Tuner, Overdrive, Distortion, Tap-Tempo Delay and Effects Loop, all in a solid, functional package that is small enough to fit in your guitar case and take anywhere to be used as a pedalboard alternative or even a one-stop solution when an amp is inconvenient or not needed. The onboard cab-sim does a convincing job of sounding like a great miked up amp (from clean to mean thanks to the onboard dirt) and the addition of a tuner means you probably won't need much else at all. However, if a phaser, chorus, or any other additions are needed you'll be pleased to know that an effects loop (post distortion, pre delay) are there as well. Cool as!
Today's tools:
Guitar: Fender 50th Anniversary Deluxe Stratocaster (stock).
Amp: Achillies Vibrolux Reverb replica (2 x C10Q Jensens)
Extra effects: N/A
Cables: Providence and Montreux
Power Supply: Voodoo Lab MONDO
Mic: Shure SM57 (amp) Samson Airline77 (me)
Camera: Canon 60D and Sony HDR CX190 (me), iPhone 6+ (pedal)
Soundcard: AVID Mbox Pro 3
Computer: Apple iMac 27" i7 3.4 GHz 16 GB RAM
Software: Pro Tools 12.4, Waves CLA Guitars (slight comp over input track), Waves L3-16 Limiter (to keep levels in check at output), Apple Final Cut Pro X (video editing and RUclips compression).
The only decent demo of this pedal on youtube...thanks for sharing. Bought this by accident and having difficulty getting a decent sound...this vid proves it is possible...
The tuner and effects loop are indeed a welcome addition. But unlike Fly Rig, it has no preamp section and no separate boost function. The cab sim would be a good idea if it had two different outputs that allowed you to send an uneffected signal to your own amp at the same time. I wish I could say it is better than Fly Rig, but it does not seem to be. It is just a different unit with its own pros and cons.
You can use either the distortion or overdrive as a boost to one another or you can add another mini boost pedal after the unit.
Thanks again Brett. Great review !
Impressive tone and overall value this fx strip unit that doesn't break the bank. Cool video! Thanks for this!
This is great pedal, with the fx loop even more wow!!. Thanks for the demo Brett. Cheers.
Thanks for your consistently great and informative videos!
You played Van Halen riffs from 1978 !!! Cool !!!
I've tried this one with the cab sim on through my amp and sounded even better than without it. Am I crazy? Maybe!
Nice demo and very interesting pedal for someone that wants simplicity in their floor effects. I demo'd one of the SansAmp pedals and it did not impress, at least for my type of setup, which is similar to yours, Strat and Deluxe Reverb, playing modern country and classic rock. The distortion and overdrive seems a bit more transparent, meaning that the eq doesn't change too much unless you use the extreme eq settings.
Simple, easy, and classic. Just how a multi-effect should be.
Killer demo !!!!
bien ce truc ! Très bonne démo !
Interesting. I go the tech 21 fly rig red edited. Love it. Wish they would of included a tuner and effects loop though.
Sounds great, What's not to like.
Ah read my mind very tech 21.....ish Burgs I think your in love with the 'Achilles ' clean sound very impressive, having fun?
seems like this is the best dist and od from valeton pedals, rad and analog-ish. too bad i can't find one in my country.
nice, good idea. maybe they could have integrated the tap tempo and delay switch together to make room for another effect like modulation. that would replace my whole pedal board.
I'll stick with my Tech 21 Fly Rig, but nice demo.
Corey Mineard me too,, but i think ima buy this for some purposes,,
I watched this, liked the video, liked the product, and went to buy Sonicake rockstage lol.
Unfortunately the Fly Rig doesn't have an OD. I bought a unit, but turned it back for that reason. But the pedal is perfect.
Wow, I thought that this would cost closer to 300$ or something along those lines, but it actually isn't that pricey at all. Seems like a great piece of gear for the price.
Nice Van Halen riffs!
Just ordered one of these. When using the cab sim going direct to PA, is there any way to set the output volume?
I hope you'll soon review the hi gain version of this strip
Hi Brett, based on sound alone (particularly the overdrive/distortion), which would you prefer, this Valeton Dapper or the Mooer Red Truck? (BTW...you sound great on either!) I have the Red Truck and am looking for a bit better sounding distortion. The red Truck's overdrive is acceptable. Thanks! (I am editing this post to add the Tech21 RK5 as a possibility. Which of these 3, if you could only have 1, would be your choice? Thanks again, Brett!)
A fly rig in the loop would be insane!
Hi, is the over like a tube screamer? do the switches put "pop"? ,,, I'm looking through the Valeton models, one that has a decent tube screamer but not something hi-gain,,,, this seems to be it but you can recommend another model there,,, it's to be carried in the bag of my guitar to jam and that,,,, Which is the best for you?
Can't afford anything else. This is perfect for gigs, rehearsals straight into front desk. No need for amps, stacks anymore cuz this sounds very decent. Fx loop cool to shape even more your tone.. could sell unnecessary pedals to compact your pedalboard and make it nice, tight and clean and this unit doesn't hurt the bank with great compact bargain...
an xlr out would make this the best thing going.
Would I need a buffer with this or is the output buffered??? thanks!
sir. in your opinion. which one is better sounding? this dapper or the darker one? cause im having second thoughts about which one to get. thank you so much.
I have both, and find the dark dapper is much more metal/heavy on the overdrive's..
Nice review Mr. Kingman. It's completly analog? By the way, I just bought Valeton Dapper Mini. Maybe you can make another review :D
Nice demo, thank you! Is this pedal made in the UK?
Dist piece sounds better than the FlyRig. That's the one piece I really dislike about my FlyRig. The Plexi just doesn't do it for me. Just can't seem to dial it in to something usable. I love the Blonde SansAmp section, though.
+Kenny Martin Yeah I definitely find the RK5 Fly Rig much more to my taste than the Plexi. That Plexi drive is very thin and grating to my ears.
What do you think is the best this valeton or a cuvave cube baby ?
I have a question, if i want to go direct to the mixer do I have to connect the output to a DI with an XLR balanced output?
Have you connected the additional pedal in the effects loop with common patch cables?
Weren't you going to do a demo of the FlyRig running directly into an amp?
HI! I have a question. Do you know what is the name of the distorion ??? I like the distortion sound, but , i want only the distortion pedal hahaha . Thanks in advance.
Totally evident the Valeton is most likely a self branded version of The Tech 21 stuff. Same manufacturer, different package. Look at the makeup. All from the same plant in Wuhan Corona China. Who cares. This thing sounds great! I have two of them. Just in case. U can't go wrong for straight forward Rock music.
Is there any chance you would do a review for the new '' Valeton Dapper Dark'' and maybe the ''Mooer Red Truck'' ?
The Red Truck demo is being made this week, with a bit of luck. The Dapper Dark is something I was unaware of. I'll check it out. Thanks.
This or the Mooer Red Truck sound/tone wise in quality?
So is it super quiet, or is it the guitar? You'd think od and dist and single coils would be a nightmare.
+Alan Angel The 50th Anniversary Strat featured Samarium Noiseless Cobalt pickups (SCN's) which is what you hear or don't hear (ha!!... sorry) here. :D Because most of my work is on stage, noiseless pickups like these or Kinmans are a must so I fit them more often than not to all of my guitars.
+Brett Kingman Impressive.
If only it had trails on the delay effect then this would be perfect.
My thing is I need that boost. I need to go from a nice distorted guitar up 15% for a solo and then back down again. Would the OD do that?
Mike Song yes it would.
hi guys i have a amt r2 i got it after watching brett kingmans demo. and now i want to get the dapper mini can i use it with my amt r2? pls help im new with analog pedals.
The thing im wondering is how many pedals can you put through the fx loop without it causing signal noise
Smokey Joe that's going to be more down to your power supply, and grounding if you mix digital and analogue pedals than this specifically.
this pedal good for direct to mixer?
If you doesn't using any dist or overdrive, are thoose still sound good? I mean Cab Sim only works with dist or if you bypass them all, it still using cab sim? Sorry for my bad english.
Cab sim always
on until you off the cab sim suis.
Valeton or sonicake?
Is it available in Australia Brett?
+TheYesdavo Not that I know of.
+TheYesdavo I got it straight from them... I couldn't wait for the store to bring it! It's still a new product and looks like it's gonna take some time to reach the shelves. The email they gave me is sales@valeton.net
any tips on how we could buy a lot of gear? =D
It would be cool if it had modulation instead of overdrive
it's completly analog?
In Canadian dollars ?
I just got this baby from Amazon. Is there a way to run the overdrive and distortion through front of amp and delay through the effects loop of an amp?
This is called the 4 cable method. Loads of videos on youtube show how to set this up.
can you share the link? i can't find it.
4-cable-method = cable1 (GTR to Dapper-Input), cable2 (Dapper FX-send to Amp-Input), cable3 (Amp FX-send to Dapper FX-return), cable4 (Dapper-output to Amp FX-return)
does valeton dapper have a looper function? what is this "fx loop"?
No, there is no looper function, an 'fx-loop' is something where you plug in additional pedals, like Brett does here with that little Chorus.
ok but where is the noise gate?
Is true bypass?
Can you stack 2 pedals in the loop?
You can stack all the pedals you want in the fx loop, but you can only play in mono (if you wonder about stereo pedals).
does th rk5 have a cab SIM built in?
it does, (only) with the SansAmp activated...
Why no chorus in that ;-;
Not sure I totally get the point of this... It just seems like a really limited multi effects pedal.
+Benn Down It's meant as a backup incase your main pedalboard/amp goes tits up during a gig or as a grab and go alternative if you don't want to lug your full kit around.
There's something to be said for simplicity and ease of use.
+Benn Down To me was an affordable solution for not carrying 4 or 5 pedals + power supplies + patch cables every night to my gig.... plus it sounds great. It's an analog core for your pedal-board... then you can go as you please trough the FX Loop.
Isn't it an alternative to carrying 3 pedals? I thought this one was completely analog?
здесь есть русских?
если есть скажите пожалуйста стоит ли брать такую штуку
для концерта или для репетиции с группой
ummmmmmm how about take of that fucking tuner off and make it a B O O S T .. you guys can have that idea for free... bet you's sell the shit out of these then
