Behind-the-Scenes Look at the Making of the Zathura Robot
FULL STORY here: bit.ly/ZathRobYT
Shane Mahan narrates this exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the making of the #Zathura Robot. Zathura marks the first time that Stan Winston Studios teamed up with director Jon Favreau, a huge fan of in-camera, old-style filmmaking techniques.
"Favreau came to us," recalled Shane Mahan, "and said: 'Look, I'm a fan of effects movies, but I don't like the way digital stuff looks. It always looks artificial to me, and it takes me out of the film, no matter how good it is. So I want to make this film as much in-camera and real as I can.' That was such a refreshing thing to hear."
Favreau would later return to Stan Winston Studio to bring another metallic character to life: IRON MAN.

No wonder it looked so real! Most of the robot was practical, only being enhanced by CGI for certain shots when it needs it. That is true Hollywood Special Effects!
I love how the robot kinda stumbles around as it's chasing! It really gives it a feeling of mass.
This robot terrified me as a kid.. that death stare is just too intense. I always wondered how they made it look so good in the movie, never knew it was a real model!
Me neither.
DUDE, I just saw today the film again after many years. Zathura terrorized me as a kiddo and still does xD
Same! I used to get pretty scared too.
Same too
For a 2005 film, this by far had a perfect blend of cgi and practical effects. Corridor crew seriously needs to react to this
Me too.
imo zathura is an underrated little gem of a movie.
This robot needs to be brought back. Either as a character or a background prop for a future Zathura film. To give homage to this memorable robot
Indeed.
I dont want a sequel or reboot anymore. Especially after watching a bunch of videos on how this movie was made with hardly any CGI. simply because it will be 99 percent modern crappy CGI nowadays if it were made again.
I absolutely loved this movie and on how it had an 80's movie feel to it even though it was released in 2005.
Not to mention the props and actual sets and models..
Me too.
One of my favorite robots, it was so traditional and classical yet terrifying at the same time!
This is my favorite robot in the whole universe
At first glance I thought it was all cg considering the time but only from the waist down was cg is amazing. The practical effects is astounding.
Man, those memories
My childhood movie right here!
Same.
I love this movie
So am I.
"And thats me running away"
Samy, the ending was one of my favorites too. I laugh every time I see it. -Maggie
I'm here because I had a nightmare about this robot a couple of days ago HAHAHHAHA
WOOOOOOOOOOW!! I AM REALLY AMAZED!
(Zathura was my favourite movie in my childhood)
Love this robot and love you for your work!
So am I.
Fantastic film. It’s very underrated and deserves much more credit.
looks like alot of fun
Blue screens r what make our imagination come from hard work!
These clips r unique!!😃
Wow that is amazing... If I was working there with you guys I'd never go home... ya'd have to kick me out! LOL!
Wow thanks for the heart!
The robot has always scared me as a kid whenever I watched This movie!
Beautiful.
one of my favourite SF movie !
the making of in the DVD is awesome ! :)
ROBOT MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONTH~!!!
~That's robot month.
love the robot
Alien 👾 life form must destroy.
Feakin awesome.
Now..
I want to see a Real WORKING Ed-209 PLZ.
I was not scared of the lizards but the robot gave me nightmares lol
this is awesome
The animation from the CG to the practical effects are all so phenomenal. The film itself was, I mean, alright. It wasn't bad. But this robot is what keeps me still thinking about it. The way it moves perfectly captures the terrifying weight of this several ton murder bot just crashing through the house.
Aaaw how I miss practicle effects 😭
So am I. Ever since, Star Wars sequel trilogy.
Awsome!!!!!!!!!
Jaja siempre tuve la curiosidad de saber como isieron este robot y las escenas XDDD
so it was a costume? but what is that little robot's for? or was it all CG? i can't figure it out, help 😂
There was a full-size costume and the little robot was used for closeup shots. Also, they've used CGI under the post-production. - Balázs
@@StanWinstonSchool ahh a combination of them all. thanks man 👍i was enlightened
Is there a reason why it wasn't all done digitally?
Morad Farhaoui I think it looks much more realistic with both practical and CGI effects
I can say that the robot chase scene in zathura looks incredibly realistic compared to today's heavy cgi reliant movies. Practical effect definitely really help achieve that realism in here.
Because they wanted it to actually look good.
Tbh, I always thought it was completely cgi, whilst there are some things that I thought was practical but was actually cgi, that’s when you know they did a fantastic job.
Filming behind in August 2004
This robot looks like the mark 1 in iron man 1
Stan Winston Studio made both of them. ;) - Balázs
the ending was hilarious lol
Yes, of course.
This robot gave me nightmares lol
Fun fun
cuanto queres por el robot de control?
احمرحكم
Lol
3:14
LOL was that an air horn at 00:48?
0:49 yes, that’s the air horn.
Whats the name of the robot
He doesn't have a name he is just called "The Robot"
frank oz voiced the robot
Yo si decia ese robot se veía supremamente realista en todos sus movimientos
Ahora todo tiene sentido 😅
Robot:Alien life form must destroy
Zorgons: Oh Hell nahhh!
They are using a iron puppet and less CGI that's how you make movie look real
2022 anyone 😁
I had a dream about this robot he tried to kill me 😭😭 but then we went to a gas station and robed it? I have a very wired brain 😑
This robot is not real from this movie, only in this movie
