@@Fishaholic I am sorry again sir, both sides look alike, should I let the potato with the side i think it's the right one for 1 week and if I don't see roots, should I turn on the other side? Or it will grow from both sides anyway.
Use a broader cup and go with your gut feeling. Potato will only grow leaves from the right end. Even if you have it upside down and use a broader cup then it will grow roots and leaves from bottom. Hope it helps
Thank you so much for this video...I put one in my HOB and almost immediately started rotting. Gonna try putting it into a cup so it can grow roots first.
Ypu are crazyman, in a good way crazy, I love the idea. Not sure about sveet potato, but ordinary potato will grow from even small piece like 1/4 or less. We used to cut planting potatos in half when we had too few to plant whole plot. That would make it more compact to begin with.
Cheers mate, I added the plant for filtration only and removed it from the tank when the potato started to rot. Unfortunately no delicious potatoes for me. Appreciate your comment and enjoy your weekend
Hey fishaholic you have a brilliant channel , we really love your channel name :D We never thought that it its possible to grow sweet potato in aquarium :)) We will support your channel and press red button we hope that this will be start of our new friendship :))
Hi Erika, the pointed end in water will give you good results. Roots will grow from all part of potato submerged in water and exposed part will produce leaves.
Hi mate, yes you can trim the roots, I did it quite a few times. Sweet potato will rot eventually but the vines will grow roots and turn into small individual plants.
@@Fishaholic Sorry there is not much in my comment, you really did not leave much else to say lol. You covered everything from why you were using sweet potato through to how to do it so well there was really nothing else to say other than, great video :) You have a nice clear and concise presentation style, which makes it easy to follow along and understand why you are doing what you are doing.
I am doing well too mate. Just busy with family and work so couldn't spend much time making youtube videos and visit subscribed channels. Thank you for asking too and have a nice week.
Sweet Potato will eventually rot but it take few months. But by then it would have grown heaps of stems and you can immersed the vines and they will develop into heaps of separate plants. Give it a go, success rate is very good. I did try with potato but it started to rot even before rooting. You might have to cut top piece of potato and immersed that in water.
Not too sure mate as I have had a filter in the tank too. Considering the amount of roots and leaves the plant had. I would say quite a bit for the growth of plant.
Hey mate, light through the window should be enough as I grew mine near window too and then moved it to the tank. Even the tank had light for aquarium not for the sweet potato. It is a very low maintenance plant.
Thanks for an excellent video. I tried the sweet potato but I found the roots quite invasive and it created a real mess so eventually I had to get rid of it. I found beetroots much better and less invasive so far.
@@Fishaholic I have beetroots & pothos in my tank. The reason I decided to try beetroot is beetroots are rich in nitric oxide and to produce nitric oxide they need nitrates so I presume they will take up nitrates from the water. Its been about 2 weeks since I put the beetroots and so far the roots seem ok and new leaves every few days. 👍
@@Fishaholic Initially I had the same problem with pothos. Either they would die out or the goldfish ate up the roots & killed them so I got a rectangle planter box and fitted an input pipe pumped by an ordinary internal powerhead filter pump from the aquarium and an output pipe going back to the tank and placed it on top of the aquarium. I filled it with baked clay media and planted the pothos in that. It therefore acts as an additional overhead sump filter to break down ammonia & nitrites as well as the plants to remove ammonia & nitrates from the water. The pothos has been growing this way for about 7 months now with no issues.
Hi Raj, Leaves will sprout soon, they might take bit longer. Depends mostly on the sweet potato. Roots will spread out if there is too much disturbance in the area near roots. I tied the long roots to a suction cup against the glass to keep them in one spot. Try not to disturb the plant so roots can grow downwards.
Hey, how do you prepare the sweet potatoes you grow? Because don't they have pesticides on them? Is it fine to just put the potato into the aquarium? Sorry for the many questions, but i read that washing them decreases their lifespan.
I washed sweet potato before placing half of it in water to remove any dirt, mine was alive for a few months before the potato itself started to rot. I will suggest washing it to keep your fish safe.
How often would you change the potato - because will the water rot it? Is it best just to keep the roots in the water? Thank you for your time... Edit ... ooooops, looks like someone else has asked this...Have noted your reply...
Good to hear mate, you will like the results once sweet potato has roots, stems and leaves. It will absorb most of the nitrates and you won't have to do too much water changes.

The pointed end of the sweet potato should face down in the water. Appreciate your comment mate

This might be a dumb question, but does it matter what end you put in the water?
Hi Erika, the pointed end in water will give you good results. Roots will grow from all part of potato submerged in water and exposed part will produce leaves.
Can you trim the roots? and what if the vines are all grown out and the sweet potato begins to rot. What do you do with the vines?

I want tp try as well but I heard that the roots, leaves and stems are poisonous to fish😢 Is that true? Do your fish nip on them?
I have had no issue at all as the roots always grew underwater. If you are too concerned, then try to keep leaves off the water

The pointier end should go in the water. You should be able to find some with roots emerging which will make it easier for you.
