  • Our 4th Gateway restoration!
Join me as I repaint, reassemble (the case) and repair the power rocker switch on this lovely 1999 tower case.
Did I pick a good color?
What do you think we should put back inside if the Slot A motherboard continues to refuse to boot?

I have 2 of those boards both work..they can be picky about how cards, memory get installed..if the board is off you have to unplugg it, then add ram and or cards or the board will not post

Having a working retro computer beats not having one: I think a Duron in a Socket A motherboard is an acceptable compromise to getting this Gateway working. You can always hold onto the old parts in case you get the right opportunity to revisit them in the future.

Solid opinion, sir! Yeah, I WANT the Slot A to work, but willpower alone isn't going to cut it.

Check the capacitors near the CPU slot on the dead Jabil Kadoka board. Might be an easy fix.

That mobo is probably shorting the CPU slot or it's fried, try any AMD Athlon compatible Slot 1 motherboards (Or the PSU only likes Intel)

There aren't any other Slot A motherboards to be had. Not really.

Hi Mike, what a shame I couldn't drop by and lend you one of my K7 and motherboard so you could test your parts.
A Duron is.not a bad choice it was pretty fast compared to Celerons and PIII and not that far back to Athlons.

    Use the 750 Duron

Definitely go for the duron you will have a way easier time and itd still technically be as you said a select 750 but also the case looks beautiful i also think the power switch repair was very smart i had a old compaq deskpro that had the buttons on the side to take the top off and it had broken clips so the cover wouldnt lock in place i literally molded replacement pieces out of stick epoxy then attached it with some plastic jb weld lol took me likd a whole 2 days for 2 little clips

@@UncleMikeRetro to sort of cover up the fact you used a toothpick, paint the replacement portion gray to match the gray plastic color! Still a simple solution!
