Rick walked over to the front door and called Snickers, hoping his voice and sudden appearance might frighten the bears away. As soon as they heard his voice and saw him in the doorway, both bears dashed toward Rick in unison.
Even though he was experienced with grizzlies, Rick was terrified. He opened the front door and slammed it shut when the bears were within 5 feet of entering the house. The grizzlies paused and examined the doorway, possibly unsure of where Rick had disappeared.
On Rick’s property was a guest cabin, and his teenage daughter, whom we will call Jennifer, was inside. Her dog, Pippen, was cowering outside the door to the cabin, hoping to be let in before the grizzlies noticed him. Rick watched the grizzlies through windows and worked his way to an open one. He shouted to Jennifer to let Pippen into the cabin.
Jennifer opened the door while the bears were only 15 yards or so away. As soon as they saw the door open they dashed in unison toward her in the same manner they had pursued Rick. Jennifer slammed the door after letting Pippen inside, and the bears were only three feet from the door.
Now, Rick had made a decision previously that he was seriously regretting. He had several hunting rifles but had them stored in his father’s gun safe and out of reach of his children. Grandpa’s house was only a five-minute drive away but it might as well have been a million miles away. The only weapon he could find was a large kitchen knife, which granted him a modicum of confidence. Rick picked up the phone and dialed his father’s number hoping he would pick up quickly.
Rick’s father did pick up, and couldn’t believe the details he was listening to. I am sure he thought it may have been some kind of prank, but as soon as he was reassured it wasn’t, he grabbed his rifle and headed right over.
Now Rick’s father was a real bear hugger, if you will. He was probably the last person in town to want to hurt or kill a bear. As he drove over his mind raced with the dire straits his family was now facing.
As he waited he thought of Claudia Huber and Matthias Liniger. Only three years prior they had been besieged by a grizzly bear that chased them through their home and eventually attacked Claudia. The account of their details is on this channel and I have linked to it in the video article below for your review.
Rick watched the grizzlies tearing into the garbage bag just outside the door when he heard the horn of his father’s truck honking. For those of you impressed with the idea that loud noises could be used as a deterrent for bears, pay attention to the following events. He watched in dismay as the bears simply turned their heads and looked in Grandpa’s direction. They didn’t bolt as he had hoped and walked towards the honking truck.
Grandpa was still reluctant to kill the grizzlies. He poked his rifle from the window of his truck and fired a shot into the wood pile a few yards away from the bears. He hoped the loud noise would drive the bears off, but the grizzlies picked up their pace while they headed toward him.
Now knowing that these bears were not afraid of anything they should be, he drew down on the closest bear and fired. His bullet struck the bear in the chest and after only a few seconds, that bear died.
The second grizzly looked at Grandpa for a second, then glanced back at the dead grizzly. It laid down next to its partner and sniffed the dead bear between nervous mouthfuls of dandelions. After a minute or so, the uninjured bear slowly wandered off into the nearby forest.
Relief filled the family as they emerged from the house and the cabin. Grandpa didn’t want to shoot either of the grizzlies, let alone both of them, and expressed relief at the departure of the second bear.
After the departure of the officials, Rick departed for his father’s house, to retrieve his rifles. Within twenty minutes he had returned and began checking his firearms over to make sure they were operable and ready, just in case.
As he looked over his rifles, Rick’s children began screaming that the bear was back. He shuffled through the house and peered out of a window to locate the bear. He could see it only a few feet from the house so he packed his rifle out the front door.
As Rick rounded the corner, the grizzly turned and looked straight at him. It began to walk toward him with no hesitation and demonstrated an aggressive presence. This time Rick was not terrified. He was putting an end to this torment for once and for all. He aimed at the grizzly's chest and fired. The bear retreated a few yards, staggered a little then tipped over dead.

Ok, BUT there have been MANY bears shot many times that still attacked and killed the person who shot it, also due to the massive amounts of adrenalin released when certain animals are wounded, they can run faster than when not wounded! In those cases, even an umbrella MAY have served as a far better deterrent via the rapid opening and shutting of the umbrella.

I am saddened by the shrinking natural habitat for all creatures, especially large and predatory mammals who need space and ideally no people or as few as possible. I’m also very sympathetic toward mankind’s drive to explore, to enjoy natural environments, and the need to harvest the earth’s resources within reason.
Both animals and humans have a right to be here. People are tasked with the difficult decisions for finding the right balances which differ and change across places and times. It’s not a simple thing and we won’t always get it right. Some people are selfish or greedy, but there are many, many more people who love animals and want to do right by them.
I might’ve gotten a little carried away there, oh well!

I grew up in the bush in the 1950's, we always had a really big dog or two that would run off the bear coming for the garbage, yep we had our own little dump across the yard, I never did actually see the bear, and Dad never even tried to shoot it, Rover never got hurt and he would harass the bear every time it came near until it left, usually quite quickly, everyone had guns and big usually free range dogs, and in twenty one years, the only bear encounter I had was when I was out without the dog. The trick I think is having a dog that will respect the bears potential for damage, won't run to hide behind you and will lead or drive the bear away from you, my boys loved playing tag with bears, never got hurt, never hurt the bears but kept them really uncomfortable around our home, it also helped that the only interactions with people was being hunted, which kept them fairly respectful of humans. I absolutely don't understand the mindset of idiots that feed the bears and habituate them to not respect humans, it does the animal no favours and likely causes it to be euthanized for public safety.

No i doubt it. Bears you have to know will eat just about anything. A large part of their diet are things like berrys, bugs, roots. Of course they will go after a moose or any big animal as first choice.. Dogs are really too fast for bears to catch unless they can come right up on one.I seen bears and wolf packs tangle many times. The most funny thing I ever saw was a brown with a fresh moose kill. The Alaska "badass "as we call them (Wolverine-a 40 lb dog size critter) come running right up to it. The wolverine proceeded to run circles around this brown repeatedly taking bites out of its ass. Wolverines are too fast for the bear to get hold of. By like the 15th bite i think bear said to itself "The hell with it" He rips off a piece of the moose and runs off with it, leaving a large portion to the theif. I later saw it licking is ass.

I was picking tomatoes in my garden one day and sensed something behind me, I turned and had a coyote creeping up on me. I stood tall and raised my hands and yelled, then my dog started barking in the house and it ran off. The scary thing is they come in packs so I know there was at least 3 or 4 more in the vine maples behind me. Number one rule to avoid bears is you never, never leave garbage out, even for a minute. Most people here have garbage sheds with bungee cords all around them.

Meanwhile, in Ontario, shepherds with hundreds of sheep sleep in tents in Grizzly, wolf, coyote country, safely guarded by Livestock Guardian Dogs. I had not heard of them until I ran across a Great Pyrenees at a rescue in Dallas, TX. I have friends who use them for their goat herd protection. Most report no loss of livestock once they got the dogs. They're not like typical pets, the breed is more than 3,000 years old, and know how to keep flocks safe with the usual predators. These bears would probably have killed one because they clearly were habituated to human food and environments. Those bears generally get put down. The wild bears generally move off for an easier meal when confronted by the LGDs - some breeds are particularly "convincing" to bears. The shepherds have lost a a few dogs over the years to the bears, the dogs are extremely protective and rarely back down.Their ability to work together is legendary. their "dance" as they work together to frustrate a bear is fascinating. They're not popular as pets as they bark a lot, very loudly, and whenever they please. They shed like crazy. They are completely trainable, but still remain independent thinkers. I wouldn't trade mine for the world, they are loyal to a fault. Head on over to this website for great stories of living in bear country with "working dogs...." I grew up and live in Alaska. Well there are many things you do. First the way you build your house is very important. You have nail spike strips around it so if a bear steps on it , it runs away fast. Second you have iron bars across your windows and have a 2 door entry setup into the house. I found 1/4 sticks of dynamite useful to keep lying around.
The you always have a 12 gag shotgun loaded with rifled slugs having burning magnesium tips.lying around. i have several. one in house. One in the barn and one in the plane.
You never take a step out of your house during bear season without the shotgun. I've had to shoot 8 browns charging me over the years. Then we have 6 caucasian sheperds the world largest dog breed 200 lb. they will detect and go after any bear, wolf, other animals. They can't of course stop a bear but will delay it and alert you.
Those plus common sense works well..

Because these kinds of incidents are so extremely rare, that's why. And people are never prepared for something that almost certainly isn't going to happen.

Some flower fairy has been feeding them, that's why they came running when they saw people.

That is why i hate people who feed wild animals because they are sentencing the animals to a death sentence because sooner or later they will relate humans to food and it will only be a matter of time before they are killed. I am glad that the family survived.

These bears should have been autopsied, and the contents of their stomachs should’ve been examined. There is a good chance some kid went missing and ended up as bear food.

Rick is so very fortunate that his knee jerk reaction to having weapons near his children, almost cost everyone their lives! Instead of teaching responsible gun ownership to his family, as his father had apparently taught him, he chose to put their lives in jeopardy by not having weapons on the premises, where apex predators were all around!
Another unforced error was to assume anything about the exact behavior of a wild animal, like making noise will scare off a hungry bear. Rick should reevaluate his plans to keep his family safe and quickly!!
