Welcome back to Scary Bear Attacks! Today’s episode takes us to a rather surprising place to be talking about a brown bear attack. Off the coast of Vancouver Island near an aptly named place called Cape Caution. This part of the coast is a low-elevation plain packed with Coastal Western Hemlock trees growing up to two hundred feet tall. The trees may be tall but the bushes beneath the trees don’t shy away in presenting their beauty. Bushes like Indian Plum, American Holly, and Scotch Broom present their glory in season. The flowers of this area surpass the bushes with their dazzling display. Multicolored arrays of Chocolate Lilies, Tiger Lillies, and King Gentian radiate their colors while they sway in gentle sea breezes. The beauty of this area belies the danger presented by animals who are not swayed by the scenery and can interrupt its peace inexorably.
Along the shoreline Bull Kelp wash up on shore. The scent of ocean fish emanates from the kelp as it does so, permeating the surrounding area and tricking the sensitive noses of young brown bears into investigating. More mature bears know better than to find food where the fish are difficult to get, but younger bears trying to figure out this survival of the fittest thing still check it out, just in case.
On the afternoon of Monday, July 17th, 2017, 57-year-old Randal Warnock was piloting his fishing boat for his relay route back to Bella Coola. He had left his home of Port Hardy early in the morning and launched from Cortes Island around noon.
Warnock was the captain of the Nimpkish, a ferry that ran between Bella Coola and Bella Bella. By 6 PM, he had piloted his 40-foot fishing boat for the past six hours when the water began to churn with the arrival of rough seas.
Knowing that his fishing boat was not fit for these conditions, Warnock piloted his boat into Millbrook Cove dropped his 14-foot aluminum skiff, and motored toward Brown Island just offshore. He planned to spend some time doing his favorite activity, beach combing. He knew the time away from the helm while taking a brief walk would rejuvenate him and jumped ashore while the waves crashed over the rocks.
As he walked Warnock snapped photos of interesting things for his Instagram account and investigated curious objects he found along the shore, as the wind buffeted him and the bushes around him. Walking, he noticed a bunch of eagles perched in a tree, and the rare sight fascinated him briefly.
After about 15 minutes of beach combing Warnock came upon a Scotchman’s bumper and picked it to add it to his collection of interesting items. As he walked he studied the bumper when he heard a large twig snap behind him. As he turned his head his vision was filled with a furious brown bear closing in on him from only ten feet away.
In his split-second analysis, Warnock could see it was a juvenile bear, taller and bigger than a normal-sized black bear but still potentially dangerous. He knew better than to run and thought this was how his life would end. In what Warnock estimates to be a little over one second the bear closed in on him while he stood frozen in place by fear. The bear approached him so fast that he didn’t have time to be scared.
The bear ran up to Warnock and bit onto his left knee initially. It shook its head violently but only managed to rip his jeans to shreds and rip a few gashes in his flesh. It was trying to knock him down but Warnock fought losing his balance as the bear tossed him about.
Seeing the man refusing to fall, the bear bit into his right knee. This time the bear's teeth punctured deeply into his flesh tearing as it shook its head. Now invigorated by feeling the man’s flesh between its jaws, the bear tossed its head even more violently.
Pain shot through his leg as the bear's teeth tore through Warnock's knee tissues. Around that time, he remembered that he had brought along a knife. He reached around to his back pocket and pulled it out but the bear's attack caused the knife to fall from his hands.
He thought to himself that he had to bluff the bear. He had to show that he wasn’t a target. Over an attack that lasted around one minute, Warnock fought the pain of his injuries and successfully maintained his balance as the bear refused to relent.
Now disarmed of his only meager weapon, Warnock had a thought flood his mind. Fight back! Fight back! He looked down at the bear and could see the bear's head lined up perfectly for a punch. Warnock decked the brown bear as hard as he could, straight in the nose, and got ready to throw another one.

Hell no. It's sort of terrifying for ppl who live on Vancouver Island. They already have wolves, black bears and Mt lions. Now brown bears too ? 😳 a Mama brown bear and Cubs were recently filmed on Vancouver Island.

Warnock was lucky in that the bear was not fixated on him as prey . In addition , the tenacity of not giving up is what saved his life. Obviously Warnock must be a married man and knows how to handle himself in an argument.

Warnok struck the bear in its Achilles heel (the nose) and it seems the pain caused the bear to retreat. Well done Addicus, this was indeed a scary bear attack!

Really in my mind only two possibilities. One the bear did find something on the beach and was protecting it, or two this young bear found himself on a island without much to eat. "whats this think ill give this sea creature a try". " Nope, not worth the trouble" 😂

Randal unknowingly took a page out of Gene Moe's survival strategy. With brown bears it's said that you shouldn't fight back but in this instance fighting back was the best course of action.

It was the punch directly into the snout.
That was the stun return action that halted the bear from attacking further.
If he had holstered a tomahawk, and used the square hammer end to the snout, (since it was a juvenile bear) the bear would have ran, instead of staying vigorously in display of dismay and complaint.
Had he had a tomahawk, and the bear was an adult, he would be required to use the edged hammer end to end the attack (battle to kill, or be killed).

Warnock appears to be a 'mans man' and a very handsome one at that!😂He also has an intelligent look about him (and a nice sweater)😂....I always wonder how many of those attacked bring God to mind to ask for His help, and, or, 'see' snapshots of events, times in their lives, pass by them in rapid succession, as they imagine this is their last moment here on earth. As this happened to me one time while sailing in Maine during a squall, which I much later found out was intentionally planned.😎 So, yeah people, altogether, life on earth is a scarey place to live...and God warns us about this fact!😉❤

This was a curious confrontation but not as curious as one i read on a Russian blog today. Guy said back in about 1987 they had two soldiers checking a line that went through a wooded area. They were unarmed using a bucket with some tools and with thier lunch. They decided to stop and eat at a clearing under a small rather thin pine about 6 meters high. They even took a nap for a few minutes when suddenly surprised by a Brown Bear. One of them went up the tree while the other followed and realized it wasn't large enough to support them both. In a panic he decided to play dead and dumped the bucket with the tools and what remained of lunch (chicken and tomatoes) . He put the metal bucket over his head and laid on the ground. The bear ate the chicken. Then he proceeded to investigate the nice smelling bucket. He scratched , bites at it. Then circled around the man trying to figure out what this is. Finally he stood on his back paws and gave a roar trying to get a reaction. He finally stolled off back in the woods 😂😂😂 Bears like people sometimes have different personalities and who knows like in this story what they will do!!

This is the second the time a wild animal pursuing a man backs off after objects get thrown. This can be long time species learning of rifle caused death, earlier arrows - in any case that mysterious death from a distance, that for example keeps wolfs so affraid of men.

Scary Bear Attacks is what got me through the pandemic. So much time at home and not much business to tend to. I think I've seen well over 50 episodes. What stands out in my mind is how quietly these big creatures sneak up on you. It's always a twig that signals a warning. But by that time it is too late to grab the bear spray out of your backpack. Or too late to grab the rifle you leaned on a tree while taking a break. Or you have your trusty gun in hand and it jams. I mean, give me a break! They stalk their prey and eat them before they're dead. And our gov't not only wants to protect these apex predators, they want to relocate them into states that don't want them and let them run free to roam into neighborhoods and school districts. Unbelievable.

I agree that there's too many bears now in the Greater Yellowstone area. They need a hazing program or limited hunting season because bears have been protected for decades now and are losing their fear of humans. It's unfortunate that this fear needs to be reinforced, but it does for their safety and ours.
Bears and humans stay safe when they retain their natural fear of humans.
