In this part of the Sideboard series we'll focus on the Patinaed Copper and Live Edge Sliding Doors. The sliding doors will be constructed using a strip of patinaed copper and live edge walnut veneer. We'll cut our own veneer from thicker live edge slabs. The core of the door will consist of MDF with a walnut frame. The walnut frame allows me to run the veneer all the way to the edges for a continuous appearance. The copper strip is aged using a torch, resulting in some beautiful red, blue and orange hues that should continue to look great as the copper ages naturally.
The real magic of a good set of sliding doors comes from the construction of the rabbets and the groove in the case. The goal is to minimize friction. The final product has an incredible contrast between the patinaed copper and live edge walnut that really catches the eye.

That copper just complements the wood so well.
The best copper treatment I have seen is by Brian Benham. His uploads and colour finishes on copper is fantastic
Brian is a genius.
Holy crap.....those doors are NICE!
The whole thing is looking really nice.
I’m loving the copper inlay and I think it will only get better with age.Great tutorial too I like how you explained every detail down to a T.
I really like how the sideboard is coming together! I made a credenza/sideboard deal just recently and use the bottom of the sliding door (tongue) to offset the face of the door up from the bottom by an 1/8th, so the reveal from the top and bottom is both about an 1/8th. I personally like it a little more. I wish people could reply with pictures in RUclips. Also, I feel ya on putting your SawStop in bypass mode for the first time lol.
Really loving this series.
Those doors look amazing! That definitely gives me some ideas.
Your doors are outstanding. 👍👍 As they are awesome now, they will be unbelievable when the finish goes on. Happy New Year. I am wishing you and yours a great 2024.🙂🙂
Just like plywood, scoring the cut line on the thin copper panel would help with achieving a cleaner cut. I use a rotary cutter and a straight edge for scoring metal- hell on the blade- but I keep a dedicated blade for this purpose. Love this project!
This series is fantastic. I am really enjoying it. My friends at Krueger Industrial Smoothing could help you with that copper issue. Sure they botched the Statue of Liberty job but they’re really good.
Isn’t their slogan “We don’t care and it shows”?
Loving the doors, quick question on the bottom contact point, would it work if the tongue was the contact point rather than the front edge? I appreciate that you don’t want the whole thickness riding along but I picture an even reveal with the doors.
great work, i like that design
Rather that having the door float in the groove and ride on the front edge of the rabbet, would it work as well doing the opposite? Ride in the groove as the contact point (after adjusting measurements) and float the front edge of the rabbet?
The copper looks amazing. I wonder how the copper tarnishing will affect the look...
looks like I'll need to finally get a 12 in jointer to straighten out some copper 🤪🤪🤪
I was so nervous the first time I put my saw into bypass mode. All I could think about was the $100 cartridge if I screwed up.
Have any recommendations for glass doors in a similar configuration of top/bottom grooves?
I am wondering if there is a way to darken copper evenly? I may need it for a coffee table. 😊
If you want it darker, but not green then look into "liver of Sulphur" and run some tests.
For your "screwup", I'd probably glue in a 1/8th in strip of walnut or even maple and call it a feature.
I think a single door would work better since you will only be able to access one third of the cabinet at a time, but that's just my thinking.
Hey Brother. Just a heads up. Tin will also produce the rainbow effect with heat, as will stainless steel, regular black steel. Have fun with your future experimentation.😎
In another video, the maker used vinegar and ground rock salt to get blue stipling
You should make new doors, that gap is too much. Or put a top door stop that extends down to hide the whole rabbit. Or maybe a piece of copper bar as an accent filler piece across the top of the door.
😂 No thanks. The reality is, had I not mentioned the issue you never would have noticed. And consequently, no one will notice when it's in my home.
But we all know that it's there and it will be there forever haunting us forever, all 27K people who have viewed it so far, and countless more that will view it. @@woodwhisperer
Resaw 1/8 and drum sand to 3/16 doesn’t sound right (around 8:42 )
Thought it was my mrtric brain. Glad I was not the only one
@@jamesholden959Yeah, I heard that too and thought does Mark own a board stretcher. 😁👍🏻
I hear Blondi in the background 😂.
a super cheap way to kick-start the green patina effect is to use your own pee (urine, no joke) just pee in a jar and paint on with a disposable brush...
He could save even more effort and just lean the copper panels against the back of his workshop and let strangers pee on it while he is at home!
No
@@jeffreysmith5018ammonia will patina copper but it all comes down to how much of yourself you want to put into your work.
@@gizanked lol, that method would require far too much 😀
@@jeffreysmith5018and video that might get someone blocked🤣
First.
Congrats! You did it!
Dangit!
Beautiful as usual. Try salt and lemon juice to patina coper.
Great build. Love the uses of Copper. " This far along do you really think I'm going to make new ones?... Should I make new ones?" All due to one small error that no one would ever notice or care about. That's such a fine wood workers thought process. LOL The struggle is real.
Who’s bob? 😂 my daughter loves drawing on my dry erase board too.
He likes to make stuff.
Wait WHAT!? You resawed the boards into 1/8 sheets and drum sanded them to 3/16? I’m guessing those measurements are backwards or that’s a really spiffy drum sander you have there! Or is it 1/8 sanded down to 1/16? FYI: I rewound and listened at least 4 times, redid the fractions in my head, etc…🤔
Sorry, that was supposed to be 3/32"
@@woodwhisperer thank you so much. At least you know your viewers are paying attention!!😁
Hi Marc! Love the channel and just d/l my first guild project. I choose the plant stand and can hardly wait to try it. My question for you is what is the object in the throat of the Kapex at around 6:46 in the video? It appears to be some kind of a support matrix. Is it 3d printed possibly? Thanks!
Doors are looking great; I really like the copper between the live edges. The way you changed the copper’s colors was also great; love the colors the copper took on! I’m wondering if the copper would look better against a darker-colored wood? But, I realize the wood isn’t finished yet, and will probably be darker once that’s done.
I’m also wondering how likely it will be for the structure to sag over time, and if it’s enough of a concern to add additional legs in the middle?
Regardless, it’s really looking great and I’m looking forward to seeing it when it is finished!
I think an ammonia and salt treatment would be really cool on this with the walnut. It leaves a heavy texture blue/green oxidization.
Regards to Uncle Jason and the family
This has been one of the best series you have produced Marc. Loving every minute of it.
Thanks man.
Swesome, I love the copper embellishments.
I recently engaged my Sawstop brake due to carelessness. Aluminum miter with a bevel cut…. Oops $100 for the brake, and then extra for the blade. Still, I rather have the sawstop and my fingers. 😀
Be careful when torching on concrete, I've seen concrete explode when torched
Hey now, measure once, cut twice. ;-). Coming together nicely.
Where did you get those router inserts? My incra ones don’t have the vents
Did he say this is going to be easy? When has anything in this house been easy? Lol
HAPPY NEW YEAR, THANKS FOR THE VIDEO
Fantastic!
A hack like me would have added a 1/8” thick strap of aluminum to the back top and bottom as a skate rather than figure out all this rabbet business.
I kinda like the small shadow line on the top the doors due to the larger rabbit
