    Another great video. It's always funny how the rest of the RUclips woodworkers seem to have projects with similar aspects immediately following Marc's... But there's only one who speaks so softly to wood.

    Thank you for the endorsement of "natural finishes" and for staying away from the costly proprietary bunch. You're right; the choice of finish is personal and should be suited to the use the piece will be put to.

    June 17, 2038. Whilst moving into their Retirement home/workshop somewhere in western Montana, the movers damage the top of their beloved sideboard. Nicole is crushed. Marc carefully examines the front board of the top; the rest of the joint held but the end domino has inexplicably failed along with the glue. Upon closer examination the domino slot appears to have Dowels in it, three of them, instead of a domino, and they've all snapped off. Marc grabs his magnifier for an even closer look, and picks up the faintest odor, like very, very stale pretzels. Long-forgotten memory synapses stir restlessly, there was something.... something. Somewhere, in the distance, a dog barked.
    😁
    Loved this project! Thanks Marc!

    Thoroughly enjoyed this project with all the tips and advice. I have to agree with you near the end with your comment re other RUclips videos as I am not looking to always buy something that is the latest and greatest or trying to tell me that I am doing everything wrong or that someone spent hundreds of dollars on Temu etc.
    I want to watch people who build things that I am interested in or I think provide advice or do a comparison on things like Hardwax Oil etc. Keep up the good work and can't wait to watch the next project 😀

    I'm curious about your use of tung oil inside the cabinet. In the past, I had always been advised to stay away from oil finishes for the interior of a cabinet because of the chance of the contained oil turning a little rancid over a period of years, so I've always used shellac polish inside drawers/doors. Is that less of a problem than I thought?

    • @woodwhisperer
      @woodwhisperer  7 месяцев назад

      Yes and no. Drying oils won't really go rancid. That's something that happen to non-drying kitchen oils. Even though they won't go rancid per se, that doesn't mean you don't have to be concerned about odors. Any time you apply oil inside an enclosed area, you will want to let it air out for as long as possible so that the smell dissipates. And if the stuff being stored in there can take on scents, you'll want to be especially careful. In my case, the only things being stored in there are non-absorbant items that usually get washed right before they're used. It's all special occasion stuff for holidays and big dinners. But even then, I let the sideboard air out for a week or so before we started filling it with things. So back to your point, using shellac or some other quick-drying low odor finish is really never a bad idea on an enclosed space as it does help circumvent the stank issue.

    How often would those surfaces need to be waxed to keep the doors sliding smooth?

    • @woodwhisperer
      @woodwhisperer  7 месяцев назад

      I guess it depends on use. It’s been over a year in real time and they’re not even close to needing more wax.

  • @TaylerMade

    i see that bumbleshutes do not list ingredients in their data sheets (illegal in nz). so i find it hard to believe that it is solvent free. tung oil (is a blend of ingredients) is generally a solvent, polyurethane and oil. if a manufacturer won't tell you whats in it, should you use it?

    • @jasonsmall5602
      @jasonsmall5602 7 месяцев назад

      They are claiming everything is plant based, which rules out polyurethane. The MSDS only lists d-limonene (this is a solvent), which also rules out other chemicals which would be needed in the MSDS. Even (especially) water is a solvent.

    • @woodwhisperer
      @woodwhisperer  7 месяцев назад +1

      It's not solvent-free and they don't profess it to be. The solvent is D-Limonene and you can find that on the SDS. The purpose of the SDS is to list hazardous ingredients, not every single ingredient. The three ingredients are listed directly on the can: polymerized tung oil, d-limonene, and organic gum rosin. There are a lot of finish companies out there that you should be suspicious of for obfuscating their ingredients, but Bumblechutes isn't one of them.

  • @brianpearce1890
    @brianpearce1890 7 месяцев назад

    I’ve recently seen woodworkers in other forums refer to multiple coats of tung oil as if it’s gospel. I used one coat of bumblechutes s’tung cut with mineral spirits on some end tables and was happy with the visual results (appreciate the recommendation). Having watched a few of your videos and kind of understanding oil is not a film finish, I don’t understand the logic of multiple coats of an oil finish. Do you think these people are just talking about a different product, is this a myth, or is my understanding wrong? I guess I just need to get the Flexner book…

    • @woodwhisperer
      @woodwhisperer  7 месяцев назад +1

      Tung oil will build over time. It won't be like a polyurethane film or anything, but the oil does dry and harden and eventually you can end up with a real nice finish. A single coat just isn't going to tell you much. No doubt about it though, it would be a labor of love. Each coat needs adequate time to cure and because you can't really flood the surface, you only leave a small amount of finish behind with each coat. This is probably why you see people speaking with some degree of pride about the finish. Given the amount of work involved, your mileage may vary.

  • @jimweisgram9185
    @jimweisgram9185 7 месяцев назад

    Marc, did you apply more than one coat of the finish?

    • @jimweisgram9185
      @jimweisgram9185 7 месяцев назад

      Ah, I should have waited until the end of the video. One coat.

    • @woodwhisperer
      @woodwhisperer  7 месяцев назад

      More coats is recommended though. Oils don't really build up so they'll happily take as many coats as you're willing to apply.

    Very Nice! The variation on the Sam Maloof finish is totally appropriate. I think he used turpentine as the solvent. The draw fronts need a better selection of wood grain. Drawer 2 is good. Drawer 1, the upper, is not so good. Drawer 3 is terrible and #4 is worse.

    Great project as always.
    Selfishly have a question for you. I will be starting a small hanging whisky cabinet. Using porter cable dovetail jig (never used). I am worried about using this jig with the idea of putting in a back panel. Should I add the rebate prior to adding dovetails or cut in using a router after the assembly of the case?? I do not want to have an opening on the ends where the dovetail is. I hope that is clear. If you have e a project video I could check out, please point out
    Thank you so much
