  • Welcome back to Scary Bear Attacks. Today’s episode takes us to the sparsely populated, tiny town of Johnsons Crossing, The Yukon Territory, Canada. Dense stands of fir and spruce interrupt muskeg and tundra covered ground, as this area is a buffer zone as the land transitions into all tundra just north a ways. I guess I would call this area Taiga as the trees are smaller than in forests, but there are many of them. The Teslin river winds its way through the valley and delivers a seasonal supply of Chum Salmon to people and bears alike. Common animals here include woodland & barren ground caribou, moose, elk, mule deer and you might even see a musk ox or two if you hold your jaw just right. Squirrels, Marmots and lemmings are not a rare sight, and they are pursued by a gaggle of small predators like red, gray and arctic foxes, coyotes, lynx and several members of the weasel family. The large predators here include cougars, gray wolves, and all three species of bear; black, brown and polar bears. It is in this lively and wild environment that our episode takes place today.
On the morning of October 18th, 2014 Matthias Liniger and his wife, 42 year old Claudia Huber were enjoying time at their cabin just outside of Johnson Crossing. They were both transplants from Switzerland and had made the Yukon area their home about 8 years prior. The common saying that if you are a woman looking for a man in Alaska the odds are good, the only problem is the goods are odd, best describes the local folk here, but Matthias and Claudia found a way to fit right in. They were so entwined into the local social fabric that they both landed jobs with the Teslin Tlingit First Nations, a group of indigenous people with ancestry dating back thousands of years from this area. They also ran a business offering guided wilderness trips and accommodations to Europeans, primarily, and had developed a strong clientele from German speakers abroad. They called their guide service “The Breath of Wilderness”.
Matthias and Claudia wanted to stay in the Yukon for the rest of their lives. They had no children but were bonded to each other, as close to anyone. Their roots ran so deep in this country that they had both received permanent citizenship and officially became Canadian citizens together.
Claudia was the kind of woman who was undaunted by the rigorous demands of frontier life, and was known as a woman who could handle a chainsaw and then go home and dress up for a night on the town. Matthias described his wife as the most stunning woman you have ever seen. It was clearly a taiga love story that knew no limitations.
Claudia and the couples’ Alaskan Malamute named Kona were outside the cabin. Kona began barking at something in the trees nearby and Claudia heard something moving in the brush. Claudia looked over to see a 375 pound brown bear emerging from the treeline and crossing the lawn of the cabin. She immediately hustled herself and Kona inside to safety.
Whether it was curiosity or predatory behavior initially is hard to tell, but the undersized male immediately approached the front window of the cabin and placed his massive paws on the glass separating him and Claudia.
At this time of year, a healthy brown bear would be much larger than 375 pounds. In my mind, there is no doubt this bear had not dominated the salmon stream fishing spots and was in a bad way. It should have been at least 300 pounds heavier this time of year, and that is an aggravating circumstance to the following events.
Just as the bear set its massive paws on the front window, it leaned in a bit and the glass gave way with a thunderous shatter. The big bear tumbled inside and quickly scrambled back to its feet. It immediately began to run after Kona. Claudia and Matthias immediately fled outside, each, to a different one of the two cars parked out front. In the confusion, Kona fled to the nearby trees.
Claudia jumped into the couples’ SUV and watched as Matthias scrambled into their other car just a few yards away. They were so surprised by this home invasion that neither one of them managed to grab the keys to either vehicle. For the time being, they were safe inside of their vehicles, but the bear wasn’t finished yet.
As soon as the bear's eyes met Matthias’, it leapt onto the hood of the vehicle sheltering him. It slid off, so it jumped up on it again, denting and scratching the hood terribly. Matthias began using the only weapon he had, the horn of his car. He began honking and honking at the bear, trying to scare it away.
The noise of the car horn did frighten the bear off, but only a short distance. As soon as the bear was several yards from the vehicle Matthias was in, Claudia decided she could quickly run to her husband, and they would be together. She scrambled from the SUV and sprinted toward Matthias in the other car. The only problem with this idea, is that brown bears, especially desperate ones, are extremely quick.

If his wife had been trained with at least a 10mm semi automatic pistol she coulda put some shots on that bear, and if he was a good shooter he coulda added on to the shots she put on the bear and it woulda dropped that bear before he could do life threatening damage let alone his goofy ass shooting her himself smh

No, he doesn't. See, this right here is a demonstration of the harmful destruction female emotional logic has done to our whole culture. Look Lady, regardless of your feelings, all human beings are ultimately and absolutely responsible for the immediate results of their own physical actions. I want you to let that sink in. Don't just concentrate on what a huge jerk I am and react to my character on an emotional level. Think about the choices this couple made and the very dangerous environment those choices were made in. You can do this, just take a deep breath. Let it out. Now think of the end result of this couples decisions. What happened to them? They got attacked. Successfully. This is objectively true regardless of how you FEEL about it or my lovely personality. It is also objectively true that the entire episode would have been avoided if they had made better more realistic choices based on the negativity of their situation. Period. If I stick my fist in a f#@king beehive and get stung, how much sympathy will you have for me if I then tearfully turn to you and say " But I deserve to be happy!!!" 🤣😂🤣🤣 This is the point in a Chess game in which I arrogantly lean back in my chair and declare "checkmate". You just got intellectually spanked by a douchebag who is probably less educated than you are. Let that sink in. So now YOU , like the couple in question, have a hard choice to make... either start informing your girly ass compassion with a dose of logic or double down on your feelings. Have a super day 😉

@@stevenfunderburg1623you have a point about female logic taking an extreme in the emotional direction, but you are absolutely in the wrong to berate a woman for being a woman.
Male and female tendencies balance each other out in a proper exchange - men tend to be too harsh/heartless in their judgments, a voice of female compassion is a necessity for an even viewpoint, that is not to say that the male's natural ability for decisive action shouldn't trump that when needed.
Unfortunately the problem with your lovely personality is all too cliche' - you are likely taking out your past hurts or rejections on an overtly female presence, there's just no other way around it, women acting like women trigger you. Your insight is clouded by YOUR own lack of control in emotion.
Give a good thought to it or don't, but it must be awful lonely over there so some changes might be in order.

Have another planned route of escape in case of fires, and plenty of fire extinguishers if you have rebar on windows 2. have extra key in your car for the ignition if you don’t have buttons to unlock the door with the code, probably good idea to have SUV with code keypad, and keep car door locked… bc bears can get in car doors. 3. have your fire arm on your person. Perhaps have an extra firearm in your car. 4. have bear spray on your belt if you live in bear country, perhaps have bear spray in your car. Have bear spray by your door if you live in bear country. 5. Have appropriate Satellite phone for emergencies. 6. ELECTRIC SOLAR GENERATED FENCING. 7. Keep your dog under control, like in the electric fencing… do we know what happened to the dog in this situation? He more than likely was killed. So unless you have a couple of Caucasian Shepherd dogs, keep your dog inside the perimeter of your electric fence.

I went to Tennessee last summer with my husband and had no idea it was black bear country. I have to sleep alone, so I slept on the main floor, not too far from the front door, while he slept downstairs with our dog. It was shortly after that trip that I found your channel after a newfound obsession over bears, knowing I was safe once we got back home. We saw many bears during that week. We had to put our trash in a metal locked bin. We weren't allowed to eat outside or even keep used napkins in our cars. I feel so foolish looking back that I slept with my door wide open just feet away from the front door where a bear could easily break in. We cooked every night and ate on the deck. The cabin we stayed in was the most beautiful place ever and I guess I was naive. I've watched all of your videos since then, but this one really struck a chord with me. One of the consequences of adrenaline dump in an emergency is that some fine motor coordination is lost due to blood diversion from extremities, a flight or fight biological response, so his hands may have been shaking. Resting the rifle on a solid object, like a car hood, might have helped. Whether bear spray would have helped at that point is a gamble. It certainly would have affected Claudia as well as the bear. Maybe that would be worth a try though, as long as he brought the rifle as well. A safe room that was bear proof might have helped. This tragedy shows the importance of drills for emergencies, and pre planning for possible contingencies. In panic, it's difficult to think of every variable and mistakes will happen.

Bear spray might not have worked once the attack occurred because the bear would fight for his prey. The distance between the bear and the husband was most likely because hubby knew he could not out run the bear if it charged him. The bullet ricocheting off the branch that ultimately led to wife's death tells me it was her time to cross over.

It did fail, didn't it? A lot of stuff failed in the sort of predicament that you would think a person living in the actual habitat of dangerous predators would have had to have prepared for at military levels. That's the sort of thing which tends to diminish panic. Your know? When you openly accept that your decision to be in the place you are means you are at all times in active danger and you are constantly expecting trouble because of that very reason? Guess Swiss guy wasn't as prepared or qualified to be there as he presumed he was.

@@stevenfunderburg1623 Steven, you have it exactly, I think. Swiss Guy wasn’t prepared for’combat’, either physically or mentally, with the apex predator in his area. I live in NW Montana’s Mission Mountains. Wildlife have made two movement corridors near me. Yesterday,a momma grizzly and her two cubs (about 1 year old) passed East to West about 1300 hrs, toward the Clark Fork River drainage. They were about 150 yards from our little compound. Grizzlies will be in the area through June. The black bears move around late at night and they will be here all year long. My point is, my adult daughter and I are very aware of out situation and we keep suitable firearms close by at home and in hand when afield. It’s a condition of life here. I’m glad to see your post, Steven, from a man who sees life as it is. Stay well and carry on!

Although the husband "Did Not" intend to "Shoot" at his wife, I think he "Saved" his wife from a "Tremendous Amount" of pain. Being "Eatened and Devoured" by the bear, the wife would have had an "Unspeakable, Torturous" death! Unknowingly, he "Spared" his wife from an "Excruciating, Painful" death, being "Eaten Alive!" In my opinion.

I've actually heard of a brown bear living to 50 years old in captivity but a brown bear living to 38 years old in the wild is truly astonishing. Maybe elderly bears become a lot like elderly lions, tigers and leopards. When they become too old and infirm to hunt natural prey and can no longer compete against the younger individuals they start to hunt people for their protein needs. Most big cats who hunt people in the wild are usually the elderly or the crippled. Even younger big cats will hunt people if they are crippled or if they were taught to hunt people by their mothers.

Self defense instructors say to carry your handgun at all times, you never know when you will need it. They are thinking about a more urban/suburban environment, but it really applies just as much to a wilderness scenario. Bear spray might be better in the wilderness. I have to carry my keys on me at all times because I have an alarm on cellphone that goes off when they are separated to prevent it from getting stolen/lost/forgotten. It also prevents me locking myself out of the house.

I live in Grizzly country in NE Washington. It’s always in the back of your mind. And finding Griz tracks close to your wall tent after eating pancakes and maple syrup while hunting? Breakfast don’t taste great the next morning! Stay safe out there people. Buy a gun. Practice with it. Buy bear spray. Practice with it. Keep your head on a swivel.

Our agony, pain, or the little grandiose "if that were me" stories we play in our heads don't change that. I truly feel for this man. I know the nightmare he lives through because I have been through something similar. 3 years ago and unfortunately time hasn't made much easier. Just aloneness. Run in front a bear is the worst thing you can do. I don’t thing bear spray would have worked. The bear was in predatory mode. The spray may have worked on Bear before he broke into the house. But this bear made up his mind so bear spray would have norked

Yes, this story really was a heartbreaker. This couple did everything right as far as bear-proofing their house & did nothing to attract this bear. They were at their own home, minding their own business. So sad. This bear was obviously desperate & had just learned humans were a new unexploited resource due to his age & inability to compete w/younger, stronger bears...so I'm not so sure if bear spray would've been a permanent deterrent. It might have stopped the bear in its tracks for maybe up to five minutes(?), but I think the bear would've definitely re-engaged in his efforts to find some food after shaking off the worst of the bear spray. This incident is just sad & frustrating because the husband did the right thing. What are the odds of a bullet ricocheting off a tree branch & striking his wife in a fatal manner? The odds weren't w/this couple that day, for sure.
