The greatest _pure_ *player* and *shotmaker* to play this wonderful sport. He may not end up as its most successful winner (though he'll be right up there), but he did something much greater than just winning - he singly-handedly _elevated_ the sport by creating and revealing a new aesthetics for it. To put it simply - tennis incarnated itself in the Fed.

No offense to Fed, but what really bugs a lot of NON Fed fans is how suddenly the parameters for being the “greatest” changed as soon as Federer was overtaken in career accomplishments by two players. Before, I remember his fans were all snobbish and talked about he’s the greatest because of his records. Now, it’s his “beauty” that makes him the best.

The reason why Federer is the greatest is his tennis. Incredible though they are, Novak is essentially a defensive player and Rafa is essentially a boxer with a tennis racket. Federer wasn’t just an artist he played ruthless offence. He was a killer with silk gloves. There’s a reason why most players and fans say he was the greatest. It’s because he was.

Too true. The description of Rafa is one of the better ones I've seen...though his racquet skills and talent are not too far behind the Fed. (The Djoker is quite a long way back.) The thing people don't often realize about the Fed is: between 2003-2009, he was _simultaneously_ his sport's aesthetic touchstone, greatest shotmaker, and most prolific winner. No other player in _any_ individual sport has ever done this before. Outside of those years - he still remained its greatest and most inventive _elite_ shotmaker and aesthetic gold standard.

Of the Big 3, currently most records are against Federer, but he seems to enjoy the game much more than others. He is willing to play high risk shots, take ball on half volley or even innovate new shots.
Casual brilliance is something you can associate with Federer unlike Rafa or Novak. Kyrgios is another player that comes to mind when thinking of casual brilliance.
Federer game style is like Messi's. Lots of talent and less physical.
Whereas, Novak or Rafa style is like Ronaldo's, where the game is a lot more physical.

Yes, he is a crazy great athlete. But he has also honed his craft to a razor's edge, and is always willing to work to improve his game. Talent is one thing, craft is another. Genetics vs desire and dedication. Some of them have been more successful or efficient perhaps, but Fed is the *only* player in the history of _any_ individual sport to *simultaneously* be that sport's aesthetic touchstone, its greatest shotmaker, and its most prolific winner. @@ferguson7128 for sure, as fed got older he lost his fitness and groundstroke game and to compensate he had to do other things like mix it up and play ultra aggressive with more points at net. Djokovic took advantage of his deteriorated baseline game and barely used to beat fed. In fact fed still used to beat novak even though his baseline weapons and fitness were not there anymore. However, against a prime fed, just putting the ball into play and praying fed will make an error would not work. You had to play ultra aggressive, and hit extraordinary shots to beat prime fed, because fed was the best offensive and defensive player at the same time, and could outrally anyone. People forget how fast and agile fed was in his 20’s.

    • @thesoccergod
      @thesoccergod Год назад +1

@@goderer2057 Very true. There's a reason the Fed held MPs in 3 of the 4 GS matches they played in 2011 and 2012, the first two years of the Djoker's dominance. The H2H was 2-2, but it really should have been 3-1 to the Fed. This was Fed in the 29-31 years period. When the Djoker went on a streak again in 2015, the Fed was 5-3 against him that year, with a 0-2 record in the slams. This was Fed when he was 33-34 y.o. All these stats show is that the Fed was slowing down at the same time the Djoker was operating at his physical peak. In Bof3 matches, he had little problem staying with and beating the Djoker, but faltered in the longer matches against the sport's greatest RoS and most flexible baseline attritionalist...which is hardly surprising. I mean, Fed is not just 5.8 years older than Djoker, he had the slams record and at least 3-4 times as many "match miles" in his legs as the Djoker did when he began to start to make his mark in tennis history in 2011. Fed is by far the greater racquet talent and shotmaker of the two; outside of his sublime RoS (one the game's greatest shots), the Djoker is, like you said, a baseline backboard who relied almost completely on putting the ball back into play and hoping for Fed to make an error. When that didn't happen, he was given a thrashing - like in their WTF 2019 playoff match.

I think today that in the top 10 there is just one single-handed backhand player, it is becoming more and more clear the advantage of playing double-handed in modern tennis. This means that what Federer did will gradually be put in the correct perspective and 20 slams should be multiplied by a weight of difficulty, only then you get a fair comparison. If Federer's the favorite player you love to watch playing, complete with his significant accomplishments, who cares if he's statistically not the greatest...Kobe Bryant was not the GOAT statistically either but he was still my favorite NBA player...they both demonstrated great artistry on the court so to me they are the most watchable players...I never get bored watching them play. That's what I think is the most important when it comes to professional sports.

The Swiss Miss and the Swiss Maestro were the reason I started watching tennis. Personally I don't think there will ever be a greater player than him 💖 I could watch him all day.
    Happy 41st Birthday 🎂

The GOAT conversation will go on for ages. The question of the most talented player to ever play the game has been answered. Don't know if Roger will ever be dethroned from that title.

4:12 just look at that!! That could happen at ANY given moment in a Federer match. That's why he was so special, so fun to watch, and so adored worldwide. Will never be another one like him

"I think Federer, out of the other three guys, Federer can make you feel really bad, like he makes you want to leave the court. He can make things seem really quick and that the court's really small."
Nadal and Djokovic, they allow you to play a little bit from the back and if you're not playing great, then you struggle," Kyrgios said.

I don't believe in the GOAT status, every big player was special in their way. I do believe that Federer is by far the most appealing to watch. He can execute every shot in the book and make it feel like it's nothing too hard. He always tries to invent new spectacular shots, even though he has a bad position in the rally. A true human highlight reel.
PS: Don't start GOAT conversation in this comment, all of them retire at one point and it doesn't feel the same. So just enjoy it while you can.

The best player of all time. Federer at his best , would destroy Djokovic

I also believe that Federer is a better player than Djokovic. It is just that once he started going towards mid 30s, he played Djoker a lot more and Djoker got the better of him in close matches. Until 2013, Federer was ahead in their head to head. Yes djoker beat him in 2008 AO which was big but in general, Prime Fed would be much better than Prime Djokovic (in match up). I doubt a 2011 Djokovic would beat a 2005/2006 Federer. Only exception is Nadal on Clay. Fed just has the most versatile and entertaining game. No disrespect to Djoker and Nadal though. They are legends for sure.
