The audible alarm and big bright temperature display, are both good reasons to like a temperature controller on an expensive aquarium, BUT the thing I forgot to say clearly, is that it stops power to the heater once it reaches the set temperature. A faulty heater Can Not overheat and BOIL your prized fish.

The warm/cool version is also very useful for nano/pico tanks. I have a tiny reef tank with one of these - it’s hooked up to a tiny 7.5w always-on (no internal thermostat) heater, and a little desk fan. So the only equipment in the tank is the probe, the little heater, and the intake of my little HOB filter. Works like a charm, and without the extra bulk of a heater with a thermostat (even the smallest aquarium heaters are bulky in a 10 litre tank if they have an inbuilt thermostat). Fantastic investment.

      Hi Jeff,
it's really funny, because I was pretty oblivious to them. I have never seen one in a shop, so I had never thought about them, I just did the "normal" thing, and bought the most reliable brand of heater I could buy and hoped for the best, keeping a general eye on how my fish behaved to alert me when/if things go bad.
I love the audible warning alarm.
I love the controller doing all the on/off regulating.
I love that the controller kills the power supply once the tank is over the set temperature.

@@AussieAquatic I had very much the same viewpoint. I wasn't very happy with how imprecise the temperature control range was with even the better heaters but all seemed fine with my tank inhabitants. I started hearing heater failure nightmare stories from local aquarists and online. When I saw people using separate temperature controllers(which had much more sophisticated technology for maintaining temperature) I was thrilled with the idea, and wished that I had thought of using them earlier. All the benefits that you cited are spot on. The piece of mind I get from using them is priceless.

      @@jjxtwo1Agree wholeheartedly Jeff.
This is also a new tipping point, where product manufacturers are now Actively wanting to sell directly to customers online. That is a gamechanger.

@@AussieAquatic True, they are readily available now it seems. The prices and options are very good as well. Hopefully this will lead to more people using them and avoiding disasters. I always enjoy your videos! Good topics too.

@@jjxtwo1 thanks Jeff, I really appreciate your kind words. My views have dropped into a bit of a hole, but I'll tinker away at fixing that 😊

I have a Johnlen Micom External Display LED Heater in my 200-litre; apart from the two High/Low inbuilt temperature alarms it also turns off the heater if it's accidentally removed from the water to prevent thermal cracking. 👍
