On the morning of October 12th, 2009, 83-year-old Orval Sanders was up bear hunting with three of his friends. Orval stood at six feet tall and was husky, healthy, and strong for his age. He had been hunting black bears since he was 12 years old and the rigorous activity helped him stay fit physically and mentally.
Orval and his friends would utilize hounds to pursue black bears and the pursuit would end in the bear escaping, or climbing into a tree to avoid the baying hounds. Most hunts would consist of the hounds pursuing the bear for two or three hours and Orval enjoyed hearing them bay as they trailed the scent of the bears.
The hunters didn’t always kill a bear when they treed one. Only after examining the bear did the hunters decide if they wanted the meat and pelt did they kill one. They never killed a bear and left it though, as they were ethical hunters and demonstrated appreciation and respect for their hunting traditions. Along with Orval were his long-time friends, Charlie Brown and Ron Boyd. His friends would come in very important in today’s episode.
The bear hunters had turned the hounds out on a scent trail earlier in the morning and had listened as the hounds bayed as they pursued the bear for almost an hour. Once the bear climbs a tree the hounds baying turns into howling, and that is the signal for the men to pull their hounds off the trail. At that point, they will either let the bear go or they will shoot it and claim its carcass and place their tag on it.
As the hunters made their way toward the bear they carried hunting rifles and no source indicated they had brought bear spray along with them. Once they arrived where the hounds were, they were surprised to see three black bears in the same tree. They examined the bears to see if they wanted to shoot any of them.
This season the hounds had treed 18 bears and these three brought the total to 21. All prior bears treed had been passed on by the hunters. They were either too small or had an uninteresting color pattern, but one of the bears treed today was a little different. It was a big bear and brown, which is known as a cinnamon bear. One of the hunters decided he would take it. He raised his rifle and shot the bear while it was poised in the tree limbs.
Now Orval knew better than to stand too close to a treed bear. At this point, they have been pursued over miles of rough terrain. They were likely exhausted and in a bad mood due to being chased by the hounds. As Orval stood about 50 feet from the tree, his friend fired his rifle and shot the bear in the chest.
The impact of the bullet knocked the bear off balance and it tumbled to the ground. Half expecting the bear to be dead, Orval was surprised to see it spring back to its feet as soon as it hit the ground. It stood up, looked straight at Orval, and immediately dashed toward him. As it approached him it stood on its hind legs, popping its jaws as its paws reached toward the man. Seeing the bear closing in on Orval, Boyd fired and hit the bear two times but the wounded bear continued to focus on his hunting partner.
Orval didn’t have time to react to the angry bear and held his rifle between them as a sort of shield. The bear bit down on Orval’s rifle and right through his hand holding it. It shook its head and clamped its jaws onto his left arm.
As the massive angry black bear tore gashes into Orval’s forearm he jammed his thumb into its ear and twisted. He was hoping to irritate the bear into releasing his forearm from its jaws but was tossed around as the bear tried to tear his arm off. That’s when Charlie joined the fight by putting the boot to the bear. He kicked the bear several times and successfully distracted the bear from killing Orval, but now it focused its anger on him.
Before Charlie could escape, the bear bit onto his leg and began pulling him toward its mouth with its paws. Orval didn’t want to shoot Charlie so he threw his rifle at him instead. Given he was now being tossed around by the bear, Charlie missed the catch and dropped the rifle nearby. He bent over and picked it up, while being shaken back and forth, to try to defend himself. The man turned the rifle toward the bear and fired, striking the bear in the neck. With four bullet holes punched in its vitals, the bear slowly lost energy and died.
With the bear no longer a threat, the hunters turned to examining Orval's injuries. His left forearm was a bloody mess. As the men tied a handkerchief around it they could see Orval’s wrist bones, now barren of skin. Blood poured out of Orval’s wrist due to arteries being severed.

Not a fan of hunting with hounds, as it seems to stress out a lot of bears for no reason. Two things I don't understand here, is why the old guy did not have enough time to get even one shot off before being attacked, and why did the dogs not immediately attack the bear when it fell from the tree?

Bear hunters might get too comfortable with the dogs keeping that bear in the tree. It could drop out and be heading your way in a second. If your near the base of that tree it could be almost instantly.

I agree but keep this in mind. My father-in-law was out hunting with his hound who treated a bear. This is Oregon and it’s just blackbear here so this wasn’t a big grizzly. The weapon that my father-in-law used was a 44 mag specifically a Blackhawk Ruger. He positioned himself to get a clear shot at the bear and fired. The bear came down through the limbs of the fur tree and hit the ground at which point my father-in-law shot him again. To his surprise, the bear swung around and bit the end of his gun which he fired one more time. The bare backed up, shook his head and took off running. Three hits from a 44 mag two add extremely close range and that they got away. He tried to track it and had no success. He was fond of telling the story. There were no witnesses, but he was a straight up Oregonian
My point is a side arm is certainly helpful but may not be a cure all .

He's lucky he didn't go into shock and cardiac arrest. Definitely a tough old guy. I lost about 4.5 liters of blood during back surgery in 2015, went into shock and cardiac arrest. They did CPR and shocked me with those defibrillator paddles and here I still am 😂. I guess it wasn't my time to go and I'm stubborn too. I'm not quite 5 ft on my best day so I'm sure I have less total blood than a good sized man.
I'm not sure I like the idea of dogs harassing bears, dogs seem to be involved in many bear attacks so as it is.
I guess I just think it's cruel to harass bears especially if you're not even sure you're going to take the shot.
If I was a bear I wouldn't like to be harassed just minding my business, doing bear things.
Good story though, I'm glad they were ok and he lived to do what he enjoyed for another few years anyhow. We all should be so lucky and blessed. 😊

There’s nothing easy about hunting bears with hounds. Those dogs are expensive to buy and they need constant veterinary care, training, and time invested into them if they ever have a chance of treeing a bear. That takes a lot of money and hard earned experience. It is certainly not unfair to the bears in any sense. It does not apply any more stress to a bear than any interaction with any animal would. Bears are wild animals who are professionally hungry. They aren’t lolling around eating honey like Poo. Houndsmen usually have a chance to examine the animal and be selective. Many say they will only shoot a big boar or a certain color phase and may go years without shooting one. Most houndsmen hunt for their love of their hounds and provide a needed check on bear populations. It is easy to forget that humans are a part of nature whether they are following a pack of Plotts or sitting at a keyboard in a Seattle coffee shop. Wildlife populations need to be controlled or they get out of hand. And when that happens Mother Nature deals out death in far worse ways than a bear hunter. It’s far more humane to hunt bears than not.

GIven that a bear's sense of smell is strong i think yeah they should've had bear spray on them. Orville was caught lacking. Man must've just froze and didn't think about shooting probadly thought "oh **** im dead". Using hounds to hunt bears i think could be useful but also dangerous for the dog unless the dogs are well experienced but you can't predict how a wild animal will act. I respect Orville getting out there hunting in his 80's damn. i'm in my early 20's and it's got me motivated to get out and move. I think there's few of that class of men now. I still think that other hunters will have learned from the experienced much older hunters and carry on that lifestyle.
