Watching this as a Federer fan leaves me a little worried but the unpredictability is what this sport is all about. There are good days and bad ones but one thing is unchanged - The legend is back on grass!
To all the Roger haters and criticizers..Roger was still cautious about his knees so he limited his movement and just worked on his serv in firstset..so once the set was in the bag, he started moving around somewhat in second set..and he also got 4 break points in set 2 ..even though he played in RG grass is news to him after surgery ..of all things he wants to protect his knees.after almost a year of sitting up he doesn.t want to go bck in hibernation .and atleast play for. Some length of time. He doesn't need to be in his best form to beat ivashka who was still good bit not enough against Roger..he is Roger Federer ...so he.ll find a way to win even when he's not in good form..whenever he plays he is a delight to watch for everyone ..doesn't matter if he wins or not...he.ll definitely bring out his best tennis when it is required...
What a starting point of highlights👍👍👍
Federer the king
King of weak era, and king of fedtards.
I think Roger played a good match. My impression is that he’s testing different shots. He wants to test his skill level at this point. As he goes along ( I hope for the next few matches) he will improve his shot making. Having said all of this I believe he will improve his first service percentage and work on reducing unforced errors. I hope Federer fans understand this is a process. As for Joker and Nadal fans, you should hope Federer plays his best tennis to ensure a positive and competitive run for all. Remember he has been a wonderful influence on all young players around the globe.
Totally agree with you Timothy, I think we understand this is a process, he certainly knows what he's doing. Calculating, mature and progressive. Only he knows what's best for himself, nobody else including the sideline commentators who have never picked up a racquet in their lives lol x
I hope he is testing around. Ivashka had loads of opportunities with poorly placed volleys and dropshots from Roger any other higher ranked player would have obliterated. If he wants to stick around in the top 10 he has to up his game.
Wouldn't it make more sense to use different color balls on grass? Something with more contrast would work better, especially on screen.
we have been through this, plus it would probably disturb some of the players
They use to use white balls remember??
@@maxwelldewinter I still think white balls would be perfect for grass (maybe even for clay). Besides, TV viewers weren't watching full HD video back then when the decision to use yellow balls was made. I think some of the historical reasons for the change may be irrelevant today.
@@J.-M. That decision is up to the players not the viewers! Optic yellow is perfect for the blue hardcourts! I have no problem following the ball on a HD monitor! I have 3 cans of (4 balls) Slazenger white balls unopened if you wish to purchase.
@@maxwelldewinter TV viewers were the reason for the change to yellow balls. They didn't even have blue hardcourts back then. But technical standards in the old times (1970s, 1980s) were vastly different from today. That's why I think the decision could be reconsidered. The main obstacle today I think is just habit.

Federer's almost 40 and he's still playing quality tennis. Incredible Legend 👍🏿
He is playing remarkable for his 7th match since his operations and recovery. I watched the whole match and was extremely impressed with his game. Even by the end of the match a huge difference to how he had started, his timing improved, seeing the ball and hitting early. This man is so gifted.....happy with this progress. xx If he gets a lot of match play he will definately do well at Wimbledon, his experience & mental toughness makes the difference in the crucial tie breakers and points. Let's not forget he is almost 40 (unheard of) and playing men in their prime who are blasting the balls back, it's amazing really.
Roger’s fan here… hope he can keep playing but in reality all good things come to an end… with how he plays right now, he would be lucky to get to quarter in Wimbledon

Great to see Mirka once more, Roger definitely made the right decision to leave the dirt behind, grass is where he belongs to !!!
Slow start but still an impressive win considering Ivashka played very well too.
Why is it called the dirt? Because clay is slow, and no where near as prestigious as grass.

@@Anticommunism99 I know it looks more likely. I thought this might be intersting. Nadal hasn't beaten Djokovic outside a clay court since US Open 2013. 10 losses in a row(9 on Hard, 1 on Grass). Federer hasn't beaten Djokovic in a grand slam since 2012 Wimblodon. 6 grand slam losses in a row. Djokovic is clearly the favourite when he comes up against these guys. I just hope Nadal and Federer can conjure up some old magic to dethrone Djokovic. It's pretty clear to me the nextgen guys are worthless.
@@chamindujanith6337 Novak Djokovic 😂
Roger's final ever ATP event, his last ever win at ATP level (grand slams are not ATP). Nowhere near his best but still toughed it out and got the win.
Just passing through on my journey to watch every Federer match.
To echo a point made down the line. I see your amazing comment and say this. This legend is almost 40 in 2 months and is a threat to WIN Wimbledon. He's not just a dark horse if odds makers have him at less than 3rd to win it their crazy. He also knows that he is the only human being capable of stopping Nole from the calendar slam this year which is absurd but highly probable if no on stops him at Wimbledon. Hard court season is Novak season.
US open isnt free for Novak either. Out of his 12 hard court grand slams 9 have been the AO and only 3 have been US open (2011, 2015, 2018). Novak is definitly the favourite but it probably wont be easy.
Unfortunately the days of Federer winning grand slams are gone, honestly I just hope he retires sooner rather than later. It’s hard to watch players who used to be in contention for every major age and be beaten or even pushed to the brink by guys who never would have stood a chance back in the guy’s prime
Yh I had the same thought for Venus Williams. No one beats father time
well he's not being beaten. he might never beat djoker again though, not unless he musters everything for one final major. a swang song for the ages. would be beautiful
I mean hes chillin bro. Got to french 4R as a warmup tourney. Hes gonna play bad for this year. 2022 will be a good year. Probably no more gs tho
Would you retire if you were playing the sport you loved and still making hundreds of thousands of dollars? It doesn't take away his crazy grandslam success.
Isn't he a guy who reached final of wimbledon 2019 played longest final wimbledon ever and was better than Djokovic in every parameter in final
Tht tie break in 5th saved djoker
Dont count him out
Just for the ones ignoring this, in the open era, Federer is BY FAR the greatest player, with 19 titles. The 2nd isn't Djoko nor Murray nor Nadal of course, but Sampras, with... 10 titles, "only" the half.
Before the open era, some had way more... cause all the Slam + most of the tournaments were played on grass, so, it's logical. Fed plays only 2 of them by year, sometimes 3.
So, even if he doesn't win this year, at least it won't change this fact.
No hay nadie más grande que su majestad..

perhaps you are correct. But it seems true that Federer loves to play the game, especially on grass. How long he wants to play is entirely his decision -- win or lose.
NextGen, results, Djokovic, Nadal -- all this has nothing to do with someone's love for the game.
Also, NextGen is slowly approaching, sure. But, in the words of Djokovic -- "I will make them work their asses off." He has lived up to his word in GS finals against Thiem, Medvedev, Tsitsipas, and matches against Zverev and others.
EDIT: NextGen is yet to win a slam in which any of the Big 3 played (US Open 2020 -- Djokovic was defaulted, and Federer and Nadal were absent.)

RF needs to go for more early winners on grass. It doesn't seem he has the capacity to hit winners consistently from the baseline. The slice backhand is not very useful anymore
Good point about shortening the rallies. But that slice backhand is still lethal - just think about the backspin he puts on those balls, returning those with a reasonably safe net clearence is extremely difficult, you need to put a lot of spin on the ball, but you can't be hitting it too hard, so it lands short and high on the other side, much easier to attack.
