a small wire wheel made removing the years of rust underneath much easier. Also, after lifting the lid, I found a fair amount of rust on the underside in several places, too. I gave those a quick scrub with a wire brush and applied a couple of coats of Rustoleum primer while it was open.
You should be able to remove your bleach tray in a similar manner. Although we haven't done this on an LG, we find that they have a lot of designs in common with Samsung.
not enough detail shown in this video. When removing main top, what else needs to be removed, Electrical ? I also assume, there isn't available paint to match the color of the washer.
I have a LG, and having the same exact problem and it's not even a year old. These new machines are nothing but a piece of expense JUNK. I think you come out better buying or repairing the old machine. Thanks for the information.
it's not just a samsung problem.. LG has this problem also.. it's horrifically cheap steel.. which makes cheap products that are cheap for the manufacturer o produce but expensive for the consumer to buy

NOTE: It appears that the root cause of the rust is due to the spray mechanism that dilutes and distributes the bleach through Samsung's bleach delivery system to the washing machine drum. IMHO, the spray mechanism causes water to splash off the White Tray and on to the sheet metal tray holder, which then is wicked in-between the White Tray and the Blue Bleach Fill Tray that sits above the White Tray. Ensure Silicone is applied to the metal lip that the White Bleach Tray is retained by. If everything's OK, wait 24 hours and: 7. Replace the Blue Fill Tray back into the White Bleach Tray (interference fit) Reassemble, per the reverse directions from the RUclips video. Enjoy (HOPEFULLY) Rust-Free Clothes Washing!!!
People need a video for this? I thought it was common sense. I'll give a like for production value. I did mine similar last week. But, taped everything off and cover the drum with cardboard. Just like painting a portion of a car.
I’m pretty sure you unplugged machine first, but that should be stated at the beginning. And on the spray painting ‘you may want to do this outside’ (not practical !) should be replaced with ‘wear a mask for protection from toluene fumes.’
I’m now in the process of filing a class action lawsuit against Samsung. They sent repairmen who just look at the rust and take photos but don’t fix it. When I call, they give me the runaround and send me on this circuitous goose chase if phone transfers. I once stayed on the line on hold for over an hour before the connection was lost IE they hung up on me. DO NOT BUY A SAMSUNG PRODUCT!!!!!
So you buy something that you think‘s gonna be a good product. What a piece of shit mine turned out to be the whole top is rusted breaking rust. You did a great job for me Samsung you taught me something. That’s something is that I will never never ever trust your piece of shit company ever again I would not purchase anything that’s got your name on it at all. I know you don’t care I’m just a customer gone forever!
I have the SAME problem with my samsung washer. This sucks cause washer and dryer cost $1,000 and when I told Sears about it they said they wouldnt replace it. I think Samsung should be sued, their products shouldnt rust. Back in the day with the older models? This never happened with moms washer and she always used bleach on her white clothes. This is a manufacturer flaw. Smh..They make crap these days. Look where it came from
Step one- get rid it if and don't buy Asian washer dryers or ant appliances they are all junk and poorly made. Samsung LG make good phones tvs but have no idea how to make appliances be it washer druers, fridges, freezees, dishwashers.
Thank you! I know this was posted years ago, but it’s still helping people!

If you've had the exploding top fix applied [bolting] you're not going to be able to get the white bleach tray out.
People need a video for this? I thought it was common sense. I'll give a like for production value. I did mine similar last week. But, taped everything off and cover the drum with cardboard. Just like painting a portion of a car.
We did. I learned how to pop the bleach tray out. ours is really in there and was afraid of breaking it.
Dealing with the same problem with my Samsung washer
Never buy Samsung again, to many issues
I’m pretty sure you unplugged machine first, but that should be stated at the beginning. And on the spray painting ‘you may want to do this outside’ (not practical !) should be replaced with ‘wear a mask for protection from toluene fumes.’
I’d like to think this is common sense!
Junk LG IS DOING THE SAME THING RUSTING
Look where it came from
Garbage, I'll never buy another Samsung. They should stick to phones.
Step one- get rid it if and don't buy Asian washer dryers or ant appliances they are all junk and poorly made. Samsung LG make good phones tvs but have no idea how to make appliances be it washer druers, fridges, freezees, dishwashers.
so what do i do if the rust has overtaken almost the entire corner..
